It is soon 2017, and that means you might be one more year closer to retirement. Whether you are at your very first job or wrap-ping up a successful career, there are always new things to learn about when it comes to saving for the future. So why not make retirement planning part of your New Year’s resolution!
Putting money in a high yield savings account (if you can find one) is always smart,
but you can do even more. The U.S. Department of the Trea-sury now offers a retirement savings option called myRA. There is no minimum to open the account, you can contribute

I hope that your employer chips in a little. An employer-sponsored retirement plan or 401(k) can be a useful way to set aside funds for retirement, especially if your employer of-fers matching funds on what you invest. If you do not work for an employer that offers this type of plan, there are many other plans designed to help you save for retirement.
From solo 401(k)s to tradi-
tional and Roth IRAs, there are programs designed to fit a multi-tude of budgets. The earlier you start to save, the more funds you will have ready for retirement.
As always, there is Social Security, funded by taxes you pay while you work. To get estimates of future benefits and check your earnings record for accuracy, you can create a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.
Along with giving up bad habits, this New Year start a good habit that can make a lasting, positive change.

Commission(Continued from page 1)it’s requested for health depart-ments to be no-smoking zones to protect customers from sec-ondhand smoke. The department can usually set up a smoking area 50 feet away from the building to allow smokers to still smoke away from where customers may be walking.
However, at the environmental health offices in the old Armory building on East Central Avenue,
space is at a premium and there isn’t a 50-foot clearance on all sides with room to have a smoking area, Edwards said. The front side ends in a busy road, two other sides are blocked by fencing and the fourth side is a parking lot, mak-ing it impossible to give smokers a safe place outdoors and 50 feet away from the office building where they can still smoke.
Due to the safety issue and geography making it impossible
to comply with the regulation, the commissioners unanimously voted to deny the policy change.
The Health Department does not have jurisdiction over county buildings to implement smoking policies, but under state law, local governments have the authority to restrict smoking in public places.
The commissioners also ap-proved adjusting an assistant in the public buildings to work full
time to help Public Buildings Director James Tedder. The board further approved a bid of $3,581 to buy surplus property located at 350 Locust Lane.
Additionally, local pastor Rev. Al Anderson appeared before the board and asked to be placed on the agenda for January to discuss a proposal to create a homeless shelter in Hoke County.
The board did not hold a closed session and adjourned.
I shopped the sheriffA child checks a possible present (bottom) at Walmart Monday as Hoke Sheriff Hubert Peterkin and his elves, er, deputies, took him and others shopping for Christmas. They called it “Shop With the Sheriff.” Lots of people took part (top). This year, the department not only donated toys to the kids but also took Santa along.
