A Message from the Director Welcome to Vancouver Academy of Dance’s 2019 Year End Performance, Spectrum. As our 24th season

comes to an end, I’d like to thank all our supporters – the community, sponsors, volunteers, VAD PAC, parents,

students, teachers, and staff. We are delighted to have you join us for two distinct shows comprised of award-

winning works by VAD’s distinguished faculty and performed by VAD’s talented dancers.

Congratulations to all our students on their outstanding achievements they have made thus far. From our

tiny tots gracing the stage for their first time tonight, to our seasoned performers – your dedication and hard

work are to be commended. Your enthusiasm and commitment continue to play a vital role in VAD’s vibrant

community. We are so proud of all our dancers – kudos to VAD’s Examination Division on their remarkable

results from the Royal Academy of Dance and Acrobatic Arts. We are proud to continually be home of finalists

and overall highscore winners in Canadian and American Dance Competitions. Please refer to our 2018 – 2019

This evening’s performance showcases students of all ages in a wide spectrum of styles from Ballet to Hip

Hop. The Vancouver Academy of Dance is recognized for producing versatile dancers who are diverse in many

genres. Thank you for joining us in celebrating another successful year of excellence!

To the teachers and staff, thank you for your time and efforts and most importantly sharing your love of dance

with our next generation. To the parents, your support and encouragement has been invaluable, thank you

for giving your children the opportunity to experience the performing arts. To all the students, thank you for

giving us the opportunity to be a part of your lives. To this year’s graduates, we wish you the best of success

in your future endeavours and am delighted to have been a part of your lives. To all our longtime supporters,

Established in 1995, the Vancouver Academy of Dance (VAD) has been established to inspire creativity, develop potential, promote cultural

diversity, and foster appreciation for the performing arts.

24 Years of Quality Dance and Performing Arts TrainingVAD is committed to offering quality education in multidisciplinary dance and performing arts. The faculty consists of dedicated and experienced

instructors that are amongst the most reputable in the nation and worldwide.

The Academy emphasizes challenge and enjoyment, as well as technical excellence and artistic expression in each of its students. Through

professional caliber education and training, students gain an appreciation for the performing arts, as well as are given the sense of reaching their

own greatest potential.

Skills for the Real WorldStudents are encouraged to strive towards self-awareness, personal satisfaction, and to build positive attitudes with respect to themselves and

others. Through dancing, students gain self-confidence, discipline, and self-motivation. The Vancouver Academy of Dance upholds a friendly,

professional environment dedicated to personal growth, teamwork, and physical and mental progress.

Measurable ResultsUnder the artistic direction of Anabel Ho, students have received numerous honourable distinction awards, trophies, medals, and scholarships

in regional, national, and international dance competitions worldwide. Students of the Vancouver Academy of Dance have also continually

obtained outstanding results annually in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), Imperial Society Teachers of Dance (ISTD), and Acrobatic Arts

(AAC) examinations.

Performance DivisionVAD’s Performance Division is in popular demand to perform in events and festivals around the Lower Mainland as well as abroad. They have

performed in cities such as Victoria, Whistler, Grande Prairie, Calgary, Seattle, North Carolina, Los Angeles, New York City, Beijing, and Macau.

VAD has also had the honour of performing for her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, and were invited to perform for the International Olympic

Committee during their visit to Vancouver and the United Nations Urban Forum. They have been seen televised around the world performing

with Hong Kong stars Eric Tsang and Liza Wang for CCTV’s Chinese New Year Special “The Same Song.” VAD students performed for the Beijing

Olympics BC Canadian Pavilion Launch for all the premiers of Canada, and the Governor’s Ball for the Vancouver Board of Trade. In 2010,

students performed at the International Olympic Committee’s Annual General Meeting, the Vancouver Chinese New Year Celebration for Prime

Minister Stephen Harper, 2010 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremonies, and represented Canada for the fourth time in the 12th International

Youth Dance Festival in Macau, China. VAD students were delighted to represent Canada at the 2011 Folkmoot International Dance Festival

in North Carolina U.S.A . In the summer of 2014, VAD had the exciting privilege of performing in Disneyland California as well as training at the

prestigious dance studios, The Edge Performing Arts Center and Millennium Dance Complex in LA. VAD’s Senior Dancers travelled to New York to

train and participate in the New York City Dance Alliance Convention and Competition, July 2016. VAD’s soloists competed at the 5678 Showtime

Nationals, as well as represented Canada in the Dance World Cup in Whistler, BC, July 2017. In the Spring of 2018, VAD’s Advanced Ballet class

were invited to compete at the Youth American Grand Prix Finals in New York, USA with Ms. Anabel’s innovative Chinese Ballet choreography

“Danse Chinoise”.

