State Flag Comparison

Factoid: Each of the fifty United States has its own unique flag.

Directions: Look at the picture of the fifty state flags to answer the following questions.

1. Write a fraction that represents the number of state flags that contain stars.

2. Write a fraction that represents the number of flags contain the color blue.

3. Write a fraction that represents the number of flags contain a person.

4. Write a fraction that represents the number of flags contain more than three colors.

5. Write a fraction that represents the number of flags that have the state name listed somewhere on the flag.

6. Create a fraction for a characteristic of your choice. Write the fraction and characteristic below.

7. Write a number sentence that compares the fractions for flags with stars to the flags that contain the color blue.

8. Write a number sentence that compares the fractions for flags with state names to flags with more than three colors.

9. Write a number sentence that compares the fractions for the flags with the following three characteristics: color blue, stars, and state names.

10. Order all of the above fractions from least to greatest.

How-To Video on Comparing and Ordering Fractions

You are now the teacher! Your task is to make a how-to video that teaches your fellow classmates how to compare and/or order fractions.

To begin, create a script for your video that outlines the steps a fourth grader needs to complete in order to compare and/or order fractions. Your script should include specific procedures and visuals that explain the process.

Once your script is drafted, find a peer to help you review your work. Sit across from your classmate and read the steps aloud. Your classmate should follow the steps as presented. If your classmate has to ask a clarifying question, your step is not clear. Revise your directions to make them clear. Continue revising until your directions are clear and precise.

Using Educreations or a similar app on an iPad record your presentation. With your teacher, arrange a time to share your presentation with classmates.

Grid Art

Materials Needed: Centimeter Paper Crayons or colored pencils (4 colors) Pencil and lined paper

Using a pencil, map out a design on centimeter paper, creating a multiplication array (therefore your design must be a square or a rectangle).

On a separate piece of paper, write the equations for the area and perimeter of your design. Then, color your array to create a design using four colors.

Once your design is complete, write a fraction to represent the part of the whole (hint: the whole is the area of the array) for each color in the array.

Using fractions, write as many number sentences as possible to compare the colors (example: yellow compared to green).

Order the fractions for each color from greatest to least.

Sea Organism Math Project

Factoid: One place to find ghost crabs in Florida is on Shell Island, an undeveloped island between the Gulf of Mexico and Saint Andrews Bay. It is totally uninhabited by humans and only accessible by boat. The island and surrounding waters support hundreds of marine dependent species.

The following is a list of species found on or around Shell Island: starfish, sea hare, jellyfish, horseshoe crab, pelican, sand pipers, snowy plovers, stone crab.

Directions: Create a data collection sheet you can display in the classroom so that your classmates can quickly and independently vote on their favorite marine animal. If you do not know one or more of the above animals, you may need to do a little research so you can provide your classmates with information and/or pictures.

Summarize the data for the animals by using fractions with denominators that represent the number of students voting.

Write and answer at least five questions that involve either combining or comparing the data. Your number sentences should use fractions. Example: How much more of the class voted for pelicans than voted for starfish? 5/25 pelicans – 4/25 starfish = 1/25 more pelicans

Favorite Recipe Project

Look up or bring from home a favorite recipe. Pretend you need to make three batches of your recipe for a party. Using repeated addition, compute the new amount needed for each ingredient. Record your calculations on a piece of lined paper using labels. Be sure to convert all improper fractions to mixed numbers. Then, estimate the total amount needed for each ingredient and create a shopping list.

Birthday Party Food Problem Solving

1. Taylor and Amro celebrated their birthdays at the same party. They each had their own birthday cake. Each cake was the same size. After the party, 1/2 of Taylor’s cake was left. There was 5/12of Amro’s cake left. Which cake had more left? Explain your reasoning.

2. Taylor and Amro decided to share a pizza during their party. Taylor ate 3/6 and Amro ate 2/6 of the pizza. How much of the pizza did they eat together? Show how you found your answer.

3. There are 4 and 1/8 pizzas left over from the birthday party. After Taylor and Amro gave some pizza to their friends, there were 2 and 4/8 pizzas left. Taylor thinks they gave 1 and 3/8 pizzas to friends. Do you agree with Taylor? Explain why you agree or disagree. Use equations or fraction models to support your explanation.

Joe’s Place Menu Math

Convert all the prices on the menu to decimals. Then order lunch for you and a friend. Calculate the total cost for the lunch. Who’s lunch cost more and by how much? How much change would you receive if you paid with a $50 bill?

Speedway Number Line

Factoid: The Texas World Speedway is one of seven super speedways with tracks longer than two miles in the United States. At the Texas World Speedway there are at least 11 different courses: a 1-mile road course, a 1.5-mile oval, a 1.8-mile road course, two 1.9-mile road courses, a 2-mile high banked oval, a 2.8-mile road course, a 2.9-mile road course, a 3-mile road course, a 3.1-mile road course, and the Foyt Test road course.

Directions: Research different car racetracks in the United States. Create a poster with a number line showing the distances around at least six of the tracks. Label your number line with fractions and decimals. See the example below for guidance.

Baseball Recruiter

Research three Major League Baseball players. Look up each player’s batting average (AVG), on base percentage (OBP), and slugging percentage (SLG).

Your task is to decide which player would be the best recruit and why. To do this, compare their statistics and construct an argument using data to support your choice.
