ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST MODERN UNIVERSITIES

Creating world-ready graduates

AUT’s mission is to create great graduates, and each member of our staff contributes to this. We offer exceptional learning experiences that prepare students to be successful wherever in the world their career may take them. We encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, and the ability to explore new technologies, challenge routine thinking and solve problems in new ways. We embrace new technologies to lead the learning of tomorrow and prepare our students for the rapidly changing world. As a contemporary university we also place an emphasis on working across disciplines in our research, and teaching and learning. Thanks to our innovative teaching, excellent reputation and combination of theoretical and practical learning, AUT graduates are highly favoured by employers, with 95% of available graduates in paid employment within nine months of graduation.

World-leading staffOur academic staff are research-active and at the forefront of their disciplines. Many of them are internationally known as experts in their fields, and organisations around the world draw on their expertise for key projects. For example, Associate Professor Felicity Lamm was appointed as the Government’s chief advisor for health and safety, and Professor Gail Pacheco’s research is being used by the Government to address the gender pay gap. Professor Steve Henry was the first person in Australasia to secure a spot in the world-leading Johnson & Johnson Innovation JLABS in Houston to further his work on surface-modification technology Kode Technology, which has the potential to fight cancer. Associate Professor Barbara Bollard’s innovative use of drones to monitor remote and unique ecosystems from Antarctica to Africa has caught the attention of scientists from NASA and the SETI Institute who recognise this approach could also help them find evidence of life on Mars.

World-class teaching and learningWe’re proud to be one of the world’s best modern universities – Times Higher Education has ranked us as the top millennial university in Australasia and number 14 in the world. We have been a university since 2000, and are now the second largest in the country and ranked among the top 1% (251-300) of universities in the world. We have an overall five-star rating from university rankings organisation QS, in addition to five star ratings for Teaching, Employability, Research, Internationalisation, Facilities, Innovation and Inclusiveness. Study with us and you can enrol in our range of world-ranked subjects, which include New Zealand’s top-ranked health programmes and the country’s best sport science school.

An innovative teaching and learning spaceAUT’s three modern campuses have several award-winning buildings which were created using sustainable principles and feature inviting, collaborative and functional learning areas, auditoriums and research spaces. This includes the state-of-the-art Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences building, which has unique design features that mean it can be used as a teaching tool and ‘living lab’ where students can get hands-on experience. We also have a number of world-class facilities including one of only two motion capture studios in the country; New Zealand’s top sports science facility, AUT Millennium; and the country’s only two major radio telescopes, which are involved in projects with international research partners.

A global outlookWe know that to create truly great graduates, we must do more than get them ready for their career; we must get them ready for the world. We are consistently ranked first in New Zealand for international outlook by world rankings organisations QS and Times Higher Education. We have more than 5,000 industry partners around the world, and have collaborated on research projects with 140 different countries. Our students are from 137 different countries, and half of our academic staff were born overseas, and they often share their international experience and connections with their students.

Innovative and relevant research AUT is ranked first in New Zealand for global research impact (the number of times our research is cited by academics globally) by Times Higher Education and the US News Global Universities Rankings. We have more than 60 research centres and institutes delivering leading research – from space research to artificial intelligence and robotics, and ecology to physical activity and nutrition. AUT research addresses issues facing the environment and society, and our discoveries are widely used. Our research also feeds back into the classroom, and students can contribute to and learn from these research discoveries.

Students at AUT South Campus

“I was raised to always think outside the box, or even better, to think of a new box altogether. AUT embodies this by taking bold moves and forging a new path that older universities end up following. AUT was a sure-fire choice for me – it gives you the opportunity to do what no other person your age is doing; to really navigate that uncharted territory.”

Shae Parsons-WanoaNgāti Porou, Samoan Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Communication Studies conjoint programme

“I’ll forever be an advocate for AUT. I loved all the opportunities I was given – from the CO.STARTERS@AUT entrepreneurship programme to the AUT Internz and the Summer of Tech internship programmes. I feel that at AUT I was treated as an individual, had a voice, and was pointed towards opportunities that would further my career and my personal development.”

Matthias BachmannBachelor of Creative Technologies

“AUT provides a really international environment, which helps students become familiar with the real workplace outside the university. AUT is ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world, which is evidence for the quality of its education. AUT is also the youngest of New Zealand’s universities, which makes it the most dynamic and innovative university in the country.”

