State-of-the-Art UV LED Curing System

The VersaUV series includes two solid state UV LED lamps that offer many advantages over conventional UV lamps.

- Longer life – the LED lamps on the VersaUV series last up to 10,000 hours, ten times longer than

conventional UV lamps.

- Low heat and highly energy efficient – while conventional UV lamps can reach temperatures as high as

1500°F (800°C), LED lamps are extremely energy efficient and generate very little heat. This virtually

eliminates all risks associated with high heat such as damages to the substrate and head crashes caused

by media deformation.

- Instant On/Off – LED lamps can be turned on and off instantly and are ready to use immediately after the

printer is turned on. Conventional curing systems may take up to ten minutes to reach the nominal output

level and require complex, noisy and failure-prone shutter systems to protect the substrate and the

head’s capping system from exposure to heat and UV radiation.

The LEC-540 sports the new dual position LED curing system that is optimized for curing at the fastest print modes and enables the choice of gloss or matte finishing options with clear coat. For normal printing or matte finish, both lamps are used in an inline curing configuration. This configuration instantly cures the ink droplets which form a rough surface that scatters light. When gloss finish is selected, the left lamp moves forward and only this lamp is used for curing. This delayed curing configuration allows droplets of clear coat to spread and form a smooth surface that reflects the light evenly. The LED lamps on the LEC-330/300A are fixed and arranged in staggered configuration.

Advanced ECO-UV Inks

ECO-UV ink was especially formulated for the VersaUV family of printer/cutters to deliver high color density and wide gamut for exceptional images print after print. ECO-UV ink is instant-drying and flexible, producing prints that can be stretched and applied around curved surfaces and edges without cracking. Clear coat can produce an unprecedented high gloss finish and improve scratch and chemical resistance and outdoor durability. Although ECO-UV ink is not intended for long term outdoor use without proper UV protection

1, it shines in indoor applications

1 Liquid lamination is recommended. Overlaminate is not recommended because differences in ink densities can create reliefs

that can trap air inside.

Both lamps are used for curing but the lamps are fixed and staggered.

Delayed curing – Only the left (right on LEC-300A) lamp, which is mounted forward, is used for curing

such as labels, packaging and POP. In outdoor applications, ECO-UV ink lasts up to two years when flooded with the clear coat and up to 6 months unprotected. Room ventilation and Roland approved air filtration system are required. Please consult the MSDS for more guidance on the proper use of ECO-UV inks.

Unsurpassed Media Compatibility

ECO-UV ink adheres to a wide range of treated and untreated substrates including Banner, Canvas, PVC, PET, BOPP, Polypropylene, metallic, foils, paper, shrink films and much more, with exceptional image quality.

The low heat UV LED lamps allow for printing on heat-sensitive media such as shrink wrap, pressure sensitive media and paper stocks with no risk of damaging the substrate.

The ingenious combination of advanced ECO-UV inks with low heat state-of-the-art UV LED lamps enables VersaUV printer/cutters to print on virtually any substrate delivering an unprecedented range of media compatibility and print quality.

Flexible Ink Configuration Options for Unmatched Versatility

All three LEC models support the exclusive 6-color CMYK + White + Clear ink configuration. The LEC-540 and LEC-330 support two additional ink configurations

2: CMYK + dual White and CMYK + dual Clear coat, elevating the

device’s capabilities to new levels.

Still the most versatile ink configuration, CMYK + White + Clear can be used for a wide range of applications including packaging prototypes, labels, offset proofs with spot varnish and unique textured graphics. White ink is ideal for producing rich, dense color graphics on clear and metallic substrates. Clear coat can be used as a spot gloss or matte highlights, or to coat the entire image for a high-gloss finish, or overprinted for simulating embossing and other three-dimensional textures.

Ideal for applications that require high opacity white, the CMYK + dual White

3 mode achieves opacities up to 1.5 times

higher than the single white configuration. This translates into a significant improvement in productivity and simpler workflow since no overprinting or multiple file setups are required in order to achieve higher white opacity.

The CMYK + dual Clear mode can build up three-dimensional textures twice as fast as the normal ink mode and can produce more dramatic effects with bigger reliefs. This ink configuration is also perfect for users that do not require white ink printing since the Ink Circulation System and the ink discharge cycles are completely disabled resulting in zero white ink waste.

