Another Public Speaking triumph for Sarah Redfern High school: Congratulations Jeremy M! If Public Speaking is all about courage and conviction, then the win we had at the recent Speak Up! NAIDOC Public Speaking Competition is testimony to this. Our Year 7 student, Jeremy M, won second prize at this event, beating sixty-one other contestants ranging from Years 7 to 9. We are indeed very proud of this accomplishment, which makes it yet another Public Speaking win for us this year. Our school was very ably represented by both students, Jeremy M and Tameisha S M also of Year 7. They spoke with great confidence on a topic close to their hearts, “Because of her, we can”, where Jeremy’s speech was about his mother, Priscilla Marlowe and the obstacles she has had to overcome, to survive. For a first attempt at Public Speaking both Jeremy and Tameisha spoke with confidence and impressed the audience; not to mention that the venue was the New South Wales Parliament chamber. Tameisha shared with the audience, her heartfelt thoughts about her Nan, the late Angeline Saunders, who influenced her in more ways than one. This competition was a celebration of the contribution of Aboriginal women to Australia today, to their dedication and the roles they have played in the everyday lives of ordinary people and we were very proud to participate in this event. Both students are very grateful for the support of our AEO Ms Jones and Ms Reveleigh. Congratulations Jeremy and Tameisha! You did us proud!

Campbelltown Koshigaya Sister Cities Association is an organisation which has been around for about 30 years. They have been building a relationship with Koshigaya in Japan, hence the name Campbelltown Koshigaya (you have most likely heard of Koshigaya Park in Campbelltown; well, there is a Campbelltown Park in Koshigaya as well). Each year a group of students from Campbelltown are sent to Koshigaya Japan where they learn about the Japanese culture and traditions and tell their host families about Campbelltown and Australia. My experience on this trip was amazing! Not only have I learnt so much about Japan but I have also developed many close relationships with my host family and newfound friends. It
was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I would definitely recommend it to others. We did so much in Japan; each day was packed full with a new adventure. I really enjoyed going to the different schools and seeing how different they are to Australian schools. All of the students were excited to meet us and we made a lot of new friends. I also enjoyed the Japanese gardens. They were so beautiful; we took so many photos. We also experienced flower arranging and a tea ceremony. The flower arrangements were done in a way that you could appreciate the natural beauty of the flowers. It was really interesting. I enjoyed the tea ceremony as well, because we
learned how the tea is made and what formalities are used. The purpose of tea ceremonies are that everyone simply enjoys a cup of tea. All titles are gone; there used to be tiny doors into the tea room so that everyone would have to crouch down to the same level to get in. We also went to Mt Fuji. Although we were unable to see Mt Fuji from a lookout point because of the typhoon, it was pretty cool to go up to the 5th station on Mt Fuji. I loved spending time with my host family. They took us to Chichibu, an Edo style village, Harajuku and a few other places. My last night with them, my host mother, Yoko, dressed me in her daughter’s kimono. Both my host father and host mother were such amazing people. Finally on the last day we went to Disneyland, which was pretty cool. The lines were very long but the rides that I went on were really fun. My favourite ride was Space Mountain. I absolutely loved my trip to Japan, it was amazing to experience so many new things and meet so many new people. It was truly amazing and I am so thankful of the Campbelltown Koshigaya Sister Cities Association and Sarah Redfern High School for letting me go. I am definitely going back to Japan one day.

Aboriginal Awareness, Education and
Prevention Youth Corroboree 2018
For three consecutive days, Jeremy, Riley, Elizabeth and Tamiesha attended the Corroboree at the Aboriginal Pathways Centre Campbelltown TAFE. This event was designed to increase awareness of healthy living and the importance of family, culture and connection as protective factors for students and schools within the South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD). Students were engaged in every session that were conducted by Tharawal SEWB team, TAFE staff, and SWSLHD professionals that included issues on: healthy relationships, cultural identity, mental health, drug and alcohol consequences, healthy eating and participating in traditional games. Guest speaker, Joe Williams, is a proud Wiradjari man and former player for South Sydney Rabbitohs, Penrith Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs, as well as holding two World Junior Welterweight titles and the WBC Asia Continental Title. Although he was seen as a successful man, he battled on a daily basis with mental health issues that continues today. With his ability to reflect he was able to change his mindset where he now helps people who struggle with mental illness and suicide prevention. He has written an autobiography ‘Defying the Enemy Within’. Joe’s parting words were: to be always grateful, respectful, display compassion and humility, exercise and sleep, to live the here and now and don’t allow social media consume to your life. Karen Beetson was also an inspirational guest speaker who shared her story. Karen is the Deputy Director of Aboriginal Health at SWSLH and an example of ‘Because of her we can’. Karen reminded students that education is a way to live between both worlds; however, you must stay connected with your culture through art, song, dance and storytelling. The three days experienced by our students met the outcomes of healthy eating and the negative impacts of drinking
soft drinks on our bodies; connection to culture through cultural activities; and links to local health and community
services.

