We’ve all been to a million rallies with equally as many raffles offeringthe opportunity to win a motorcycle. You religiously fill out forms, do-nate money and provide your personal information in hopes of takinghome a shiny, brand new ride. Ever wonder if anyone really wins? I’mhere to tell you they do. Meet Dionne Williams-Mural, proud winnerof the 2009 Crossbones Harley from Mile High Harley Davidson.

Mile High Harley Davidson has been proud supporter of the MuscularDystrophy Association for years. Each year they provide a Harley to beraffled for the cause. For every entry, $1 is donated to MDA and at theend of the year one lucky winner is selected.

The 2010 winner couldn’t possibly be more deserving. With Dionneand her husband Mike both being school teachers, who as all teachersare, are grossly underpaid for the incredible work they do, the odds ofever being able to purchase a $20,000 Harley were slim. Dionne faith-fully entered the raffle at every opportunity simply to contribute toMDA. Little did she know the payoff would be amazing.

So put your wonders to rest, people really do win. Go ahead, fill out theforms, donate to the good causes and keep your fingers crossed!

ello my Quick Throttle family and friends! I’d like tointroduce myself as your new Editor for the RockyMountain edition of this fabulous magazine. My

name is Deb Mountain (yes, Mountain is my real name) andmany of you may recognize me from my previous employ-ment in the motorcycle community. I reside in the Denverarea and consider the Rocky Mountains to be some of thebest riding around.

I have been riding for the last 11 years and couldn’t possiblylove anything more. I ride a 2000, 883 Sportster XLC—myfirst and only bike to date. Although I have dreams of a big-ger, better, more cushy ride (can you say, rubber mount?), I’vebeen across the country more than once on my “little” bikeand have met some of the greatest folks on the planet. I’veput more than 60,000 miles on the tach and have enjoyedevery minute of it.

I’m extremely excited by the opportunity to help grow themagazine and more importantly by the opportunity to helpsupport and inform the amazing community of motorcycleenthusiasts that is so prevalent in this region. I am lookingforward to expanding the amount of local coverage signifi-cantly, so if you have advertising needs, events you’d like toshare, or simply have ideas for articles you’d like to see, feelfree to contact me directly.

As the Rocky Mountain riding season gets into full swing(wait, with the weather we’ve been having, did it ever reallystop?), I look forward to some great riding, attending the nu-merous events throughout the region and getting to know youall.

Keep the shiny side up and a smile on your face!

When do I ride my Custom Harley-FXR with the factory-boredtwin cam engine? Only on days that end in ‘Y’ and any otherchance I can get. I call my bike Scarlett Dancer and she’s 1560cc’s of raw power. In case you have any doubt - I am in love withriding and all things motorcycle.

My favorite ride is when I head out of town for a long road trip.It mostly does not matter where I’m headed – just getting out andriding for 100’s of miles in a day – day after day – just living forthe ride alone. That’s the best!

Currently, I belong to two women’s riding clubs: the Motor Maidsand the Women In The Wind Club. I have been the InternationalMaintenance Office for the WITW club for the past 11½ years.Maintenance, as in Motorcycle Maintenance… yep, I’m the girlwith the book out on Basic Motorcycle Maintenance and Repairsentitled ‘The ABC’s of Motorcycle Wrenching’.

I also teach classes, mostly to women, on how to do basic main-tenance on their own motorcycles. We have a lot of fun in thoseclasses, all the women ride over to my place and learn how to findthe spark plugs, oil filters, and other handy things on their ownbikes. I love supporting other women riders by sharing my knowl-edge about internal combustion engines in general - and motorcy-cles specifically.

Besides sharing my passion with other women, I also share mylove of riding with Deaf riders. I have spent many hours and daysthe past 7 years learning American Sign Language, so that I cancommunicate with and ride with deaf as well as hearing friends.I’m an honorary member of the CO Deaf Bikers Club, based outof CO Springs.

In 2009 I was honored by being chosen, both as a member of theDirty Dozen Riders, and also being invited to be a speaker at the“Secrets of Veteran Riders” seminar at the American MotorcyclistAssociation’s International Women & Motorcycling Conferenceheld up in Keystone, CO. Genevieve Schmitt was moderator andI spoke with two other veteran women riders at the event.

The Dirty Dozen Riders was a 10 day adventure/ordeal/sacri-fice/fun/difficult ride to raise money for breast cancer in particu-lar, but also other women’s cancers. Collectively, we raised over$45,000 that year for research for a cure. It was a distinct honor tobe included in both of these events, and so far, the high points ofmy riding career.

If you see me out there riding – wave at me, I’ll wave back!

Denver, CO – The first of January is how mostof the world celebrates the start of the new yearbut there are many who consider attending theColorado Motorcycle Show and Swap at theend of the month as the official start of the newyear and the new riding season.

This year marked the 33rd Annual Colorado Motorcycle Show andSwap and it was held January 29th and 30th at the National WesternComplex. Temperatures were predicted to be in the mid 50s for bothdays which still means that early morning riding can be a little briskbut not much of a deterrent judging from the sound of the bikesrolling in from both directions along I-70 and into the parking lot anhour before the doors even opened. By late morning, you couldspend as much time checking out the bikes outside as you could in-side.

