The songs chosen are from Cohen’s 1960s albums through to his 2001 release ‘Ten New Songs’. Christine was first drawn to Cohen at the age of ten after hearing “You Know Who I Am” and despite her tender years, she immediately fell under the spell of his hypnotic tones. In her own songwriting, Christine Tobin specializes in idiosyncratic, highly musical poetic vignettes with a strong sense of story, so it's no surprise she weaves such magic with the profound, sensual and mysterious songs of Cohen. The Irish-born, UK-based singer-songwriter and composer, has carved out a niche for herself as one of the UK’s most richly expressive and original voices. A series of sublime albums have showcased her poetic original material and compelling rich voice. In 2008 she was named Best Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards and ‘Tapestry Unravelled’ (2010) received rave reviews and drew attention to her outstanding ability as interpreter. In 2012 she won a British Composer Award for ‘Sailing to Byzantium’, her settings of poems by W.B. Yeats. Her latest show ‘A Thousand Kisses Deep’ won a prestigious Herald Angel Award at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival "Christine Tobin is inspiring on her own material. But she is in a class of her own singing Leonard Cohen.” - The Guardian Personnel: Christine Tobin (vocals), Phil Robson (guitars), Huw Warren (accordion), Dave Whitford (double bass), Adriano Adewale (percussion), Special guests: Gwilym Simcock (piano), Nick Smart (trumpet) Tracks: 1. JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 17/3/2014

Brian Charette The Question That Drives Us

SCCD31784 716043178421 CD STEEPLECHASE £8.49 JAZZ The second release by Brian Charette’s unique, reed-based sextet, which features the tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm and clarinettist John Ellis. They perform a set of all original compositions by Charette, plus a version of “Moose the Mooche” by Charlie Parker. Brian Charette’s Organ Sextet released their first album ‘Music for Organ Sextette’ (SCCD31731) in 2012 to a critical and public acclaim. Dan Bilawsky noted in All About Jazz: “Charette weaves a unique and gripping aural tapestry together with a mélange of woodwinds serving as the thread. He channels his energy into creating constructs that benefit from the blending of multiple voices...Music For Organ Sextette is an anomaly in the world of organ-centric jazz...Charette challenges the status quo with this one and winds up the victor in every way.” Personnel: Brian Charette (Hammond B3 organ), Itai Kriss (flute), Mike Dirubbo (alto saxophone), Joel Frahm (tenor saxophone), John Ellis (bass clarinet), Jochen Rueckert (drums) Tracks: Blazinec / The Question That Drives Us / Medium Up / Answer Me / Labor Day / Svichkova / 5th Base / #9 / Denge Merenge / I Came So Far To See You / Moose the Mooche

Pierre Dorge & New Jungle Orchestra

Tjak Tjaka Tchicai

SCCD31777 716043177721 CD STEEPLECHASE £8.49 JAZZ ‘Tjak Tjaka Tchicai’ is dedicated to the celebrated Danish jazz saxophonist and composer John Tchicai, who played a key role in the musical development of fellow-Dane Pierre Dørge. Alongside his orchestra, Dørge performs a mixture of original compositions by himself and bandmates, plus John Tchicai’s “Largo Lapidarius.” Pierre Dørge’s New Jungle Orchestra has been around since 1980, albeit with some changes in the crew. They play “world music” with a mixture of jazz, Asian, African and European music - and general madness - they create their own Dadaistic universe, which gives the audience a unique and extraordinary experience. “Danish composer-guitarist Pierre Dørge, like Charles Mingus before him, possesses an antic ardor for the striking horn voicings and ruminative soundscapes of Duke Ellington...The other signature trait that Dørge’s New Jungle Orchestra semi-big bands have displayed over their 30-plus years of existence is an ability to unleash a cosmopolitan pinwheel of moods, tones and textures.” - JazzTimes Personnel: Pierre Dørge (guitar, conductor), Gunnar Halle (trumpet), Morten Carlsen (taragot, tenor saxophone), Jakob Mygind (tenor and soprano saxophone), Anders Banke (tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet), Kenneth Agerholm (trombone), Irene Becker (piano, synthesizer), Thommy Andersson (bass), Ayi Solomon (congas, percussion), Martin Andersen (drums, cajón) Tracks: How is the Sunsetrise Up There? / A Rose for Laurent / Dualities / Mozombo / A Rufous Mot Mot / Jungle Sketches / Tjak Tjaka Tchicai / Largo Lapidarius / Kera Dorong / Autobahn Tchicai Zwei / Lucianus in Congo

JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 17/3/2014

Trio Riot Trio Riot

FP015 5052442005186 CD EFPI RECORDS £7.99 JAZZ Hard-hitting Anglo-Scandinavian outfit Trio Riot was formed in Helsinki in 2009. Stylistically, the band relate their sense of energy to the 1980s British punk scene, with an approach to sound inspired by Ornette Coleman and a compositional style frequently drawing inspiration from 20th century contemporary music. Amazingly, Trio Riot have played five tours in the UK in the last two years. As an international group playing ‘fringe’ music in a country that notoriously under-supports the arts, this should be impossible! But the band’s punk and DIY approach to their music is what has driven them forward. It's also this approach that allows them to connect so directly with audiences from many different music scenes. Their commitment to the music and their spontaneous and complex group interaction is at the forefront of an energetic and intriguing sound. Personnel: Mette Rasmussen (alto saxophone), Sam Andreae (tenor saxophone), David Meier (drums) Tracks: 3 / Lala-Lala / Rondeau / I'm So Glad It Wasn't Me / Candid / Bartstock / Duo / Guru / Dadadadadadada / 31 / Disorder / The Last Hurrah Live dates: 24th March - Vortex, London 25th March - Schmazz, Newcastle 27th March - Free Range, Cantebury Jazzwise ‘Taking Off’ feature in March issue with album review 4 star review published on Marlbank website

With ‘After Blue’, her most daring and revealing project to date, Sutton puts her own unique stamp on familiar Mitchell tunes going back to 1969’s ‘Both Sides Now’ and 1970’s ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ and including more recent numbers like 1979’s ‘The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines’ and 1982’s jivey ‘Be Cool,’ along with Joni’s haunting take on the standard “Don’t Go to Strangers” from her 2000 orchestral album, ‘Both Sides Now’. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 24/3/2014

Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Anja Lechner & Amsterdam Sinfonietta

Tigran Mansurian: Quasi parlando

4810667 028948106677 CD ECM NEW SERIES £9.49 CLASSICAL Quasi Parlando is an important addition to ECM’s documentation of the work of Tigran Mansurian, an often breathtaking account of highly original contemporary chamber orchestra music. Issued in the wake of his 75th birthday, the album presents four works for soloists and strings, and marks the ECM debut of the Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, winner of the 2013 Gramophone Awards ‘Record of the Year’.

It opens with the Armenian composer’s fiercely-concentrated Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and String Orchestra, and proceeds to new music performed by its dedicatees: the lyrical Romance, dedicated to Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and the intensely expressive Quasi Parlando, dedicated to German cellist Anja Lechner. Both are world premiere recordings, as is the Violin Concerto No 2, subtitled Four Serious Songs, which concludes the programme. Throughout, the soloists deliver committed performances, as does the Amsterdam Sinfonietta under the direction of Candida Thompson.

In terms of textural density, Mansurian’s music has seen some changes in the 30 years that separate the composing of the Double Concerto and the Four Serious Songs, but his aesthetic stance has been consistent, both works sharing an immediacy of expression and rigorous creative will. At the same time, the composer encourages a degree of creative freedom from his music’s interpreters: “What is important is what the music needs, not what I need”, he said in a talk at the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, immediately before the recording of these pieces in October 2012.

Tigran Mansurian’s music was first heard on ECM with the recording Hayren (released in 2003), where his pieces were brought together with music of his great formative influence, the ethnologist, composer and priest, Komitas. Subsequent Mansurian recordings include Monodia (4727842), the String Quartets (476 3052), and the choral album Ars Poetica (4763070).