Zonta International is a leading global organisation of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. One of the many projects that they endorse in their ethos is recognising the achievements of exceptional women and girls in our local community; recognising the cultural diversity in our community; and engaging with local high schools to further empower young women to pursue their life goals with Conviction, Commitment and Courage. To celebrate the achievements of young women, The Zonta Club of Macarthur held an annual awards dinner at West’s Leagues Club on Wednesday 26th September. The night was attended by Mrs Fedel and Ms Rattan, with guest speaker Ms Endicott. We are proud to announce that Codi and Emma were worthy recipients as runners-up for the Achievement Award for a Young Indigenous Woman 2018. The school’s nomination for each of the girls included: service to the school or wider community, leadership within the school and the determination to successfully complete their secondary education.
Congratulations Codi and Emma. We wish you both a bright future.

On 26th October a small group of Stage 5 Aboriginal students attended the ‘Pathways to Dreaming’ program at Western Sydney University Kingswood campus. The program is designed to raise awareness on post school study and career options for students from the south-western region. Students were exposed to three different fields of study music, mathematical juggling and astronomy. After over an hour on the bus we were met with refreshments and snacks catered by the university. This was required to maintain our energy for the workshops. The first session was devoted to music. A demonstration on producing a rhythm using the body was especially engaging; however, when it was our turn we soon realised that it was quite difficult to maintain the sequence and tempo. The majority of students shared that they had no previous experience in even touching let alone playing a musical instrument. Fortunately, the stage 5 students were able to select a percussion instrument that allowed them to follow the instructor in creating a rhythmic sound. The group composition was very successful. The second session was timetabled ‘juggling’; where we discovered that the workshop was focused on juggling numbers. Patrick and Kenny, who are juggling mathematicians demonstrated that they are able to record, extract patterns to hypothesise new patterns of throws and catches using their mathematical properties. Students were provided the opportunity to perform juggling using three balls and both hands; apparently the simplest type of juggling. The hands alternate throwing balls, which describes a parabola before landing in the opposite hand ready to be thrown again. At any given time there is one ball in the air, and one ball in each hand, everything is perfectly symmetrical - well, sometimes…. By this time students were hungry, and a delicious lunch was provided that also included kangaroo and crocodile meat. The final session was a visit to the Western Sydney University Penrith Observatory which is part of the School of Computing Engineering and Mathematics. Students entered the dome to view the day sky through the main 0.6 m telescope. To discover physical forces, paper rockets were constructed and launched.
This was a wonderful opportunity for our stage 5 students and are grateful to Western Sydney University for
delivering the Pathways to Dreaming program.

Each year the students of Sarah Redfern High School achieve something positive and productive in the field of Science. This year Leo M of Year 11 Chemistry and Physics class received the 2018 Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Science Award on Wednesday 14 November 2018. The award ceremony was held at the Campbelltown Arts Centre, with students presented the award in front of their teachers, Principals, Councilors, Scientists, families and friends. Leo is an outstanding student exhibiting excellence in senior Chemistry and Physics. He is
cooperative and polite and truly represents the values of public education. Congratulations to Leo on his success in achieving the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Science Award and we (Science department and school community) would like to thank Leo for his contribution and wish him success in his
future endeavors. The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests and speakers including Mr. George Britcevic, Mayor Campbelltown City Council, Dr. David Humphreys Scientist from Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, counsellors, teachers and Principals. Nominated by the Science staff as demonstrating the highest achievement in scientific studies throughout the year, Leo Min will now have the opportunity to visit the Institute to learn first-hand about its activities and about a career in science under the supervision of leading researchers and Scientists at the Victor Chang Institute Sydney.

The aim of the session is to provide you with a "try before you buy" insight into the physical capacity testing day. This event is a practice session only and will not be recorded as an official result. You will be provided with important information and an opportunity to gain hands on practice for each of the tests. Qualified NSW Police PTI's will be on hand to answer your test and fitness questions. Note: Participants will be required to bring photo identification and a current GP medical clearance on the day. The 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur is an annual fundraiser that provides the Macarthur area with extra services and equipment needed to assist in the treatment, care and comfort of children and adults dealing with cancer. In twelve years, more than $3.7 million has been raised and because the charity is volunteer run - 100% of money raised stays in the Macarthur area! Once again this year we entered a Minto Community of Schools Team raising over $2300 for this worthy event. Even though the weather was dubious everyone enjoyed getting together and walking for a great cause, and as a fitting tribute the late Fred Borg OAM, the founder and Chairperson of the 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur since it began in 2005 will be honoured with a special plaque which will stand on a 1.5metre high sandstone block and placed at the entrance of the Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
