  • What is CAD?

    CAD: Computer Aided Design

Difference between CAD and computer aided

    drawing

  • Product life cycle

Begin with customers and markets demands

    Two main processes

    Design

    Manufacturing

  • Design = Design Methodology + Design Tools

    Design Methodology

    Mechanical Graphing

    Principle of Mechanics

    Mechanical Design

    interchangeability and measurement

Mechanical Engineering Material & heat treatment

    Basis of Machine Manufacture Techniques

    Design Tools

  • Design tool: AutoCAD, Inventor and MDT

Autodesk: Founded in 1982. A leader in 2D design

    AutoCAD:

The most widely used 2D design software, and accounting for

    37% of the market

Focus on basic geometric modeling and drafting

Have strong functions in drawing, editing, dimensioning,

    tolerancing and programming

    Have some 3D modeling functions

MDT (Mechanical Desktop) and Inventor: 3D modeling

    software of Autodesk

  • Design tools: UG and Solidedge

    UG: Unigraphics

Offered by Siemens (first offered by McDonnell Douglas

Aircraft Company in 1960, and then UGS). First version

entering the market published in 1983

Have a very strong NC machining function

    Solidedge

Offered by UGS in 1995 (and then merged into Siemens)

Easier than UG, and easy to understand and operating

Have a less geometric modeling capability than UG

  • Design tools: CATIA and SolidWorks

    CATIA: Computer Aided Tri-Dimensional Interface

    Application

Offered by Dassault aircraft Co., Ltd. In 1982

The most high end 3D application, especially in surface

    modeling

Applied to all the aircraft corporations and most of the

    automobile factories

    SolidWorks:

Offered in 1995 by SolidWorks Co., Ltd. (founded in 1993,

    purchased by Dassault in 1997)

Windows based and has a reasonable price

  • Design tools: Pro/E

    Offered by Parametric Technology Corporation

    (PTC, founded in 1986).

First version was published in 1988

Put forward concepts of Feature based,

parametric and single database at the first

    time

Parts and assembly use the same database

  • 1.1 Summarization of Pro/Engineer

A suite of programs developed by Parametric

    Technology Corporation (PTC)

Used in design, analysis and manufacturing of

    products

  • 1.1 Summarization of Pro/Engineer

PTC was founded in 1985. Pro/E 1.0 was

published in 1988, which is the era of parametric

    3D design

    Pro/E wildfire 5.0 was published at 2009.7.17

From 1990s, PTC became the biggest provider of

    CAD/CAE/CAM software

  • 1.1 Summarization of Pro/Engineer

Advanced theories and technologies are used in

    Pro/E

    Solid Modeling

    Feature-based

    Parametric

  • 1.2 Functions of Pro/Engineer

Pro/E is a suite of programs that are used in the design,

    analysis, and manufacturing of products

In detail, Pro/E has more than 20 modules, which covers

all the design and manufacturing procedure

    Conceptual design

    Parts design

    Virtual assembly

    Function simulation

    Manufacturing

  • 1.2 Functions of Pro/Engineer: modules

In general, product design & manufacturing are divided

into several larger modules, which provides different

    function.

    Industrial design

    Mechanical design

    Function simulation

    Manufacturing

The procedure of product design & manufacturing is the

    integration of several modules

  • 1.Industrial design

Conceptual model can be built easily using the draft,

model building, rendering and other methods.

  • 2. Mechanical design

Parts can be built and assembled accurately by designers

    using Pro/E modeling module

    The reducer built with Pro/E

  • 2. Mechanical design

Complicated assembly can be built easy in Pro/E

    Excavator arm built with Pro/E

  • 2. Mechanical design

    With additional

    module, special

    assembly can be built

    easily

    Injection mold built

    with the module of

    Pro/Moldesign

  • 2. Mechanical design: Engineering drawing

Engineering drawings can be generated according to the

3D mold built in the previous procedure

  • 3. Function simulation

Put the conceptual design into engineering environment to evaluate

    the performance of product

Eliminate multiple design choices and find the best solution

  • 4. Manufacturing
