O que será is a summery celebration of the joy of music-making, radiating an irresistible enthusiasm, and raising the bar for trans-idiomatic instrumental interaction. The exchanges between the musicians are frequently breathtaking. Bollani, acknowledged as one of the most prodigiously-gifted soloists of jazz, is matched every step of the way here by de Holanda. They first met on stage at a festival in Bolzano, in South Tyrol, in 2009. On that occasion they played just two pieces, by Baden Powell/Vinicius de Moreas and Egberto Gismonti, but the empathy between them was immediate and unmistakable. That meeting - which can be seen and heard on YouTube - left the players hungry for more. In 2011 they reunited for their first complete show together, a blueprint for further concerts in Brazil and Europe. Trust and improvisation are the watchwords of this duo, and the decision to record live also reflects their wish to maintain the sense of spontaneity and risk that animates the shows. Repertoire draws upon the rich heritage of South American music - including Jobim, Piazzolla, Chico Buarque, Baden Powell, Ernesto Nazareth and more, plus original compositions by the protagonists. O que será was recorded live in Antwerp in August 2012 before an audibly-delighted audience at the Jazz Middelheim Festival. Bollani’s love of Brazil is well-known. Several of his previous ECM releases, including the duos with Chick Corea (Orvietto) and Enrico Rava (The Third Man) have incorporated music of Brazilian composers. In the encounter with Hamilton de Holanda (who makes his ECM debut here) he is allied with a true representative of Brazil’s musical heritage. JAZZ NEW RELEASE - 26/8/2013

Yeahwon Shin, Aaron Parks & Rob Curto

Lua Ya

3744030 602537440306 CD ECM £9.49 JAZZ

South Korean singer Yeahwon Shin’s ECM debut, Lua ya is a gentle album of songs and lullabies, recorded in 2012 in the spacious acoustics of Mechanics Hall, near Boston. It’s a very intuitive set, shaped as Yeahwon says by “improvising, listening to our childhood memories and letting the music flow”. Shin and pianist Aaron Parks played together just once before the present recording, finding “an instant improvisational connection” which is further explored here. Accordionist Rob Curto shares with Yeahwon an affinity for Brazilian music and has collaborated with her previously (in contexts including her Latin Grammy-nominated album ‘Yeahwon’ on ArtistShare). But this ECM disc is a project beyond the idiomatic borderlines: Korean children’s songs are amongst the inspirational sources, and jazz has influenced the phrasing and imagination of all three participants, yet Lua ya seems to emerge from a place of pure music and a common reservoir of feeling. Yeahwon Shin dedicates the set to mothers and children everywhere. Born in Seoul, Yeahwon’s musical talents began to emerge on the piano at the age of five. After studying at Korea’s Dong-Duk music university, she moved to New York in 2005 to attend the New School University Jazz and Contemporary Music program. She made her debut international recording in 2009, with, amongst others, bassist Ben Street, drummer Jeff Ballard, pianist Kevin Hays, percussionist Cyro Baptista, and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. One of Yeahwon’s most cherished musical influences, popular Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti, was a special guest. Personnel: Yeahwon Shin (voice), Aaron Parks (piano), Rob Curto (accordion) Tracks: 1. Lullaby 2. Moving Clouds 3. Island Child 4. Mysteries 5. The Moonwatcher and the Child 6. The Orchard Road 7. Remembrance 8. Beads of Rain 9. A Morning Song 10. Travel Blue 11. Beads of Rain, var 12. The Orchard Road, var 13. Sunrise Promotion includes advertising in Jazzwise. WORLD NEW RELEASE - 26/8/2013

