We have had a busy start to the academic year. The Year 7 and 8 Halloween disco was well attended last half

term and was a tremendous success. Thank you to the Year 11 Prom committee, who organised the event and to all the staff that supported on the evening. Our students benefit from a whole range of school trips, it’s

been an exceptionally busy time, we have had Geography (Stratford) field trip, Spelling Bee, Media trip (London), Art (Southwold) and the Year 11 Careers Fayre to name a few.

The winter weather is well and truly upon us, please remind your son/daughter that hoodies are not allowed in

school and a decent warm winter coat is now a necessity. It is wonderful to see the vast majority of students looking so smart every day. I hope you will join me in congratulating them in how well presented they are

when attending school. All uniform expectations are laid out in the student planner and indeed are available on the new school web site.

Occasionally we receive complaints from our neighbours about the way a very small minority of our students

conduct themselves on their way to and from school. We would therefore ask parents to remind their children that it is not acceptable to stray onto other people's property for any reason. We also ask that students remain

polite and respectful to our neighbours at all times.

For reasons of safety, parents are reminded not to drop students off directly outside the school, or park in a

manner which is likely to cause an obstruction or inconvenience to our neighbours (i.e., across driveways, double parking etc.). If you transport your child to school in the morning then please drop him or her off a

short distance away from school - so you do not have to drive too close to the school entrance. We would be

very grateful for your support in this matter.

Thank you to those of you that attended the parent information evening regarding Putteridge joining the

Chiltern Learning Trust. Please do take a look at the frequently asked questions on the web site and feel free to write in to provide your feedback, either by letter or e-mail to the consultation e-mail address

(consultation@putteridge.org). We are now firmly in the middle of the formal consultation process.

On Friday we will be observing the traditional 2 minutes silence at 11am for Remembrance Day and our Head boy and girl will be presenting a wreath at the Stopsley War Memorial. In addition, this week all students

have also been given House assemblies on the theme of Remembrance. For Year 7 parents please ensure you attend the Year 7 Information Evening on Thursday of this week, starting at 6.30pm in the hall. Once

again I would like to thank you all for your immense support, working together to ensure your son/daughter

enjoys a quality education.

OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY: We are very proud of how the majority of our students represent

the school. However, occasionally we have concerns raised by our neighbours regarding silly behaviour from a few. Please encourage your son/daughter to travel to and from school in a respectable manner at all times.

WE HAVE RECEIVED CONCERNS from nearby residents about the number of cars picking up and dropping off students at the school gates and in Selsey Drive. This makes it very difficult for residents who live on the estate opposite the school to get out onto Putteridge Road due to cars parked on both sides of the road. This becomes a very dangerous situation at peak times and we would ask parents/carers to be mindful of this.

NEW FLAGS FOR PUTTERIDGE

I was asked to produce designs for flags that were to be placed

outside the entrance to the school. We had to decide on

photographs that would complement the five words which

would represent the school. They were: Diversity,

Independence, Resilience, Community and Excellence. A few

multi-cultural students were chosen to be in the photographs

that I had taken.

We decided how we wanted to position them, for the community. We

got the students to place all their hands together, by doing this we

wanted to emphasise the diversity within Putteridge High School. We

had gone through the same process for the rest of the flags. I then went

on to manipulate the pictures to give them a good effect. The

Putteridge logo and the words were then added to the pictures and

they were then complete. To conclude, witnessing the flags everyday

during school, they look professional and really complement the school.

Looking at them everyday is something that I am proud of, as I was able

to contribute towards these flags and that is a great opportunity and

achievement for me.

Local Author, Earl Venner, asked our students to submit some of their poems to possibly be published in his upcoming book. I’m proud to announce that Eva Karaphillides, Drew Lenton and Jayden Hay were all finalists in the competition and Eva Karaphillides’ poem was chosen to be published. Well done to all participants and special congratulations to Eva!

Blood, guts, and gore Splattered across the floor A fallen soldier with memories to scar, I wonder where his comrades are? An empty gun in shaking hands- Trembling legs among feet that don’t stand; Stomping from behind me, I turned to see None other than my enemy A bullet fired straight- I moved, but too late. “Game over” the screen said, Then I went to bed.

GEOGRAPHY TRIP TO THE OLYMPIC PARK

Year 10 had a great day looking at urban regeneration at the Olympic Park site last Thursday, they

experienced travelling on the Javelin Train, did field work in and around the park, and bravely took

on the 178m slide from the top of the Orbit.

It’s really important that all students check their school email on a regular basis (daily if possible). School staff regularly send important information to students via their school email addresses; sometimes this might need action by the student.. School emails can be accessed from home if students have not had the opportunity to do this at school.

Students in years 7 -11 have access to the Science resources on Doddle. There is a link on the school website that takes students

directly to the website. The school user id is “Putteridge High School” and all passwords are “putteridge” unless students have changed them. Science staff have given usernames out but if students cannot remember them, please email Mrs Caldbeck, Director of Learning for Science rcaldbeck@putteridge.org.

We are fortunate to be able to offer students the use of the PiXL Maths App (for KS4 only). User information is as follows:

Putteridge students learn how to develop their ‘soft’skills

London Luton Airport launched its Connect programme earlier this year, offering up to 300 pupils at local secondary schools support in developing their communication skills to help prepare them for the world of work.

Connect aims to equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to make a smooth transition from education to the workplace. A small group of our Year 10 students from across the ability range took part in a two-part workshop in October, helping them to tackle real-world scenarios such as composing professional emails, thinking about body language during conversations and presentation tips for interviews.

London Luton Airport has invested £8000 to develop the course, which was delivered in conjunction with local not-for profit training provider Develop EBP. Connect is a new initiative for 2016 and forms part of LLA’s ‘Inspiring Young People’ community commitment.

“It was fun as well as informative”.

“Learning about different ways of communicating, both verbal and non-verbal has given me confidence

as I am thinking about Work Experience”.

Year 11 Careers Fayre

Ashcroft, Putteridge and Stopsley High Schools hosted the sixth Combined Careers Fayre for Year 11 at Stopsley Baptist Church Auditorium in October.

Approximately 500 Year 11 students from across all three high schools attended the event at various times throughout the day, each group spending about an hour visiting over 30 providers. There were representatives from all the main colleges; Luton Sixth Form, Barnfield, Central Beds, Bedford, Oaklands, Newman Sixth Form, North Herts; Apprenticeship providers; Luton Borough Council, JTL, University of Bedfordshire, Luton & Dunstable Hospital, NHS and UOB Healthcare, Army Careers plus local businesses; Leonardo, Vauxhall Motors, Hayward Tyler, Thomson TUI and many more.

As always this was a great opportunity for our students to obtain as much information as possible to help them make the important decisions facing them over the next few months.

As part of Wider Learning at Putteridge High School students from all year groups are exposed to a wide variety of Careers & Work Related Learning opportunities which provide both enrichment and an insight into possible pathways following their education at high school. I am proud to share with you some of the exciting events, visits and programmes that our students have been involved in over the past few months. I hope that you will enjoy reading them.

Year 10 Work Experience

A reminder that students in Year 10 should be making every effort to organise their Work Experience. Many have already secured fixed placements so a huge well done to them. It is hoped that all students will have a placement by the end of this term. Please contact me if you have any queries.
