The community has come out in full force supporting Mountain Rise station commander Brigadier

Francis Bantham after she publically rep-rimanded a policeman under her command for allegedly using police resources to deal with a private business dispute.

The policeman, Constable Anesh Chathu, claims Brigadier Bantham publicly rep-rimanded him following a dispute at his home concerning personal business mat-ters. He then went and charged her for cri-men injuria.

It is understood that a group of men arrived at Constable Chathus home demanding he pay up debts that he and his wife had run up in the private business that they ran together. Chathu then alleg-edly called police colleagues to come to his assistance.

It appears Brigadier Bantham heard about the issue and arrived at Chathus home with another policeman. She alleg-edly berated Chathu on the street for using his colleagues to sort out his affairs. This apparently prompted Chathu to lay charges of crimen injuria and intimidation against

    Brigadier Bantham.Brigadier Bantham laid counter-charges

against Chathu, saying he referred to her as uncouth during the incident outside his house.

Local community leaders have come out

in full support of Brigadier Bantham say-ing that she was within her rights as sta-tion commander to reprimand an offi cer for bringing the station into disrepute.

Community comes out in support of non-nonsense Bantham

No police offi cer should get special treatment. If it was a personal issue then the police offi cer certainly cannot get any special treatment. He knows the procedure perfectly well and he should follow it. Everybody must follow proce-dure and call 10111 regardless of their position, said Jug-mohan.

Piet Jugmohan Chairman of the local community police forum

Police must follow the same procedures we civilians do - phone 10111. No-one should abuse state resources by phon-ing colleagues to get preferential treatment. To the best of my knowledge, state employees should not directly own any business as it can create a confl ict of interests, said Gayadin.

Sunny Gayadin National Union of Resident and Ratepayers Associations

The misuse of police resources cannot be tolerated.Brigadier Bantham must be commended for doing her duties.

More women in management positions must go out and take charge. Police offi cers must follow protocol and not think that the station is at their beck and call, said Singh.

We ratepayers are keen to know what Mike Tarr did during his term as mayor. Cllr Chetty fought for the indigent and poor ratepayers, including other issues.

The speaker Cllr Babu Baijoo mentions he does not get feed back from offi cials includ-ing elected councillors. How can this Munici-pality be said to run in a transparent manner?

We rate payers are satisfi ed with the pre-sent meter readers. Manager Nkosi brought his suggestion for us to pay R2 500 to install meter reading. Msunduzi Ratepayers Forum, Midlands Hindu Society, Mr. Smith and his followers, and Cllr Chetty strongly opposed it.

    Ratepayer chides Council

We are very pleased that Brigadier Ban-tham has put her foot down on police offi cers abusing the services by spend-ing working time to assist their colleagues in resolving their per-

sonal problems. Police should not be running their own busi-ness, they should give their undi-vided time to the community and be proud of a job well done. Well done Brigadier Bantham.

    Krish Naidoo, Northdale

The police offi cer that had to get police backing from Mountain Rise police need to be suspended and an enquiry into their private business to be probed. We are asking for police to be more vigilant and their presence in high crime areas will give awareness whereby criminals will b driven away merely by their presence.

I commend Brigadier Ban-tham for standing her ground rep-rimanding the police offi cer that used the police back up to assist him to defuse his personal busi-ness problem at his home, tak-

ing up the time that offi cers on duty could have utilized to attend to crime calls. We need police back up to apprehend criminals at most times there are no vans, and criminals make off after hold-ups or house break-ing incidents. Police offi cers should not

be allowed to have any business interests whatsoever as they are state employees.

Brigadier Bantham has made some excellent changes at the SAP Mountain Rise and we the public value and support her.

    Roshan Singh, Raisethorpe

    Well done Brigadier Bantham

We support you BrigadierCartoonist Shapiro has ruffl ed many feathers within the Hindu frater-

nity with his Sunday Times Zapiro cartoon of the deity Lord Gane-sha with a cricket bat and money in his hands while the cricket SA chief executive Haroon Lorgat is tied and ready to be stabbed by cricket SA offi cials as a sacrifi ce.