This summer, VAD soloists will be competing at the Dance Awards Nationals in Orlando, Florida, as well as the Spotlight Dance Cup Nationals in

Seaside, Oregon.

2018 - 2019 Highlights

FacultyANABEL HO - Artistic Director

Ms. Ho has taught and choreographed for the past twenty-seven years. Her training spans the globe and covers the full-spectrum of dance styles with emphasis in classical ballet and Chinese dance. Ms. Ho has trained with internationally noted artists in North America and abroad.

She is widely recognized by her many achievements around the world. Anabel has performed, taught, and choreographed throughout Canada and other regions including the U.S.A, China, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Poland, and Taiwan.

Ms. Ho’s credentials include: Royal Academy of Dance Examiner, Associate and Advanced Executant of the Royal Academy of Dance, Fully Registered Teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance, Associate of the Imperial Society Teachers of Dance (London, England) and Acrobatic Arts Certified Teacher.

Ms. Ho has presented command performances for her Majesty the Queen, Governor General and Prime Minister of Canada, as well as Royalties and Heads of State of many countries. She has been invited to adjudicate dance competitions throughout North America and has been commissioned to choreograph for several productions including: Rick Hansesn’s 100th Anniversary TV special on CBC, Nissan Go 2000 Dealership Convention, APEC Conference, International Dragon Boat Festival, Chinese Cultural Centre’s Millennium Project “Gold, Maple, Dreams” Dance Production, CBC’s Gung Haggis Fat Choy, and various other large events.

Anabel has also acted as a choreography consultant for National Ice Dancing Champions Meaghan Wing, and Erin Lowe. Ms. Ho produced dance performances for the movie “Deep Risings” and Buena Vista’s Vancouver promotions of the Disney movie “Mulan”. Ms. Ho was invited to choreograph for the Queen’s Royal Visit to B.C., the 2010 Sea to Sky Bid for the International Olympic Committee, the United Nations World Urban Forum Closing Ceremonies, CCTV’s New Year Special “The Same Song”, and for all the Premier’s of Canada for the launch of the Canadian Pavilion at the Beijing’s Olympics. Anabel was also selected as an advisor to the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and Paralympics. She directed and choreographed works presented to the International Olympic Committee, Governor General Michelle Jean, and the Premier Gordon Campbell for the IOC “Red Lanterns” was performed for Prime Minister Stephen Harper during his visit to Vancouver in celebrating of Chinese New Year 2010.

LISA HO - Advisor

Lisa is an accomplished dancer, singer, actor, and choreographer. Her background includes Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, Contemporary, Musical Theatre, and Chinese Dance. She is a graduate of VAD and the Strathcona Chinese Dance Company and has trained at prestigious dance schools including Toronto Dance

Theatre, The Dance Centre, and Beijing Dance Academy. She has garnered many awards as a dancer and choreographer and lived in New York, where she performed for the first National Tour of Shrek. Other credits include: A Chorus Line (Broadway), Mamma Mia! (Toronto), Miss Saigon (Arts Club Theater Company), High School Musical (NSMT), and ABC/Disney’s “Once Upon a Mattress.”

VALERIE “MS.VEE” HO - Advisor

Valerie Ho, also known as “Ms.Vee” is a multi-faceted dancer and performer whose movement background includes Hip Hop (Freestyle, Breaking, Popping, and Locking), House, Chinese, Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Modern, Swing, Salsa, Chinese Martial Arts (Wushu), Capoeria, Street Dance, and Hip-Hop culture. Vee has

studied with such greats as Mr.Wiggles, Skeeter Rabbit, Poppin’ Pete, Greg Camplerock Jr, Ken Swift, and Buddha Stretch, to name a few. Performance highlights include dancing for Queen Elizabeth II and in the Broadway and touring productions of Reenie Harris’ Legends of Hip Hop, performing with the renowned Hip-Hop companies MotopMusic and Movement and The Groovaloos, and touring the world with Strathcona Chinese Dance Company. As a dance instructor, she has a Bachelor’s of Education, Bachelor’s of Human Kinetics, and over 25 years of teaching with all levels and all ages, creating fun, challenging, and informative classes and workshops across North America and Asia. Ms. Vee currently resides in New York and is on faculty at Juilliard, Broadway Dance Center, Peridance Capezio Center and Pace University.

ANTHONY ORNATO Anthony Ornato, a graduate of VAD, a member of DeadBeat Ninjas, Project Soul, and Kinesix dance crews, has been teaching since 2008. Dancing has opened his mind to a world of art, and personal creation and improvement. Throughout the years of his training he has been fortunate enough to meet countless others

that share the same interests, whom are now his peers, support, and his inspiration to learn more. With the skills he has picked up, and the lessons he has been through along the way, the values that he has learned from being a dancer will stay with him forever.

