No matter what you’re interested in, the University has a fantastic range of opportunities to stay active, have fun, and take part in Sport. The start of the year is always a fantastic
time to dust off those trainers, get back into a sport you haven’t played for a long time, or even add to your regular activity schedule.
Our new programme ‘Urban Active’ is great for anyone wishing to have a bit of fun and meet new friends, and the popular ‘Coached Sport’ programme is back again for 2015
offering 6-8 week courses suitable for all levels in sports like Rowing, Tennis, and Futsal. For those wanting something a bit more competitive, the Campus Sport leagues and
events are perfect; get a team with your friends and get involved in fun regular matches. Over 35 Sports clubs and teams also continue to provide social, training, and competitive
opportunities, and are a great chance for you to challenge yourself.
CitySpace’s offering of gym and fitness memberships, and a huge selection of classes will make sure that you can achieve your health and lifestyle goals, and our team of fully
trained staff are ready to help you achieve your ambitions for the year.

FacilitiesThe sporting element of the building features a large modern sports hall with spectator seating, an adjoining spacious multi purpose room, an internal climbing wall, an injury support suite, and a state of the art 70 station technogym fitness suite. CitySpace is the new home for a wide range of sporting and physical activities, including the University BUCS (British University and College Sport) teams and clubs, Elite Athlete Support, Community and Outreach, plus various national and regional events and competitions.

EVENTS The Urban Active Project is funded through the National Lottery from Sport England and other partners. The aim of the programme is to get more students and staff active and increase the number of people making sports participation a habit for life.
The programme offers fun, social and engaging activities for students on and off campus in a number of different ways through the FLEXI, CLUB SOCIAL and EVENTS.
CLUB SOCIALClub Cardio A fun twist on traditional sports that doesn’t require any previous skill. It’s all about working out, socialising and enjoying sport in a relax environment to an up tempo music beat. Sports include tennis, basketball, badminton, rugby, volleyball, martial arts and multi-sport circuits.
Club Casual Come along by yourself or with a group of mates and join in a range of different activities including battle badminton, cricket, dodge ball, football tennis, futsal, rounders, soft ball, tag rugby, table tennis, volley ball and Ultimate Frizbee to name but a few.
Club Glow Evening glow sports where the lights are turned off, we UV up the equipment and create a unique playing environment. It is recommended you wearwhite or light coloured clothes for these activities. Face/ body paint optional. Glow versions of basket ball, volley ball, dodge ball, badminton, table tennis and tennis will be delivered throughout the year.

Casual CreditsWe have blocks of 10 credit discount books for sale so you can enjoy local facilities at a subsidised rate. Credits can be used anytime during the day or evening within the facilities operating hours.
Current credits availableSwimming credits at £10 for a block of 10 for students, prices vary for Staff, Family and Friends.We also have swimming equipment you can borrow including kickboards and pull buoys.
FLEXI Want to try a new sport but don’t have the right equipment? Want to get active but don’t want to pay a membership fee? Through the Flexi you can borrow equipment from us for short periods of time to try out new sports or just get together with your mates. We also offer subsidised vouchers you can purchase which will allow you to attend local sports and fitness venues at discounted rates at your own leisure without any sign up fees.
Equipment hireTwo hour equipment hire for use on university grounds including both campuses and halls of residences. We have equipment for a variety of sports, free for you to hire to enjoy playing with mates.
We’ve got loads of fun events planned for this year with some different and fun ways to keep active in sport. We will be running themed events, Beach Festivals, Cycle-in Movie Nights, Glow Festivals and an Urban Games where City Campus, London Campus and St Peter’s Campus will compete for the Campus Challenge Cup.

