PERSONAL NOTES AUCKLAND Professor J.C. BUTCHER has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Sydney for his published work on the numerical solu tion of ordinary differential equations. Professor FRANK AVERY HAIGHT of Pennsylvania State University is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Mathematics, University of Auckland, from May till the end of August 1971. Professor Haight specializes in applied probability in operations research and was at one time a senior lecturer in the Department. Associate Professor G.A.F. SEBER, after a long association with this department, will be leaving at the end of the second term to take up a personal chair in biometrics and the directorship of the new Biometrics Research Unit at the University of Otago. Dr P.A. DIONNE has been appointed to a senior lectureship. He is a graduate of Columbia University, New York, and holds a State Doctorate from the University of Paris. His field of specialization is analysis. Dr D.J. SMITH has been appointed to a lectureship. He is a graduate of Portland State University, Oregon and Washington State University. His field of specialization is abstract algebra. Dr W.J. WALKER has been appointed to a lectureship. He is a graduate of the University of Auckland and the University of Illinois. His field of specialization is analysis. Dr I.L. REILLY has been appointed to a lectureship. He is a graduate of Victoria University of Wellington, and of the University of Illinois. AUCKLAND

Professor J.C. BUTCHER has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Sydney for his published work on the numerical solu­tion of ordinary differential equations.

Dr M.K. VAMANAMURTHY'has been appointed to a senior lectureship and took up his position in July of this year. He is a graduate of the University of Mysore, India and the University of Michigan. His field of specialization is complex analysis.

Messrs M.A.HILDER, P.C. McNICKLE, M.A. RAINS, P.M. SCOTT have been appointed to junior lectureships in the Department of Mathematics. Mr Rains and Mr Scott will be leaving shortly for postgraduate study at the Universities of British Columbia and Sheffield respectively. These junior lecturers are all graduates of the University of Auckland. Mrs B. REILLY, a graduate of Victoria University, Miss L. GILMORE, a graduate of this University and Mr P. WANNAN, a graduate of Otago University have also taken up junior lectureships in this Department.

Mrs G.R. CASSEY, who had been a tutor in mathematics, left at the end of June.

Mr A.W. TILLS, senior lecturer in mathematics, resigned from the full time staff at the end of 1970 to devote himself to actuarial work.

Dr B.D. CALVERT has been appointed to a lectureship in mathe­matics and took up his position in August. He is a graduate of this University and of the University of Chicago. His field of specialization is non-linear functional analysis.

Dr M.J. LENNON has been appointed to a lectureship in mathe­matics and takes up his appointment in September. He is a graduate of this University and of the Massachusett's Institute of Technology. His field of specialization is functional analysis and its application to problems in theoretical physics.

Dr P.J.- LORIMER will be on leave for one year from August and will visit universities in Canada and elsewhere.

HAMILTON

University of Waikato

Mr J.C. TURNER has taken up an appointment as Reader. He is taking charge of the development of courses in statistics and operational research. Temporarily he is also acting director

of computing facilities. Mr Turner is a graduate of Leeds

University and his last position was that of principal lecturer at Leeds Polytechnic. His main interest is in stochastic network

processes.

Dr R.J. HOSKING has taken up an appointment as Reader and he is taking charge of the development of courses in mathematical physics. Dr Hosking is a graduate of the University of Adelaide and the University of Western Ontario. He spent the six months preceding his appointment pursuing research at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, whilst on leave from the Flinders University of South Australia. His main interests are in plasma theory and hydrodynamics.

Mr K.A. BROUGHAN joined the department as Lecturer. He arrived from Columbia University where he was pursuing research, his main interest being in algebra and topology. Mr Broughan is a graduate of the University of Auckland and Columbia University in New York.

Mr P. BRAUN was awarded the M.Phil. degree and is now work­ing towards the D.Phil. in analytic number theory, with emphasis on the Riemann Zeta function.

PALMERSTON NORTH

Massey University of Manawatu

Mr M.R. CARTER joins the department in August on the pure mathematics side. His education and career have been at the University of the Witwatersrand and his main interests are in mathematical logic and mathematics education.

