Where has the year gone? It’s November already.
Kim and I and all of Kim’s family went on a cruise paid
for by Marion, her sadly deceased mother, as this was
her way of celebrating her 80th. We had a fabulous, but
of course emotional time, but it forced both Kim and me
to rest which we both very much needed.
Our last function for the year is the Club Christmas
Party on 10th December. Come along and enjoy the
day where we acknowledge our hard working
volunteers to the club.
The first event for the year or some might say the last event for the year is the New Years Eve
Teams. Cheryl Stone is convening this event so if you would like to play, see Cheryl or perhaps
give her a ring.
A big welcome to Val Holbrook who has joined the Board of the club. Val normally plays
Wednesdays and Thursdays and I know she will be an asset to the team.
I would like every member to play in one QCBC event next year – this would assist us in making
every event a success.
One of the major needs of the clubs is for Playing Directors - if you are interested in becoming a
director, please give me a ring or talk to Toni. The current directors are stretched very thin due to
some retirements and we will shortly be desperate for your help. We try to assist with costs in
training and in giving you opportunities to become a great director.
2016 has not been friendly to Kim and me, so we can only hope that 2017 will be better.
Please all have a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year! Ray Ellaway, QCBC Chairman

Chairman’s Report 2016 Financially 2016 has been a very successful year for the club with an operating profit of $40,122 up from $19,985 in 2015. Additionally the loans from the QBA & ABF were paid out so overall debt has been reduced by $49,508. We are still reliant on income from the large
display sign at the front of the building but this is secure for at least another 5 years as Bishopps have exercised their option to extend the lease. Operating income increased by $28,231 while operating expenses increased by $8,095. Table fee income increased by $10,796 due to the full year effect of the table fee increase and the taking over of the Monday Social session previously operated by Denise Dodd. The increase in expenditure was largely due to increased property repairs & maintenance costs. The board intends to further reduce debt by paying out some member loans when surplus cash is available. As is the case in all clubs the success of the organisation depends on the hard work of volunteers and I would like to thank our session directors, board dealers, masterpoint secretary, teachers, help with play supervisors, sub-committee members and all the other members who assist the club in some way. We are in need of some additional directors due to recent retirements and members will be asked to express interest in receiving the relevant training. I must also thank the other board members for their hard work and support. Julie Jeffries stood down from the board after being a member since 2010 and will be replaced by Val Holbrook at the AGM. Thank you Julie for your contribution to the club as a board member and in your ongoing roles such as Masterpoint Secretary & Director. Finally there is our long serving Manager Toni Bardon who ensures that everything runs smoothly. Thank you Toni for your unwavering commitment to the club and the caring support you provide to the members. On behalf of the Board I offer my appreciation to all members for their support and I look forward to working with you again in 2017 for the betterment of the club.
Ray Ellaway.Chairman ( QCBC).
The Annual General Meeting went smoothly in
record-breaking time.
Jan Peach ran a Directors training session at
QCBC on October 29th. Unfortunately no budding
directors from QCBC attended. QCBC Directors
are desperately needed. Time to swing into action!
Sydney Spring Nationals: Congratulations to
Andy Hung who was part of the Spring Nationals
Open Team winners and to Pele Rankin and
Eileen Li who teamed up with two Western
Australians Alida Clark and Viv Wood to win the
Linda Stern Womens Teams.

At the favourable vulnerability I bid 5D which was doubled
automatically. On fairly normal play Peter managed to win
6 tricks for -1100. This lost us 11 imps, most of our 12 imp
losing margin in the match.
What was I thinking when I bid 5D? My main thought was that I was confident that we could
defeat 5S and our opponents might take the push at the vulnerability. 16000+ masterpoints
worth of experience told them that the 5 level belongs to the opponents and they were more
than satisfied to collect the penalty in 5DX.
Crime can be defined as breaking the law and it would be fair to say I broke the Law of Total
Tricks (LOTT). For those of you who don’t know, LOTT says that the number of total tricks
(which equals the number of tricks you can take in your best fit plus the number of tricks your
opponents can take in their best fit) equals the combined fits in those suits. So if we take this
board as an example, we both have 9 card fits in our best suits so there should be 18 total
tricks. This means if we can make 9 tricks they can make 9 tricks, if we can make 10 they can
make 8 and vice versa.
The LOTT fails a little on this hand in that there are only 16 total tricks. But if we look at the
possibilities it shows exactly why I shouldn’t have “saved”. If they can make 10 tricks (-620 to
us) then we can make 8 in diamonds (-500 when doubled). This saves us about 3-4 imps. If
they can make 11 tricks (-650) then we can make only 7 tricks (-800). This costs us about 4
imps. But if they can make only 9 tricks (+100) we can make 9 tricks (-300) which costs us
about 9 imps, the worst outcome of all. When I tabled dummy going for 1100 wasn’t going
through my mind, but I was thinking that there was a good possibility that I had taken the
phantom sacrifice.
So here we see that even with the favourable vulnerability there was little upside to bidding 5D.
My hand was too flat and there was too much potential for us to defeat 4S. Punishment was
swift and harsh.
Crime and Punishment by Tony Treloar
In the recent ANC, Peter Evans and I played Ron
Klinger and Avi Kanetkar in the 8th Round of the Open
Butler. This was the first board we played.

Dear Novice Players In conjunction with the Canberra Festival of Bridge (similar to the Gold Coast Congress) to be held in January 2017, Joan Butts is providing a FREE 10 week on-line Summer School designed to help Novice players prepare for competitions. The programme has already commenced but it is not too late to register & still get last week’s lesson.
Player development - Novice players interested in participating in a Summer School are invited to register for the program. You do not need to be attending the festival to participate in the on-line course. The course is tailored to two levels – teachers and novice players. To register, tick the appropriate box on the registration form - https://www.joanbuttsbridge.com/abfss-register?mc_cid=aeaef12f73&mc_eid=d2d30b88e9 . The program commenced on Wednesday put it is not too late to sign-up! Over 1,200 novice players are already on board this new initiative Nationally. Each week, you will receive an email from the ABF National Teaching Coordinator, Joan Butts, covering a different topic.
