Scriptural Rosary by the PnSA By: Karen Ann M. Phoa

As culminating activity for the month of the Rosary, the Paeskwela ni San Andres students did a Scriptural Rosary of the four mysteries (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious) last October 26, 2013. A Scriptural Rosary reads bible verses that pertain to each mystery being prayed. If some people find it difficult to pray the Rosary, the Paeskwela students were taught to change positions while praying to avoid feeling lethargic and sleepy (stand during the Gospel, kneel during the formula prayers, and sit during the meditation and intentions).

are a dominantly Catholic nation, according to Pope Pius XI, we have a special providential mission to bring the Gospel in Asia (missio ad gentes, that is, mission to those who have not heard of Christ). He urged us to go into the streets, to those who do not know Jesus.

After talking about popular piety, Fr. Nono Alfonso, SJ and Boots Anson-Roa hosted a talk on devotion and testimonies of faith from the celebrity and clergy. Celebrity guests were Christopher De Leon – founder of Oasis of Love Community, Coco Martin – a devotee of the Black Nazarene and Judy Ann Santos – a devotee of Our Lady of Manaoag while clergy guests were Msgr. Clem Ignacio – Rector of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene and Arch. Leonardo Legaspi, DD – Archbishop Emeritus of Caceres. They were able to share a fragment of their unknown life as inspiration of holding on to faith. Struggles and challenges have beset them but they were able to recognize small miracles which later transformed their lives toward something better. One testimony was from Arch. Legaspi where he said that in Bicol, politicians may share different view and oppose each other but when it comes to Ina (Our Lady of Penafrancia), they could talk as one.

If in Day 1, we had Streams of Encounter with God facilitated by catechists; on Day 2 we had Pathways of Communion and Renewal, a more formal teaching of new evangelization by seasoned clergy. We did not learn something new in a sense, rather, we discovered a new way of looking at our faith. As Bishop Ambo David told us that all we need is in the Scriptures. We need not interpret the scriptures because it is the role of the clergy, the magisterium and the religious. As lay men and women, all of us were tasked to evangelize, not to become teachers of faith but to become witnesses of faith. The Emmaus story serves as a timeless template for evangelization where at first Jesus is the Messiah Incognito but He was able to stir the hearts of the apostles so they may not lose hope and return to Jerusalem with new fervour and understanding of the scriptures. In today’s circumstances, we are challenged as a people of God to rediscover the ways how Jesus approached persons and called them – to read in between the lines of the sacred scriptures. On the other hand, our mother, The Blessed Virgin Mary is a model of faith for the evangelized and the evangelizers. She witnessed and pondered on the Word of God who became incarnate. She was chosen to be a hearer then to become the bearer of the Word. She was able to exemplify many virtues such as fidelity, humility, obedience, generosity and courage.

For some, the day closed with simultaneous Eucharist inside the Quadricentennial Pavilion and Youth Mass at the Plaza Mayor. For the younger generation and the young-at-heart, the day was not yet over for we were able to watch the “Concert of the Millennium”. The crowd, although it was already late in the evening, were still full of energy, singing at the top of their lungs their praises and songs together with celebrity singers and charismatic community builders. The concert’s highlight was when Cardinal Tagle went up the stage to dance, (much to everyone’s surprise) and sing the PCNE Theme Song: “Only in Jesus” words and music by Fr. Carlo Magno Marcelo. The refrain reads:

Only in Jesus do we move.Only in Jesus we are changed.Only in Jesus’ love can we heal the world’s pains.Let His life tell the story:Love that conquers sin and shameCome and see, share the myst’ry!Now it’s our mission to reveal to all His face.Only in Jesus all things are made new.Only in Jesus Day 3 was a sight to behold with interfaith rite

that prayed for peace. Focolare Movement started the rite with reflection on different meaning of peace, love and unity. Guests from other faith denominations were: Prof. Jukipli Wali – Dean of UP Institute of Islamic Studies, Bishop Cezar Punzalan – Chairman of the Phil. Council of Evangelical Churches, Venerable Miao Jing – Buddhist monastic, and Maharaj Rajesh Sharma – a Hindu priest. PCNE relived the Assisi experience

from Blessed Pope John Paul II. Cardinal Tagle asked for forgiveness from those the Church had hurt. The interfaith prayer was capped by symbolic offering of lighted lanterns while all sang “Make me a channel of your peace”, St. Francis of Assisi’s prayer.

