This June we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and we thank her for her unflinching dedication and 60 years of loyal

service to the nation.

I was a post war baby boomer, born in 1948 and my earliest memories are of the excitement of her coronation. My generation, more than any other, owe a great debt of gratitude to our parents, the Queen’s generation, not only for standing up to Hitler and the Axis powers but also for paying for the war over the following twenty five years. They sowed the seeds of our economic recovery and current prosperity.

When I left the Army in 1978, to join John D Wood & Co., I was recently married and had bought our first house in Kensington. As a Captain I earned £5,300 pa and purchased a house for £30,000, circa 6 times my salary. Although I sold that property in 1984, it is now conservatively worth £1.8m. Currently a Captain

earns circa £45,000 pa. The value of my old house is now some 40 times his salary! There is no way, based on his

earnings, that he can possibly buy a similar property in Kensington today without help.

We, as a generation, over the last 40 years have benefited from a ‘windfall profit’ in the value of our

homes, many of which we regard as our pension pot, but we also have a duty to help the next generation. Property

has certainly been an excellent hedge against inflation and a sound investment.

Many of our clients, like me, are planning for the future. I have recently helped one downsize in London, selling a family house which I sold them in the 1980’s, replacing it with a more suitable property, half the size, half the price and more useable for their latter years, with a ground floor bedroom and an en suite bathroom, leading out to a garden. In turn we have successfully negotiated the purchase of a house for each of their children to get them started on the property ladder.

Provided at least one of the parents survives for seven years and the property is freely given then they will have successfully passed over a significant amount of their capital, free of inheritance tax, to the next generation.

In addition, as one retires and starts to live off capital and pensions, running a large property, especially one with grounds, is expensive. I believe one should make the move whilst relatively fit and certainly before turning 70. Moving house, whatever your age, is highly stressful so it is best accomplished whilst one is sound in body and mind and, importantly have the energy.

as part of her Jubilee tour.

The Diamond Jubilee commemorates 60 years of the Queen’s reign. The Queen is the only British Monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee, other than Queen Victoria in 1897. She acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952, and her official coronation took place in the following year on the 2 June 1953.

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, there is a four-day Jubilee weekend. The traditional Whitsun May bank holiday is moving to 4 June and there is an additional bank holiday on 5 June.

John Daniel Wood founded our company in 1872 during the reign of Queen Victoria. The estate agency flourished and has continued to do for the past 140 years bringing us full circle to the present Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Year.