Trang NguyenVietnamMaster of Marketing

“AUT is a leading education provider in the Asia-Pacific region, renowned for research excellence and innovative teaching. You’re immersed in a multifaceted intellectual setting with the goal to train future leaders and thinkers in all fields. There’s also a lot more collaborative learning with smaller class sizes and I think it’s the thing that sets AUT apart from other universities.”

Lourdaiz Ah ChongBachelor of Business in Finance & Marketing, Advertising, Retailing and Sales

“What is fascinating about AUT is the constant interaction between the university and different New Zealand industries. Having academic staff who are linked to businesses and industries is one of AUT’s greatest strengths. AUT has the most wonderful professors, advisors and mentors who lead you towards the right path. You’ll build your confidence by doing research and problem solving, while being supported by people who believe in you.”

Seyedehsara (Sara) Masoomi DezfooliIranDoctor of Philosophy – Science

“I had visited campuses for tons of universities, in New Zealand and America, but AUT always felt right for me. Now, I realise that it was probably the community feel that attracted me to AUT. It seems like no matter what you’re doing, everyone is willing to help each other out. Between the students and staff, there’s an incredible network of support.”

Page 7: PROSPECTUS - Auckland University of Technology...Welcome to Auckland University of Technology. In the 20 years since AUT was established as a university, we have undergone remarkable

When AUT became a university in January 2000 it had a clear vision for its future: to provide its students with exceptional learning experiences, and send them into the world as outstanding graduates.

AUT has been a university for 20 years now and that student-centred vision has helped guide the development of world-class programmes, teaching, research, facilities and partnerships.

The growth and transformation have been rapid. The AUT North Campus and the City Campus have expanded, and the South Campus has opened its doors. Across AUT there are 17 schools spanning diverse areas of study from business to health, law to sport, and languages to art and design. It is home to 60 research centres and institutes leading local and international studies.

AUT has become New Zealand’s second largest university: 29,250 students, 994 doctoral candidates, 3,400 staff, 195 professors and associate professors, and more than 100,000 AUT alumni.

While the numbers are impressive, the most striking part of AUT’s evolution is how quickly it has risen to become a globally respected university, recognised for its great graduates and high-impact research.

Today, AUT is in the top 1% of universities worldwide and the #1 millennial university in Australasia. AUT’s staff receive top ratings for their academic teaching and its graduates receive 5 out of 5 stars for employability.

AUT is ranked first in New Zealand for global research impact and for international outlook, reflecting the fact it has collaborated on research projects with 140 different countries and worked with more than 5,000 industry partners around the world.

So much has changed in 20 years but the vision is the same. AUT’s commitment is to help our students become great graduates who have the knowledge and skills to succeed and to contribute to our local and global communities.

Finding the right course of treatment for breast cancer is key to curing it - and AUT is at the forefront of research set to give doctors a tool to predict how a patient will respond to different therapies.

Working with collaborators in the UK, Singapore and China, AUT researcher Associate Professor Dong-Xu Liu has discovered a cancer-related protein, called SHON, that can be used as a biomarker, or identifying characteristic, to indicate whether a patient will benefit from hormone (endocrine) therapy or chemotherapy.

“It has the potential to change the current clinical practice of breast cancer management around the world,” he says.

“Our findings would allow breast cancer patients to receive treatments that are the most appropriate to their characteristics, therefore improving treatment response and saving lives.”

Associate Professor Liu spent 12 years at the Liggins Institute before joining AUT’s Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences and is internationally

recognised for his breast cancer, molecular and cellular oncology research.

Cultivating strong local and international research networks is an important focus at AUT and this recent cancer breakthrough is evidence of how vital those connections can be.

It was access to the world’s largest breast cancer tissue bank in the UK, and to information collected on patients and their treatment spanning more than a decade, that made it possible to pinpoint the cancer-related protein and its success as a biomarker for treatment.

The expertise and global reach of researchers like Associate Professor Liu also presents incredible opportunities for postgraduate study at AUT.

Stacey Li, one of Associate Professor Liu’s PhD students, is working on how to use the SHON biomarker in clinics while another two PhD students, Vasanti Sirikonda and Zohreh Riahi, are building on another breakthrough area of his research which identified a gene with potential causal links to breast cancer.

