the German Christmas Market in Birmingham on

forget the Church Christmas Bazaar on Saturday

find that little ‘different’ something that is

perfect for a good friend or relative.

A new group is hoping to get established in the

village – the Mother’s Union Mothers Active – to

give support to local parents, for both the good

times and the bad times. See page 10 for more

information and contact details.

As usual there is a variety of events scheduled

for this month, pretty much something for

everyone, and it is this diversity that keeps our

community happy and thriving.

Best Wishes

Alison, David, Karen & Steve.

From the Editors

With the first frosts upon us, the village smells

of wood smoke in the evenings and oil tankers

are a regular sight in the daytime as we all

baton down the hatches and try to get used to

the chillier weather.

Autumn got off to a magnificent start with

another hugely successful Harvest Fair and our

thanks go to everyone who contributes their

time and efforts behind the scenes all year

round to ensure this event raises much needed

funds for local groups and societies.

So now it is time to get the woolly gloves and

scarves out ready for the Bonfire Night

celebrations, but please remember to keep your

pets indoors, safe and sound.

Of course some of us are starting to make a

few early plans for Christmas with one or two

shopping opportunities in November – the

WRBL still have a few spaces for their trip to

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

The staff and children of

Smarties would like to thank the

kind patrons of the village who generously

donated three lovely filing cabinets between

them in response to our plea last month. We are

now able to house our files and confidential data

NEWS FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL The full PC meets on the second Monday of the month in the Cricket Pavilion at 7.30pm.

The meeting is listed every month in the Village Post Office window, on the Notice

Board at the Recreation Ground, and in Odsey near the station.

A copy of the full minutes from Council Meetings may be obtained by contacting the

Parish Clerk, Sally Walmesley, Redwood Lodge, South Street, Litlington, Royston

SG8 0QR. Telephone 01763 852137 or e-mail [email protected]. The minutes can also be

viewed on the Steeple Morden Village Website www.steeplemorden.org and at the Village Post Office.

Discussion on agenda items at the October PC meeting included the following:

• County Cllr Linda Oliver reported on a recent meeting about the Odsey Car Park. The project is progressing

slowly (but surely) with Cambs. Council being interested in investing in an 80 car capacity facility. A business

case is being developed for review after which further decisions will be made.

• Cllr John Jarman reported that the Harvest Fair was, once again, a very successful event and whilst takings

were down a little on the day, sponsorship had meant that the finances were similar to previous years with almost

£3,000 profit.

• The recent sale of 2 parcels of land in the village was briefly discussed with confirmation that the 2 plots had

been bought by parishioners.

• The topic of “useful numbers” in the Parish Newsletter was debated - local useful numbers are on the village

website and more general numbers are published in the back of The Listing. It was agreed that a note to this

effect would be added to the Village Newsletter.

• When asked District Cllr Cicely Murfitt reported that the Affordable Housing Project on Ashwell Road was

still intended to go ahead but bigger schemes in other Parishes were being dealt with first.

• County Cllr Linda Oliver gave her report which included: new non-emergency phone number for the police,

recycling at Thriplow now including rigid plastic, various warnings from trading standards (fraudulent traders

targeting older people, solar panel salespeople and fake designer clothing), a family history help session on 15th

Dec (http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/libraries/) and future transport (bus 127 timetable:

http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/transport/around/buses/atoz.htm?R=CHA+127)

• On the planning front, an agent working on behalf of the Horse and Groom on the A505 has requested to

attend the December PC meeting to present their plans. The PC agreed to this request.

• Cllr Tony Turner read a short report from our PSCO detailing a number of thefts in the area. The PCSO asked

that they are on the lookout for the occupants of a Silver/Grey BMW to question.

• Cllr Angus Alexander relayed that there is interest from a team in planning an event based on the Queen’s

Golden Jubilee for 2012. The PC is also interested in hearing from parishioners who would be willing to help

organise future Cowslip Days.

MOBILE LIBRARY The Mobile Library stops in the

village every month on a

Wednesday.

It stops at Russell Close between

10.10am and 10.55am.

The calling date for November is:

Wednesday 2nd November 2011.

TOMBOLA We are looking for items for our Tombola at

the Steeple Morden Christmas Fayre, to be

held on Saturday 26th November in the

school. Any unwanted items i.e. gifts,

smellies, cuddly toys, jewellery, ornaments,

etc. would be welcome.

If you can help, please contact Janice

Comerford, 6 Bogs Gap Lane on 01763

852808 who would be happy to collect from

you at your convenience.

Reminders to dog owners

The PC has again received a number of reports of dog fouling on and around the

recreation ground. Please clear up after your dog and use the dog bins provided.

Whilst you are not obliged to have your dog on a lead in public areas, you are obliged to

control it. It may be surprising to those of us who like dogs that some people don’t like

them, or are even frightened of them. Your friendly pouch bounding up to such a person

could easily make them feel very threatened to the extent of believing your dog to be

dangerous and involving the police.