Once inside the complex though, if you were planning on just at-tending one day you might reconsider. As the largest 2 day indoormotorcycle event in the Rocky Mountain region, you’ll find that be-tween checking out the various entries in the bike show, the enter-tainment in the stadium, the numerous vendors, and theconversations with brothers and sisters that one day is just notenough.

There’s a positive atmosphere to this show and there was an opti-mistic outlook for the year from both vendors and attendees alike re-garding the economy and the number of events that are beingplanned to attend.

Winding down the week-end is the charity auction where you canpick up some great deals and support some worthy causes which in-cluded this year the I Luv U Guys Foundation, the 9-11 FreedomRally, and ABATE of Colorado.

For more information on the Colorado Motorcycle Show & Swap, you can visit their website at www.comotorcycleshowandswap.com.

They have also developed an EZ Steer system which in-creases the stock rake (angle of the forks) by 5 degreeswhich significantly reduces the “trail”. Trail is what con-tributes to handling characteristics of our motorcycle. The lesser trail we have the better our bike handles. Rearautomotive style disk brakes come standard and all theirTrikes are fully CARB approved. Champion is the only fullline CARB approved manufacturers in California. Champion conversions are exemplaryfabrications in form and function and estheti-cally the Sportster Trike is no exception. ThisSporty employs the Zero-Flex suspension swingarm and dual coil over shocks. Also the overalllength of the bike is now 91” long instead of the85.40” of a factory Sportster, and the look is lowlong and lean.

This Champion Sportster Trike Conversion Sportywith its 1200 pulled nicely, it rides and handleslike a sports car. Fun in the first 5 minutes of rid-ing and within hours, ridiculously fun. I apolo-gized for the condition of their vehicle uponreturn. I normally do not traverse streams athigh speed; go off road cruising the perimeter ofthe local lake on a motorcycle… In fact I neverdo. Trikes tend to be rather utilitarian, large lum-bering masses with a ton of storage and thecushy seating of an SUV, but all that’s goodabout this Champion Sporty trike brought out allthat’s bad in me. This little hot rod was moreakin to an ATV and I was unstoppable. I’m sureChampion management is cringing at the mereinference that these beautifully-crafted threewheel street vehicles are remotely connected toanything off road because they absolutely areNOT.

What’s even more intriguing is an end user canjust purchase the conversion and literally bolt itonto their 2004 to current 883/1200 Sportster. All the parts and are shipped in five boxes any-where in the US and with a little mechanicalknow-how in 6 hours time you can “Trike yourBike.” How cool is that! The entire kit is only$4,995.00 to $5,995.00 MSRP with shipping any-

where in the U.S. under $300.00 bucks. Instruc-tions on removing and replacing the entire con-version are included and available on-line.

What’s the downside? In typical Harley fashionthe factory seat must go, secondly I need just alittle storage but tossing my magnetic tank bagon the rear fender was my solution and sorrykids this is a solo gig, there ain’t no room formama or papa for that matter. But no worriesChampion also offers the same kit conversion fora 2006 to current Harley Dyna at the same price!

All in all, this Trike the most fun I’ve had on threewheels in a long time. Whether you’re male orfemale, young or old this Trike is for you and re-member, you don’t even need a motorcycle li-cense in California to ride one so there is noreason not to enjoy the fun and freedom of mo-torcycling.

Breaking News from Champion: This Sportsterconversion can be purchased directly fromChampion and as mentioned It arrives in 5 boxesvia Fed-ex but if you order within 90 Days theywill ship for FREE! The conversion kit includeseverything you need to Trike out your 2004 tocurrent Sporty. If you prefer, Westminster H-Dis the authorized Harley/Champion Trike dealerfor all Orange County and they can install theconversion at their expanded service depart-ment. Customers can purchase a new bike orbring in their existing motorcycle and Westmin-ster will do the conversion. In fact, WestminsterH-D is authorized to install a Champion Trikeconversion on ANY cruiser of your choice, metricor otherwise and you can even rent a Trike tosee if it’s right for you.

BIG DOG ENTERS KIT MARKET: Following multiple failed attempts at reorganizing, finding a buyer, trial ballooning a $20K chopperthat never made it to production comes news thatBig Dog motorcycles, once the most successful ofthe Harley clones is entering the kit market via sell-ing everything you need to make a rolling Big Dogchassis on E-Bay! Their “bike in a box” is listed for$5995.00 sans motor and transmission and is avail-able now. Only time will tell if this idea meets withany success. Meanwhile Big Dog’s immediate fu-ture as a full production M/C manufacturer re-mains very cloudy.

ERIK BUELL BUILDING A STREET BIKE?: When H-D shut down all Buell production in 2009and folded the Buell company, Erik Buell was ableto recover many of the patents and licenses thatwere part of the Buell Company under Harley. Heagreed to a non compete clause that made him siton the sidelines for a year. Now that time and hisnon compete have expired and rumor has it thathe is preparing a road version of his 1190RR rac-ing bike.Don’t expect a big production run if indeed it doeshappen since Buell has neither the money, man-power nor infrastructure to build lots of these bikesvia a full production run. Maybe this announce-ment is geared to help that and maybe it’s just atrial balloon. The bike is supposed to hit the streetsby the end of this year. We will keep you posted.