Securing a job at the world’s largest museum is a lifelong career goal for some people, but for Jamey Vaa’etasi Solomua William Bailey the opportunity to work at the Smithsonian came as soon as he completed his Bachelor of Communication Studies at AUT.

A TV and Screen Production major, Jamey spent eight months as the Smithsonian’s curatorial assistant intern.

Besides working on the museum’s annual Mother Tongue Film Festival (and helping quadruple the number of attendees), one of Jamey’s favourite projects saw him create a film about a New Zealand exhibition of taonga Māori, Tuku Iho, and a series of performances and interactive workshops culminating in the donation of a carved waka to the Smithsonian.

Jamey says the internship with the Smithsonian has provided an amazing foundation for his career in film and cultural studies.

It might sound like an incredibly rare opportunity, but it’s not a one-off for AUT graduates.

Through AUT’s Internz programme, more than 150 graduates have started their careers with internships in the US, Canada, Singapore and the UK, working for organisations including Allbirds, Lululemon, FCB West, Paramount Recording Studios, Sundance Institute, TimeZoneOne and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

AUT’s director of development, Rebecca Lowery, says Internz has been developed to give students and graduates an opportunity to apply their learning in a global context.

For graduate Shannon Soudom the AUT Internz programme led to a role with New York’s Westpac Institutional Bank - an ideal fit for someone who had discovered a passion for finance in their first year at AUT and graduated with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Analytics and Finance.

“We put a camera in their hands on day one and within six weeks they’ve completed a studio or field production,” says James Nicholson, head of department for screen production.

Delivering the right balance of experiential learning and theory is key to the success of the Screen Production major in the Bachelor of Communication Studies programme.

“We produce graduates who are highly technical aware, who understand story development and all the different aspects of production. It’s what has made our graduates so employable for so many years.”

Students at AUT also have access to the latest equipment so when they move into industry roles they’re already familiar with the cameras, accessories and production facilities they will be using.

Nicholson says some of the equipment being used by students currently studying screen production papers includes the same camera model used by New Zealand filmmaker Gaylene Preston to shoot her feature documentary My Year with Helen, and specialist pieces including GoPros and cameras built into drones.

In her final year of the degree screen production student Gianni Aro-Reid created a short, observational-style documentary film following her whānau as they created a modern take on a traditional hāngi.

“It’s about allowing the viewers to see all the hard work that goes into making a hāngi but also about the family connections and bonds that are made in the process.”

In addition to the high-end equipment she was able to use for her documentary shoot, Gianni says the success of her documentary came down to the training she gained throughout her degree and the ongoing support of her lecturers.

“Each film duo is assigned a tutor as their executive producer (EP) whose job it is to support and advise you throughout your filmmaking journey, and that was really valuable for getting advice on our project when we needed it.”

For people who experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) the impact can be prolonged and life-changing.

Almost one in three New Zealanders experience at least one TBI by the age of 25 and nearly half of all people who suffer a TBI have long-term problems as a result – even from a mild TBI or concussion.

At AUT, these types of injuries have been the subject of groundbreaking studies and its researchers are internationally recognised as experts in the field.

One recent AUT study, published in the Neuropsychology journal, showed that mild traumatic brain injuries - which account for 90% of all TBIs - can impair people’s ability to ‘read’ social interactions, potentially leading to ongoing difficulties with work and social relationships.

AUT Professor Alice Theadom led that study and is director of the new TBI Network, established to support vital education and research into the prevention, care and rehabilitation of these injuries.

“The research hub fosters collaboration across different disciplines and between patients, whānau, service providers,

clinicians, researchers and policymakers,” says Professor Theadom, a Rutherford Discovery Fellow.

“It can take a long time for research to lead to changes in everyday practice, but the TBI Network is dedicated to finding new and creative ways to prevent injury and improve recovery, to have a more immediate impact for people affected by TBI.”

Having access to the TBI Network and to multidisciplinary teams of researchers creates an exciting opportunity for postgraduate researchers at AUT.

PhD candidate Josh McGeown, who is researching how to rehabilitate athletes following mild TBIs, is being supervised by Professor Theadom, NZ Rugby scientist Ken Quarrie and Professor Patria Hume, a leading expert in sport injury prevention and sports performance biomechanics.