2 The ink configuration MUST be selected during the initial installation and cannot be changed once the lines have been filled

with ink. Please consult the Setup Guide on how to select the right ink mode. 3 The amount of ink discharged by the Ink Circulation System can be higher with this ink configuration as both lines are

monitored for consumption and discharged if any single line meets the discharge criteria.

Print Modes Sample applications

Patent-Pending Intelligent Ink Circulation System

It is a well-known fact that white ink contains heavy pigments that can settle over time, decreasing the density of white output and impacting the nozzles if not purged from the system periodically. This innovative patent-pending system circulates the white and clear

4 inks to prevent the settling of pigments in the lines. In addition, this system

controls the discharge of white ink and minimizes waste by monitoring the white ink’s usage and the types of jobs that are printed. An ink discharge cycle will not be executed unless all of the following conditions are met: (1) the printer receives a job with white data, (2) 8 hours or more have passed since the last ink discharge, (3) less than 7.5 ml on LEC-540/330 or 3.75 ml on LEC-300A of white ink has been consumed during this period. Operators can further optimize the ink usage by scheduling the production of jobs with white data within this 8 hour window. The table on the following page summarizes the amount of ink that is purged when an ink discharge cycle is executed.

4 Although clear ink does not contain pigments to settle, the clear line is also circulated. This is due to the printer’s design

which supports dual white ink.

Total Amount of Ink Discharged (White and Clear combined)

Elapsed time from previous ink discharge cycle

LEC-540 LEC-330 LEC-300A

0 to 8 hours 0 ml 0 ml 0 ml

More than 8 hours 15 ml 15 ml 7.5 ml

By preventing unnecessary discharges and minimizing the amount of ink that is subject to settling, this automated system significantly reduces ink waste and eliminates the daily and bi-weekly Ink Renewal cycles that were required with earlier generations of white ink capable Roland printers. Note that the white ink cartridge still needs to be shaken prior to use each day as the ink in the cartridge is not circulated by this system.

The Ink Circulation System is completely disabled and no ink discharge cycle is executed when the printer is configured with CMYK + dual Clear coat.

Versatile Dual Purpose Media Feed System

The LEC-540 comes with a new front mounted two-way sliding table and a horizontally mounted rear cover to provide support for thicker semi-rigid stocks such as card stocks and polycarbonate sheets. The table can be retracted to open up a gap between the table and the printer platen, allowing for a roll or a flexible media to be fed as a regular roll-to-roll printer. This dual purpose design provides maximum flexibility and compatibility with a wide variety of sheeted or rolled substrates. The LEC-330/300A comes with a sheet friendly ventilation hood that allows semi-rigid stocks to be fed straight through its opening.

The LEC-540 uses the proven heavy-duty media holder system available on Roland VersaArt RS printers and VersaCAMM VS printer/cutters. This system prevents skewing and possible miss-feeds to ensure stable media feeding even for long print runs. The LEC-540 handles rolls weighing up to 66 lbs (30 kg) and up to 8.3” (210 mm) in diameter. The LEC-330/300A comes with the popular media flange system for rolls weighing up to 44 lbs (20 kg) and up to 7.1” (180 mm) in diameter.

LEC-540 Media Support System

Thick sheet stocks Flexible/thin sheet stocks Roll-to-roll

LEC-330/300A Sheet Stock Friendly Ventilation Hood

Media Clamp System

The LEC-540 comes with long media clamps that are detected by the printer. The printer will not allow a sheet cut to be performed until they are removed, saving the user from accidentally performing the sheet cut over the media clamps.

The LEC-330/300A comes with short and long sets of media clamps. When using the long media clamps, the MEDIA CLAMP menu item must be set to LONG which disables the sheet cut feature.

Advanced Media Take-Up System

The VersaUV series includes an automated media feed and take-up system to facilitate precise unattended printing. This pre-assembled unit includes an advanced tension-controlled take-up system for optimum media feed and tracking. When properly configured, this system also allows print and cut jobs

5 such as labels and

decals to be run unattended protecting the output from the dirt or dust on the floor.