Martin Alvarado & Horacio Avilano

Guitar Tango: Mas Alla

TUGCD1074 605633007428 CD RIVERBOAT £6.70 WORLD

On ‘Guitar Tango: Mas Alla’, Martin Alvarado’s honey-sweet tenor tones lead and Horacio Avilano’s strutting guitar provides the accompaniment. The two musicians pay due respect to tango’s rich history, while gently exploring their own contemporary interpretation of the famous Latin genre. Subtle yet still brimming with passion, this is unadorned tango straight from Argentina. Martin Alvarado is a Buenos Aires-born singer who has circled the globe with his traditional tango brand. Now best known for his vocals, Alvarado also plays the guitar. Horacio Avilano has been finding his way around the frets since the age of twelve. His musicianship is bound with a deep respect for tango traditions and form. Choosing to play only by ear, his gesture and phrasing is delivered naturally and without hesitation. His style is minimalist; his fast fingers never overpowering Alvarado’s silken song. Most of the material on ‘Guitar Tango’ was recorded in one take, investing the music with a tangible sense of immediacy. Argentine tango typically revels in nostalgia, many of the song lyrics on ‘Guitar Tango’ pine for lost love, lost hope and lost time. “Solitario” is an ode to feelings of isolation and loneliness, and the duo’s stripped back arrangement of Chilean classic “Gracias A La Vida” conveys a defiant yet subtly mournful tone that is entirely appropriate for the anthemic protest song. Tracks: 1. Más Allá 2. Milonga De Corralon 3. Mujer Y Amiga 4. Solitario 5. La Ultima Cita 6. Viento Dile A La Lluvia 7. Vieja Casa 8. Tapera 9. Gracias A La Vida 10. Milonga Triste 11. Petit Bar 12. BLUES NEW RELEASE - 26/8/2013

Moreland & Arbuckle 7 Cities

TEL3432902 888072343290 CD TELARC £8.49 BLUES

For their third release on Telarc, blues group Moreland & Arbuckle enlist the production expertise of Seattle-based record producer Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Minus the Bear, Soundgarden, The Sword). The resulting ‘7 Cities’ is their best written, finest sounding and strongest performance to date. Since their beginnings in the Kansas heartland, guitarist Aaron Moreland and vocalist/harpist Dustin Arbuckle have captured the visceral spirit and raw energy of the early 20th century Delta blues and distilled it all down to a hard-driving and powerful garage-rock configuration. For ‘7 Cities’ the band is completed by new drummer Kendall Newby. The 13 track album includes nine originals and opens with “Quivira”, an area of Kansas, Moreland & Arbuckle’s home state, where the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado went on his search for Seven Cities of Gold in the 1500’s. “The song is about ascent to power and - as so often happens when people seek great wealth or power - it all crumbles, and they come down”, Arbuckle says. “That ended up being the thread for the album, right down to our version of Tears for Fears’ Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”

COUNTRY NEW RELEASE - 19/8/2013

Ron Block Walking Song

11661916702 011661916722 CD ROUNDER £8.49 COUNTRY

Guitarist and banjo player Ron Block’s third solo album sees the Union Station star move skilfully across multiple genres of acoustic music, presenting his take on Scots-Irish balladry, Appalachian fiddle tunes, bluegrass romps, singer-songwriter narratives, and, for good measure, grooving newgrass. Ron Block is probably most recognised as a member of Alison Krauss and Union Station. What is less known is that he is also a highly regarded songwriter with numerous songs appearing on Alison Krauss and Union Station releases. Other artists such as Vince Gill, Dolly Parton, Clint Black, Brad Paisley and Bill Frisell have also recorded Ron’s compositions. For ‘Walking Song’, Ron composed 11 of the 14 songs and enlisted the help of award winning poet Rebecca Reynolds for lyrics. Also assisting Ron are Union Station mates Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski on backing vocals, Jerry Douglas on dobro and Barry Bales on bass. A host of other modern bluegrass players like Mike Compton and Sam Bush lend some mandolin paying, Stuart Duncan joins on fiddle and British singer Kate Rusby adds some harmonies.

