*THE UNIT 8 PROJECT*REVISION V. EDITING*REVISION TECHNIQUES

*What do you do when you have a problem or situation that you have thought about over and over again, but just can’t figure out?*How do you “break through” or deal with this type of situation?

LET’S WARM-UP

Many of you have shared that you often take a break somehow from thinking about the problem

OR you find someone to talk it over with, someone who can give you a fresh perspective

FEEDBACK FORM from the KUWC.In order to receive your feedback from the Writing Center, you MUST submit your essay draft to the KUWC.

If you haven’t already submitted your essay draft (your Unit 7 Project) to the KUWC, then please do so IMMEDIATELY!!! - but not during seminar.

THE UNIT 8 PROJECT – PART 1

It will take several days for the Writing Center to respond via email.

You will receive an email with two (2) attachments.

AND THEN…

Download the attachment that has the word “feedback” in the file name.

Be sure to RENAME it with YOUR FIRST & LAST NAME in the file name.

Per the Unit 8 Project directions, your feedback file should be named: username KUWC review.

Example: macgrottyKUWCreview

DOWNLOAD THE TWO ATTACHMENTS…

What the feedback form looks like:

SUBMIT YOUR FEEDBACK FORM TO THE DROPBOX

What is a “revision plan”?Steps for revision that include specific goals and activities designed to enhance certain areas of an essay.

PART 2 OF UNIT 8 PROJECT: YOUR REVISION PLAN

From the directions for the Unit 8 Project:

Your Revision Plan Submit your feedback from the Writing Center to the Dropbox in Unit 8, along with a description of your revision plan for your essay.

YOU NEED TO WRITE A REVISION PLAN

FROM THE RUBRIC…

Includes a minimum of one well-developed paragraph of 5-7 sentences each that explains plan to apply feedback from instructor and the KUWC to revise the biographical essay.

PART 2 – THE REVISION PLAN

I plan to revise my 2nd body paragraph by adding more details about my education. The professor pointed out that I have only three sentences in this paragraph. I forgot to add in that I went to community college for a year and earned a certificate. The Writing Center said that I needed to work on subject verb agreement, so I am going to have someone help me with this during the Live Tutor hours. I will also read my essay out loud to maybe “hear” some of my errors.

AN EXAMPLE REVISION PLAN

Type up your paragraph in MS WordBe sure to use APA formatting (font size 12, double-spacing, NO title page necessary for a one page assignment)

Be sure to put your name in your filename AND in your assignment document.

TYPE YOUR PARAGRAPH IN WORD

Be sure to label your file with your name AND the title of your assignment, such as “Revision Plan”.

SUBMIT YOUR REVISION PLAN WITH YOUR FEEDBACK FORM!!!

If you did not submit your essay draft at the end of Unit 7, then I highly suggest you submit your essay draft to the KU Writing Center as soon as you can.

This will allow the Writing Center time to return your paper with feedback so that you have time to submit it to me in time.

DO NOT WAIT!

Although you only have to submit the Writing Center feedback as your “project” for this unit, DO NOT LET YOUR ESSAY SIT FOR A WHOLE WEEK WITHOUT WORKING ON IT!!!

You need to REVISE your essay draft using my comments as well as the Writing Center feedback.

DO NOT FORGET ABOUT YOUR ESSAY!

Look at the Unit 8 Key Concepts…

WHAT IS “REVISION”?

Part of the writing process that involves “re-thinking” your writing and critically evaluating both what you say and how you say it.

REVISION IS…

A verb – an actionTwo parts

Re – “back, again”Vise – derived from the Latin visum – see, look

Means to literally see again, to look at in a new way

For our purposes, means to rethink and rewrite

REVISE

Revision involves creativity and thinking!!!

Editing involves being critical and looking for errors and mistakes!

REVISION & EDITING USES DIFFERENT SIDES OF YOUR BRAIN…

You will be trying to find mistakes (use your left brain) at the same time you are trying to be creative and think of ideas (use your right brain)!

You can’t go in opposite directions at the same time! You will either go crazy or shut down!

DON’T TRY TO REVISE AND EDIT…

You will mostly likely become frustrated or get “writer’s block”

OR you won’t see the larger errors of your essay because you are focused on the tiny errors.

REVISE FIRST!

Please turn to page 469 in Pathways…

Look at the Revision Checklist in the box.

ONLY focus on the Paragraph Development list.

(Sentence level issues are EDITING issues).

REVISION TECHNIQUES

3. Does the topic sentence identify the topic?(do you HAVE a topic sentence???)

4. Does each sentence in the paragraph SUPPORT or explain the topic?(if not, then you might need to delete or revise that sentence)

5. Are there enough details in the paragraph to explain the topic?(for this essay, you should have 4 detail sentences)

PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT LIST

Coherence means that your essay makes sense when read from beginning to end.

When you talk about your details in your 3rd & 4th paragraphs, be sure those details are in chronological order (in time order). So, be sure you talk about your high

school work and then your college work.

COHERENCE

On a personal level, Renee Smith enjoys spending time with her family and friends.1 Smith also dedicates each Sunday morning to teaching Sunday school and singing in her church choir.2 Twice a week, her family reads together from a novel or biography.3 Even as a busy mother, she does find a little time for a girls’ night out once in a while.4 She has three children: one son, 12, and two daughters, 14 and 6.5

EXAMPLE OF INCOHERENT PARAGRAPH

Use the comments provided to you from your instructor and the Writing Center

Get a friend/coworker to read it over for you for fluency and clarity.

Read it out loud to yourself – SLOWLY – to “listen” for any incoherence or “gaps”.

REVISION STRATEGIES

Found in the syllabus (see Unit 9 Project)Your final project is worth 250 points!!!The scoring guide is your best friendUsed by your instructor to award your pointsReview the scoring guide and grade yourself – great strategy to self assess!
