Synopsis

Tag line The song has ended, but the melody lingers on.

One-line synopsis On what would have been his mother’s birthday, an eager 12-year-old Cody sets out to perform her lullaby against the wishes of his grieving father.

One Paragraph Synopsis12 year old Cody Walker lives in a rusty station wagon on the outskirts of town with his father, Lou. Cody spends most of his spare time practicing guitar secretly in order to perform a particular song – his late mother’s lullaby. A gruff and weary Lou, however, refuses to allow him to play and dwell on her memory. Lou believes he has created a world for Cody ‘unburdened’ by grief, where he can retain his innocence. Upon news of their departure, Cody must fight to keep the last connection he has to his mother alive by performing at the local open mic.

Director’s Statement

My Nan is my greatest inspiration; I simply would not be the person I am without her by my side. She sang a lullaby to me from before I could walk up until her passing in 2015. To this day, the wistful tune conjures up my most profoundly joyful, unself-conscious, comfortable memories of childhood. Her passing affected me and my father deeply, it was eye opening to see that he was just as scared, just confused as me.

With Little Man, I wanted to explore the very primal, deeply personal and confronting experience of grief, to communicate the strength in sharing vulnerability. To tell younger versions of me that nobody really has it figured out, that in this crazy world, everyone is travelling.

I also wanted to explore the effect of masculine ideology which is why I chose to tell the story through the eyes of 12-year-old Cody Walker. The primal curiosity he holds is ultimately what allows keep fighting for his mother and father. Through this determination, he is able to lift the weight of existential angst his father carries.

Producer’s Statement

Every once in a while, we come across a script or a concept that touches our hearts. Little Man is one of those films. When I first hear Nicholas explaining the concept of a boy wanting to sing his dead mother’s lullaby, against the wishes of his father, I got chills. I personally haven’t experienced a lot of death in my life, but the story resonated me with another level. The desperate need for Cody to sing his mother’s lullaby in front of a crowd, going against his grieving father, meant to me that you should never give up on something you really want to do. This is why Little Man will resonate and relate to a large audience.

As a producer, I thoroughly enjoyed being part of creating such a challenging film. I will forever remember this film.

Cast Biographies

Dean Reid – LouDean hadn’t thought much about acting until a year ago when he was questioning what he would really love to do with his life, after having major changes to his lifestyle. He has always loved film and the creative process. He was always drawn to watch behind the scenes sections of the DVD over the actual film. It was after he had been auditioning for a few TV commercials that he got to know a great casting director who suggested he should join his LA tour late last year. He did and that was the clincher. He has loved everything he saw and learnt about the industry. He finds acting a great outlet and fun challenge.

Dean was drawn to the character of Lou, as the story resonates with him, after losing his mother to leukaemia when he was 19.

“I saw this as a beautiful story of hope and support between a father and son and thought that it would be a role that would challenge me.”

His favourite scene to shoot was the opening scene at the beach. He enjoyed playing around the natural physical reactions to what was happening and the intensity of the scene.

“I think because of the location, the other cast and the challenge of getting this scene right, I found it the most rewarding.”

He enjoyed watching Sol asking the crew between takes about their different roles. “He was so curious, it was adorable to watch.”

Dean’s favourite childhood snack was an apple turnover from the tuck shop at school.

Sol Castanho – CodySol started acting because he enjoyed exploring the minds of other types of people and learning to develop characters. He enjoys acting as an art form and he finds it rewarding to produce great art.

Sol was drawn to the character of Cody he is a powerful character; he was relentless to talk about his mother and connect with his father again. He also liked the style of film and Nicholas’s approach in directing it.

The most rewarding scene for Sol was the final scene at the pub as it was an emotionally intense scene. The cold outside night air also contributed to the reward of finishing the day. His best memory from set was the nights filmed with the car in the forest.

“The set looked really cool and surreal and I really like the style of the car.”

Sol’s favourite snacks are waffles and donuts. “I really like the mix of dough and sugar.”

Kimberley Chapman – JohannaHaving been born into a family of performers, acting has been something Kimberley has always and will always love. To her, the creative arts are unique and wonderful vehicles for promoting change, using the oldest and most effective method of communication ever: storytelling. This speaks to the heart of her as a person and how she wants to engage with the world.