With the support of his supervisors, Josh is working towards improving understanding of how to most effectively prescribe exercise and nutrition strategies to reduce the symptoms of mild TBI.

Tourism is the world’s number one employer and ensuring a sustainable future for this global industry is the focus for researchers at the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute (NZTRI) at AUT.

“If we want sustainable tourism development then we need regions and countries to be making good decisions based on quality data, not just traditional metrics like visitor arrivals,” says NZTRI director Professor Simon Milne.

“We need to have a deeper understanding of visitor characteristics and how these impact both business and community.”

NZTRI was established over 20 years ago and its team of experts conducts research on a number of projects in New Zealand and around the world.

One of NZTRI’s major research programmes is the Pacific Tourism Data Initiative. It provides the region’s island nations with the tools and data they need to make evidence-based decisions about the future management of tourism.

Professor Milne says work began in 2006 with an international visitor survey in the Cook Islands but has since expanded to include Vanuatu, Niue, Samoa, Papua New

Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Yap, one of the Federated States of Micronesia.

NZTRI’s cost-effective research model uses online surveys of international visitors, local businesses and communities to gather data and inform multidimensional decision support systems. The model has attracted attention and support from the World Bank, US Department of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

To date the research has provided answers about the impact and spending of different visitor groups, community perspectives on tourism, and specific environmental factors negatively impacting tourist experiences (which in the case of the Cook Islands informed government action to resolve an algal bloom).

With the ongoing collection of data, Professor Milne says the team now has national tourism performance indicators to work with and can develop regional comparisons, explore niche tourism markets and opportunities, and uncover new insights.

“This research is already changing the way decisions are being made about tourism development around the region.”

Improving health outcomes for patients might seem like a goal that’s out of reach for university students, but at AUT it’s a critical part of the learning process.

Bachelor of Health Science students participate in hands-on programmes at the university’s on-campus clinic, AUT Integrated Health (AIH), where they learn about collaborative care and work with different health disciplines to create individualised care plans for patients.

AIH clinical manager Dr Brenda Flood says traditionally health professionals have been educated in silos and so they go on to practise in the same way.

“If we want to change the healthcare system, we have to change the way that we teach. Evidence shows that collaborative care leads to the best health outcomes.”

In their final year Puawai Clair, a physiotherapy student, and podiatry student Dorcas Choo both took part in a six-week interprofessional programme at AIH that saw them consulting with clients with diabetes and working collaboratively with a team of students from different disciplines

to develop holistic healthcare plans.

Puawai says the programme, which is carried out under the supervision of clinical experts, deepened her understanding of what other health professionals do and allowed her to clinically reason why she would work alongside or refer patients to practitioners in other health disciplines.

For Dorcas and Puawai, working with patients at AIH showed them the importance of whakawhanaungatanga (establishing relationships) and a patient or whānau-centred approach to healthcare.

“I found that patients were more motivated to follow treatment plans when they were included in the team to manage their diabetes.”

Seeing the patient outcomes was the highlight for both students.

“The most rewarding part was watching the patients progress within their health and wellbeing, from week one to week six. It wasn’t just about the physical wellbeing of the patient, but also the emotional, social and mental wellbeing that had improved.”

Seeing students consuming artificial, sugar-laden energy drinks to keep themselves awake sparked an idea for AUT Bachelor of Business student Holly Sutich: a ‘clean’ energy drink alternative.

Holly and her classmate Bradley Hagan saw an opportunity to develop an energy drink that provided a more natural boost with antioxidants, a caffeinated ‘superleaf’ guayusa and no artificial sugar.

Four years on, their clean energy drink is a reality. Phoric is stocked in selected stores around the country and by Foodstuffs supermarkets across the North Island, with the goal to expand those sales nationwide and then tackle sales in Australia.

Getting to this point has taken a huge amount of hard work for the co-founders and the concept for Phoric - which Holly and Bradley came up with in their first year at AUT - might never have got past the idea stage if it hadn’t been for the programmes and support AUT offers to aspiring entrepreneurs.

“Starting a business while at university is quite rare, but it was hands-down the environment at AUT that helped Phoric come to life,” says Holly, who is balancing the growth of Phoric

with part-time study to complete her Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Communication Studies conjoint programme.

“We received huge support from the AUT Business School and the CO.STARTERS team, as well as from programmes like Shadow a Leader and the X Challenge.”

