Minato City Through Ukiyo-e

Ukiyo-e, commonly referred to in English as “woodblock prints of the floating world,” was a popular form of printed art in Japan during the Edo period, from roughly the 17th to 19th centuries. Usually, ukiyo-e art depicted scenes from the everyday life of

Japanese people at the time, with a particular focus on fashion, entertainment and pleasure. In this series, we would like to share some sights from the area of the current Minato City as it was depicted through ukiyo-e at the time.

The above ukiyo-e paintings are owned by the Minato Local History Museum

View of Edo Takanawa (Eisen, 1830-1842) Streets along the Takanawa shore were famous for their beautiful views and were always crowded with many locals and tourists since the 1600s. The setting of this ukiyo-e illustrates the current Japan National Route 15 where we can now see many tall buildings lined up side-by-side.

Thirty-six Views of Eastern Capital: Takanawa Shore (Hiroshige Utagawa II, 1862) The area of Takanawa 2-chome, around Sengakuji station, used to be called “Takanawa Cow Town” as there were many sheds that held cows. The livestock were important in people’s everyday to help carry heavy loads to distant places.
