I hope you all took some time to relax, spend time with fam- ily and recharge your batteries for another demanding school year. Your PSADA Executive Council and Executive Director have been busy this summer planning for the 47th annual confer- ence, attending NIAAA section 2 meetings in West Vir- ginia, administering the CAA exam and conducting golf outings to benefit the PSADA Foundation and scholar- ships for our student-athletes. Your Executive Council is truly a hardworking, dedi- cated group of leaders. They give a lot of their time and talents to help PSADA and make us the best organiza- tion of Athletic Administrators in the country. I would like to thank Jon Vallina and Jack Fullen for once again hosting the PSADA Foundation Western Golf Outing. They have been conducting a PSADA golf outing every year since 2003 and have raised over $41,000 for our student-athlete scholarships; what a great example of hard work and leadership for all of us. I would like to also like to congratulate Jon on his retirement as Athletic Director at Burgettstown High School, some- one will succeed Jon, but no one will replace him. two readings. Stay tuned for more information and how PSADA and ASEP will help you with this new program.

I had the opportunity this summer to attend the 150th anniversary and reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg. Over 14,000 reenactors arrived from all over the country including 16 different countries. Watching these people portray the life of the Civil War soldier in that wars greatest battle for those 3 days was truly inspiring. I also fulfilled a life-long dream by walking the beaches of Normandy, France. Seeing those hallowed beaches and visiting the largest of the 12 American cemeteries are truly life changing events. We can truly learn many leadership lessons from these 2 events that changed the course of history for all of us. The first one that I think of is the sacrifice that these young men and women made for the cause they believed in. They were willing to lay down their life for others. The messages that Generals Lee, Meade, Eisenhower, Montgomery and others sent truly must have been inspiring to these young people.

Imagine being about 17-18 years old, thousands of miles from home, cold, tired, hungry, facing insur-mountable odds and knowing you probably will never see your family again. I know why those young people at Normandy are referred to as the Greatest Genera-

“President’s Message” continued from previous page

tion. The second lesson is that the outcomes of these 2 great battles were determined by the decisions that were made by those famous Generals. Had Robert E. lee listened to his fellow Generals and sought input from his staff, instead of ignoring their advice, the outcome would have been different. General Meade sought the advice of others and listened to his col-leagues and developed a consensus ensuring a Union victory. Hitler too refused to listen to his Generals and failed to believe the Allies were landing at Normandy. He thought it was a diversion and that General George Patton would lead the real invasion at Calais.

Too often we as leaders ignore those around us and fail to heed the advice of those who know more and can help us. A leader must listen. I could mention many more examples of leadership lessons that these battles taught us, instead I would recommend the best book I have read on leadership. It is titled “Sacred Ground, Leadership Lessons From Gettysburg and The Little Bighorn” by Jeff Appelquist. As the Athletic Direc-tor at your school you are charged with being a leader. I urge you to continually learn and grow your leader-ship skills. Your coaches, parents, administration and student-athletes rely on you to lead them, don’t let them down. Wishing you the best for 2013–14.

and Gerry Schwille, pSADA president

One of the major ini-tiatives that was unani-mously approved by the Delegate Assembly and PSADA Executive Council

in March in Hershey was a mandate for a coaching ed-ucation requirement to include concussion care, sud-den cardiac arrest, sport first aid and coaching prin-ciples for all coaches.

As a follow-up to this charge, Bob Buckanavage, PSADA Executive Director and Gerry Schwille, Coach-ing Education Chairman arranged for a meeting with

Dr. Robert Lombardi and Mr. Mark Byers on Thursday, June 6, 2013 to present a proposal for a coaching edu-cation requirement in Pennsylvania.

The great news is that the PIAA Leadership fully endorsed and supported the proposal and agreed to place it on the agenda for the PIAA Summer workshops with athletic directors and coaches.

The most encouraging news is that both the coach-es and athletic directors committees unanimously

endorsed a coaching education requirement for all coaches. Gerry Schwille attended both of these com-mittee meetings and reported that he was extremely impressed with the positive response and support from the coaches especially.

During the July 24, 2013 PIAA Board of Directors meeting, the PIAA and PSADA Coaching Education re-quirement was approved on a first reading basis. This is a major step in the right direction because forty-eight (48) states have a coaching requirement and Pennsylvania will hopefully become part of an impor-tant and necessary national initiative to professional-ize coaching.

