The Academy welcomes the UCSF community in celebrating our educators! On behalf of our members,

our staff and the entire campus community engaged with advancing excellence in our shared education mission, thank you for joining us.

From the Director

Our Leadership Council represents our membership broadly and provides over-sight through a shared governance structure. We aspire to support the people who execute and advance UCSF’s education mission, promote advances in teaching and learning, champion faculty who teach, and nurture future educators.

Our programs include stewardship for a robust suite of endowed chairs in educa-tion, and the following key events and activities:

Annual Education Showcase, features Education Scholarship and Innova-tion from across UCSF, and offers faculty development workshops (April 4-5, 2016), Faculty development for teachers is planned and executed in collabora-tion with RaDME (Research and Development in Medical Education).

Educational Innovations Funding program, in collaboration with UCSF’s Pro-gram in Interprofessional Education and Library, supports campus investigators and is an important source of career development, professional identity forma-tion, mentoring and community building in education. (annual call is currently open: http://open-proposals.ucsf.edu/edinnovations/2016)

Advocacy, in collaboration with Academic Affairs, has focused on improving edu-cators’ capacity to demonstrate scholarly accomplishments for advancement and promotion through a streamlined Educator Portfolio integrated into Advance.

Membership, central to today’s celebration, is exciting for the exceptional enter-ing “class” that includes, notably, our first cohort of members from the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy (annual cycle opens March 2016).

Additionally, today we recognize outstanding administrators who provide inspired and critical support to the education mission, and a wonderful cadre of excellent teachers who contribute remarkable work that is highly appreciated by their educator colleagues.

We appreciate your participation in welcoming our new members, and your sup-port of educators across UCSF!

She teaches second-year medical students in Infection, Immunity and Inflammation and students, residents, and fellows on inpatient medicine and infectious diseases teams. As residency program site director, Dr. Babik oversees all inpatient clinical rotations and has spearheaded major structural changes to improve the educational environment and quality of life for residents. As site director for the ID fellowship, she initiated changes to significantly improve the service/education balance for ID fellows. Harry Hollander, Director, Internal Medicine Residency Training Program, described Dr. Babik’s impact: “She is a hero amongst the residents and is a shining example of administrative excellence and unwavering advocacy for the trainees for whom she is responsible.”

Angel Chen, RN, MSN, PNPDepartment of Family Health Care Nursing

Angel Chen is Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing, Vice Chair of the Department of Family Health Care Nursing, and co-chair of the Curriculum Development Working Group for the Program on Interprofessional Education (PIPE). Her teaching incorporates interprofessional education for both learners and faculty in classroom and clinical teaching settings in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program. School of Nursing leaders describe Angel Chen as a passionate and skilled educator whose work with a diverse group of learners, faculty members, clinical preceptors and interprofessional colleagues has advanced the level of scholarship in the School of Nursing. “She has consistently been at the forefront of engaging faculty in improving in the way we teach our learners, starting with the SON Master Core Curriculum revision and evaluation, to the implementation of an online clinical tracking system across our School for our twelve specialties,” wrote Dean David Vlahov. “Without Angel’s strong leadership skills”, said PIPE curriculum development co-chair Maria Wamsley, “I don’t believe this curriculum would have become a reality”.

New MembersJennifer Babik, MD, PhDDepartment of Medicine

Denise Davis, MDDepartment of MedicineDr. Davis is Clinical Professor of Medicine, a Specialist for minority students and Associate Director for Faculty Development in the San Francisco VA Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education. “In her four years as a full-time faculty member at the SFVA and UCSF, Dr. Davis has made a tremendous impact on our culture and our educational programs,” notes Michael Shlipak, Chief of General Internal Medicine at the SFVA. Dr. Davis teaches students, residents, interprofessional trainees and faculty. Much of her teaching is devoted to improving communication in the health care setting and she has been a leader among clinician educators and counsels many on faculty issues and professionalism. Since she and Dr. Calvin Chou were appointed mentorship leaders and coordinators for the medical service at the SFVA, they have launched novel programs to link mentors with mentees, focusing on those from groups traditionally under-represented in medicine. Her series of workshops, “Mentoring for the Twenty-first Century: Mentoring Across Racial Differences” is a unique contribution to faculty development. Dr. Davis has won a Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching and was named VA Superstar in 2014.