SPORTS A-Zthe University. We currently have 3 Badminton teams, 2 male and 1 female, all teams compete in the BUCS leagues against other Universities on a Wednesday afternoon. The badminton club has developed significantly over the last few years, the club caters for all level of abilities whether you’re keen on competing or just want to play recreationally.
BasketballThe University of Sunderland Basketball Club is a fast growing, ambitious and competitive club. They compete not only in the BUCS leagues against other Universities on a Wednesday afternoon but also in the Durham Basketball League. There is also an opportunity to play in the England Basketball National League Division 3 North with our partnership with Wearvalley.Our head coach Brian Calder has played in UK Professional, Senior, Junior and Development level with both male and female players. His coaching history includes: Newcastle Eagles (assistant coach), East Durham and Houghall Sports Academy and Currently Brian is Head Coach for the Wear Valley Senior Mens Team.
Women’s BasketballThe University of Sunderland Basketball Club is a fast growing, ambitious and competitive club. They compete not only in the BUCS leagues against other Universities on a Wednesday afternoons but also in the Durham County Basketball Association League. Our head coach Harry Wood welcomes members of any level or experience.
CheerleadingCheerleading is a sport that uses organised routines made from elements of some tumbling, dance, jumps and stunting and it’s a great way to get involved in sport at the University.We’re looking for enthusiastic boys and girls who are up for a laugh and want to try something new. Cheerleading is a great form of exercise and it’s really fun too. You don’t need any experience so if you’re interested come along to a training session.
CricketThe University of Sunderland Cricket Club is competing in British Universty & College Sport (BUCS) North Division.
We currently have one mens teams that compete in the BUCS indoor and outdoor leagues against other Universities on a Wednesday afternoon.The club trains throughout the winter semesters and currently plays all its matches at the Ashbrooke Cricket Ground in the city during the summer semester.
DanceIf you’re interested in any form of dance then come along and join the University of Sunderland dance club, you don’t need any prior experience and everyone is given the chance to compete.The dance club competes in various competitions throughoutthe year and also welcome other universities to the competition they host in CitySpace each year.
AikidoAikido is a Japanese martial art and is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks. Aikido can be categorized under the general umbrella of grappling arts.The club is coached by Peter Seth who is highly qualified and experienced coach who has been involved in the club for many years, he is dedicated to achieving the potential out of his participants whether beginner or expert he is able to cater for all.
American FootballAmerican Football is a competitive team sport known for mixing strategy with physical play. The object of the game is to score points by advancing the ball into the opposing team’s end zone. The ball can be advanced by carrying it (a running play) or by throwing it to a teammate (a passing play). Points can be scored in a variety of ways, including carrying the ball over the goal line, catching a pass from beyond the goal line, tackling an opposing ball carrier in his own end zone, or kicking the ball through the goal posts on the opposing side. The winner is the team with the most points when time expires at the end of the last play.
Our American Football team currently plays in the British University American Football League (BUAFL). We provide all the equipment and pads you need to get started.
ArcheryArchery is a one of the Universities biggest clubs, it is the art, practice or skill of propelling arrows with the use of a bow. This successful and exciting club will cater for all from beginners to elite with the opportunity to compete in a wide range of university competitions.
AthleticsThe University Of Sunderland Athletics club offer training to all levels of athletes through circuit, weight, track and general fitness. It is the perfect way to improve your fitness in a fun environment. There are opportunities to compete for the university in both indoor and outdoor events.

FutsalWe have both a men’s and women’s teams in BUCS.Following on from the success of last year, the biggest Futsal league in Sunderland is back. Anyone over the age of 16 can enter, you just need to be part of a team (minimum 5 and maximum 10 players per team.) The F.A. affiliated league has two seasons per year, entry starts at just £10 per player per season and matches will be played every Sunday from 5th October 2014. All league referees are fully F.A. qualified and all league winners and top goal scorers will be presented with a prestigious trophy at the end of each season.
Gaelic FootballThe University of Sunderland has a large Irish student uptake and we offer Gaelic Football among our list of sport clubs.Gaelic football is played by teams of 15 on a rectangular grass pitch with H-shaped goals at each end. The primary object is to score by kicking or striking the ball with the hand and getting it through the goals. Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, soloing (dropping and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands), kicking, and hand-passing to their team-mates.
The Gaelic football team take part in the British Championships each year and various friendly matches throughout the year.
GolfThere are lots of ways to get involved in golf at the University no matter which level you play at.We currently have a mixed golf team competing in BUCS.Staff and students are welcome to take advantage of our partnership with Sunderland Golf Centre.
HockeyThis is a popular club at the University of Sunderland, teams play in the British University & College Sport (BUCS) North League. Games are played on a Wednesday afternoon with a mixed team taking the field in other competitions.
The club offers opportunities in coaching qualifications Level 1 and Level 2; leading to player development and possible employment
EquestrianEquestrian is another one of our many successful and ever growing clubs at the university and is open to all people. Riding lessons are available at Penshaw Equestrian Centre. We also have a competition team who participate in both dressage and show jumping events/competitions across the academic year.