As a point of information, this requirement will go into effect July 1, 2016. PIAA member school coaches will have a choice to either successfully complete the National Federation (NFHS) Fundamentals of Coach-ing and First Aid, Health and Safety courses online at www.nfhslearn.com or the American Sport Educa-tion Program (ASEP) Coaching Principles and First Aid courses in the classroom or online at www.asep.com or verify the completion of equivalent course(s).

There are significant benefits from having coaches

take the required courses. For example, by taking either the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching or the ASEP Coach-ing Principles course, coaches are better able to:

• Gain a better, more balanced perspective about winning

• Learn how to communicate and motivate their athletes more effectively• Plan their seasons and practices and teach better skills and techniques• Manage their teams and themselves better. If we truly believe in the value and benefits of in-

terscholastic athletic competition, then we owe it to our student-athletes to provide them with well-trained coaches. We need to ensure that the athletic experi-ence in Pennsylvania for our student-athletes is a wholesome and positive life learning experience. To-gether, we can accomplish this goal to keep education based athletes where it needs to be, and that is the hundreds of secondary schools across this great state of ours. By providing our coaches with the proper edu-cation, we can achieve this goal for future generations of participants.

PSADA Leadership Changeby bob buckanavage, Executive Director

The month of May 2013 for members of the PSADA Executive Board and Council will be remembered as a time of significant change in the leadership of the organization.

At the May school board meeting of the Harbor Creek School District, Mr. Andrew Krahe was approved as the next principal of the Harbor Creek Senior High School. Consequently, Mr. Krahe resigned from his po-sitions as President and Membership Chairman and ultimately, from the PSADA Executive Council.

As a result of Mr. Krahe’s resignation, the process of transition to fill these vacancies was implemented by the Executive Board [and active past presidents] and Executive Council. Mr. Gerry Schwille, Immediate Past-president, was the overwhelming choice to fill the one year term of office as President from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

The position of Membership Chairman was posted to the members of the Executive Council. During the

July Executive Board and Council meetings in Pitts-burgh, Mr. Dennis Ramella was selected by the Per-sonnel Committee to fill this important role for the or-ganization.

Mr. Krahe’s position as District 10 Representative on the Executive Council was filled by Mr. Joe Nagle, Northwestern High School and Mr. Bill Mook, Rocky Grove High School was approved for the one year term as At-large Representative.

On a final note, the PSADA Board and Executive Council express their gratitude for the years of service that Mr. Krahe contributed to the organization and ex-tend best wishes for success as Principal of Harbor Creek Senior High School.

There’s just one place where

students are students first,

where athletics are played with

purpose and perspective,

and where young athletes develop

the discipline and confidence they

need to be leaders in life.

That place is the high school

in your community.

High school sports:

A winning part of a complete education.

1. The PA General Assembly passed Legislation which was signed into law in July that significantly impacted interscholastic athletics, coaches and athletic directors across the state, namely: a. S.B. 200, Act 101 of 2011 establishes standards of care for Concussion Management; b. H.B. 1610, Act 59 of 2012 addresses Sudden Cardiac Arrest; c. H.B. 1901, Act 82 of 2012 requires Disclosure of Interscholastic Athletic Opportunities.

2. PSADA was awarded grant of $17,500.00 by the PA Liquor Control Board (PLCB) in July of 2012 for the purpose of implementing coaching education across the state with an emphasis on underage drinking and alcohol education. The American Sport Education Program (ASEP) “Lead instructors” included Bob Bozzuto in the Western Region, Gerry Schwille in the Central Region and Greg Pinelli in the Eastern Region.

3. The 8th annual Western Golf Outing hosted by Jon Vallina and Jack Fullen on July 6, 2012 at Rolling Acres Golf Course netted $3,836.90; and the Eastern Golf Outing hosted by Gerry Schwille on July 9, 2012 at the Links of Gettysburg netted $2,631.74 both benefiting the PSADA Foundation Scholarship Program.

4. The Class of 2013 marked the 17th year for the PSADA Student-Athlete Scholarship Program and the 3rd year under the PSADA Foundation. Since 1997, the scholarship program has distributed $59,000.00 to 160 deserving student-athletes. Under the direction of Greg Pinelli, the 2013 awards Program was expanded to include the Distinguished Service Award, the NIAAA State Award of Merit and the Robert Buckanavage Citation. The Foundation Board unanimously approved the funding of $500.00 for each of these awards.

5. District 4 Athletic Directors sponsored a Craig Hillier workshop on October 23, 2012 at Williamsport High School and approximately 130 student-athletes from 16 area high schools participated. Sean McCann hosted the event and regarded the workshop as a great opportunity for students to get involved and interact with each other away from the fields of competition.