Mitchell Feldman, MD, MPhilDepartment of Medicine

Dr. Feldman is Professor of Clinical Medicine, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Mentoring, Interim Chief of the Division of General Internal Medi-cine, and Co-Director of the CTSI’s Mentor Development Program. Dr. Feldman has served as a longitudinal clinical preceptor in the Medicine for third year students, who describe an “endlessly attentive and enthusi-astic teacher with a particular knack for verbalizing and teaching the skills that many find too challenging to put into words – how to build rapport, express empathy, use nonverbal cues, and create trust. He is an excel-lent clinician role model – gentle and intuitive with his patients, a true embodiment of patient-centered care.” Dr. Feldman was the inaugural Director of Faculty Mentoring at UCSF, appointed in 2006 to create and lead this new initiative. His commitment to a strong mentorship program is rooted in belief that effective mentoring can create a vibrant, diverse and engaged campus and a robust academic research enterprise. Per Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Brian Alldredge: “Mitch has transformed the culture of mentorship at UCSF in a way that has had a tangible, and measureable, beneficial effect on the climate for our faculty.”

Ivan Gomez, MD, MSDepartment of Family and Community MedicineDr. Gomez is Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and directs the UCSF Fresno Family Medicine Residency Program in Fresno, California. A pillar at UCSF Fresno and a leader in the field of Family Medicine, Dr. Gomez had enhanced fellowships in Maternal, Child Health and HIV Care that fill a gap in the central valley and continue to attract trainees. As a teacher, Dr. Gomez leads by example, providing excellent patient care while creating an educational environment for self-exploration and learning. He developed a curriculum that focuses on the local community’s social determinants of patient health with a specific rotation experience designed to promote and teach new physicians skills in advocacy and leadership. Dr. Gomez created an innovative and popular faculty development program to strengthen educational teaching skills using objective structured teaching exercises (OSTEs) and reflection sessions. As department chief Alex Moir recognizes: “Ivan Gomez is an engaged and innovative faculty member, a trail blazer in our march to a scholarship driven profession, and a seasoned academic leader.”

Claire Horton, MD, MPHDepartment of Medicine

Dr. Horton is Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine, Medical Director of the General Medicine Clinic (GMC) at SFGH and Co-Director of the Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Leadership curriculum for the Primary Care residents. Since joining the faculty, she has been dedicated to improving the educational experience of trainees in the GME and on the wards. Dr. Horton led the creation of a curriculum to improve systems of care and introduced patient panel reports so residents could receive real-time feedback. As Medical Director, Dr. Horton mentors a growing group of clinician educators and oversees new programmatic development. “The GMC has flourished as an educational environment because Dr. Horton has built a cadre of energetic clinical educators, selecting faculty members with complementary interests, fostering their passion for education, and creating systems to support these faculty members as educators”, praised former Assistant Medical Director Elizabeth Davis. Dr. Horton is an outstanding mentor and teacher, a “fantastic interactive listener” and a role model in providing care for medically and socially complicated patients with empathy and patience. She received the SFGH Rick Haber Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011.

Conan MacDougall, PharmD, MASDepartment of Clinical PharmacyDr. MacDougall is Professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy and chairs the school’s Educational Policy Committee. He directs core coursework in Infectious Disease Pharmacotherapy for pharmacy, medical, and nursing students as well as pharmacy residents and infectious diseases fellows, for whom he is an outstanding clinical mentor. Dr. MacDougall is the most highly decorated educator in the School of Pharmacy in the last decade, with eight awards for excellence in didactic instruction, four Long Foundation Excellence in Teaching awards from graduating classes, and the Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching award. “Most impressive” notes Associate Dean Tina Brock, “is his leadership in developing his residents as clinical teachers. He allocates time for his clinical trainees to take part in UCSF faculty development programs, mentors them in teaching via lectures, workshops and small group activities throughout the year, and ensures they get multiple peer evaluations to support their continued development as educators.” Dr. MacDougall’s reputation as a “teacher of teachers” contributed to his being named the national recipient of the prestigious Albert B. Prescott Pharmacy Leadership Award in 2012.