The nine-week CO.STARTERS programme helps entrepreneurs evaluate their business idea, understand what it takes to create a sustainable business and connect with industry mentors and support.

“The most valuable insight from CO.STARTERS was the importance of talking to our customers and getting feedback at every stage of the process. It allowed us to adapt and pivot.”

Holly and Bradley were also awarded a $30,000 prize package to develop Phoric through AUT’s X Challenge.

“Staff at AUT have gone above and beyond to support what we are doing – pushing our learning and growth opportunities to be as prepared as we can be for this insane, stressful and amazing journey.”

Helping you succeed in your studiesOur library and learning support team offers a wide range of services and resources, and there are digital resources available to develop your academic skills. The Library also runs a range of workshops to help you get the most out of your studies and work smarter, rather than harder. Our extensive peer mentoring programme also enables students to learn from others who have already completed the same paper. You can also access Studiosity, a free online help service available anytime for guidance and feedback on academic writing and skills.

Support for postgraduate studentsThe Graduate Research School provides leadership and support services for postgraduate research students and their supervisors at AUT. We provide advice and information related to applications for the Master of Philosophy and doctoral programmes, offer advice on postgraduate policy matters, and monitor the progress of research students at AUT from the moment they’re admitted to their programme to the time they complete their degree. Each faculty also has dedicated staff to support postgraduate students in all programmes throughout their studies.

A vibrant research cultureWe create a wide range of opportunities for supervisors and postgraduate research students to collaborate, connect and share ideas through workshops, events, doctoral inductions and the research students’ peer groups. The annual Research Symposium and 3 Minute Thesis competition are among the many events that showcase AUT’s student research culture and celebrate postgraduate student success.

Free access to digital tools and resourcesWe offer students all the digital tools needed to succeed, including free Wi-Fi on campus, the full Microsoft Office 365 suite for up to five devices and access to LinkedIn Learning (lynda.com), a world-leading online learning platform.

Student ambassadors ready to helpAUT has more than 200 knowledgeable student ambassadors who help support events and activities across AUT. One of their key roles is to help new students as they settle into their studies. We also have Are You OK? advisors who focus on students’ wellbeing, and make sure students are aware of the support services and resources available.

We embrace all faiths

We take a multifaith approach by providing spiritual support to students from various beliefs. AUT encourages understanding, tolerance and harmony, respecting everyone’s spiritual views. Access our faith and prayer rooms on campus, or get support from our team of chaplains.

Stay healthy and wellAt AUT it’s OK to ask for help. We actively encourage all students to be aware of their own wellness needs – mind, body and spirit. You’ll have access to free or low-cost medical treatment at our full-service medical centres, which provide private and confidential care for a range of issues. We’re also committed to helping you build resilience, mental strength and the skills to manage stress. That’s why all students can get free, confidential counselling sessions and mental health support. In addition to one-on-one appointments, we also run a range of group workshops. Talk to us about any topic – study-related or personal – or join a support group to help you with specific issues, like managing anxiety or going through relationship difficulties. We also organise Wiser at AUT events where students can develop better self-knowledge and a greater sense of purpose.

Representing your interestsThe AUT Student Association (AUTSA) exists to advocate and represent the interests of all students attending AUT. The association also publishes the university magazine Debate, and runs social activities during Orientation and throughout the year.

Safe and friendly campusesWe make sure our students are safe when they’re on campus. Our friendly security staff are available day and night to help if you have any concerns.

“For my doctoral research, I’m focusing on acoustical engineering and how to make spaces more suitable acoustically for the building’s purpose. When I decided to do my PhD, I researched a lot of different topics within the field of architectural engineering and this one stood out as an area where I can make a contribution through my research. I think it’s a really interesting topic. I love AUT

“I had seen some of the work of previous design students from AUT, and was blown away by their level of skill and knowledge. At AUT I was surrounded by people who

were very talented, which made me want to push my skills even further and strive to achieve the same standards. What I love most about my role now is that it combines

two of my passions: design and helping people. User experience design is about understanding people – their needs, wants and desires – and designing

something that helps them achieve what they intend to do.”