6. Another record 160 members registered for one or more of the Pre-Conference Professional Development Workshops coordinated by Chairperson Holly Farnese. Instructors included: Peg Pennepacker, Karen Arnold, Chuck Abbott, Mike Craig, Greg Goldthorp, John Bomboy, Greg Pinelli, Gerry Schwille, Neil Matz, Dave Eavenson, Dave Bitting, Ryan Walsh and Holly Farnese. 8. PSADA Menbership Chairman Andy Krahe recognized 33 members for long service ranging from 15 years to 30 years of service to their respective schools, student-athletes, coaches, parents and communities.

9. The PSADA Foundation has made considerable progress and experienced financial growth since its inception at the March 2010 conference. Beginning with a fund balance of $62,000.00 three years ago, the foundation has grown to $194,000.00. The board approved to expand the awards program to $5,000.00 annually funded by the foundation.

11. Keynote Speaker Bill O’Brien, Penn State University head football coach, presented an excellent and inspiring insight on “how to deal with adversity” during the opening general session at the 46th Annual Conference. Introduced by President Andy Krahe, Coach O’Brien provided a powerful message about being a believer in any undertaking you face in life. This belief was tested when the NCAA imposed severe sanctions on Penn State resulting from the internal investigation of child abuse. Coach O’Brien referred to a quote that reads, “A real leader faces the music, even when he doesn’t like the tune.”

12. The founder and director of Life of An Athlete Human Performance Project, John Underwood, referenced his 25 years of experience working with athletes on the professional, Olympic, collegiate and scholastic levels to highlight the negative effects alcohol, drugs, diet and reduced sleep have on athletic performance during the Friday General Session at the Annual Conference.

13. The PIAA Current Issues session on Wednesday evening during the Annual Conference proved to be a valuable time for an update by Dr. Bob Lombardi, Executive Director, Mark Byers, COO, and Jim Zack, President. Topics ranging from constitution and by-law changes, booster clubs, cooperative agreements, football heat acclimatization, staff changes, legislation to boys playing on girls teams were presented and discussed.

14. The 1st Time Attendees Session chaired by Karen Arnold and Tim Walter was well attended and very informative. Teresa Shakespeare from PDE spoke about the Accountability Act, Bob Buckanavage addressed the group about the need to have all booster clubs accountable, and Karl Heimbaach, NIAAA Section 2 Representative talked about the benefits of becoming a NIAAA member.

Thanks to Dave Eavenson, Gerry Schwille, Holly Farnese and members of the board for their time and energy to make this all happen.

19. The 13th Annual Delegate Assembly Meeting was chaired by President Andy Krahe and 53 voting delegates representing all 12 PIAA Districts were present. The following motions were properly presented and approved for action by the PSADA Leadership: 1. That PSADA survey its members seeking input about the PIAA Heat Acclimatization proposal; 2. That PSADA pursue with PIAA mandatory coaching education to include concussion care, sudden cardiac arrest and first aid; 3. That PSADA pursue the NIAAA certification program (CAA) for all Athletic Directors in PA with the PDE; 4. That PSADA request the PIAA for a defined season for competitive cheerleading.

20. Veteran Conference Manager Ken Campbell resigned his position from the Executive Council and Foundation Board in June of 2012. Ken faithfully served the organization for 31 years and as President from 1990-92. Dave Eavenson was approved as the new Conference Manager during the October 2012 Executive council Meeting.

Pennsylvania InterscholasticAthletic AssociationJoins NFHS Network

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 9, 2013) — The Penn-sylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) is one of 28 members of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) that has joined the NFHS Network, the new all-digital network devoted to coverage of high school sports and performing arts through the Internet at www.NFHSnetwork.com.

The NFHS, in association with PlayOn! Sports (PlayOn), announced the official launch of the NFHS Network on August 1. With coverage of boys and girls sports and activities initially in at least 28 states during the 2013-14 school year, the NFHS Network becomes the largest aggregated destination for coverage of high school sports in the country. Through a subscription-based digital service available at www.NFHSnetwork.com, more students, parents and fans will be able to watch high school sports than ever before.

In addition to the PIAA, NFHS member associa-tions in the following states have finalized agreements and will be a part of the NFHS Network as the 2013-14 season begins: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colo-rado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Ne-braska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Ver-mont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

In addition, member associations in a number of other states are close to completing agreements and are expected to join the NFHS Network soon.

