From the Conference Chairs ... Western Users ofSAS Software (WUSS) presents these Proceedings from their ninth annual Conference. WUSS 2001 was held September 5-7 at the Grand Hyatt on Union Square in San Francisco, California SAS users attended from all the WUSS region's states of Arizona. California, Colorado, Hawaii. Nevada, and Utah, as well as many otheiS, especially from our neighboring Pacific Norlhwest region (PNWSUO). The SAS users who attended WUSS 2001 bad an opportunity to increase their SAS knowledge and leam new SAS techniques, tips, and tricks. This year's conference presented hot topics and outstanding presentations in an information-packed fonnat. beginning with Paul Kent's keynote address, "SAS - still relevant after all these years?" Paul is the Director of Base SAS Research at SAS and is a great speaker.

The conference ran from Wednesday at 1:00 through Friday at 1:00 including lunchtime activities on Thursday. Attendees could choose from more than 120 paper presentations, Hands-on Workshops. Demos, and Statistical Seminars. Code Doctors diagnosed coding ills in the Code Clinic, while the SAS Exhibit and Demo Area let attendees check out the latest innovations from SAS "up close and personal."

And as if that wasn't enough teaming, pre- and post-WUSS half-day classes were offered both Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon as well as full-day classes on Tuesday and Saturday. For the first time, some of these classes were in a hands-on workshop format We also mixed in some fun and relaxation with SAS Savvy (Jeopardy0 style trivia game) and the WUSS Happening Mixer which allowed serious networking with other SAS users "close to home."

WUSS 2001 marked the first Children's Book Drive at WUSS. To continue the good work started at SUOI26, where books were collected for needy children in Southern CA, WUSS 2001 sponsored a Children's Book Drive to benefit needy children in Northern CA WUSS attendees dropped off new (and gently used) books at the registration area during the conference. The books were distributed to reading centers in shelters, community centers, lending h"braries, and hospitals.

We would like to thank the following: • SAS, for the support and guidance they always provide. Both were essential to the success ofWUSS 2001. In

particular, we would like to thank Ken Bland. Users Group Liaison, who was consistently responsive, patient, and helpful as we prepared for WUSS 2001. We also profusely thank SAS FOR KINDLY PRINTING AND ASSEMBLING 1HESE PROCEEDINGS.

• The Conference Committee and the Executive Committee, who worked diligently on WUSS 2001 ... these people, listed on the next page, consistently and generously gave their time, creativity, and persistence to make WUSS 2001 a success.

• Speakers, session coordiJJators, judges, and attendees- all of whom were essential to a great conference!

The conference planners hope that you benefited from your conference experience, and that you bad the opportunity to

Keep Your SAS Career on Track!!

See you in San Diego for WUSS 2002!