Warren Wolf Wolfgang

MAC1077 673203107724 CD MACK AVENUE £8.49 JAZZ

‘Wolfgang’ is the remarkable sophomore album, on Mack Avenue Records from vibraphonist Warren Wolf. It features two different three-man rhythm sections (pianist Benny Green, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash; and pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Kris Funn and drummer Billy Williams, Jr.), as well as two noteworthy duo pieces with pianist/label-mate Aaron Diehl. Comprising nine tunes (six of which are originals), ‘Wolfgang’ shows Wolf taking a different, more laid-back approach than his volcanic debut album on Mack Avenue. “The last record was a means of introducing myself as a leader,” says the 33-year-old from Baltimore. “This time I set out to showcase my writing skills with compositions that have melodies people can remember.” Wolf, a multi-instrumentalist who has also honed his chops on drums and piano since the age of three, is following in the footsteps of vibes masters Bobby Hutcherson and Stefon Harris by becoming a member of the SFJazz Collective (both of whom precede him in the vibes chair). Musicians that Warren has played or recorded with include Wynton Marsalis, Mulgrew Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ron Carter, Karriem Riggins, Robert Glasper, Esperanza Spaulding and many others. Personnel: Warren Wolf (vibes), Benny Green, Aaron Goldberg, Aaron Diehl (piano), Christian McBride, Kris Funn (bass), Lewis Nash, Billy Williams, Jr. (drums), Darryl Tookes (vocals - 8) Tracks: Sunrise / Frankie and Johnny / Grand Central / Wolfgang / Annoyance / Lake Nerraw Flow / Things Were Done Yesterday / Setembro / Variations Sur "Le Carnaval De Venise"

Carefully chosen musicians are an integral component of ‘Unknown Angels’, co-produced by Grey and ObliqSound founder Michele Locatelli (who also contributes electric guitar to the title track). Atomic There's a Hole in the Mountain

3736988 602537369881 CD JAZZLAND £7.99 JAZZ

On ‘There’s a Hole in the Mountain’ the Scandinavian free jazz supergroup Atomic, who are famed for taking “improv to the outer reaches” (The Guardian), combine their unique take on jazz with contemporary classical influences. With compositional duties led by reedsman Fredrik Ljungkvist and ivory manipulator Havard Wiik, with the full-on dynamism of the polymorphic rhythm machine of Paal Nilssen-Love and Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, and the mercurial trumpet stylings and lip-melting riffs of Magnus Broo, Atomic only seem to become more and more inventive and daring. Despite each band member’s involvement with side projects such as Motif, The Thing, The Deciders, The Young Mothers, and countless others, the band’s stream of fascinating musical ideas is as inexhaustible as ever. WORLD NEW RELEASE - 19/8/2013

Matuto The Devil & The Diamond

233716 885150337165 CD MOTEMA £7.99 WORLD

Fun as hell, Brooklyn-based Matuto’s music is a madcap mix of Brazilian forró and bluegrass. Rolling drums and quicksilver accordion licks, earthy vibes and thoughtful reflections mingle on ‘The Devil and the Diamond’. Employing renowned musicians across NYC’s diverse jazz, roots, and world music scenes, Matuto led by Americana and jazz guitarist Clay Ross and accordionist Rob Curto, features violin, guitar, accordion, bass, drums, and various Brazilian percussion instruments. ‘The Devil and the Diamond’ reflects the inspiring live show that the band has developed over hundreds of performances around the world. Appalachian fiddle tunes bounce with a Northeastern Brazilian lilt while the one string Berimbau resonates with a strangely effective blues riff. Curto spins long chromatic melodies over intricate arrangements and infectiously funky folkloric rhythms. Like a true southern preacher, Ross delivers colourfully satirical lyrics reminiscent of David Byrne, Tom Ze, and Caetano Veloso. With an honest love for roots music, genuine Brazilian styles, and improvisational experimentation, Matuto creates a unique and inspired sound from the heart of New York City’s diverse musical culture. Tracks: 1. Toca o sino (Ring the bell) 2. Diamond 3. The Way I Love You 4. Sun Song 5. Chicken Teeth 6. The Devil‘s Teeth 7. Horse Eat Corn 8. Drag Me Down 9. Demon Chopper 10. Tears 11.
