EAA 501’s 16th ANNUAL Fly-INby Harry Barker

The “Greatest Little Fly-In on the East Coast” took place at the WarwickAerodrome on Sun, May 18, 2003. This event occurred in the middle of a4-day window of beautiful weather which was sandwiched in by one weekof cold, rainy & windy weather at each end.

The beautifully prepared country airport was visited by about 100 aircraftcoming from five states; CT(5), MA(2), NJ(42), NY(39), and PA(11). Pilotsand passengers had a great time renewing old acquaintances and makingnew ones. A team of 42 volunteers kept everything running smoothly despite the intermittentgusty winds which constantly changed direction.

The great physical appearance of the airfield was achieved by a volunteer team led by DaveMacMillan including Artie Van Riper, Walter Rechsteiner, Marty Monchak, and Harry Barker.

At 4:30 PM, the flying field was stripped of all it’s equipment and the small country airport wasreturned to it’s pristine condition, thus the ending of another successful “Old Country Fly-In”.

Greenwood Lake Airport.

GREEN EAGLESby Bill Anderes

On May 3, 2003, nine intrepid Young Eagles took to the skiesover Greenwood Lake airport in West Milford, NJ, courtesy ofChapter 501. Not unusual one might say, since Chapter 501flies Young Eagles twice a year at its home base at LincolnPark, NJ. But these youngsters were special in that they wereresidents of Green Residential Community Home in Ringwood,NJ.

Green RCH is one of 21 homes administered by the New JerseyJuvenile Justice Commission throughout the State. Located inrural Passaic County on the grounds of Ringwood State Park,Green RCH is a facil ity for younger male juvenile offendersbetween the ages of 13 and 16.

Jim Doone, Super intendent of the facility explains,“the program’s goal is to provide a safe, secure, and structur edenvironment where program participants can learn to modifytheir behaviors and reactions. The staff, acting as role models, instill a sense of esprit de corps, teach realistic goal setting andpromote responsible decision making. The kids learn to adaptto change, accept accountabili ty and develop self-discipline. Inaddition to attending formal school classes every day, theyoungsters perform community service work on the grounds ofRingwood State Park , Ringwood Manor and Skylands Manor. They also provide assistance to the municipal government, ambulance corps, fire department, a local battered women’sshelter and maintain one of the town’s main roads through theAdopt-A-Road Program. Through a contract with thePlaywright’s Theater of New Jersey, the youngsters areinstructed in the writing and performance of on e-act playswhich are presented at the Playwright’s Theater in Madison,NJ.”

Last fall, Doone and 501 Secretary Dick Wedemeyer crossedpaths at a social function. After hearing Wedemeyer’s YoungEagles sales pitch, Doone was eager to find a way to participatein the program. Not only would the youngsters be introduced tothe thrill of flying, but Doone envisioned using the program as

an incentive for self-improvement and to enhance goalaccomplishment. Working through the Juvenile JusticeCommission, Doone was able to obtain State acceptance ofYoung Eagles as an approved activity. Planning continued

wi th Chapte r 501throughout the winter, culminating in the May3rd event. The Gr eenwoodLake airport provided aconvenient location inthat it is only 5 milesfrom the Green RCHfacility. The day before,Bill Anderes, Chapter 501Y o u n g E a g l e sCoordinator, conducted aground school session fort h e e n t h u s i a s t i cparticipan ts. Anderessaid, “When one of thekids is able to explainBernouli’s Principle to theother kids, you know youhave an enthusiasticbunch.!”Wedemeyer, Chapter 501

Treasurer, provided the rides in his C-172 the next day.Chapter members Linda Giordano, Gene Friedemann, DonProvost and Howie Burch also graciously helped out.

With the average residency of the youngsters being between 6to 12 months, it is expected that Green RCH will participate inChapter 501’s Young Eagles Program on a regular basis in thefuture. To further enhance cooperation between Young Eaglesand the Juvenile facilities, contact information for the other 20facilities has been sent to the appropriate EAA Chaptersthroughout the State and visa-versa.

The lesson learned---there are Young Eagles out there in thosenooks and crannies, especially youths who may need a helpinghand. As far as nine eager boys in Ringwood, NJ go, colorthem GREEN!
