Titanium 2003: Conference

Referral Program ITA Members may view inquiries received by the Association each week by clicking on the referral report found on the “Members Only” section of the ITA website. Need a password—call or email Stacey Jorgensen at [email protected].

Titanium 2003: General Session The general session provides a business/technical forum for discussion which integrates all aspects of the expanding titanium industry. This year’s conference will address material developments in the titanium marketplace, applications and technology, and will be comprised of speakers on the forefront of the industry. Panels include:

World Titanium Industry Trends The World Trends panel provides an executive market survey from some of the leading producers in the industry. Panel speakers include: Timothy G. Rupert, President & CEO of RTI International Metals Inc., J. Landis Martin, Chairman & CEO of TIMET, and Thomas E. Williams Jr., President of Allvac, an Allegheny Technologies Company.

Corrosion/Marine Applications & Chemical Processing

Why are marine engineers turning to titanium for corrosion resistance? It helps ships come in with lower costs and better performance. Titanium is the ultimate solution to the problems that traditionally plague seawater tubing and piping. Titanium’s natural corrosion resistance can give virtually unlimited lifespan to chemical processing plants in equipment subject to aggressive acids, salt solutions, alkalis and waters. This panel of leading experts will present vital information for all professionals dedicated to corrosion research.

Consumer Products

From automotive exhaust systems and springs to architectural applications, to titanium jewelry and art. The use of titanium in major consumer markets has risen dramatically over the past decade and continues to grow at a substantial rate. This panel will discuss new emerging markets in consumer products using titanium.

Medical Applications Titanium’s biocompatibility with the human body is head and shoulders above other materials. Because titanium is absolutely inert in the human body, immune to attack from bodily fluids, compatible with bone growth, and strong and flexible, titanium is the most biocompatible of all metals. With the significant benefits titanium offers patients, surgeons and engineers, the use of titanium will play a key role in future medical applications. This panel will examine some of the most current technologies in the titanium medical applications field.

Call for Papers Extended

ITA has extended the “Call For Papers” date until March 31, 2003. Promote your knowledge by presenting a paper at the upcoming 19th Annual Titanium Conference on October 12-14, 2003 in Monterey, California.

Topics Needed include: Aerospace Chemical Processing Consumer Products Emerging Technologies Distribution Industrial Applications Corrosion/Marine Medical Military Recycling Welding Other

Titanium Achievement Awards

Attention ITA Members:

Now is the time to start thinking about nominations for consideration for the 2003 Titanium Achievement Award. Nomination forms can be found on the ITA website at www.titanium.org. Click on the conference icon and select Titanium Achievement Award icon.

Aerospace & Military Applications When the titanium industry was first established in the early 1950s it was as a result of the recognition by the military, in both the West and former Soviet Union, that higher performance engines and airframes necessitated use of this higher strength to density metal. This posi-tion has not changed. Titanium use has increased with every generation of military aircraft. This panel of ex-perts will provide an overview of titanium usage in military and commercial airline applications. Other panels include: Distribution, Recycling, Emerg-ing Technologies, Industrial Applications, and Welding.

Did You Know? Fisherman's Wharf is simply footsteps away from the Doubletree Hotel. Today the old warehouses and fish-packing sheds house small shops, clam chowder joints, and elegant restaurants. The Wharf's end is an embark-ing point for fishing charters, whale watching boats, shopping, and sightseeing craft.

9th Annual Golf Classic: The 9th Annual Golf Classic will begin at 8:30 am at the Bayonet Course of the Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course on Sunday, October 12, 2003. The cost per golfer is $165 and includes: greens fees, lunch, and transportation. This event is limited to the first 100 golfers and is handled on a first come first serve. For detailed information on golf please visit the golf section of the ITA website at www.titanium.org.

CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES Sightseeing Tour Options: Two sightseeing tours will be offered at the Conference & Exhibition. Take time to discover Monterey .

Carmel Valley Wine Tasting On Sunday, October 12th and Wednesday, October 15th sign up for the Carmel Valley Wine Tasting. Monterey County now has more vineyard acres planted than Napa County, which means more Monterey County wines to try. Sample the award winning wines of the Central Coast and visit the tasting rooms of some of the most popular local winemakers including Chateau Julien, Ventana Vineyards, Durney, and Bernardus.

Cannery Row / 17 Mile Drive / Carmel Tour Monday, October 13th sign up for the Cannery Row, 17 Mile Drive and Carmel tour. Begin on Cannery Row and continue to the Pacific Grove (Butterfly Town USA) coastline and onto the 17 Mile Drive. You will visit Bird Rock, home to many shoreline birds as well as offshore herds of sea lions, leopard seals, and harbor seals. The tour will then continue into Carmel, going first to the Carmel Mission Basilica. After touring the Mission, you will continue into Carmel-by-the-Sea, a quaint European-like village in which you may have time to explore on your own. For costs and detailed information on the available tours please visit the sightseeing tour section of the ITA website at www.titanium.org. All tours are handled as a first come first serve basis.

Reserve Private Meeting Space In Monterey The number one reason people come to the conference and exhibition is for the networking and business opportunities. As a result, meeting space is at a premium. To assist our attendees in maximizing their opportunities, ITA announces private meeting space which is available by contacting the Doubletree Hotel. These rooms are

ideal for companies looking for a secluded place, where they can create a corporate identity in which to entertain or meet with clients in a completely private and self-contained environment. For more information on reserving a private meeting room, contact Stacey Jorgensen at [email protected] or call (303) 404-9400.

Technical Discussion Forum Just when you thought the ITA web site couldn’t get any better, you discovered the ITA Technical Discussion Forum. The Technical Discussion Forum is an excellent opportunity to educate the general public on titanium. This Forum allows individuals to post questions or seek advice on applications involved with titanium.

The openness and transparency of technical information benefits industry at large, a public forum such as this will only be successful if individuals respond to the posted questions. ITA relies on membership to actively participate in assisting with technical questions.

Technical Discussion Forum Automotive:

Just wondering if titanium could be used as a piston liner in automotive engine? The engine is turbocharged so will operate at quite high temp. The liners seat in a cast block and will have water around them to help cooling of the pistons etc. The liners will also be touching each other when seated in the block. Will there be a problem with such an application? Can anyone shed some light on whether the piston rings will seal ok etc?
