1 8 Newsletter No. 25 - Term 3 Week 5 16 August 2018 From the Acting Principal Production Parent Helper Morning Tea We are very much looking forward to hosting a special morning tea for our amazing Production Parent Helpers. We look forward to celebrating with you all at recess in the staffroom tomorrow. National Science Week at Kalinda Primary School ‘Game Changers and Change Makers’ Thank you to everyone, and especially our very own ‘ Mad Professor’, Mr Booth, for making National Science Week at Kalinda Primary School another wonderful showcase of the teaching and learning undertaken at our school. The week began with an explosion of science with volcanic eruptions in Grade 1/2; we were wowed by larva lamps, we have had to duck for cover from aeronautically designed paper planes, and even explored the presence of science in the kitchen as our Foundation students learnt about physical change by turning cream into delicious butter. We are all very much looking forward to Friday’s announcement of Kalinda’s winning student inventions. I am very excited to view the innovations our students have designed to change their own or someone else’s life. Please also remind your children about our Friday lunchtime Science Film Festival where students will have the chance to view some of the winners of the 2018 Scinema International Science Film Festival. We really do love celebrating teaching and learning at Kalinda Primary School and our 2018 Book Week Celebration Day is just two weeks away! We will be celebrating Book Week on Friday 31 st August with a very special performance entitled TREASURE HUNT! The performance is interactive and explores the issues of sustainability and our relationship with the natural environment as well as celebrating how books and reading can create understanding and bring people of different backgrounds together.

National Science Week at Kalinda Primary School –

‘Game Changers and Change Makers’ Thank you to everyone, and especially our very own ‘Mad Professor’, Mr Booth, for making National Science Week at Kalinda Primary School another wonderful showcase of the teaching and learning undertaken at our school. I am very excited to view the innovations our students have designed to change their own or someone else’s life. Please also remind your children about our Friday lunchtime Science Film Festival where students will have the chance to view some of the winners of the 2018 Scinema International Science Film Festival.

We really do love celebrating teaching and learning at Kalinda Primary School and our

2018 Book Week Celebration Day is just two weeks away!

We will be celebrating Book Week on Friday 31st August with a very special performance entitled TREASURE HUNT! The performance is interactive and explores the issues of sustainability and our relationship with the natural environment as well as celebrating how books and reading can create understanding and bring people of different backgrounds together.

As is tradition at Kalinda PS on our Book Week Celebration Day, we would love all students to come dressed in

theme. The theme for Book Week 2018 is "Find your Treasure". Like me, the first thing that may come to mind

for you when you think of this theme is pirates! Of course, not all treasure is in the form of a pirate's booty! Your "treasure" could be your favourite book. Your "treasure" could also be a literary character that has inspired you in some way. If Spiderman is idolized in your household, you can dress up as him, or any number of other comic book superheroes! The options are endless with this theme, you just have to get creative!

Wishing all families, a wonderful weekend! ERIN NORMAN ACTING PRINCIPAL 2018 PARENT OPINION SURVEY - WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK! Recently, a random selection of parents were invited to participate in this year’s Parent Opinion Survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The Parent Opinion Survey was opened online on Monday 23rd July and will remain open until Sunday 26th August. We would very much appreciate parents completing the survey, which only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. The information gained from this survey will help us to plan curriculum programs for the next few years. Please feel free to ring us if you would like more information.

FAMILIES LEAVING KALINDA As we are heading towards the end of the year, we will soon be planning classes for 2019. If your family is intending to leave Kalinda at the end of the year, or before, please let us know by email to [email protected] or send in a note to the office. It would be very much appreciated if this could be done as soon as possible so that grades for next year can be organised.

FINE DINING OPPORTUNITY

Saturday 18th August from 10.00am. Our Executive Chef, Ted, will be preparing a fine dining experience not to be missed. Served in the al fresco dining room with a grand view of the Kalinda Art Room, no bookings are required and all tools etc are supplied to help prepare for a meal consisting of as many courses as you and your young diners can complete. No fancy attire required, our dress code is pretty informal and the cost of the free lunch is no more than a couple of hours to help clean up the play areas and gardens. We will even do all the dishes for you afterwards! Hope to see you there from 10am to 12noon this Saturday. TED & FACILITIES COMMITTEE