BRITTANY WYLLIE

Since the age of 3, Brittany has been training and performing in many styles of dance. While continuing to grow as a dancer, she began teaching various styles including Acro, Jazz and Ballet while attending the accelerated post secondary Industry Dance Training Program of Vancouver. She has since had the privilege

to work for Carnival Cruise Lines, and Princess Cruise Lines where she had the opportunity to work with various choreographers and teachers from around the world. She is particularly proud to have been a part of the premier team for Stephen Shwartz’ “Born to Dance”. Brittany is excited to pass on her knowledge to our up and coming performers!

ANGELA KING

Angela is a Biological Science graduate from SFU and also received her 2nd bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. Angela started dancing at a young age and has extensively trained in ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, stage and musical theatre, and is also an accomplished

pianist and vocalist. Angela is a recipient of various scholarships and awards of merit and has competed in many local dance competitions as well as attending various dance conventions and workshops throughout the Lower Mainland and in the States. She teaches multiple dance disciplines to all ages and has choreographed for various competitive groups, solos, and duos. Her accomplishments include performing in the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. She has also appeared in many musical theatre productions. Selected credits include: High School Musical 2 (URP); Grease and The Wizard of Oz (FOOTLIGHT); Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen (Famous Artists); Will Rogers Follies, Holly Dolly, and Oklahoma! (RCMT); Singin’ in the Rain, Anything Goes, The Music Man, How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, and Legally Blonde (TUTS).

EMMA MISAK

Emma Misak is an up and coming bgirl from Surrey, BC. She has been dancing for 4 years and her love and passion for hip hop culture has led her to pass on her knowledge and skills to empower young students. Emma is active in the break dance and hip hop community, both locally and internationally. Recent accomplishments

include: Winning a silver medal at the Youth Olympics in Argentina for breaking, winning numerous break dance battles such as Surrey Secondary’s “Throwdown 2018”, “Step Into The Arena 2018”, and “Surrey youth Bgirl battle 2017”. Emma attended “Silverback open 2018” in Philadelphia, “Massive Monkees day 2017, 2018” in Seattle, “Superbreak 2018” in Japan, and “Rock Harder 2v2 2018” in Toronto. As an active performer her credits include: performing on the main stage at “WE DAY Vancouver 2015”, Surrey Steps Up events, and a cameo in a commercial for Wise Monkey Tea. Emma’s long term goal is to continue dancing and performing, along with a commitment to teach and inspire others.

JASMINE WANG Jasmine Wang is a professional dancer with 17 years of experience in Chinese classical dance, Chinese folk dance, ballet, and contemporary dance. She is a graduate from Minzu University of China majoring in Dance Performance. When she was a student, she

participated in large-scale performances in China, including CCTV. Not only has she traveled to Singapore for an International Dance Competition in 2011, she also represented China to perform in Russia. Jasmine has also worked and studied with dancers from Korea, Japan, America, and Spain, which further enhanced her knowledge of different cultures and styles. Furthermore, Jasmine also has taught students in a variety ages and dance styles and has led them to participate and win in competitions. During her school years at UBC, Jasmine has served as the UBC Ballet Club Vice President where she provided workshops for students and acted as the choreography consultant. Being a dance instructor for several years, Jasmine likes to provide a pleasant yet challenging classes for her students’ passion.

REGAN CALICETTO

Regan Calicetto is a renowned choreographer, performer, and dance educator in the Vancouver area. Training and performing in a variety of styles, including Acrobatics, Contemporary, Ballet, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Tap, she has worked for and alongside prominent figures in the dance world (Michelle Smith, Mia Michaels, Tiffany

Tregarthen and Tara-Jean Popowich, to name a few). This diverse exposure has helped Regan create her own personalized style that is sought after by artists around the globe. Internationally, Regan has performed, trained, and taught in the UK, Thailand, Australia, and New York, and has worked with such companies as Modus Operandi, Sweett Moves, The Underground Circus, and Lux Dance Company. Some of Regan’s highlights include performing as a principle role dancer in multiple productions of The Lover’s Cabaret, including “The Lovers of Hendrix” and “The Lovers of Zeppelin”. Regan has also performed as a company dancer in Sweett Moves’ “Bated Breath,” and in Kash Powell’s “International Dance Connection,” in London, UK. Regan’s versatility, individuality and heart has allowed her to push the boundaries of choreography and performance, creating a unique art that she brings to her community. Her work has made her a standout amongst her peers, having been recognized with numerous awards and acknowledgements for her outstanding choreography and performances. Regan now focuses mainly on acrobatics and tumbling, training dancers for Acrobatic Arts AcroDance exams. Regan continues to choreograph, perform, and teach internationally.