Joshua Bryan OngUser Experience Designer, Air New Zealand Bachelor of Design in Communication Design

“AUT offers a perfect environment to design in. Through the studio culture I made lifelong friends – spending countless late nights in the studio leads to great friendships. Being taught by great academic staff in spatial design also enriched my experience at AUT. They helped progress my learning and skills, heavily influencing how I work as a designer today. Since I was young one of my career goals was to work in New York City, and to have my first job in the industry here, through the AUT Internz programme, is an amazing personal achievement.”

“I had eight years’ experience in the area of human resources, and could see that the Master of Business would enable me to marry my previous work experience with my desire to lay the ground for doctoral research in this area in the future. AUT has students of different ages, abilities, ethnicities, backgrounds and worldviews. Peer learning is therefore fabulous, and the exchange of different ideas contributes to the overall learning process. Despite being new to New Zealand when I joined AUT, I felt at home from day one, and that speaks volumes of the spirit of inclusion that AUT stands for.”

“I chose this degree because I had a desire to sharpen my finance-related skills. The Master of Applied Finance curriculum at AUT suited me well, as it was based on the

“I chose communications because I felt that it was a broad field, from PR to journalism and advertising. I had relatives who had studied at AUT and during my high school term

breaks I would go along with them. I was really impressed with what I saw, particularly the genuine support AUT students received from staff. I knew I would be in good hands once I submitted my application to AUT. I reckon AUT not only enables its

students to be work-ready, but encourages them to set long-term goals and believe that they’re capable of becoming future CEOs or leaders.”

“In my mind, AUT is almost synonymous with communication studies. It was the logical choice if I want to be where the people who are at the spearpoint of my research are. I’m hoping the knowledge I’m gaining through my studies will inform whatever comes after. It’s nice to return to study after nine years away, and find that my thoughts are valued and that there’s an entire ecosystem of knowledge that can help me express them. The academic staff are knowledgeable of, and engaged with, the topics they discuss. I enjoy being encouraged to pursue my ideas and look to the research that has been done to expand on them.”

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH At AUT’s School of Education, we believe in high-quality research that has impact, and have world-class researchers and research strengths across education. Our research-active staff are widely known for their expertise in all areas of the education sector – from education policy, the changing nature of public education and mindfulness for teachers, to educational leadership and leadership development, equity culture and diversity, and the philosophy of education.

“I love seeing a student’s face light up with the realisation and understanding that they’ve finally grasped something they struggled with before. AUT has a forward-thinking education programme, focused on directing learning towards teaching and using practical opportunities to consolidate theoretical knowledge. The group projects

provided opportunities to work with a variety of people, and learn how to manage people’s strengths and weaknesses. AUT’s culture of support ensured that we all had a safe place

to reflect and celebrate our experiences. All of this has transferred into my professional career; having a network of support and resources to tap into is invaluable.”

George AitkenYear 7 & 8 Teacher / Sports Coordinator, Waitakere Primary School Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching)

“If you have a day when you’re feeling slightly under the weather, without doubt, kids will make you feel better. Where else can you go to work every day and feel like you’re making a positive impact? What attracted me to AUT was that the class sizes were small, and you were able to get more engagement and interaction with your peers and lecturers. It felt like an environment that was geared towards building a community rather than creating an individual. At AUT I was challenged in every way possible – developing my beliefs and practice, and pushing my boundaries. I met people I know I’ll be friends with forever; people who are open to challenging mindsets. I liked that AUT seems more open and willing to try new things.”

“The C skills learnt through AUT – communication, creativity, curiosity and collaboration – are imperative to success in your career, relationships and as a future leader. As an engineer in the workplace I now work in teams to solve problems, and as part of a women in STEM organisation I apply curiosity and creativity in the realms of tech and STEM. In my role, I’m involved in the entire process from the initial conceptual design of a new product to launching it into the market. I really enjoy the hands-on aspects, and it’s incredible to see something you initially conceptualised in your mind become a real-life object.”

“Security is a field that is always changing, so you have to practise your skills a lot and try to keep up with technology. I love this career because it’s knowledge that’s in demand right now and I have a lot of things I need to learn more about. In addition to my work at the National Bank of Cambodia, I also teach students at the National University of Management about forensics and security. I often use the methodology I was taught at AUT with my students now. I can’t forget my time at AUT – it was really amazing. It’s about the community at AUT – everyone is helping each other.”