He wanted to highlight the strong-arm, bullying tactics used by the Board For Control of Cricket In India (BCCI).

While many agree that Cricket SA have been pushed into a cor-ner by the Indian cricket board, a compromise by Cricket SA was inevitable as Cricket SA would lose millions in television and

advertising rights that had already been sold if the tour were to be cancelled.

Shapiro, an award winning car-toonist, could have conceptualised other images to make his point.

This is a despicable act of reli-gious intolerance. Denigrating any religion can never be construed as a form of personal expression. Freedom of speech is enshrined in our constitution but the right to draw and say things must be exer-cised responsibly.

A challenge is extended to Jon-athan Shapiro to unreservedly apologise to the Hindu commu-nity.

    Vijay Surujpal, Phoenix

Is this cartoon a publicity stunt by Shapiro?

Cartoonist Zapiro showed a total disrespect to Hindu society by using Lord Ganesha to gain popularity for the Sunday Times.

I totally agree with the various members and leaders of the Hindu community about boycotting the Sun-day Times, pending an unconditional apology from him.

The Pietermaritzburg business community is very upset with Msun-duzis new electricity charges approved at a special full City Council meeting on Tuesday this week.

Commercial users will pay increased basic MCB charges of up to 1200%.

Chairperson of Pietermaritz-burg Chamber of Business (PCB), Paris Dlamini, accused the council of punishing the business sector for complaining to the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) regarding the councils 10% elec-tricity tariff increase.

Basic domestic MCB charges are going up 70%. Higher end domestic MCB charges are also going up by between 30% and 55%.

South African National Civic Organisation, spokes-man Dumisani Mthalane said

the council should have kept its increase at 7%, inclusive of both MCB and basic charges, as requested by NERSA.

While it has accepted the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) 7% tariff increase ceil-ing, the Msunduzi City Council at a special full council meeting on Tuesday this week sought to bal-ance the books by increasing other electricity-related charges, par-ticularly for higher usage domestic and commercial customers.

These measures are to offset the budget shortfall created by the Council working on a 10% tariff increase for the 2013/2014 budget, as opposed to the 7% increase approved by NERSA.

Municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi said the aim was to adjust downwards and that the R200 basic charge was still less than the NERSA-approved ceiling of R245.80.

The basic monthly electricity charge paid by all consumers of R17 introduced by Council last year has been increased to R200.

Basic charge for a standard domestic miniature circuit breaker (MCB) increased by 70%.

Basic charge for a domestic 80 Amp circuit breaker up by 55% (from R17.50 to R27).

Basic charge for a domestic 100 Amp circuit breaker up by 30% (from R29.16 to R37).

Basic charge for a Commercial 80 Amp circuit breaker up by 1200% (from R49.22 to R661.35).

Basic charge for a Commercial 3-phase supply up 900% (from R86.14 to R861.80)

During the past few months award win-ning members of the SAPS Pietermaritzburg Detec-tive Services have been responsi-ble for the successful conviction of fi fteen men who have been sen-tenced to a combined total of 189 years behind bars.

The detectives were rewarded for their outstanding achievement at the recent awards ceremony held at the SAPS KwaZulu-Natal headquarters in Durban.

SAPS Pietermaritzburg Police Station Commander, Brigadier Johan Reynders, received an award for the best Crime Investi-gation station at Brigadier level in the KwaZulu-Natal.