Enhanced Media Presets

The VersaUV series includes a wizard based media settings

6 menu that walks

the user through all the necessary adjustments to ensure optimal print quality and accurate cutting. All these adjustments can be saved as a Media Preset that can be quickly reloaded when the same media is reloaded. When invoked, it reconfigures all printing and cutting parameters with the pre-calibrated values, saving time and money by minimizing the chances of user error. Up to 8 Media Presets can be saved and named accordingly for easy identification.

5 It is recommended to select CustomCUT with a page size in VersaWorks that does not exceed 12” (30 cm) in length to avoid

the printed face from touching the floor. The LEC-330/300A will support this feature with the firmware 4.10 or later. 6 The LEC-330/300A will support this feature with the firmware 4.10 or later.

Designed for the Environment and Safety

The energy efficient VersaUV series uses only a fraction of the power used by a conventional UV printer. The VersaUV series is also Energy Star certified and automatically enters a low power mode when it is not used for an extended period of time. This energy efficient design literally saves thousands of dollars in electric bills each year and reduces considerably the emission of greenhouse gases.

Traditional UV curing equipment can expose operators to ozone and harmful UV-B and UV-C radiation. Ozone is a known air pollutant that can cause lung damage and respiratory problems. UV-B and UV-C radiation can cause eye damage, skin cancer and accelerated skin aging. The LED lamps on the VersaUV printers are completely ozone-free and only emit the much safer UV-A radiation.

The LEC family is ventilation-ready, featuring a hood for easy connection with an air filtration system.

Creasing Tool and Perforation Tool (LEC-540 only)

In addition to the standard 45 degree blade and blade holder, the LEC-540 includes a 60 degree carbide blade and a newly developed creasing tool that work exceptionally well for folding carton applications. These new tools, in addition to the white ink capability and support for both semi-rigid and flexible substrates, make the LEC-540 the perfect tool for the package prototyping (folding carton and flexible packaging) market.

Roland VersaWorks RIP Software

VersaWorks RIP software has been exclusively developed for Roland inkjet printers and printer/cutters. This true Adobe PostScript 3 RIP ensures exceptional production output with unmatched ease of use.

VersaWorks incorporates the latest Adobe CPSI engine 3019 for faster processing, better color and smoother gradations and can control up to four Roland devices including GX series cutters.

VersaWorks features the Roland Color System for spot color matching, Variable Data Printing for customized job output, ink consumption and print time estimation, and the Max Impact preset for richer color

contrast, outstanding image quality and maximum productivity. VersaWorks also includes the Roland Texture Library featuring 72 ready-to-use textures that can be applied to designs by layering the LEC’s clear coat ink. For white ink applications, you can select from either single pass or dual pass modes.

The LEC-540 will ship initially with VersaWorks 4.17. Other models may ship with an earlier version of VersaWorks

but it can be updated to the latest version online. VersaWorks 4.1 is available free of charge for all existing users through Roland@NET, an online automatic update system that always keeps the software up-to-date.

For high end color critical applications, support for color proofing with CGS Color Tuner // Web, EFI Fiery and ColorProof XF, and GMG ColorProof and FlexoProof/DotProof ensure that outputs produced with the LEC meet the highest color accuracy and quality standards.

Roland OnSupport (LEC-540 Only)

Roland OnSupport is an online support portal that provides real time feedback on the user’s machine. This system monitors ink levels and provides access to manuals and software updates, how-to guides, preventive maintenance guides, machine usage metrics and periodic updates to firmware. It sends notifications to the user’s cell phone or e-mail address and allows the user to both manage their productivity and gain direct feedback from Roland.

Two-Year Trouble-Free Warranty

Roland inkjets combine unbeatable performance with legendary Roland reliability. As further proof of their unmatched reliability, Roland offers a Two‐Year Trouble‐Free Warranty for the VersaUV series when equipped exclusively with Roland inks if the warranty is registered within 60 days of delivery.

7 VersaWorks must be installed from the original DVD that is included with the printer unless a new version is available. Do not

use an older installation of VersaWorks updated to the latest version through Roland@NET as it may not include all the necessary files for new printers.
