    LEADERSHIP

    JAMNALAL BAJAJ (1889 - 1942)

The Bajaj Group of Companies was founded byJamnalal Bajaj. An

astute businessman, Jamanalals foresight in picking the rightbusiness at the right time that generated phenomenal growth.

However, his business interests were the means to a larger and

holistic end. Very active duringIndias freedom struggle, Jamanalal

was a philanthropist who delighted in donating most of his wealth

for worthy causes. From the beginning, Jamanalal was always more

involved in social and philanthropic activities rather than business.

He was a staunch follower ofMahatma Gandhiand had the rare

distinction of being regarded by Gandhiji as his own protege.

Jamanalal assisted in Gandhijis activities and was increasingly

involved, and committed to, the Mahatmas programmes and Indias

    freedom struggle.

    KAMALNAYAN BAJAJ (1915 - 1972)

Kamalnayan Bajaj, the eldest son of Jamanalal Bajaj, started

shouldering family responsibilities from an early age. After

completing his education fromUniversity of Cambridge, England,Kamalnayan returned to India to assist his father Jamanalal, both

in business and in social service. Kamalnayan was a man of strict

principles, which he never swerved from. He had earmarked a large

portion of the income from his family business for public causes

and social service programmes, the mantle of all of which he had

inherited from his father. He always had a sense of a larger social

mission, transcending the dictates of business and the bottom line.

    RAMKRISHNA BAJAJ (1924 - 1994)

Ramkrishna Bajaj, the younger son of Jamanalal, took over after

the demise of his elder brother Kamalnayan Bajaj in 1972. In

addition to shouldering business responsibilities, Ramkrishnas

    SELF RELIANCE

    THE JAMNALAL BAJAJ SEVA TRUST

Soon after the demise of Jamnalalji in 1942, as per his wishes, the

first charitable trust, Jamnalal Bajaj Seva Trust was established.

With an initial corpus of Rs. 500,000, that was, Jamnalalji's entireshare in the family wealth. Gandhiji himself drafted the

Memorandum and Articles of Association of the trust and finalized

    its objectives.

Initially, the trust assisted Sarvodaya workers and Gandhian

    constructive programmes.

In 1960, at the suggestion of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, the trust

purchased about 400 acres of land on the outskirts of Bangalore to

establish an International Sarvodaya Centre-Vishwaneedam For

promoting agriculture, dairy development, rural development and

training local women and youth for self-employment.

In 1961, the trust made a donation to the University of Mumbai for

establishing the first management institute in Mumbai, the

Jamnalar Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.

The trust also looks after the maintenance of Bajajwadi at Wardha. This was a national guest house in the pre-independence days. At

Jamnalalji's instance, Gandhiji came to stay in Wardha. Soon,

Wardha became the centre of Gandhiji's constructive and political

activities. Eminent national leaders from all over the country used

to stay in Bajajwadi, whenever they would come to meet Gandhiji.

Also, meetings of the Congress Working Committee were held here.

The Bajajwadi today reverberates memories of that historic period of

    our freedom struggle.

The trust has also been contributing its share to the promotion of

arts and culture through the Kamalnayan Bajaj Hall and Art

Gallery. Exhibitions, handicrafts display as well as corporate

meetings, conferences and seminars are common activities inside

the Kamalnayan Bajaj Hall. The art gallery is used to display the

artistic works of painters and sculptors. The art gallery also