During the past month alone, between September and October, the Pietermaritzburg detectives have successfully secured convic-tions for 11 accused, six of which are awaiting sentencing. The other fi ve are serving their time behind

These convictions and sen-tences were secured through the dedication and hard work of the members who effectively inves-tigated these crimes. The mem-bers will continue with their good work to make sure that all sus-

pects who disobey the law are brought to book to face the con-sequences of their selfi sh actions and therefore making our prov-ince safer, said Provincial Com-missioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

According to a report released by the Med-ical Research Council (MRC) in July 2007: Between 1997-2004 in SA, 195 people a day

    died due to some form of heart and blood vessel dis-ease (cardiovascular disease);

About 33 people a day die due to heart attacks; About 60 people a day die due to strokes; The highest rates of heart and blood vessel dis-

ease in SA are found in the Indian community, fol-

lowed by the coloured community, and thereafter the black and white communities having similar rates.

These statistics are shocking, but a highly effec-tive, natural remedy, Artery Unblock, was introduced to South Africa about two and a half years ago. In this short period, hundreds of people have benefi tted, with some even totally avoiding a by-pass.

Oregan Hoskins has been president of the South African Rugby Union since 2006 and was elected to the second highest position in world rugby in December 2011 when he was appointed vice-chairperson of the International Rugby Board. He has brought distinction to himself through his competent administration of the offi ce of the president. His administration has received wide-spread recognition.

Hoskins was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg where he played rugby as a lock before training to become a teacher. In 1991 he pursued a career in law whereupon he founded his own practice, Hoskins and Ncgobo, before moving to a corporate law com-pany in Durban to specialise in conveyancing and sports law. He was an active member of the Black Lawyers Association (of which he was president in Pietermaritzburg) and served on the Council of the KwaZulu Natal Law Society as a vice-president.

Hoskins played his rugby for Young Lions Rugby Club and he is presently a member of the KZN

Rugby Veterans Association. He is also a former president of the Natal Rugby Union and was the chairperson of the board of Sharks (Pty) Limited. Before his election as SARU president he was a member of the judicial committee and also managed the Springbok Sevens rugby team.

One of Hoskins key policies has been an increase in the rate of racial integra-tion of South African blacks into the South African national team and the Super Rugby competition. In his term as SARU president the organisation won both the Rugby World Cup (2007) and the IRB World Sevens Series (2009) as well as age group world titles.

Hoskins has demonstrated a profound understanding of the diffi culties encoun-tered in the world of sports and has always fought bigotry with zest, courage and imagination. The South African Rugby Union has been streamlined from com-mercial and amateur entities into a single operating structure and, after several years of turbulence around the turn and start of the century, has been stabilised as argua-bly South Africas most effectively gov-erned sports federation. Hoskins, a warm, sincere person, has our deep respect and admiration.

Hoskins will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sports Veterans Association in grate-ful recognition of his dedicated contribu-tion to the promotion of sport within and beyond the Pietermaritzburg community. This will be formalised at the organisa-tions awards presentation function on Sat-urday 22 March 2014 at the Truro Hall.

The local PSL outfi t, Mar-itzburg United will be back at home when they take on Platinum Stars on Friday night, at 8 pm at Harry Gwala Sta-

dium. Last Sunday the Team Of

Choice travelled to Kaizer Seboth-elo Stadium in the Free State and played a goaless draw against

Bloemfontein Celtic. An away trip against Celtic

was always going to be a tough and a tricky one for the Team Of Choice.

It must be remembered that the current United head coach, Clin-ton Larsen, was employed by Celtic just a couple of weeks ago. Also Celtics coach, Ernst Mid-dendorp was previously in charge of the Maritzburg side.

During the Celtics match, the Team Of Choice goalkeeper and

vice captain Shu-Aib Walters had an outstanding game He sin-gly saved United from losing the game.

After the game Larsen agreed that he was the best man on the pitch.

I thought Walters had a excel-lent game and really came to the party, said Larsen.

Tomorrows game is likely to attract a full house for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the local fans want to be

convinced that Larsen is comfort-ably settling down.

Secondly, it is an open secret that the former Manning Rangers and Orlando Pirates midfi elder is popular and liked by Uniteds die-hards.

Against the visitors, Uniteds strikers will have to be sharp in front of the goals, Walters cant always be the only player sweat-ing blood and being a life saver.