Ursula Oppens & Bruce Brubaker

Meredith Monk: Piano Songs

4810712 028948107124 CD ECM NEW SERIES £9.49 CLASSICAL Celebrating Meredith Monk as composer, these Piano Songs present a world at once playful and earnest. Written or derived from work composed between 1971 and 2006, the pieces inhabit Monk’s unique universe, as played by two of new music’s most distinguished interpreters, American pianists Ursula Oppens and Bruce Brubaker. These pieces are ‘songs’ because they have strong roots in Monk’s pieces for voice, and because they are direct, specific, and imagistic. Meredith Monk on composing for two pianos: “I delved into different relationships and possibilities between them; material passed back and forth, dialogues, interlocking phrases, shifts of figure and ground. In some pieces, I emphasized the individuality of each piano, writing for one player as the ‘singer’, the other as the ‘accompaniment’; in other pieces I wanted the two pianos to make one large sound.” She continues: “Directness, purity, asymmetry, and above all transparency have always been important to me. The surface of the music is seemingly simple but the intricacy of detail and the combination of restraint and expressivity challenge the performer. Every gesture is exposed and clear.” Always drawn to 20th century music, particularly Mompou, Satie and Bartók, Meredith Monk began writing short piano studies in high school and college. After many years of concentrating on composing music for unaccompanied voice and then voice and organ, she went back to the piano with ‘Paris’ in 1972. Thereafter, she began writing short piano pieces, each a world with its own topography, texture and mood. Four solo pieces are included on this album but the majority, including ‘Ellis Island’, are for two pianos. Personnel: Ursula Oppens (piano), Bruce Brubaker (piano) Tracks: 1. Obsolete Objects (1996) 2. Ellis Island (1981) 3. Folkdance (1996) 4. Urban march (shadow) (2001) 5. Tower (1971) 6. Paris (1972) 7. Railroad (Travel Song) (1981) 8. Parlour Games (1988) 9. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 24/3/2014

John Holloway

Pavans and Fantasies from the Age of Dowland

4810430 028948104307 CD ECM NEW SERIES £9.49 CLASSICAL In this remarkable recording, baroque violinist John Holloway creates a programme around the Lachrimae Pavans by John Dowland. Threaded between Dowland’s masterpieces are works of other major composers of his era - Henry Purcell, William Lawes, John Jenkins, Thomas Morley and Matthew Locke. In bringing together these pieces of strongly contrasting colour and character Holloway and his musicians give a vivid sense of the great flowering of consort music which took place in England in the 17th century. John Dowland’s Lachrimae Pavans is considered one of the greatest works in the canon of English chamber music. Based upon his famous song “Flow My Teares”, the seven pavans - Seaven Teares, as Dowland called them - present an extraordinary exploration of the contrapuntal and harmonic possibilities offered by the theme. Believing the composer offered possibility of performance by five string players without lute, Holloway and company play Dowland’s pavans with the instrumentation of four violas and bass violin. As Holloway puts it: “As has been said of Dowland, his greatest works are inspired by a deeply felt tragic concept of life, and a preoccupation with tears, sin, darkness and death. With that in mind, this choice of instruments (rather than transposing the music into a higher key) made itself.” One of the most experienced concertmasters in the ‘Early Music’ world, John Holloway has led orchestras for such diverse directors as William Christie, Christopher Hogwood, Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman, Jean-Claude Malgoire, Nicholas McGegan, and was for many years leader of Roger Norrington’s London Classical Players and Andrew Parrott’s Taverner Players. In 1999 he was appointed Professor of Violin (modern and baroque) and Chamber Music at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden. Since 1997 he has made a number of acclaimed recordings for ECM New Series, including Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Violin solo, Biber, Schmelzer, Muffat, Leclair, Castello and others. Personnel: John Holloway (violin, viola), Monika Baer (violin, viola), Renate Steinmann (violin), Susanna Hefti (viola), Martin Zeller (bass violin) Tracks: 1. John Dowland: Lachrimæ Antiquæ 2. Joyce Yang