POLARIS INDUSTRIES SHOWS HUGE SALES GAIN: Polaris Industries, parent company of Victory Mo-torcycles showed a whopping sales increase of24% in the year just ended. This included an 8%sales increase for their Victory M/C division mak-ing them along with Triumph the ONLY motor-cycle manufacturers to show an actual sales gainon big bikes.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON MADE SIGNIFICANT GAINS IN 2010:Proving you don’t have to sell more bikes to makemoney - prior to us going to print, H-D Corporateannounced their 4th quarter of 2010 earnings andsales as well as earnings and sales for the entireyear of 2010. Overall profits rose dramaticallyfrom $70.6 Million in 2009 to $259.7 Million in2010. All segments of the Harley family showedimprovement in 2010. This despite having to takea 4th quarter write off of $85 Million to buy back

senior secured stock. Total units shipped forHarley were 210,456 for the entire 2010 calendaryear. This was right on track with Harley’s earlierprojections. Harley also announced separately that36 dealerships around the country had closed asthe market place (and H-D) evened out its distribu-tion. This is approx. the same number of dealersthat closed in 2009. Harley did not specify as tothe type of dealer shops that closed, be they sec-ondary shops or full dealerships. Overall thebiggest gainer was Harley’s Financial Services di-vision, showing clearly that their previous prob-lems in that area were well behind them. You can read the full financial report on their web-site.

KAWASAKI ENTERS SALES REFERRAL DEAL WITH COSTCO:After years of courting the motorcycle manufac-turing community COSTCO warehouse chain hasfinally gotten one to bite. It was announced back inNovember that Kawasaki would be entering intoa trial program in Southern California based ondealer referrals. You see the bike at COSTCO, callan 800 number and are referred to a local dealerwho then makes the sale and pays COSTCO asmall referral commission. Its worked well foryears on new cars so why not bikes? No word yetas whether or not COSTCO will offer a 4-bikefamily pack!

ROYAL ENFIELD RETURNS TO THE USA: At the recent IMS show in New York City, TheRoyal Enfield Company of India introduced twonew models for 2011 to be sold in this country.Model 500 Classic Chrome and the Model 500Black Bullet. These classic looking bikes harkenback to another era with their simple construction, easy to work on and kill-proof motors. They stilllook like something out of a 1930 movie withGary Cooper riding them in a Legionnaire’s uni-form while being shot at during some desert battle. You may remember that Hoka Hey winner WillBarclay rode a Royal Enfield in the Himalayas aspart of his pre Hoka Hey training. Welcome back.

ETHANOL ADDITIVE USE WIDENS!: While we were all hibernating thru another winter, our pals at the oil companies and their buddies inthe refinery business were busy adding Ethanol topure gas and raising prices to boot. Now I am ofthe mind that Ethanol is not only NOT green as ituses up more resources than it replaces, BUT it is

also not very good for most motorcycle motors es-pecially Harley-Davidsons! We have found this tobe very true in both the Twin Cam B H-D motorbut also in a Gilroy Indians Evo based motor aswell. Many riders we have spoken with agree.Avoid fuel for your bike that contains Ethanol. To see which gas does and doesn’t simply go towww.pure-gas.org and you can get a list of safe sta-tions and fuels on a state by state basis.

NFL D.O.T. MOTORCYCLE HELMETS: What? you thought someone was already doingthese? Us too but we were wrong. Seems the NFLfinally granted a license to an entrepreneur inPennsylvania to begin production on a full line ofNFL logo’d and color correct half helmet andthree quarter helmets to be on sale nationally bylate spring. Team colors will be absolutely the cor-rect shades and a full helmet version is set to fol-low. Prices will be well under $100.00 each exceptfor the full face at $99.00. Now all we need to dois figure out how to square our H-D’s Teal &Cream paint job with a Saints Black & Gold halfhelmet!

HARLEY-DAVIDSON RECALL: This affects 6,964 motorcycles, specifically 2011Softails — The National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA) warns that owners of a2011 Softail manufactured between June and Oc-tober 2010 (whose motorcycles feature securitysystem kits accessories) will be receiving a recallnotice. These particular motorcycles feature a de-fect of the body control modules that results in anincomplete seal. As a result, there is the possibilityof water seepage into the modules, which in turnrisks engine stalls. If the rider is operating the mo-torcycles when the stall occurs, a (potentiallydeadly) crash is possible.

The actual recall date is Feb. 21, 2011. HarleyDavidson explains that - thus far - the company isaware of two warranty claims but not of any acci-dents or injuries.

When compared to the December 2009 Harley-Davidson recall, the 6,964 Softails are small pota-toes. Back then the company recalled 111,569motorcycles over front fuel tank mounts. Affectedwere 2009 and 2010 touring bikes that rolled offthe assembly lines between June 2008 and Novem-ber 2009.