Marine Adventure ClubThe marine activities centre in Sunderland is home of our wet provisions, once inducted you can surf, kayak and even rock climb should the weather not be sufficient to be out on the sea with. You may even get the chance to compete for the university in these extreme sports.
NetballThe University of Sunderland Netball Club is one of the most developed clubs in the University. We currently have two squads who play in the BUCS North Division.
We have a dedicated professional coach in place to develop players from all levels to reach their potential. They are responsible for all coaching and selection of the team.Our netball teams play weekly matches across the country in the BUCS (British University and College Sport) leagues and cups.
Membership to the University of Sunderland netball club also offers students the opportunity to join the Sunderland City Predators, bringing together the best students and local athletes to form a North East Regional Team.
RowingRowing with University Sport Sunderland Rowing Club gives you the chance to become part of a lively, friendly, ambitious team. The club caters for all levels of abilities from trying it for the first time to elite athletes.
Men’s Rugby UnionThe University of Sunderland Rugby Club caters for players of all abilities, from those who have never played rugby before to players who have represented their county at various levels. The University currently have 2 teams competing in BUCS (British University and College Sport) league and cups.
The club plays weekly matches competing against other Universities around the country; they play their home matches at either Ashbrooke Sports Ground or Ryhope Road.
Women’s RugbyWomen’s rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and one of the most successful at Sunderland University. The team trains weekly at Ashbrooke Sports Ground and compete in BUCS (British University and College Sport) league and cups, against other Universities around the country.
SnowsportsThe University of Sunderland Snowsports Club (U.S.S.C) is one of the biggest clubs at Sunderland with over 150 members each year. From skiing to snowboarding this club offers everything you need, from lessons for beginners to competitions for the more advanced. The club also arranges its own Sports Tour to Val Thorens, France and compete in the Kings and BUSC competitions each year.
JudoThe judo club at the University of Sunderland is a well organised group giving great opportunities in the sport whether a novice or expert you will be able to progress.Judo is the ideal way to get fit, stay fit and have lots of fun training.The club has a dedicated judo coach,who is responsible for athlete progression and lessons
KarateLooking to get involved in Karate at the University of Sunderland? We offer a wide range of classes including beginners classes for those who who are just starting out in Karate, advanced classes, ladies only classes and competition classes. Our Karate sessions in City Space are on Tuesday Thursday and Friday. Come and get involved.
Karate-do is ‘The Way of the Empty Hand’. It is a martial art in which the ultimate purpose is not to seek to win, but to work towards perfection of character, self-control and self-discipline by the accumulation of experience through training. It is also a form of self-defence using all parts of the body which, by hard and systematic training, become effective and powerful weapons. Karate encompasses whole body movements which develop balance, flexibility, co-ordination, speed and power. This is achieved through the constant practice of the basic movements (Kihon).
Kickboxing & Self DefenceKick-boxing refers to the sport of using martial-arts-style kicks and boxing-style punches to defeat an opponent in a similar way to that of standard boxing. Kick-boxing is a standing sport and does not allow continuation of the fight once a combatant has reached the ground. Kick-boxing is often practiced for general fitness, or as a full-contact sport. In the full-contact sport the male boxers are bare-chested wearing shorts and protective gear including: mouth-guard, hand-wraps, 10oz boxing gloves, groin-guard, shin-pads, kick-boots, and optional protective helmet (usually for those under 18.) The female boxers will wear a tank top and chest protection in addition to the male clothing/protective gear.
VolleyballVolleyball at the University is growing rapidly, and can cater for players of all levels.
Players wishing to compete can do so on a number of levels. We currently have mens’ and womens’ teams competing in the BUCS (British University and College) leagues and cup, as well as further opportunity to play in local league competition within the Volleyball England club structure.
Water PoloWater Polo is one of the universities newest clubs. Water Polo is a team game played in a pool involving six out players and one goal keeper. It is a fast pace sport which demands a lot of physical performance. The club train and partake in joint performance based sessions with the universities swimming club. There are also many opportunities within water polo to compete for the university in various competitions.

Sub AquaSunderland Scuba Centre normally offer the PADI Open Water course for around £195. However, with financial assistance from both the Centre and Sunderland University, the cost to you as a University of Sunderland student is only £75!
SwimmingThe University of Sunderland Swimming Club welcomes members of all standards and abilities. Whether you are a keen casual weekly warrior, or are aiming for the top, we have something for you.
Table TennisWhether you are a beginner or have been playing for years, the Sunderland Table Tennis Club is for you. The club provides a friendly atmosphere where people can socialise and, if they wish, or be part of one of the BUCS teams which represent the University on a Wednesday afternoon.
TennisThe Tennis Club has a wide range of players, from those playing competitively in BUCS to recreational players and complete beginners. The majority of our university tennis programme takes place at the Sunderland Tennis Centre, which has eight indoor courts and ten outdoor floodlit courts. We have LTA licensed coach Matt Wigham to help with all levels of training and coaching, and offer a wide range of activities for all playing standards. Opportunities are available to volunteer with coaching, mentoring through internships,working with outreach and local community groups, schools, PR/marketing and more!

Development Athlete BursaryAvailable to National and Regional Standard Athletes
- Up to £500 worth of funding and support - Main package as above- Additional support and liaison with coach- Development Planning Assistance- CitySpace membership
The Institute of Sport has a unique partnership with PUMA, with every elite athlete is given a set sports apparel.
ELITE ATHLETE SCHEMEThe University is continuing its development of services that it can offer to elite athletes during their time at the university. As part of this commitment, the Institute of Sport has implemented and grown the Elite Athlete Support Scheme to assist athletes performing at an advanced level whilst studying at University.
The scheme is open to any student studying on an official University of Sunderland course (including those who are enrolled on a University course at a local college).
Past scheme members have included everyone from Olympic rowers, world champion martial artists, commonwealth gymnasts, county cricket players, European athletic competitors, and six nations rugby champions. The university’s CitySpace building was one of the region’s 2012 Olympic training camp venues, this allowed current and potential world performers to meet .