Cardinal Tagle has another trick up his sleeves when he talked about Missionary Dimensions of Faith. Delegates of the 1st PCNE were not only from the Philippines but in some parts of Asia as well. Informally in an interview from some of the delegates from Malaysia, Brunei, Japan, Hong Kong, Los Angeles and India we have learned of the conditions of faith in their respective places. Something remarkable came up with all their sharing: there are many Filipino in foreign lands and they bring their faith with them and become active in their worship.

In the session, Wellsprings of Hope, we were again led to our respective session halls same as Pathways on Day 2. There, we were able to discuss and evaluate our experiences of the 1st PCNE. Some have shared their views and insights with the whole crowd and some just quietly answered Evaluation Sheets with guidance from moderators.

The last part that capped the whole conference was the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and the mission-sending of the delegates. Pope Francis was able to greet everyone in the conference and say at the end of his message: “Mabuhay ang Pilipinas. Mabuhay ang

Asia. Pagpalain kayo ng Diyos.” It was awe-inspiring to hear from the Supreme Pontiff the encouragement and blessing the Philippines have for doing the 1st PCNE. Before the mass concluded, the lights were switched off; instead, each and every one lighted a candle which was passed on from the Paschal candle held by Cardinal Tagle to the ushers then to the delegates. The surroundings became dark with only the twinkling light from candles illumine the pavilion that were like stars in the heavens.

Cardinal Tagle never ran out of the “new evangelization” when at the closing of the mass, we were asked to take out our mobile phones and requested simultaneously that we type in the message: “Behold! God makes all things new!” to be sent to people that were important to us: to our parents, siblings, relatives, colleagues and friends.

It is from Bishop David we learned that we won’t hear something “new” if there weren’t wrong with the “old” one. There are things, as he said, that we must abandon if we want to evangelize the way Christ had commanded us. From the “old” evangelization, we talked about Jesus, but in this “new” evangelization, we must let Jesus talk through us and lead the way so that an individual can have a personal encounter with God. We have found “new” evangelization; it is in our hope that we may use this for the people God has entrusted to our care.

very dear to him. The servant is very sick and the Roman master wanted Jesus to heal him. However instead of going directly to Jesus the Roman master asked Jewish elders to intercede for him to Jesus. Jesus went with the elders and as they were nearing his house, the Roman officer told Jesus, `` Lord , I am not worthy that you should enter my house but only say it and it will be done.’’

This Gospel speaks of two things, first is the power of intercessory prayers and secondly, our confidence that God answers our prayers.

Saint Paul in his first letter to his assistant Timothy also talks about the power of intercessory prayers and petitions. Saint Paul wrote, ``First of all, I urge you that petitions, prayers, requests and thanksgivings be offered

to God for all people, for kings and others in authority…. This is good and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to know the truth….’’ (Tim 2:1-4)

Every All Saints Day and All Souls Day on the first and second day of November, we pray and remember our dead loved ones. God is pleased when we pray for our dead and for all the souls in purgatory. We are the pilgrim Church and it is our duty to offer prayers, petitions and thanksgiving prayers for our loved ones who have passed on and for all the poor souls in purgatory. Let us pray, Oh my Jesus forgive our sins, save all souls from the fires of hell and lead all souls into heaven specially those who most need of thy mercy.

Scriptural Rosary by PnSA... from page 4

According to some PnSA students, this Scriptural Rosary is their most memorable Rosary experience, for it is their 1st time to pray the 4 mysteries, quite a long prayer, indeed. But it made some of them realize the value of meditating the events in the life of Jesus Christ. For some, the activity of making their own rosaries is their favorite. Also, attending Rosary rallies let them experience partaking of a sense of community with other co-devotees while being able to remember story of our Lord. But most of them value the Rosary as it is an opportunity for them to get together with their families (daily family prayer or during wake of their beloved who passed away) and friends (doing vigil for a big activity or event for their Parish or school project).

Truly, the Rosary is a miracle prayer, for it is in this “repetitive” prayer that Mama Mary prays for us, and with us. She leads us and our prayers to the Lord, bringing with her our intentions, together with all the angels and saints. This prayer helps us become Holy, as what we are intended to be.
