Design Brief and Task Analysis

- Design Brief: Your situation or problem that you are going to investigate and design a solution for. - Task Analysis: produce a mind map to help you break down the design brief into clearer areas to help you research.

Mood board

Initial Ideas

Initial ideas with annotation (at least 3-4 ideas) Clearly drawn and rendered. (See teacher for handout)

Final Idea

Clearly drawn and rendered (shade and colour) with annotation. Ideas must range from simple to developed conceptual.

Plan for Making

A plan of how to make or assemble your chosen idea in school. The page should include materials, time it will take, tools used and processes and quality checks.

Practical Diary

A log or diary of how you made your final product, this should include any changes you made and why.

Design Brief

USB pen drives are becoming popular devices

to transport and store

documents / data. These tiny devices come in

a vast range of designs and are able to suit a

wide customer audience.

A small company wishes to create a

novelty USB pen drive that will appeal to the

teenage market.

-They want you to show your work in a design

portfolio and come up with a range of ideas

that could be put forward to the design team.

-They also want you to design and make a

working prototype that will promote the com-

panies image as well as being eye-catching.

Mood Board Collect some images of different USB pen drives and any other things that may be useful to your research. Remember that everything you collect must be relevant to the design brief. Write a small summary of why you did this task and how you can use it to help you develop ideas.

Summary of research

A mood board is a collection of images that helps a designer to

gain inspiration for their ideas. It is also useful to help designers

to be unique and creative.

Specification Now that you have completed some research and have a better understanding of how you are going to solve the design brief, make a list of points which your design must have in order to be successful. Look at the example specification and use this to help you create your own.

A specification is a statement that tells the designer exactly what

the product has to do and what the design requirements are

SPECIFICATION

1. The MP3 docking station must be within 450 X 400 X 400mm in size.

2. It must be either retro or modern in design.

3. It must appeal to teenagers.

4. It must allow the most popular types of MP3 player to dock with it.

5. It must be available in a range of colours / textures.

6. The purchase price must be less than £70.

7. It must be robust and strong.

8. It should have a range of features including: Remote Control, volume, bass, treble,

loop play, continuous play, random play, favourites, USB connectivity.

Initial Ideas Once you have collected all your research you can start to think about getting some initial ideas down on paper. Make sure you clearly annotate your ideas. It is important that you understand that these are sketches and no finished design drawings.

Modelling Collect some information about different types of modelling materials and how they could help you construct a model of your USB pen drive. Think about how easy the material is to work with and how much of it you will need. Write a summary of why modelling is important and take pictures of your models to annotate.

Final Ideas Choose your idea that you are going to take forward and produce as final outcome. Using Isometric paper to draw your idea in 3D and use your rendering techniques to make it look realistic. Make sure you not down the changes you have made from your original idea.

CAD/CAM work Work that you have completed on 2D design or on Google Sketch-up needs to be documented on this page. Your work must be annotated explaining what is going on. Think about the different tools and why we use different coloured lines in CAD drawings.

Plan of Manufacture Document how you are going to produce your USB pen drive from start to finish. Is there any quality control point you need to check before moving onto the next stage?

Testing & Evaluation Put a photo on this page of your finished product and explain how well it met the design specification. Is there anything you would change or do differently? How could you improve your work?

Packaging Challenge! Can you design a suitable piece of packaging that will stand out if your USB pen drive were to be sold in an electronics / stationary shop? Think about; Existing packaging Packaging materials Packaging Design Information / logo’s Colour Scheme
