Stanley William Brook 1899-1916 Private Stanley William Brook (203488) of D Company, 1 st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment was born in 1898 in West Blackdown and died on 27 October 1918 aged 20. He is buried in Brentor Methodist Cemetery. He was the son of Henry and Martha (Ley) Brook of West Blackdown. Stanley William Brook, sometimes Brooks, was born in 1899, the second son of Henry and Martha Brook. Henry was the son of a farmer, Thomas Brook (b1835) and his wife Susanna (b1856). In 1891 Henry (23) was living at home in the four roomed farm in Veale Down, Bridestowe with his parents and brothers and sisters, Rhoda (20), Richard (18), John (14), Maria (12), Jessie (10), Louisa (8) and Clara (6). Henry and Richard worked on the family farm with their father. Henry and Martha Ley were married in 1894. In 1901 Henry was a platelayer with the railway and the family had a three roomed home in West Blackdown, close to the railway at the end of Burn Lane.. Henry gave his age as 31 and Martha 32. Their two children were Sydney John, who had been born in 1895 and Stanley, 1898. By 1911, when Henry and Martha had been married 17 years, four daughters had been added to the family living in West Blackdown; Edith M (b1904), Dorothy (1906), Leona (1908) and Flossy M who was only 2 months old at the time of the census on 2 April. Stanley was 12 and attending school. Sydney, the eldest son, was not shown at home on census night, as he was working as a general labourer for John Jackman at Rowden Farm. Jackman was a land agent and auctioneer. It is possible that Sydney married a member of the Bond family in Plymouth in the summer of 1920. When Stanley left school he worked as a labourer, but when he enlisted in the army, in May 1916 at Sidmouth, he was described as a baker. He was 5ft 3in tall and weighed 113 lb. He was not actually called up at Plymouth until the end of January 1917. After training he crossed the channel