“I decided to study computing because I could see that a degree in computer and information science would enable me to be at the forefront of innovation and new development. AUT was the university of my choice because I really liked the

structure of the degree. I also had the opportunity to explore which area of IT I enjoyed before specialising in a specific field. I appreciated that AUT is constantly evolving its programmes so that the content taught aligns with the IT industry.”

“AUT offers state-of-the-art facilities to support hands-on training. In the oral health simulation lab you can practise clinical skills on fake heads under the watchful eyes of your clinical educators, enabling you to truly perfect your clinical skills. AUT also

provides over 1,000 hours of clinical experience in their on-site dental clinic as well as at Auckland Regional Dental Service clinics across Auckland. I remember being a new

“Throughout studying physiotherapy, I was fortunate to have had great role models and support systems that allowed me to be who I am. I’ll forever be grateful for the many mentors and friends I’ve made through being a part of the physiotherapy whānau at AUT. My role now involves working with adolescents in schools, as well as with all age groups in the community and in sports. I love working in different environments and in a role that challenges me to continue to learn. I enjoy networking with different age groups and cultures.”

“The national census of Nepal shows that almost a third of Nepalese households include at least one migrant worker working abroad. Earlier studies also highlighted that Nepalese migrant workers and their spouses are at high-risk of HIV and a key population for HIV transmission in Nepal. I wanted to study the life of Nepalese migrant workers and the context and behaviour related to HIV risk in more detail. The programme I’m in is full of global opportunities, especially in third world countries like mine. Public health problems are global challenges, even though they may occur in different forms in different countries and communities. A lot of things still need to be done to improve quality of life globally, and AUT is the best place to gain a qualification and skills in this field.”

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH Our research expertise spans from marine tourism to the co-creation of hospitality experiences and from event studies to gastronomy, and many of our staff are globally known as experts in their field. We’re the home of the renowned New Zealand Tourism Research Institute, which delivers innovative solutions for the tourism industry and has been involved in research projects across the globe. We also publish Hospitality Insights, which showcases our ground-breaking research for hospitality practitioners.

“I chose this degree because when I finished school I was really interested in event management, and AUT had the best reputation for the programme I was interested in. I had my heart set on the event industry; however, through the different experiences I had, I found that hotels were where I wanted to be. In my role now, I’m responsible for the daily operations of Club Signature, which is the hotel’s executive lounge. As Club Signature is the most exclusive outlet within the hotel, it’s imperative that the services we provide are of the highest standards. My role involves managing our team and ensuring our guests have the best possible experience.”

Rebecca Bunn Club Signature Manager, SO/ AucklandBachelor of International Hospitality Management in Event Management and Human Resource Management

“My lightbulb moment definitely happened when we were told in our Event Production paper at AUT that our next project included fundraising for the Make a Wish Foundation. This inspired me so much and completely changed my view on events. I didn’t only want to put a glamorous event together, but wanted my events to have purpose, inspire change and to help those less fortunate than ourselves. This is a career that gives you the chance to stop time and allow your guests to be fully immersed in the moment, whether it’s a bride on her wedding day, a teen at a music

festival or an inspiring entrepreneur at a business seminar.”

inspire young people to do great things for their community and the environment. That’s why I wanted to learn and develop my teaching and researching capacity through my PhD

journey. I love the way AUT has established so many innovative initiatives and robust international partnership with many countries and organisations. I enjoy

being surrounded by so many proactive staff and students.”

“As cliché as it may sound, I couldn’t have asked for better supervisors. Doing a PhD is a long and difficult journey, and often it’s also a lonely journey. However, my supervisors have always been there for me, encouraging, guiding and supporting me whenever I need them. As an educator, it goes without saying that the ‘culture’ of a university was the biggest factor in my overall decision to study at AUT. I appreciate what AUT has to offer students. For instance, it offers a range of support services and facilities for students on all campuses. I also felt that AUT

reflects the changing world due to the fact that it’s a young university.”

“I appreciated the contemporary nature of the AUT law degree. Some of the papers analysed the interaction of New Zealand law with new innovations and technological challenges. For example, I wrote an essay on the legality of drones within the New Zealand legal system, while some of my fellow students wrote essays on the legality of bitcoin, or using blockchain technology within the legal

system. The people I met during my studies were another highlight. I met a diverse group of students from different backgrounds and countries of the

world, some of which have become my closest friends.”

