Know Your Audience4

Who is your user?

What equipment and software is available to the user?

What actions does the user need to take during or after using the product?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Who is your user? Internally, we have a good idea who the end user will be. whether its instructions to field staff or age based questionnaires. Millennials are comfortable with digital products, whereas the elderly may not be. The NHATS study, on aging health, the elderly participants may have never acquired the digital taste or have recently given up their computing. What equipment and software is available? Designate the device. Know the hardware. Does the user only need a device to read something, or will there be some sort of interactivity involved such as filling out forms or recording data. (Some Field staff use tablets or laptops for this purpose) This goes right into what actions will the user take. Do forms need to be filled out and returned Are we collecting data Is video interaction needed to convey instructions or keep the users attention Is the publication a resource to do their job more effectively Will it be used it as a presentation piece Knowing your audience will help figure out what end product will best fill your needs.

Knowing your audience will help figure out what end product will best fill your needs. Lets do a comparison of the 2 most popular digital publications, PDFs and eBooks The big item for PDF is fillable forms. A great way to gather data. PDFs are an industry standard, everyone is familiar with PDFs, and it is becoming more and more common to have just a PDF deliverable. Similarities of both: Great thing about eBooks, the responsive layout and interface. This makes them more device friendly. The user can customize the file to suit their own needs, such as making the text larger. Speaking of text, an eBook is much better for users when reading large amounts of text.

Engage Users with Rich Media6

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Sometimes, you will want to use Rich Media in your publication. What is rich media? It’s video, audio, simple animations. Its another way to make your content easier to digest. This is a sample of a community outreach PDF we created for the Eagle Books project. It features - in page navigation as well as bookmarks Rich media such as video/audio Utilizes a fixed layout – so you know exactly how it will be viewed by everyone [show off eagle books pdf]

Focus on Relevant Content7

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Another Interactive PDF we created is the Safer Self Assessment, part of the online companion Safer Toolkit The main thing here is keeping the user FOCUSed on the information pertaining to this particular document. You want maintain the users attention and provide links to any references or additional information the user may need. This helps from keeping the file bogged down with repeated or even distracting information. This PDF is Highly navigable, it has in page navigation, a drop down menu as well as bookmarks This is a fixed layout – gives us control over the look and feel of the document It has Internal and external links, helping keeping the focus on the documents intended purpose Its also 508 compliant This particular PDF is used for gathering information, so it has a lot of fillable fields. Some of these will also populate other fields automatically throughout the document. The document is supposed to be used by a group of individuals working together, so it can be saved and passed back and forth multiple times.

Make Accessible, User-Centric Products8

Presenter
Presentation Notes
What we mean by this, is that you can use responsive design to make you document customizable by the end user. The end user can change the look and feel of your publication if it is not in a fixed-layout. The user can customize their experience by easily changing the font, changing the font size, changing the brightness, and even rotating their view. All this affects the layout, so it will need to be responsive. This image is sample of an ePub on Android Playbooks. This is relatively the same as iBooks on the iPad. This is where documents with large text shine. Not only is it less intimidating, but it is Easier for note taking User can add personal bookmarks Highlight text, annotate, Easily do a word or phrase search