JAMIE TOWNSEND

Beginning her professional career at 15, Ms Jamie has extensive training in Mongolian Contortion, Aerial Silk & Lyra. Her dedication to her art has since given her the opportunity to perform at numerous high profile events across western canada & las vegas. Cirque du Soliel, - One Drop Foundation, BC fashion week, Masik Studios

& the 2010 Olympic opening ceremonies are a few of her most accomplished stage shows. She hopes to bring her knowledge of the industry to the minds of her students to inspire them to chase after their dreams with passion & how to make the right choices while transitioning into a professional career. Ms Jamie is also a certified bcrpa personal trainer, 200hr yoga instructor & lash extension artist, currently living in langley BC.

JUNIE HENG

Trained in RAD and ISTD methods, Junie has danced with renowned facilities across Canada as well as New York, Los Angeles, and Beijing. Her performance experience has brought her to stages worldwide and she brings to the Academy outstanding artistic and technical abilities. Ms. Junie has been a teacher of VAD for the past 20 years.

RYAN WILLIAMS

Ryan Williams, born in Surrey BC, is trained in street dance styles and commercial hip hop. His training includes SOULdiers Dance Company, directed by Kim Sato, Harbour Dance Centre’s MYM and KTL. After training in Las Vegas for an Elite Locking Camp, Ryan made top 16 in locking at Canada’s largest street dance event: Bust a Move 2014. Other credits include: Sonic Radio 104.9, TV’s Witches of East End Season 2 directed by Debbie Allen, Surrey School District, Jess Dance Co.

SARAH YEUNG

Born in Hong Kong, Sarah started her ballet training at the Jean M. Wong School of Ballet at the age of 3. In 2005, Sarah received the Dame Margot Fonteyn Award from the Tsinforn C. Wong Memorial Scholarship to attend the Hamburg Ballet School in Germany. After she graduated, she danced with Dreseden Semper Opera Ballet,

Germany and Dutch National Ballet, Holland and returned to Hong Kong in 2010 to complete further study at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She joined The Hong Kong Ballet in 2010 and in 2015 she joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Canada. Over her 10-year professional experience, she performed in many national theaters, including China, England, Germany, Holland, Spain, Italy, France, US and Canada and she was featured in major roles in classical productions like Big Swan in Swan Lake, Mercedes in Don Quixote, Sugar Plum Fairy in Nutcracker, Fairy in Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Paquita.

KOSTYA KESHYSHEV Born in Odessa, Ukraine Kostya began his ballet training has started at age of 11 with Odessa’s Ballet Academy. In 2003 he moved to Vancouver, Canada where he continued his training with The Goh Ballet Academy until the year 2007 in which he won a silver medal at the

Genee International Ballet Competition. At the age of 19, Kostya had joined The Hong Kong Ballet. His first principal role was the Nutcracker Prince which he received when he was 21 years old. Since then he has done roles such as: Prince Desire in Sleeping Beauty, Albrecht in Giselle, Siegfried in Swan Lake. In 2015, Kostya moved to Winnipeg, Canada and started working with The Royal Winnipeg Ballet where he preformed roles of Dracula, Gordon in Going Home Star and many more. In 2017, he moved back to Vancouver and started pursuing a career in teaching and participated in Vaganova’s Teachers Training course which was held in Riga, Latvia the same year.

HANNAH THERESA Originally from New Brunswick, Hannah Theresa is a versatile dancer who graduated from the Commercial Dance Studies Program at George Brown College in Toronto. She continued her training in Melbourne, AUS at the Space Arts and Dance Centre and Dance

Factory, and completed the Certificate Program at Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles. She also completed training sessions with Army of Sass and Toronto B-Girl Movement. Hannah has performed at many public and private events in Toronto including Miss Universe Canada (emiMOTION), NUMBERS Toronto Fringe & remount (Kokus Productions), Rich Bride Poor Bride (Diamond Dancers & Slice), Legally Blonde the Musical (Curtain Call Players), and performed at various events such as Dance Ontario Weekend, and Toronto’s Choreographer’s Ball. Hannah has had the opportunity to choreograph for Pride Toronto including World Pride (Sapphire Dance Productions), and music video Zemons – KaC Himself (Wango Films under the direction of April Mullen). Hannah also has a love for children’s theatre. She toured across Canada with KOBA Entertainment and took on the roles of rehearsal director and dance captain for Toopy and Binoo & the Marshmallow Moon (French and English). Hannah also co-writes and directs Santa’s Elves Sing-Along for the Toronto Christmas Market each year. When not performing, Hannah enjoys sharing her passion of dance through teaching and has worked with studios and companies throughout Toronto and New Brunswick. She is looking forward to teaching and performing in Vancouver and to see what the city has to offer!