Kimberly was drawn to the character of Johanna as music has been a big part of her life particularly in an inter-generational sense; the idea of passing on memories through the use and love of music is one she has grown up with. She had a deep understanding of Johanna’s family’s grief, and she loved the way the film explores the association between music and memory.

“I loved [the film’s] acceptance of the intangible and inexplicable.”

Kimberley’s favourite childhood snack was anything that could be packed in and then eaten out of a picnic basket.

Lotta Josefiina Kytomaki – Produceris a Finnish - Australian filmmaker. Growing up in Finland till the age of eleven, Lotta was heavily involved in the visual and performing arts. This continued throughout her schooling in Australia, where she found her passion towards film and new media at Sheldon College. Lotta’s passion lies mainly in script writing and production management. She also enjoys script supervising, working on multiple masters’ films whilst completing her bachelor degree.

From the very first class of the degree, she has always put her hand up to produce any project, from short films to documentaries.

“Little Man has been the most difficult yet rewarding film to produce, but I can’t wait to see it get into festivals and be able to say that I took part in making that film.”

Nicholas Allison – Writer/Directoris a 21-year-old, New Zealand born, Australian raised filmmaker.

His questionable choice to explore visual storytelling flourished when he was given the ability to upload and share content to YouTube at age 13.

His passion continued throughout his highschooling, however, it was his final year when he began to consider seriously pursuing the craft. During his time at film school, Nicholas has continued to hone in on writing and directing specifically. Being able to use writing as a tool to empathise with different perspectives has become his goal.

“The short film Little Man has been the most ambitious character driven story I’ve had the opportunity to tell, I’m so excited to be able to present it to the people who have helped make it a reality”.

Guy Crofts – Cinematographer/ColouristGuy Crofts started making films when he was 13 years old. Quickly growing fond of the medium, he continued to study and learn throughout his time at ACGS.

As he left high school, he won awards for his senior short film and his senior art film.

Since then, he’s worked on a plethora of films. On many of these he has worked as a Cinematographer. He chose to specialise in cinematography as he went into film school.

He also has experience working as a VFX artist, colourist, Camera op, AC and lighting assistant.

“Making Little Man is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It felt like everything was against us, but we made it through the storm and I’m so damn proud of what we’ve come out with.”

Kate Bartlett – Production DesignerAfter watching enough KickThePj videos for a lifetime, I feel in love with production design. Once I started focusing on it at University, I only enjoyed it more. Production design is one of the most intense problem solving jobs on a film set and I was honoured to be a part of Little Man.

My favourite aspect of the film is the colour palette I created. The key inspiration for this was The Graduate, as they used only 4 colours or so throughout the entire film, which impressed me to no ends and was my goal for the year in the two films I made. I believe in Little Man I pulled this off with the few pastels and murky colours of the world we created.

I have never been more proud to be part of a film and more impressed with my own work.

Matthew Jennings - EditorMatthew has had a passion for filmmaking since high school. In his Visual Art class instead of painting, drawing or printing, Matthew always tried to submit a small film projects or pieces of photography for all of his assessment.

This lead him to Griffith Film School and since starting here has worked on short student films, commercial work, music videos and some feature work. Matthew has a wide skill set but has found passion for cinematography and editing.

Matthew is the editor on Little Man and alongside director Nick Allison helped to shape the story and create a tone for the film in the post process which was a long but ultimately very enjoyable journey.

Nick Tomkins – ComposerI am an electrical engineering student with a passion for creating music, which I probably started doing as early as fourteen.

The song Little Man took inspiration from the rawness of folk and the innocence of a children’s lullaby. My intention was for it to convey the importance of family and perseverance. It was really exciting to try and capture the emotions that the young protagonist was feeling throughout as, for a child even the smallest things can feel huge.

Overall, I think working so closely with the director helped the music capture a very specific and cohesive artistic vision, and then keeping this consistent between both audio and video. This was definitely a vision that the director was passionate about and I thoroughly enjoyed being part of it.