“We believe this is one of the greatest opportuni-ties in the 94-year history of the NFHS as we are able to take advantage of new technology and showcase high school sports and performing arts on a national scale,” said Bob Gardner, NFHS executive director. “We are excited to provide viewership opportunities for fans of high school sports that have never existed before. The NFHS Network will help showcase our primary mis-sion of expanding participation and opportunities for involvement in education-based interscholastic sports and performing arts activities.”

“PIAA is extremely proud to be a part of this initiative that will provide more opportunities to highlight the stu-dent athletes of Pennsylvania, said Dr. Robert A. Lom-bardi, PIAA Executive Director. “We have young people every day enjoying and excelling in the interscholastic athletic experience, and we now have a greater avenue to showcase their accomplishments.”

Postseason games in all sports sponsored by the PIAA will be available online on the Network, except for select championship events for which the PIAA has existing television contracts with other media partners. Viewing opportunities for NFHS Network events will be posted in the coming months at www.NFHSnetwork.com.

The NFHS Network will build on the past success of PlayOn’s high-quality coverage of high school sports at

“Teaming up with the NFHS is a natural progres-sion to build a truly national high school sports plat-form while honoring the local communities that sup-port them,” said David Rudolph, PlayOn! Sports chief executive officer. “Our mission is to serve the current and future generations of student-athletes, support and encourage their participation and make their per-formances accessible to their friends, family and fans on every media platform they use.”

The NFHS Network is a joint venture between the NFHS and PlayOn! Sports and will be governed and overseen by a combination of NFHS and PlayOn execu-tives.

“Ultimately, we want to make the NFHS Network the most treasured and trusted source for high school athletics,” Gardner said.

This new article series, C’s the Day, will explore how athletes can seize the role of being a team captain and lead their team to a season of significance. Each time a team captain is elected or selected, he or she must choose how to approach the vital role of leading

the team. In my 22 years of experience presenting leader-ship workshops, three approaches to leadership have be-come evident: Clueless, Casual, and/or Committed.

The Clueless approachA student-athlete taking the clueless approach doesn’t

take the role seriously. They may or may not even want the role. Typically, a team captain with the clueless approach is either very lazy or only wants to enjoy the occasional glory the role sometimes provides. They like the fact their name is called during introductions, but when the team faces a difficult issue, clueless captains magically disappear. Clue-less captains don’t connect with their teammates, plan team building events, or invest the time needed to learn leadership skills. It is unlikely that a clueless captain will help his or her team create a season of significance. They simply don’t care enough about their role or the team.

The Casual approachThe casual approach is typical of student-athletes who

are interested in becoming a good leader. The casual team captain may put some extra effort into the role initially, but the excitement of being named team captain fades quickly when the casual captain realizes how much work is re-quired to be effective. Casuals show flashes of effective-ness followed by flashes of doing very little to really lead the team. The casual approach does just enough to get by and usually flies under the radar. Casual leaders are more concerned about being “one of the gang” than they are about confronting a difficult issue that may be prevent-ing the team from improving. Casual leaders will not be remembered as being strong, effective and inspiring. Too often, this is the approach a majority of athletes take after being named team captain.

The Committed approachA student-athlete who takes the committed approach is

dedicated 100% to the role of being a team captain. This young person understands it is an honor to serve as a team captain. The committed team captain goes out of their way to create team unity, work through conflict, and organize off-season practices and team bonding events. The committed leader also understands that even at the high school level, they will learn important life lessons that will help them be-come successful in other areas of their life.

It’s the committed leader who understands that “we” is more important than “me” and is willing to put in extra effort which will often go unnoticed. Committed leaders have a strong desire to create a season of significance re-gardless of the overall team’s record.

The committed captain realizes that the role has both benefits and challenges, but they know that the benefits of being committed will far outweigh anything that becomes a burden. A committed team captain values intrinsic mo-tivation and knows his or her role is to take the team from point A to point B with integrity and hard work.

At this point, I hope you are asking yourself an impor-tant question: Am I going to take the committed approach to the upcoming athletic season? Or am I going to be clue-less or casual?

Dig deeper and evaluate yourself on the key qualities of great leaders by visiting, www.highschoolsportsleader.com Click “Take the Personal Evaluation Survey”(included under “Free Resources”), and see if you have what it takes to be a team leader. Many coaches and athletic directors nation-wide are requiring potential captains to take the survey before being considered for this vital role. The re-sults will give you a great indication of your current com-mitment level. Print them out and share them with your coach or AD.

Although it’s very easy to take a clueless or casual ap-proach, your coaching staff, teammates, and your commu-nity deserve much more. They need you to step into the role of team captain and create a positive experience for everyone involved.
