PROFINET commissioning criteria to ensure a reliable operation

The release of the new PROFINET Commissioning Guideline by the PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) stipulates important commissioning criteria. These ensure that the PROFINET network remains stable from the beginning and are summarized below.

PROFINET commissioning PROFINET Commissioning Guideline

Version 1.36 | Dec. 14

System reserve test of POF cabling ■ Power budget (optical system reserve) = Unit of measure- ment for the light reserve capacity available in the section between transmitter and receiver

■ Influenced by cable length, plug-in connections and the transmitting and receive power of the devices

PROscan® ActiveArt. No. 117000014 Source: Commissioning Guideline by the PI (V 1.36 / Dec. 14) p. 88/89

■ ■Discarded packets: telegrams rejected by the switch caused by e.g. interference, transmission errors or over-flow in queues in switches

■ CRC error detection (error telegrams)

Discarded packets / Error telegrams

PROscan® ActiveArt. No. 117000014 Source: Commissioning Guideline by the PI (V 1.36 / Dec. 14) p. 93/94

Based on the design predefinitions there have to be checked:

■ ■Maximum line depth (number of passing devices in one communication line, e.g. switches or IO devices with integrated switches)

■ ■Node information (firmware and hardware versions, device types, names acc. to naming convention)

Topology test

PROFINET commissioning criteria to ensure a reliable operation

■ ■In communication hubs with high data flows → network connection to the controller

■ Measurement required prior to each controller having a multi controller application

Net load

PROFINET-INspektor® NTArt. No. 124030100 Source: Commissioning Guideline by the PI (V 1.36 / Dec. 14) p. 95-97

Jitter ■ ■an important parameter for long-term trouble-free operation

■ ■Fluctuation in the time intervals of PROFINET packets → long delay, meaning high jitter

■ ■Constantly high jitter is evidence of a changed load ratio, topology changes or device replacement PROFINET-INspektor® NT

Both solutions provide for testing all the required commissioning criteria.

incl. wiring test in PROFINET and shield current measurement.

PROFINET communication monitoring (telegram gap) ■ Each controller has an internal error counter that triggers a fieldbus error when threshold values are exceeded.

■ A higher threshold value increases the fault tolerance if an error occurs, but also extends time until faults are detected.

■ Recommendation is to retain the standard setting 3. If the setting is changed, a check is needed to determine, if the time is sufficiently short.

Broadcast and multicast traffic ■ The broadcast and multicast traffic is to be checked.
