Where has all the time gone? It’s the seventh month of the year and it feels

like the first. My family is slowly coping with the loss of Marion – she was a

big part of all of our lives as well as Toni’s.

Many congresses have been hosted by QCBC this year and of course they

would not be successful if it was not for the voluntary help we get from

members; however we need more. I try to be there at the end of a congress

to assist with the tidy up and it’s always the same people so it seems.

We need new blood and this brings me to the point of the QCBC Board. Julie Jeffries retired

some months ago due to increased commitments with her other roles – ANC Secretary,

QBA Brisbane Zone Secretary and Congress Director. Julie joined the board in 2010 and

continues directing on Monday & Tuesday and being the Masterpoint Secretary and we

thank her for this as well as her years of service on the committee. The board has not acted

to fill the vacancy yet so if you are interested please talk to myself or Toni.

We have made a profit this financial year and have also paid off some of our long term loans to the

QBA & ABF. The air conditioning continues to give me a little stress; however with the amount of

money we have invested, it will be great for summer this year.

The club is looking particularly good and our playing numbers remain healthy. Lyn Gray

continues to obtain sponsorship for the club and for this we thank her. Sadly we lost two

long term members in Elaine Poulsen and Pam Murray recently.

QCBC conduct or host congresses for their members so please get behind the club and play in a

congress. If you are only going to play in one congress in a year make it at the club you are a

member of. Let’s make the last half of the calendar year an active one.

I would also like to take this opportunity to all those members who have assisted Kim and me

through this hard time. Ray Ellaway President

Mango Bridge Club by Annette Corkhill is the humorous chronicle of the bridge club of the same name in the town of Mango. Along with a litany of other problems, bridge club president Daniel Haywood is about to contend with a councillor who wants to sell off the bridge club property to developers. With deals taking place behind closed doors, it seems bleak for the club members and their beloved game. Add in a host of colourful characters, a few disgruntled neighbours, and some confused animals, and the reader is left wondering what will happen to this eclectic group of bridge players.

I have to say when I started, I was slightly skeptical about reading a novel about a bridge club. However, I was dead wrong. I loved every character and crazy escapade of Mango Bridge Club. Miss Corkhill has created a unique storyline, and one can imagine people like those from the novel exist in real life! I loved the inner dialogue of all the characters, including the animals! It was a unique treat to giggle at the poor life of Bubbles 15 or Bear’s straightforward mindset. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who wants a laugh. I especially liked Daniel and Emily, and the little girl Ella. She added a bit of childlike wonder to the entire crazy situation facing the bridge club. Mango Bridge Club by Annette Corkhill was a joy to read and review, and I hope she intends to write a sequel, so we can hear more about the adventures of this crazy bridge club!

"When Campbell Retired" When Campbell retired from work the thought was: what to do? A little weeding, maybe clean a window or two. A suggestion from the life partner of ‘maybe Bridge’ Greeted by "I'm not an old lady with hat and gloves Sipping tea from fine china or even mugs." However off we went to meet Keith and Clare; A couple of lessons and other players beware! Into supervised play and there we think we'll stay; However Clare said, ‘Out of kindy and into play.’ So here we are many years later, Enjoying the Bridge and also the chatter. Some say Bridge is a way of life. We think it keeps us out of strife. We do enjoy the day And I'm sure our opposition enjoy our play! Valarie Lane

Bridge's Fortunes Have Changed, but It Still Deals a Good Mental Challenge

On the cusp of his 90th birthday, Leonard Melander passionately pursues a lifelong love affair with

bridge, that sophisticated and complex grande dame of card games.

In 2007, at 82, Melander became the oldest player to win a U.S. national duplicate bridge

championship; he did it again in the senior division four years later. The game remains a rewarding,

if sometimes vexing, pursuit for the retired physician from West Bloomfield, Mich.

"It is the intellectual challenge, the problem-solving satisfaction" that makes bridge so attractive, said

Melander, who finished runner-up in the Super Senior Pairs at the Fall North American

Championships last December in Providence, R.I. "Let's put it this way: "Bridge is the equivalent of a

narcotic high."

The game has a similar allure for an estimated 25 million players in the U.S., including such fanatics

as Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. The majority of them are over 50. Researchers have discovered

that mentally challenging games such as bridge offer intellectual and social stimulation on a routine

basis.

Bridge's intricacies make it particularly appealing for those who want to sharpen acuity with mental

gymnastics. A study in 2000 at the University of California, Berkeley, found strong evidence that an

area in the brain used in playing bridge stimulates the immune system. Researchers suggest that is

because players must use memory, visualization and sequencing.

"When I first started playing in my late teens, I could not remember the cards played," said Burt

Saxon, 68, a retired teacher from Milford, Conn. "By my 50s, I pretty much recalled every card. Now

that I am older, I have to work at it. I believe bridge helps prevent my short-term memory from

completely declining."

A 2014 study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that playing card and board games can

help older people retain their mental sharpness. Researchers discovered that the frequency of

playing games is associated with greater brain volume in several regions that are affected by

Alzheimer's disease. Those who played more frequently also scored higher on cognitive tests.

"For a lot of people older than myself, and less capable physically, it is the only outside activity they

have," adds Paul Kelley, 75, a retired electrical engineer from Plymouth, Mass. "It really does good

things for seniors in keeping you mentally sharp, particularly with degradation of memory."

Australian Bridge Magazine produces a Novice edition every 2 months. It is a good magazine. The magazine is emailed to the subscribers. If a number of players want to subscribe, the price is reduced from $25 to $15 for the 6 issues. If you are interested, please contact the office.