Steven Pletcher, MDDepartment of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Pletcher is Associate Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology, Otolaryn-gology Residency Program Director, chair of the Otolaryngology Educa-tion committee and Chief of Otolaryngology at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. He teaches residents and medical students, primarily in the clinical setting, and mentors Otolaryngology residents and Otolar-yngology-inclined medical students, who find him thoughtful, genuinely in-terested in their success and happiness, and invested in them as people. Dr. Pletcher led the department through the transition to the ACGME Next Accreditation System, and all nine otolaryngology residents gradu-ating over the past 3 years have matched at top fellowships throughout the country. His residents recently won the inaugural Great Catch award for patient safety as well as the Surgical Consultant of the Year award, selected by the graduating Emergency Medicine residents. “He sets the tone for a training program that excels in professionalism, patient care, and systems-based practice,” wrote Bobby Baron, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. “He’s an outstanding contributor to the Uni-versity’s GME program whose leadership, professionalism, and reliability serve as a model both within his department and within the university.”

Sumant Ranji, MDDepartment of MedicineDr. Ranji is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Associate Program Director for quality and safety programs for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. “Dr. Ranji is extremely effective in a variety of settings; from overseeing a team of residents and students on the inpatient medical service to moderating quality conferences for a variety of trainees and peers, he approaches clinical medicine and the process of delivering care with unusual lucidity and clarity, which he easily transmits to others,” explains Residency Program Director Harry Hollander. The residency curriculum in quality improvement and patient safety includes a rotation for first-year residents that has been a model for other programs and is one of the most highly rated educational experiences for residents in internal medicine. Additionally, Dr. Ranji has worked to ensure resident integration into medical center quality improvement programs, mentored resident quality improvement and patient safety projects, and helped develop and expand the department of medicine’s quality and patient safety symposium, fundamentally impacting the training of all internal medicine residents and significantly improving the care of patients at all three hospitals.

She is co-PI of the Reynolds Foundation Next Steps in Physicians’ Training in Geriatrics II grant, which aims to advance the care of older adults by improving the ability of physicians to work in interprofessional teams, and will engage all medical students. Dr. Rivera helped to create the vision and framework for interprofessional education at UCSF, and is leading curricular and faculty development opportunities to support interprofessional learning and teaching in the SOM Bridges curriculum. Based on PIPE co-leader-ship with Dr. Rivera, Maria Wamsley extols: “In all her leadership roles, Dr. Rivera has demonstrated tremendous skill in engaging stakeholders, creating a vision, ensuring that our work is informed by best practices and evidence-based, and leading a team of faculty to accomplish goals.”

George Saba, PhDDepartment of Family and Community MedicineDr. Saba is Professor of Clinical Family and Community Medicine and Associate Program Director of the Family and Community Medicine residency at SFGH. As the long-term Director of Behavioral Sciences for the residency program, he has been a champion of diversity at UCSF and in the specialty of family medicine; as a result, the UCSF FCM residency program has had the highest proportion of underrepresented in medicine residents among all UCSF residency programs over the past 15 years. Dr. Saba is the principal coordinator and teacher of behavioral science, a critical component of family medicine training. “He has made behavioral science not only a fully integrated element of the residency curriculum, but one of the curricular components most valued and appreciated by our residents”, says department chair Kevin Grumbach. Dr. Saba is a beloved teacher whose impact is felt at all levels. As Residency Program Director Diana Coffa, herself a former trainee, notes: “Dr. Saba teaches the “unmeasurables” in medicine: interrelatedness and communication, finding meaning in practice and maintaining a dedication to the greater good. He teaches us, fundamentally, how to be physicians.”