Mr R.W. DORAN, who joined the department in January, went from Canterbury to take a M.S. degree in computer science at Stanford University. Subsequently he lectured at City University, London, and was involved in curriculum development for the honours course in computer science.

It is interesting to note that Mr Doran (with Mr Joyce and Dr Weir) is the third member of the 1964 graduating class at Canterbury to join the department. With Mr Halford, we now have four Canterbury graduates on the staff - a change from the early days of the department when recruitment was largely from Victoria.

Mr W.D. HALFORD made good use of his sabbatical year at the University of Toronto. Papers presented were: 'Lyra's geometry and cosmology' - Ontario Mathematics Meeting; 'Cosmology on a modified Riemannian manifold' - Canadian Mathematical Coigress. Papers published were: 'On the relativistic nature of Ne\/tonian mechanics' - Amer.J.Phys. 3£ (1971), 114 - 115; 'Cosmological theory based on Lyra's geometry' - Austral.J.Phys. 23 (1S70),863 - 869.

Mr P.B. GIBBONS was one of the first two students to graduate with first class honours in mathematics from this department.He has returned as a junior lecturer and to further his studies in computer science. He will present a thesis for a M.Sc. in computer science in 1972.

WELLINGTON

Victoria University

Mr W.G. MALCOLM did sterling work in his role of convenor of the 6th N.Z. Mathematics Colloquium. Those who attended will agree.

Emeritus Professor J.T. CAMPBELL emerged from Nelson to attend the Colloquim and to hear Dr R. BELLMAN in whose work he has been especially interested.

Mr K. KEANE, the Victoria University Information Officer, though not a member of the .Mathematics Department, graduated in mathematics from Canterbury University before embarking on a journalistic career.. He was the public relations officer of the Colloquium.

Three senior lecturers and one Lecturer have been on sabbatical leave. Dr J.F. HARPER has now returned from Imperial College, London, where he continued his work on the motion of drops and bubbles and Mr J. HOE has returned from the University of Paris where he worked on a 14th century Chinese algebraic text, re­discovered in 1802. Dr L.C. JOHNSON is at the University of Adelaide doing work on the foundations of quantum theory and Dr G.C. WAKE is at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford continuing his theoretical work on boundary value problems with applications to combustion problems.

Mrs Megan BONDY, who after graduating from this University went secondary teaching and then returned to do an honours

degree, has taken up an appointment as junior lecturer.

Mr R.I. GOLDBLATT, an honours graduate of this University, has taken up an appointment as junior lecturer. His interests are in formal and mathematic logic and in the foundations of mathematics.

Mr D.A. RHOADES, an honours graduate of this University, has taken up an appointment as junior lecturer but will leave in September to study stochastic control theory at the University of Minnesota.

Mr B.W. McENNIS, an honours graduate of this University, has taken up an appointment as junior lecturer but will leave in September to study algebra at the University of Toronto.

Professor D.VERE-JONES is to pay a short visit to the U.S.A. in August where he will be attending a conference on stochastic point processes in New York and the International Statistical Institute's conference in Washington.

Department of Agriculture, Biometrics Section

Mr N.R. COX joined the Ruakura Section in January 1971, graduating from Auckland. His special interest is in model building for systems analysis.

Miss D.L. DAULTON joined in February 1971, graduating from Auckland.

Professor G.H. JOWETT has been appointed resident Biometrician at the Invermay Research Station, Mosgiel, and will take up his post early in 1972.

Mr P.C. LYNESS resigned recently to take up a position in the E.D .P . Section of the Otago Hospital Board.

Mr D.A. WILSON joined in February 1971, graduating from Auckland.

Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Applied Mathematics Division.

Mr D. ABDULLAH is visiting from Indonesia for a year and working with the Software section.

Mrs S. BROOKES, a graduate in mathematics from Auckland and Victoria, and who also holds a Library Diploma, has joined the Software section. Her special interest is in information re­trieval .

Mr L.M. CASEY, recently graduated from Auckland, has joined the Software section.

Dr R.B. DAVIES is visiting the University of CalifomrLa at Berkeley for the summer session. In August he will be attending the conference on stochastic point processes in New York, and the International Statistical Institute's conference in Washing­ton.

