Natural slate roofs, slate stone cladding, 55-degree pointed gables and arched walkways are features of the design. The company specialises in upmarket and luxury residential projects.

ituated on the Val de Vie golf and polo estate in Paarl – at 1 000ha, the largest estate of its kind on the continent – Valentia Manor is a 27ha estate all on

its own, home to renier Swart of Val de Vie construction and his family.

Some of the fine features of the estate include the world-renowned ryk Neethling Swimming Academy, a world-class gymnasium, tennis courts and academy, a fully equipped sport and leisure centre, an award-winning winemaker and cellar, preschool facilities, a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, the Polo club restaurant and black bar, and an exclusive event and conference venue.

the Swart family’s dream home took two years to construct. the project was met with many challenges, including some architectural restrictions of the estate. but despite these obstacles, Valentia

Manor was born, situated between the berg river and the picturesque cape mountains, making for unparalleled scenic vistas.

the manor house brings together european and cape Vernacular influences, a fitting combination, as the family is of Scottish and Dutch heritage. With the elegance of a French chateau, there is a wealth of space for the family and guests to enjoy.

However, Valentia is more than just a family residence. It is also a properly functioning farm with a 200-strong herd of Dormer sheep, which are kept in fully automated irrigation grazing camps. the sheep are farmed for their mutton, and more than 300 lambs are produced every year.

AbOVE: this elephant-blue slate roof covering was constructed by HP Plum roofing. the covering was laid using the Peterlo 2000 system, developed by master roofer Peter Plum. A GVe-20 ALAUN reinforced elastomeric (polymer modified bitumen) waterproofing membrane, imported from Austria, was used to form a triple layer with the slate above.

RIgHT: Window Line was tasked with designing and manufacturing a high-quality front door and frame that was elegant, and at the same time suitable for a contemporary build. the door was manufactured using selected hardwood timber with a suitable density to stand up to the harsh conditions of Val de Vie.

A walk up the double, sweeping staircase, and you will find five bedrooms, all en-suite, with a separate dressing room off the main bedroom. the master bathroom boasts heated towel rails, a double shower and marble tiling, all creating a seamless, elegant flow, and the perfect backdrop for the stand-out spa bath.

AbOVE: the brief to Interior concepts was for a luxury home with a modern, French interior, suitable for both comfortable family living and entertaining. the company opted for an underlying neutral palette with accent colours, emphasising a continuous flow, and was also responsible for sourcing the custom furniture.

bELOW: Studio Masson’s Maximum calacatta Statuario polished porcelain slabs were selected for this home. the company was responsible for the entrance hall arch and lobby feature wall, the kitchen splashbacks, and the pool lounge counter and wall cladding. All slabs come from the stylish Maximum Marmi collection.

AbOVE: established in 2015 with an “if you can visualise it, we can create it” attitude, custom Glass creations was called on to design and install the frameless showers and wine cellar in this home. the company specialises in frameless glass entrance doors, balustrades, wine cellars, sliders, partitions and showers.

bELOW: Forest Flooring was tasked with installing the 220×15/4 engineered oak flooring in this home, which was finished with a rubio Monocoat oil, in the colour Smoke 5%. In addition to flooring, the company specialises in furniture and design, and was also contracted to install the staircase and handrail.

elegant and comfortable, with only the finest fittings and finishes, the home has been built to the highest specification. A highlight is the 12-seater home theatre, which is a family favourite on rainy cape winter evenings.

A home with two kitchens is always a talking point. one is a unique old farmhouse kitchen with a wood-fired stove, while the other, the main kitchen, is timeless and spacious, with a cosy breakfast nook where the family starts the day together. >

the dining area is graceful and sophisticated, with a calming palette of pale hues providing a peaceful dining experience. the14-seater chunky timber table, surrounded by high-back chairs, ups the ante for entertaining, while a well-stocked wine cellar adds to the aura of opulence and style.

on sweltering summer days, the family refreshes in the pool, set in a lush garden with an abundance of space. the pool house is a great addition, with an area for relaxation after a swim, and even a small gym for a quick workout.

bELOW: beam Vacuum Systems cape was responsible for the installation of the beam electrolux central vacuum system. this lightweight system promotes powerful cleaning, better air quality and less noise, and is typically located in the basement or garage of the home. It is connected to convenient inlets throughout the home via vacuum tubing.

biometric access-control measures. this allows entry/exit and general movement tracking, which is an essential way of maintaining control throughout the estate.

Advanced technology was key for the family – from cutting-edge, Wi-Fi-operated irrigation systems to lightning-quick, 100 megabytes-per-second Internet access property-wide. A control4 home automation system sees to the central control of the music played in each room, the televisions, certain lighting and the air conditioning.

In terms of sustainable living, all essential items are powered by solar energy, with backup lithium batteries, and there is underfloor water heating.
