Minato City Volunteer Guide Walking Tour, September 24, 2016 Local Discoveries in Azabujuban: MINATO CITY VOLUNTEER GUIDED WALKING TOUR Historical overview The tour began with an overview of the history of Azabujuban. Azabu literally means "hemp cloth," and the name is said to derive from the fact that the area was historically a major hemp cultivation point. Volunteer guides explained that since Azabujuban was a temple town leading to the Zenpuku-ji Temple, the area has been filled with various stores for centuries, making it a lively and bustling shopping area. The tour participants were introduced to Juban Inari Shrine and Zenpuku-ji Temple at the beginning and end of the tour, where they learned differences between shrines and temples. Traditional confectionery and popular shops Azabujuban boasts numerous stores that were established in the area over a hundred years ago, as well as various fashionable and unique boutiques. The tour visited 11 of these stores, which were carefully selected by Minato City Volunteer Guide with the aim to introduce their long history. Azabujuban is especially famous for its confectionery stores. The tour included a visit to a local taiyaki , or a fish-shaped pastry, store. Participants observed the traditional method of baking taiyaki and found out that the store master bakes an average of 1,000 pastries each day. They also discovered that the taiyaki is in shape of a sea bream, which is considered a special fish in Japan. The tour also visited several unique stores in the area. One of them was a tenugui, hand towel, shop. Tenugui has been used in Japanese history as not only towels, but bandages, diapers, shoelaces and even maternity belts. The tour was a delightful experience for all participants, who said that they learned and discovered many new things about the city. "I live and work here, but I don't have time to explore much," said one participant from Austria, who has lived in Japan for four years. "Today I discovered many new places." Another participant from Australia said she returned to many of the stores visited during the tour to purchase souvenirs for her friends and family back home. Please join us the next time. Minato City Through Ukiyo-eUkiyo-e, commonly referred to in English as “woodblock prints of the floating world,” was a popular form of printed art in Japan during the Edo period, from roughly the 17th to 19th centuries. Usually, ukiyo-e art depicted scenes from the everyday life of Japanese people at the time, with a particular focus on fashion, entertainment and pleasure. In this series, we would like to share some sights from the area of the current Minato City as it was depicted through ukiyo-e at the time.

Bijin-ga, literally meaning ”beautiful woman picture,” is one of the most famous and popular genres among ukiyo-e art. Although it varies depending on the painter and the time period of production, generally the women are depicted with long-slitted eyes and puffed-up jaws. Such facial features had long been considered ideal for Japanese women.

The above ukiyo-e paintings are owned by the Minato Local History Museum

“One Hundred Beautiful Women at Famous Places in Edo: Furukawa River” (Toyokuni Utagawa, 1858) A teahouse by the Furukawa river is depicted within the small picture on the top right. The same type of teahouse is also depicted in “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Furukawa River at Hiroo.”

“View of Akabane” (Shunso Utagawa, 1847)You can see the five story pagoda at Zojo-ji temple behind the beautiful woman.

Missive to Dentsu-in by Kanchi Kokushi Tenko-in temple, 1-3-16 Shibakoen

Archived at Tenko-in, this missive is a personal correspondence from the 12th chief priest of Zojo-ji temple Kanchi Kokushi, commonly known as Genyo Zonno Genyo to Dentsu-in, known as Seiyo Kakuzan, dated March 3, 1618, and it is thought to be written by Kanchi Kokushi himself.

It is 33.1cm H x 52.2 cm W, and is an origami-style missive. Following insects-inflicted damages on the paper, the missive was preserved on a scroll, a proof that it was recognized as a valuable document since ancient times. This document is highly regarded, as it reflects the rela-tionship between Kanchi Kokushi and Kakuzan, a powerful leader at the time acknowledged by the shogunate.