Mr G.E. DICKINSON has rejoined the staff after some years in the commercial world, both in New Zealand and overseas. His interests are in applied statistics, operational research, and software.

Mr J.E. DRUMMOND, a Reader in Applied Mathematics at Australian National University, is visiting the Division for a year, working in the Mathematical Physics section.

Mr R.M. MOORHOUSE, a graduate from Canterbury, has joined the Statistics section.

Mr T.J. SMIT of the Statistics section has resigned to take up a position with an insurance company.

Miss KAY WATSON, recently graduated from Canterbury in both mathematics and economics, has joined the Operational Research section.

Mr A.G. WILSON of the Software section has resigned to join Burroughs Ltd.

Mr YASUO YAGYU, an electronics engineer from Japan, is visiting the Operational Research section for two years, working on trans­port modelling.

CHRISTCHURCH

University of Canterbury

Dr R.M. HARDING will retire from the Mathematics Department, in which she has taught for 18 years, at the end of this year.

Her outstanding work in teaching and directing the very large class in first year pure mathematics and in engineering mathe­matics will be remembered with respect and affection, not just by her colleagues, but also by a large body of ex-pupils in this country and throughout South-East Asia.

Dr PETER WAYLEN has joined the Department as a lecturer. His field is general relativity, and he comes to Canterbury from a fellowship at the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy at Cambridge.

Dr P.J. BRYANT leaves shortly to take eight months study leave. He will be based at the Research Institute in Fluid Mechanics at the University of Essex. En route he will present a paper on 'Model equations for large amplitude water wave propagation' at the Biennial Fluid Mechanics Conference at Rynia, Poland.

Two members of the Mathematics Department of the University of Canterbury contributed papers to the Annual meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society held in May at the University of Adelaide. Dr R.L. KRUSE, read a paper on 'Identities satisfied by a finite ring,' and Mr P.E. RENAUD a paper on 'Amenable semi­groups and ergodic theory'.

Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Applied Mathematics Division

Mr A.R. WALLACE from the Department of Agriculture has joined the Division's sub-station at Lincoln. His interests are in the design and analysis of experiments.

DUNEDIN

Otago University

Professor L.M. MILNE-THOMSON has been a Visiting Professor since February. He is well known for his publications in many fields but particularly for his now classical book on hydro­dynamics .

Professor G.A.F. SEBER of the University of Auckland has accepted a professorship and will be Director of the Biometrics Unit. This will be a unit linked to the Mathematics Department but with the channelling of biometrical consultation and research as its primary activity.

Dr H.J. EFINGER has been appointed to a senior lectureship.He arrived in Dunedin in October 1970 initially as a Post-Doctoral- Fellow. Dr Efinger has published widely in mathematical physics# particularly field theory.

Dr J.H. HARRIS arrived from the Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, in February to take up a senior lectureship. Dr Harris began his career in applied mathematics but is now publish­ing in logic and the foundations of mathematics.

Dr H. LEVY arrived in August 1970 to take up a lectureship.He was formerly at the University of Surrey, and his main interest is in relativity.

Dr J. CLARK arrived in September 1970 to take up a lectureship. His doctoral work was carried out in Aberdeen and Copenhagen and his interests are in ring theory and homological algebra.

Dr J.S.N. ELVEY arrived in May to take up a lectureship. He was formerly employed by the BBC and the Open University. His doctorate was in statistical mechanics but his present interests are in analysis.

Dr A. HUITSON has been appointed to a senior lectureship and is expected to arrive during the winter term. His book 'Analysis of Variance' is well known, and he has had statistical and opera­tional research experience in industry and the civil service as well as in university work.

Dr G.C. JAIN has been appointed to a senior lectureship.He is at present in Canada but is expected in Dunedin during the winter term. He has published extensively in statistics.

NEWS ITEMS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Visitors from Overseas

Dr RICHARD BELLMAN, professor of Mathematics, Electrical Engineering and Medicine at the University of Southern California, has just completed a month long visit to New Zealand, at the_ invitation of the sixth New Zealand Mathematics Colloquium Commi­ttee. The visit was sponsored by the Fulbright distinguished visitor programme, the Vice Chancellors Committee, the New Zealand Electricity Department and the D.S.I.R.
