Evoqua Water Technologies, LLC Standard Products SU5320-020 Page 1 Rev. 8, March 2019 Product Description/Equipment Specifications Vantage ® PTC Series Carbon Filters Model PTCC General Description: PTC Series carbon filters reliably remove chlorine and chloramines from the feedwater by filtering the water through a bed of activated carbon. Many processes, like reverse osmosis and demineralization, must have the chlorine removed from their feedwater to protect the membranes and resin from oxidative attack. The use of activated carbon provides an effective means to protect equipment from chlorine exposure. Activated carbon can also reduce the level of some organics in the feedwater by operating at reduced flows. A gravel bed supports the single layer of activated carbon. Any trapped suspended solids and carbon fines are easily removed during the wash cycle without disrupting the gravel bed. Three packages are available: Economy, Plus, and Deluxe. Mechanical Description: The PTC Series vessel is a corrosion resistant composite constructed of a polyethylene shell wound with continuous fiberglass fibers. The shell height is designed to allow for expansion of the media during the wash cycle. The top vessel opening is used for media loading and connection for the multiport control valve. The filter is supplied with high quality Carbon V 12 x 40 Coal AW 27 #PB media and underdrain support media. The support media ensures even flow distribution. The inlet diffuser evenly distributes influent water and collects backwash water. The lower hub and lateral or single point distributor (depending upon tank size) collects effluent and distributes backwash water. Each vessel is fitted with a top-mounted multi-port control valve (or a side-mounted multiport control valve on 36” – 48” diameter vessels with the tripod base) to accomplish the operational steps of the service and wash cycle. The control valve includes fixed and self-adjusting flow regulators to control flow rates during each operational cycle. The steps of the wash cycle are accomplished with the movement of a hydraulically balanced piston. The piston is the only wetted moving part in the main control valve. The Economy trim package consists of a Simplex unit with a Series 5812 Fleck valve (composite valve) with an SXT controller. This valve is a “hard water bypass” configuration. The Plus trim package consists of a simplex unit with a lead free brass bodied Fleck valve (2750 or 3150) or stainless steel bodied Fleck valve (2815) with a mechanical time clock controller. The Deluxe trim package upgrades the Plus to an NXT2 controller and is offered in Simplex, Duplex, Triplex, and Quadplex configurations. Both Plus and Deluxe are “no hard water bypass” (NHWBP) systems. The Deluxe trim package is also offered with 3” Clack valve (2869-WS3 with equivalent controller) which comes with NHWBP valve. Proper engineering of the total flow requirements must be taken into account when sizing the system. All flows required, including backwash for the softener and any other requirements for downstream equipment must be considered.

Electrical Description: Economy Package: The control function is performed by an SXT programmable controller. This controller features a power backup system that continues to keep time for a minimum of 48 hours in the event of a power failure. The system configuration is stored in a non-volatile memory so will be maintained indefinitely, with or without power. The Carbon filter will wash based on time, which is initiated by a seven (7) day cycle timer that can be set on any hour within a 24-hour period and initiated on any or all days in the 7-day period. The operator can manually initiate wash at any time. Water is available during the wash cycle due to the hard water bypass configuration. Plus Package: The control function is performed by a mechanical time clock controller. The filter will wash based on time, which is initiated by a seven (7) day cycle timer that can be set on any hour within a 24-hour period and initiated on any or all days in the 7-day period. The operator can manually initiate wash at any time. No water is available during the wash cycle. A micro-switch is included in the valve to send a lockout signal to downstream equipment during the wash cycle. Deluxe Package: The control function is performed by an NXT2 programmable controller for the fleck valve and by an equivalent controller for the clack valve. The filter will wash based on either an external initiation (i.e. differential pressure switch or a PLC) or time, which is initiated as programmed. If a differential pressure switch is used (not available on System 14), only one is require per system and wash cycles are performed sequentially. The operator can manually initiate wash at any time. On Simplex units, no water is available during the wash cycle. A micro-switch is included in the valve to send a lockout signal to downstream equipment during the wash cycle. Duplex, Triplex, and Quadplex systems will continue to provide water to the downstream equipment. Operational Description: PTC carbon filters have two modes of operation: service and wash. While in the service mode, treated water is delivered to downstream equipment. The wash mode is comprised of three steps: backwash, settle, and rinse. The backwash step expands the carbon and removes any trapped particulates and carbon fines. The settle step allows the bed to settle. The rinse step flushes the bed and prepares it for the service mode. Economy and Plus units operate in a System Type 00 (“Simplex”) configuration. Deluxe units can operate in a System Type 04, 06 or 14 configurations. A summary of all system types and descriptions has been included below.

System 00 - Simplex - This system is utilized for all Economy/Plus trim packaged Simplex filters. During Wash cycle, hard water bypasses the filter (Economy only). The Economy trim package is controlled by a SXT controller while the Plus trim package is controlled by a mechanical time clock. System 00 will not be shown in the SXT or Time Clock controller – it is just a name provided to differentiate the Economy and Plus trims with the Deluxe trim for Simplex operation. System 04 - Simplex - This system is utilized for all Deluxe trim packaged Simplex filters. During the Wash cycle, no water is available downstream. A micro-switch is included in the valve to send a lockout signal to downstream equipment during the Wash cycle. The systems have either a time clock or volume initiated Wash cycle. System 06 – Parallel - This system is available for use on all Deluxe trim packaged Duplex, Triplex, and Quadplex filters operating in parallel. All filters will be in the service mode until a wash cycle is initiated when the preset volume of water has been treated. At that time the first unit (with the primary valve) will perform a wash cycle while the remaining units will be maintained in service mode. At the completion of the wash cycle, the first unit will return to service mode. Then, one at a time, the subsequent units will go in to a wash cycle mode and, once the wash is complete, return to service mode. One flowmeter is required at the outlet pipe. System 14 – Demand or Progressive flow system – This system is utilized for Deluxe trim packaged Duplex, Triplex, and Quadplex filters. One unit will be in service at all times. The remaining units will be activated if the flow demand increases and return to standby mode once the flow demand reduces. When the preset volume has been treated, the corresponding unit will go in to wash cycle mode while other units will be in service mode or offline depending on the demand flowrate. The flow meter is reset to zero when the filter initiates the wash cycle. This system will require one flowmeter per valve for its operation. For filter tanks with a single piston valve (i.e., 1’’ - 2750, 1.5’’ – 2815 & 2” – 3150) a diaphragm solenoid valve is required for its operation. This valve will be automatically included when a System 14 is selected. For the 3” valve (2869-WS3), a NHWBP valve will perform the same operation as that of the diaphragm solenoid valve and is automatically added to the BOM. Additional information is provided at the end of this document as a guide.

Remote Wash Initiation Kit Based on Differential Pressure: This kit interfaces with the Deluxe Trim Package only (Not available with System Type 14). The use of a differential pressure switch to initiate a Backwash cycle will ensure that backwashes are initiated only when required. This switch is recommended for all installations where the backwash timing (with respect to downstream processes) is not critical. Only one differential pressure switch per system (simplex through quadplex) is required as the unit backwash cycle will be performed in a consecutive sequence. The pressure switch should nominally be set for 12 psid greater than the clean bed operating differential pressure. The Differential Pressure Kit W3T81816 includes the pressure switch, gauges, and miscellaneous installation components. Refer to Option Kit Drawing SU5303-370ZXXX for more detail.

Optional Installation Kit: The Optional Installation Kit (ordered separately) is selected based on valve size. A separate kit is provided for the side mount 3’’ valve. The respective W3T part numbers will be multiplied based on the selected configuration (Simplex – Quadplex).