Dog Mess From a parishioner:

There seems to be an increase in the amount of dog

mess left on pathways and green areas in the village.

Would all dog owners/dog walkers please, PLEASE

clear up after your dogs.

Now the darker nights are coming you cannot see the

areas to avoid.

Thank you.

Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

2012 A local parishioner has suggested that the parish host

an event in 2012 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond

Jubilee.

The official celebrations are taking place on 2nd

, 3rd

, 4th and 5

th June.

Monday June 4th (a Bank Holiday) appears to be the best day to hold a

local event.

If you have any suggestions for the type of event that could be held

and/or if you would like to be involved in organising the event, we

would like to hear from you. Please contact any member of the Parish

Council, either by e-mail or phone – their contact details can be found

on page 4.

STEEPLE MORDEN CHURCH

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR in the school

SATURDAY 26 NOVEMBER - 12 Noon to 3pm

The Mordens Branch of Save The Children would like to thank everyone who came along to the Coffee Morning in September. We had a really wonderful turnout for the event, and we managed to raise over £630 on the day. We hope everyone enjoyed the cakes and lunches, as well as the good company and thank you very much for your support. There will be further opportunity to buy Christmas Cards, just look out for our details at various local events. Pat Holroyd will again be selling cards from home and will be pleased to see you at Well Cottage, High Street, Guilden Morden or can be contacted on 01763 853742

Anne Beadman 01763 853000

Good afternoon all. Following the success of the layer's "Pudsey's Party" last November, I am involved in the

organisation of a smaller event on November 18th

at "The Crown" in Litlington, to be opened by Steve Line of Radio Cambridgeshire. We already

have some acts promised, but in order to fill six and a half hours, we need many more.

What can you do? For a start you can consider what you personally would be prepared to

contribute to the evening's entertainment, secondly consider your friends and acquaintances,

is there a magician, a vent act, a singing group or individual performer who would be prepared to

help? Do you know of somebody who can play keyboard for sing-alongs and/or accompany the

musical items? Thirdly, have you got an item which could be

included in the raffle/auction, or even would you be prepared to be our "Raffle Queen" and

coordinate the items ready for the night. Finally, do come along on the night with cash in

your wallet. "Show your Spots, Let's raise Lots". Please let me know ASAP how you are prepared to

help, and thank you for reading this. RRRRob Gilbertob Gilbertob Gilbertob Gilbert

October News

Not much to report this month – we’re all busy clearing and

digging over our plots ready for the winter, with onions and garlic

being planted in the hope of an early crop in 2012.

A big thank you though must go out to all the allotmenteers who

donated time and produce to the Harvest Fair – the allotment stall

was busy all day, with the ‘Courgette Cake in a Bag’, Hay Street

lavender bags and throwing wet sponges at your friends in the

stocks being particularly popular! The stall raised a substantial

amount of money which will go towards improvements to the

communal areas of the allotments.

And if you didn’t order a copy at the Harvest Fair then contact me

for the Steeple Morden E Glut Recipe Book available as a

downloadable document for just £2.50.

Steeple Morden C of E Primary School Report – Autumn Term 2011

Another academic year has begun at school and we are delighted to welcome the new reception children and their families into our school

community. We are also happy to welcome the new children who have joined us in some of the older classes. We hope that you will all be very happy

at School and quickly feel part of a welcoming and friendly community.

We have wasted no time this term settling into our new and exciting whole school World War Two topic. Highlights have included a World

War Two dressing up day when the school was overrun with evacuees and ARP wardens! Also, we watched an informative and entertaining

performance entitled ‘During the War’ by a visiting theatre company. It was easy to see how much the children valued this experience as you could

have heard a pin drop in the hall during the production. We were lucky enough to be visited by some members of the local community who shared

their first hand experiences of the war with the children. Thank you once again for giving your time so freely.

In early October the children and many parents and carers visited the Church to celebrate Harvest Festival. It was good to have the

opportunity to come together and give thanks for such an abundance of rich produce.

On the 5th of November the PTA will hold its annual Bonfire Night and Firework Display. Tickets are available from Steeple Morden and

Litlington Post Offices and the school. The fireworks are always beautiful, and there will be hot soup and good company available! The money raised

by this event will be put towards the continued redevelopment of the teaching kitchen at School. If anyone has a spare hour or two the PTA are

always looking for new members to spread the workload for the various events that it organises. Please contact [email protected]

for more information if you are able to help.

For your information our chosen charities for this year are Great Ormond Street Hospital, Red Cross Japan and Rebecca’s Rainbow (a

children’s heart charity). Throughout the year our school community will work hard to raise as much money as possible for these worthy causes.

For lots more information about our school please visit our website: http://www.steeplemorden.cambs.sch.uk

We wish them all the success for the new season! If racket sport’s not really your thing, then we have a varied exercise programme to help reduce your waistline, not your bank balance, with prices as low as £4 per session or £29 monthly membership. Run by fully qualified and experienced instructors, classes range from high impact sessions such as Circuit training to relaxing sessions like Yoga.