“It’s really important that Māori and Pacific voices are heard and our faces seen. I’d always wanted to work in the film industry, so the Māori Media major was an obvious fit because it allowed me to study film, television and the media, but with a cultural lens. We were picking up cameras and making our own films, going into the studio to record and edit. That kind of learning really appealed to me, and the friends I made are friends for life. The biggest highlight of my time at AUT however was graduation. That was the culmination of years of not only my own personal sacrifice but that of my family, friends and those who taught me.”

Matilda Poasa Projects and Relationships Co-ordinator, MāorilandBachelor of Māori Development in Māori Media

“The main highlight of my time at AUT was the immense amount of support I received from all the staff, especially from every member of staff at Te Ara Poutama. They went above and beyond for me in all aspects of my life really. Another highpoint for me were the new relationships I formed while studying at AUT, which was a very safe, inclusive and welcoming environment. In my role now, I get to be part of shaping young Māori learners

into a better version of themselves; whatever they believe that to be. I enjoy having the opportunity to work with them and encourage, inspire and show them that

whatever they aspire to be is achievable.”

“I’m researching how photogrammetry can be used for conducting a risk assessment of a landfill site. My research was motivated by looking around at the various amounts of waste we produce and send to landfill sites. In Zambia, solid waste management is a problem for many communities and that inspired my research. My research will help communities and industry understand the risks

associated with unregulated disposal sites and highlight the need for sustainable waste management practices. AUT has afforded me the opportunity to learn from

highly experienced and knowledgeable educators and friendly staff. I’ve been able to study how to apply technology to science, especially in my area

of focus, environmental science. Science and technology have always combined to create better scientists and AUT combines both to produce the best in the field.”

It was through her influence and mentorship that I found my purpose and where I ‘fit’ in academia. For my PhD thesis I’m focusing on children’s right to have their views taken

into account when adults are making decisions that affect their lives. I’m hoping that my PhD thesis will provide a platform for future research that is dedicated to ensuring young people’s

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH AUT is globally known for its leading sport and exercise science research. Our research covers sport and activity-related areas, as well as performance, nutrition, coaching and human potential. We’re proud to be the home of New Zealand’s top sport and fitness facility, AUT Millennium, which helps our communities be healthy and our top athletes become champions. Based at AUT Millennium, the Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand (SPRINZ) is New Zealand’s number one sports research institute. Its world-class laboratory facilities and international reputation attract many overseas researchers and students to New Zealand, and SPRINZ research has received funding from organisations like the Health Research Council, Sport New Zealand and the World Health Organization.

“I initially thought I would end up working in high performance sport physio, but then I found my passion for analysis and analysing performance in a sports setting when I took the paper Analysing Performance. Eventually this passion led me to my current role at Hockey New Zealand. I would definitely recommend the AUT sport programmes. AUT has great lecturers, great university staff who can offer advice if you need it, great workplace experience as part of your studies and a great environment to study in.”

“When I came here on one of my first days at AUT and saw the facilities at AUT Millennium I was extremely impressed. AUT Millennium is very friendly and supportive, especially at SPRINZ. The majority of the students here are international, and we all help each other out, and give each other advice on where to live and things to avoid. You know you can always talk to someone at SPRINZ if you need help. For my PhD, I’m researching how to rehabilitate athletes following a concussion. With the growing concern of mild traumatic brain injury in contact sports like rugby union it’s essential to identify objective methods to assist in clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of sports-related mild traumatic brain injury.”

Your student visa One of the most important steps is to get your student visa organised before you reach New Zealand. Without a valid visa and medical/travel insurance it’s unlawful to study in New Zealand.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: PREPARING TO STUDY IN NEW ZEALAND

Working in New ZealandAs an international student you can work 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during scheduled vacations. Please note that the number of hours you can work during your study will not be enough to fund your studies. Master’s by research and doctoral students may be granted unlimited work rights.

To find out more visit immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/options/study/working-during-after-your-study

Medical and travel insurance The New Zealand Government requires all international students to have appropriate insurance. Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of the treatment. That is why it is so important that you have medical and travel insurance while studying at AUT.

To make it easy, we include AUT’s default medical insurance, the Studentsafe Inbound University plan, as part of your Offer of Place. You don’t have to accept the AUT insurance policy, and can choose an alternative from an approved provider on our website.