Wild Dreams - Bartók, Hindemith, Rachmaninov, Schumann & Wild

AV2261 822252226126 CD AVIE £8.49 CLASSICAL On ‘Wild Dreams’, pianist Joyce Yang weaves together a sequence of dream-inspired pieces by Rachmaninov, Hindemith, Schumann and transcriptions by Earl Wild, with nocturnal works by Bartok and Schumann. Pianist Joyce Yang follows her critically acclaimed AVIE debut, ‘Collage’ (AV2229), with the equally imaginative ‘Wild Dreams’, inspired by a musical dream sequence. Joyce explains, “In our dreams, remote parts of our psyches come forth to create their own worlds and realities. Improbable scenarios intertwine. Characters normally divided by time and space mingle in our imaginations. In this subconscious world there are no boundaries or rules, and spontaneity trumps logic. Each piece on Wild Dreams defies gravity, and the sense of time and space is redefined in the spontaneity of performance.” Joyce interweaves dream-inspired pieces such as Earl Wild’s transcription of Rachmaninov’s Dreams, Hindemith’s In Einer Nacht and Schumann’s Traumes Wirren, with the nocturnal Night Music by Bartók and Schumann’s In der Nacht. The climax of the programme is Rachmaninov’s passionate Second Piano Sonata, performed with bravado. Critical acclaim for Joyce Yang: “Imaginative programming...beautifully atmospheric playing.” - Gramophone “The opening Des Abends depicted dreamy colours, reminiscent of a slowly rotating kaleidoscope, and was followed by a passionate and exuberant reading of Aufschwung...Combined with her masterfully dexterous fingers, inner textures were brought out clearly.” - San Francisco Classical Voice Tracks: Sergei Rachmaninov (arr. Marina Piccinini

Paganini: 24 Caprices (arr. Piccinini)

AV2284 822252228427 CD2 AVIE £12.74 CLASSICAL Flautist Marina Piccinini astounds with her virtuosity in her own arrangements for Paganini's devilishly difficult 24 Capricci. Flautist Marina Piccinini relishes tradition with a twist. Having recorded J. S. Bach’s Flute Sonatas with the Brasil Guitar Duo - the first ever recording using this combination of instruments (AV2196) - she astounds again with astonishing virtuosity in her own arrangements of Paganini’s notoriously difficult 24 Capricci. Piccinini matches Paganini’s vision and independence of spirit, explaining, “I was drawn to transcribe and record all the Caprices as a challenge and stimulus for my own development, a path towards pushing the envelope outside my personal comfort zone. What I discovered and fell in love with was a musical voice that demanded a far greater emotional expression through technical perfection of phrasing, flexibility of embouchure, depth of sound, breath control, digital dexterity and precise articulation.” Critical acclaim for Marina Piccinini: “Piccinini makes her own magic...Brilliant technical fluency and keen interpretive senses.” - Baltimore Sun “Splendidly recorded...evocative...the playing is first class.” - MusicWeb International “A rather wonderful musician.” - Flute Magazine 24 Caprices Op.1 (arranged by Marina Piccinini for solo flute) Disc 1: 1. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 24/3/2014

Capella de la Torre & Katharina Bauml

Piffarissimo - Instrumental Music at the Council of Constance 1414-1418

CC72631 608917263121 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICS £8.49 CLASSICAL This enterprising and innovative album by the specialist ensemble Capella de la Torre under its director Katharina Bäuml includes a selection of pieces representative of music that might have been performed at the Great Council of Constance between the years 1414 and 1418. This year marks the 600th anniversary of the start of this major historical event. In the years 1414-1418 the largest congress of the Middle Ages took place in Constance, Germany for the election of a pope. The council was set up to end the “Three-Popes Controversy”, by deposing or accepting the resignation of the remaining Papal claimants and electing Pope Martin V. The meetings were framed by church services and various celebrations that were naturally enriched with music. According to contemporary sources at least 365 instrumentalists stayed in the town during this period. However, as these sources never mention the names of specific composers whose music was performed at the Council, the programme chosen for this CD consists of a selection of sacred music, dance and popular song of the time, some of which are anonymous and others by leading musical figures. The years 2014-2018 mark the 600th anniversary of the Council of Constance, and the city is celebrating this with Europe-wide broadcasting, lectures, exhibitions, and festivals. The ensemble Capella de la Torre gathers together musicians who have made a name internationally as specialists in historically informed performance. Capella de la Torre’s aim is to perform the rich and hitherto insufficiently appreciated music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance on authentic instruments. The group’s first album for Challenge Classics, ‘Vinum et Musica’ (CC72554), was released in 2012, and earlier in 2014 it was followed by ‘Luther’s Wedding Day’ (CC72598). Personnel: Capella de la Torre, Katharina Bäuml (shawms and direction), Birgit Bahr (shawms), Hildegard Wippermann (shawm), Falko Munkwitz (sackbut and slide trumpet), Keal Couper (sackbut, slide trumpet and cowhorn), Johannes Vogt (lute), Peter A.
