evaluative; you can be denied at 2nd or 4th.• If improvement opportunities noted, a plan is
developed to remedy the situation.• Deans can require special 3rd and/or 5th year
reviews.
Have a conversation about tenure early in the first semester with your
department/division head or director of academic affairs.
Criteria for Promotion and Tenure
• Scholarship of Teaching & Learning• Scholarship of Research & Creative
Accomplishments• Service and the Scholarship of Service to
the University, Society, & the Profession• NOTE –Appendix E of Administrative
Guidelines – Dossier Sections and Format
Nomination for Promotion to Professor
• By an appropriate academic administrator (your head)
• By a P&T committee after consultation with the appropriate academic administrator
• Time in rank not a criterion
6th-Year Tenure Reviews• In 2014-15, there were 88 6th-year tenure cases.
• Seven (7) cases were denied at the college level and never reached the University level.
• 81 cases (including 7 early tenure cases) were forwarded to the University Committee with 79 holding positive recommendations by the submitting dean.
• The University Committee recommended 79 cases. President Barron granted tenure for these 79 recommendations; therefore, two (2) were denied at the University level.
• 89.7% received tenure (79 of 88 cases).
But What If I’m Fixed Term?
• I’m not on the tenure track.• I am on an FT1 or FTM contract.• Can I get promoted?• Well – It depends.
Promotion of Fixed Term Faculty (HR21)
• Some positions have promotion opportunities (i.e., lecturer to senior lecturer)
• Decisions made within colleges/campuses• Peer review committees involved• Review your college/campus guidelines
Annual Evaluations (HR40)
• Everyone Gets Evaluated Each Year!• Department Heads Conduct Evaluations.• Salary Increases Linked to Evaluations.• Post-Tenure or Extended 5-Year Reviews.• Review Your College Guidelines.
