KINO TAPIOLA & ESPOO CINÉ INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

�Kino Tapiola is a small, independent commercial cinema that has since 2010 been run by Espoo Ciné Film Festival, a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 1989. Over the years Espoo Ciné has become the most important Finnish arena for screening the latest, high quality European films.

�Kino Tapiola is a historically important venue, designed by the visionary architect Aarne Ervi in 1955 and as such protected as part of Finnish architectural heritage. Kino Tapiola has been in regular cinema use for decades and always one of the screening venues for Espoo Cinéexcept in 2008-2009 when the cinema had to be closed due to the collapse of the inner ceiling and the extensive renovation that then followed.

�The Cultural Board of the City of Espoo played a key role in the salvation of Kino Tapiola for cinema use as they vouched Espoo Ciné to take over the running of the cinema, pushing the owners to renovate the building to its original glory of 1955.

�Funding from the Finnish Film Foundation meant that Kino Tapiola opened on 13.08.2010 equipped with the latest technology for both cinema and conference purposes. The engine room houses both the Barco DP2K-23B digital projector with 3D facilities as well as two 35mm film projectors; the cinema is also fitted with satellite disc for screening alternative contents.

�Since run by Espoo Ciné, Kino Tapiola has been attracting regular local audiences, screening selected premiering films, focusing on European films of quality in the tradition of Espoo Ciné, as well as Finnish premiers. On average, Kino Tapiola is open an four days a week, screening four to six different films per week, and it has also become a popular venue for hosting private parties and business conferences.

�Thanks to our small stage, Kino Tapiola has also been used for theatre and musical performances and also as a platform for the festival of new media art. Kino Tapiola runs special monthly daytime screenings for seniors and families with small babies and will be starting a regular matinee of selected films for local pupils in the autumn.

�In August, the 22nd Espoo Ciné International Film Festival will bring thousands of viewers to Kino Tapiola again, guaranteeing its audiences the best as well as the latest trends and phenomena in the field of European cinema.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

KINO TAPIOLA: A brief description of your interest in digital/electronic projection and of the technical equipment (if any) for digital/electronic projection in your cinema, specifying which programmes your cinema is offering on a digital/electronic projector.

�Kino Tapiola has the following digital cinema equipment:

� Barco DP2K-23B digital DLP cinema projector (2K-resolution)

� XpanD 3D-cinema

� Dolby Screen Server DSS200 D-Cinema server

� Barco ACS-2048 video scaler

� Philips BDP3000 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD-player

�Almost all digital and analogical image sources can be screened through the digital cinema projector. Kino Tapiola has hosted many seminars and conferences as well as a New Media Arts Festival, where the contents, ranging from PowerPoint to complex video presentations, have been successfully projected via the conference laptop (Dell Latitude E6510) to the big screen via Digital Cinema with full 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz resolution and stereo sound. Kino Tapiola will also be starting satellite projections in the autumn, offering alternative contents such as opera and concerts. We are interested in exploring further the potential in various digital contents, for example we are looking into offering a platform for viewing 3D-short films. At present, most of our regular cinema programming is in digital format, although we also have two 35 mm film projectors.
