Immediate needs:-
Provision of Water Storage facilities: Most assessed water points in Jowhar villages (schools and MCH centers) and sub-villages of Jowhar district mostly lack both communal and household water storage facility. The programme will enhance water safety through rehabilitation of water storage facilities.
Water safety: Most water sources have been depleted and access to clean water is not a guarantee in most parts of target site the main town in Jowhar district. The project will ensure that water delivered for use by HH based population is chlorinated and at household level water purification chemicals are availed. Intensive campaigns need to be done in order to help hygiene promotion and improve on health.
Borehole rehabilitation: The conflict between nomadic population and Host communities at village level often arises from lack of reciprocate support to host communities/areas where the main strategic boreholes are located. The project will service the engine sets and replace corroded draw pipes, screens and submersible pumps. Rehabilitation will also involve renovation of the shallows infrastructure through rehabilitations.
Project Impact and Sustainability
The project will have an immense impact on the lives of many households’ individuals which will transform the current gap in WASH. The project is designed in increasing access to clean drinking water that will contributing to the reducing factors of AWD/Cholera and other water borne diseases while in the same vain it will improve the sanitation status of the targeted individuals in Jowhar district, complimented by hygiene promotion session through use if IEC materials and child friendly hygiene message poster hence the behavioral changes in terms of personal hygiene promotion and practice will be improved.
Sustainability is key to IIDOOR intervention with high probability of continued long term benefits. Continuation of the project is achieved through the local community and key stakeholder involvement into the project initial design and implementation process. In the course of the project execution WMC (WES committees and O&M committees) will be trained for the effective management of rehabilitated strategic water. The involvement of female member into the WMC will also balance the decision making and management of the water sources.
The project will also focus on establishing a strong local network that will support and take overall responsibility of the project sustainability through signing MoU at the end of the project period.
