Clinical Attendings
“Are expected to excel in clinical work. They often play critically important roles in the bedside teaching mission of the College, and may also participate in clinical research. Scholarly work in any of these areas is encouraged but is not required.”

Clinical Attending – Associate Professor
Qualifications: “Service as an Assistant Professor with a record of significant accomplishments and demonstrated excellence in clinical efforts. The faculty member should have developed an active, productive clinical practice with evidence of skill, high quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. For positions with significant expectations for teaching, evidence of high quality teaching will be required.”
Time Allotment
Clinical Service
A high level of competence and diligence in a clinical area as evidenced by recognition from peers and patients as an outstanding clinician
(M.D.s) Board Certification (see page 11 of the P&T document)
Demonstrated practice of current standards of patient care and/or development of standards for patient care
Clinical Service
Local and/or regional reputation for excellent clinical skills as evidenced by patient referrals and/or invited presentations
Active participation and/or leadership in local, regional, and/or national professional organizations
Teaching/Mentoring
If the candidate’s position involves a teaching role: “Evidence of high quality teaching demonstrated
through formal peer and trainee evaluations” Document types of teaching and contact hours with your
learners Documented evaluation of teaching performance:
(Your mean scores compared to the department scores, not copies of evaluations)
“Serving as an effective role model of a practicing physician and mentor for students, residents, fellows, and colleagues.”
Teaching/Mentoring
If the candidate’s position involves a mentoring role:
List of those you mentor and have mentored in the past
Estimate of contact hours with mentees Evidence of your contributions to their

Explain any “non-traditional” methods by which your work has been peer-reviewed
Research/Scholarly Work
Encouraged but not required for promotion Collaboration in clinical research,
including recruitment of patients for clinical trials
Co-author of reviews, case reports, reports of clinical investigation
Development of curricular or other teaching materials, including materials for patients and families
Research/Scholarly Work
If you have produced scholarly work, include the following in your P&T packet: Copies of your 5 most meritorious
publications Must be published or ‘in press’ Middle-author papers count, explain your role
in the work and production of the publication Helpful to annotate the bibliography of your
CV – explicitly explaining your role as a “middle-author” or “co-investigator”
Leadership/Administrative Service
Participation in section, department, and/or hospital administration
Work on committees – local or regional Document participation and valuable contributions
Provide service to the professional or lay community through education, consultation, or other roles
Active in the development and/or implementation of clinical practice guidelines and/or serving to help develop health care policy
Advocate for patients groups or health care policy
Professional Recognition
Should have established a reputation at the local level, at a minimum.

Letters of Recommendation Three letters are required Authors
Should be recognized authorities in the candidate’s field and may be from inside or outside of UAMS
Should NOT have hired you or trained you Should clearly have reviewed your portfolio and
have detailed comments Ideally, one or two of these letters should be written
by authorities outside of your own department, giving supportive evidence about your local reputation
Obtaining Letters
Provide your Department Chair with a list of names and contact information; Chair may suggest additional authors of letters
Department Chair’s solicitation includes: Letter of request for recommendation Your CV COM P&T guidelines
Solicit more letters than you need to ensure you get three great letters back in time
Additional letters may be a good idea if they add significant information or an importantly different perspective on your contributions. These may be from inside UAMS or outside.

Leadership/Administrative Service Demonstration of collegiality and
leadership in arena of practice, department or institution
Leadership role in provision of clinical care in department or hospital

Three letters of recommendation required
At least one letter of recommendation must be from outside UAMS and attest to the candidate’s national reputation and contributions
For Either Promotion Rank Request
If your department has a Promotion and Tenure committee, the results of their vote should be included in your binder.
When possible, have your packet reviewed by someone in your department who has been on the P&T Committee.
Packets are due to the Office of Faculty Affairs, Central Building (old hospital) 4D40, by 4:30pm on Monday, October 3, 2011.

Talk to P&T committee chair in department or faculty affairs representative before finalizing your initial appointment or if you have unresolved concerns.
Get a mentor. Attend P&T workshops. Prepare a concise, neat, well-organized
packet that makes it easy for the reviewer to find support that you have met criteria.
