Welcome

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Conference Committee, we are delighted to welcome you to the University of Greenwich for the SECED 2019 conference.

Building on the success of the 2015 conference, SECED 2019 is truly international with speakers drawn from the UK, Europe and further afield. Once again, the conference themes are organised in a series of symposia. This has entailed a considerable amount of work by reviewers and session chairs, in order to ensure a balanced programme. The organising committee are extremely grateful to them for their commitment and focus, and we hope that you will reward their efforts by fully participating in these symposia.

In addition to the symposia we still retain the more traditional keynote lectures with distinguished speakers from the UK and abroad, as well as poster sessions where you can meet the authors to discuss ideas, and the exhibition – both of which can be found on the first floor.

The conference dinner on Monday evening takes place in the stunning, recently re-opened Painted Hall at the heart of the Old Naval College in Greenwich. The dinner provides the ideal opportunity to catch up with old friends and acquaintances as well as making new contacts in beautiful surroundings.

SECEDSECED, the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics, was founded in 1969 to promote the study and practice of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics, including blast, impact, and other vibration problems. SECED is also concerned with the study of societal and economic ramifications of major earthquakes.

SECED is the British branch of both the International Association and the European Association of Earthquake Engineering. SECED is an Associated Society of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and is sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and The Geological Society.

SECED is the main forum in the UK for students, academics and practitioners with interest in earthquakes, blast and other types of dynamic effects. It organises a wide range of activities including a full programme of technical discussions at the ICE and at regional venues in the UK. It promotes the biennial Mallet-Milne lecture and has hosted several conferences and courses.

A quarterly newsletter is published and distributed to the membership whilst the SECED Facebook page and Twitter feed provide more immediate opportunities for interaction supplemented by more comprehensive information on SECED’s activities on the website (seced.org.uk).

Conference InformationThe venueThe University of Greenwich Stockwell Street Library is located in the heart of Greenwich, with excellent public transport links and public pay and display car parks nearby.

Internet accessFree wireless internet access is available throughout the site. If you have an Eduroam account you have automatic access. Otherwise, you should have received a log-on code. If not, please go to the registration desk where this can be organised.

PowerPoint presentationsEach meeting room is equipped with a PC, screen and projector. Presenters should load their PowerPoint presentations onto the PC in the room they are presenting in, in the break prior to their presentation time. There is a dedicated technician on hand, should you need assistance.

Memory sticksAll delegates will receive a USB stick in their delegate pack. The keynote, oral and poster presentation papers have been uploaded onto the USB memory sticks.

Where to eatCoffee breaks and lunch will be served on the first floor in the exhibition area for all conference participants. The conference dinner on Monday 9 September will be at The Painted Hall, Old Naval College, Greenwich for delegates who have booked a full conference ticket and day delegates who have pre-booked a place.

Conference DinnerThe Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College Greenwich

The conference dinner will take place in the stunning Painted Hall, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Referred to as the ‘Sistine Chapel of the UK’ with its huge decorated interior being a masterpiece of English baroque art, the Painted Hall has recently re-opened following a multi-million pound renovation and conservation project.

The Painted Hall is the centrepiece of the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Originally the site of Greenwich Palace and birthplace of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the baroque buildings standing today were designed by Sir Christopher Wren as the Royal Hospital for Seamen. Later it became home to the Royal Naval College and is now open to the public as the Old Royal Naval College. The Painted Hall, designed as a ceremonial dining room for what was then the new Royal Hospital for Seaman, was completed in 1705. Its vast decorative scheme was painted by Sir James Thornhill, the first British artist to be knighted. Started in 1707, it took 19 years to complete.
