"The Best of TEL" is a collection of essays by eminentwriters from diverse fields first published in the magazine "The Equator Line".Bobb has edited the volume published by Palimpsest. "He has carefullygone through every essay, discovered its subtext and put it in perspective,"Palimpsest CEO Bhaskar Roy said.

Among the contributors to the volume are eminent psychiatrist SanjayChugh, sociologist Shiv Visvanathan, Swiss writer Robert Hutchison,Australian film critic John W.Hood, former Doordarshan news anchor NeethiRavindran, British scholar Danielle Hall and veteran columnist Sunanda K.Datta-Ray. Pointing to the efforts made by "The Equator Line" to break freefrom today's mainstream media, Bobb, in his introduction to the volumesaid, "The core of the magazine is what people call narrative journalism" in

contrast to "cacophonic and sensationalized" media dominated by 24x7television. "If there is one constant in a rapidly changing world of communi-cation, it is this: the human need for thought-provoking journalism willalways command a premium," he added.

3D printers are emerging as a key growing printing technology in globallandscape. testimonial given by Marcos Jordão,director of operations for VideplastBrazil, in which he explained hiscompany's recent decision to ordera Sunday Vpak 500 press. Jordãosaid print quality and productionflexibility were key motivators for theinvestment.

As well as the technical aspects ofthe Vpak design, Goss representa-tives provided a detailed overviewof cost models, which wereparticularly well-received accordingto Clavijo:

"You could see the delegates sit upand take note when we illustratedthe potential cost benefits of Vpaktechnology using data from realproduction models," he explains."By switching the numbers for flexoand gravure platemaking and jobsetup in different run-lengthexamples with true corresponding

To round off the seminar, Gossdiscussed consultancy services andfinancing options available.Representatives from QuadTech, ESIand Flint Group also presentedduring the event, describing howtheir products can enhance Vpakcapabilities and performance.

"From the flood of questions duringthe relaxed downtime at the end, itwas clear the information presentedhad captured many imaginations,"concludes Clavijo.

"Delegates had a much firmer graspof the benefits of Vpak technologyand we particularly received a lot of

questions about the procedure ofintegrating web offset into existingproduction scenarios. If we hadbeen in any doubt before then, thiswas a pretty clear indication of asuccessful event!"

In addition to hosting localizedconferences and seminars, GossInternational regularly holds livedemonstrations on a Vpak 500press system, with EB and UV curingand flexo coating, in its PackagingTechnology Center at companyheadquarters in Durham, (NH), USA.

“From the flood of ques-tions during the relaxeddowntime at the end, it wasclear the informationpresented had capturedmany imaginations,"concludes Clavijo.

Unique configuration for firstMagnum Compact press inthe US

Low-height design crucial to projectsuccess

With the press towers clearing theoverhead by no more than an inch, the first Magnum Compact presssystem in the United States has beeninstalled snugly and initial tests on itssix 2 x 1 units completed. The pressis currently undergoing commission-ing tests and shadow productionbefore moving into full productionthis month.

The new press for AdvancePublishing of Staten Island, USA,complements the company'sexisting double-width press line andoffers backup to the production ofthe daily Staten Island Advancewhile adding capacity for othercontract newspaper, insert andcommercial work.

Even at just 7'2" (2.2m) tall, theinstallation of the Magnum Compacttowers was a high-precisionoperation. In what is possibly aunique configuration, web slotswere cut into the ceiling toaccommodate turner bars fordelivering the web to a folder on thefloor above. Extra web slots werealso cut to feed an additional, futurefolder which has been allowed forin the configuration.

An engineering achievement in itself, the installation was completed withonly very minor modifications to thebuilding.

Among the Magnum Compactfeatures attractive to Staten IslandAdvance was the Goss Autoplatetechnology that delivers fastmakereadies and enables succes-sive jobs to be run with completeplate changes within two minutes. This is accomplished with minimumwaste and contributes to maximum

press uptime. Plates that have been removed may be reused for repeat production of shorter run jobs, furtherextending the value proposition of the press. The design of the Magnum Compact system gives the towers a lowerprofile without compromising print quality or performance. Easy access to blankets, rubber rollers and ink ductsenabled by the single-level towers facilitates and accelerates maintenance.

Together with simplified operation and run-length flexibility, these features mean that the Magnum Compact designenables the Staten Island Advance to offer a wide range of products competitively and with good margins. Theability to print cost-effective runs as short as 500 - 1,000 copies provides printers not only with an alternative todigital print, but an economical way of handling runs up to 250,000 copies, giving unparalleled production flexibilityand a powerful competitive advantage.

The Staten Island Advance was established in 1886 and is part of Advance Publishing's family of newspapers thatcomprises dozens of titles across the United States. A diversified communications group, Advance Publishing hasmedia interests that encompass cable television, leading media internet sites, business journals and magazines aswell as newspapers.

Rocket Manufacturer United Launch Alliance Will 3D Print Flight-ReadyRocket Components.

ULA Has Vision to Reduce Launch Vehicle Cost by 50 Percent with Help of3D Printing.

3D printing helped consolidate part count from 140 to 16 parts for onecomplex assembly, lowering costs and risk

Do you think 3D printers are just a new fad for hobbyists or making knick-knacks? Or limited to making prototypes? Don't tell that to rocket manufac-turer United Launch Alliance (ULA).

Making launch vehicles for NASA, the Air Force and commercial satellites,ULA knows 3D printing is a serious tool that has been around more than 25years and is a growing production process. And ULA knows a thing or twoabout critical applications. On the lower-end, its rockets cost a cool $165million. And they must propel into space billion-dollar satellites weighingmore than 60,000 pounds. "It's about as demanding an application as youcan get," says Rich Garrity, VP and General Manager Vertical Solutions Unit forAdditive Manufacturing system maker Stratasys Ltd. (Nasdaq:SSYS). "Rocketsmust endure pressure, G-force, speed, vibration, heat, and extreme cold."

United Launch Alliance is the premier launch services company in the U.S.,and with its heritage systems - Atlas and Delta - it has supported America'spresence in space for more than 50 years. Like other leading edge manufac-turers using 3D printing, ULA progressed from prototyping to tooling andthen to flight hardware production.

After acquiring two Fortus 900mc 3D Production Systems from Stratasys,ULA began the process of updating the Environmental Control System (ECS)duct on the Atlas V, which will launch with the new 3D component in 2016.The ECS duct is critical to the countdown sequence of a launch, deliveringnitrogen to sensitive electronic components within the rocket booster. Theprevious design for the ECS duct assembly contained 140 parts, but bymodifying the design using FDM 3D Printing Technology, ULA consolidatedthe number of parts to only 16. This significantly reduces installation time andresults in a 57 percent part-cost reduction. Watch the video.

ULA selected ULTEM 9085 FDM thermoplastic material to produce durable,high-performance end-use parts. "ULTEM 9085 has great strength propertiesover a wide temperature range," said Greg Arend, Program Manager forAdditive Manufacturing at ULA. "We have done testing to show that it is verycapable of withstanding temperatures from cryogenic all the way up toextreme heat. And it's tough enough to handle the vibration and stress of liftoff and flight. We're very satisfied with its performance."

The Atlas V won't likely be the last launch vehicle incorporating 3D printingtechnology. ULA has ambitious plans to increase the quantity of 3D printedparts to over 100 on the next generation rocket.

"We see somewhat of an exponential growth in the utility of 3D printing forflight applications on our current vehicles," said Arend. "And we intend touse it heavily with our Vulcan rocket."

The parts are 3D printed using ULTEMTM 9085 resin for FDM, which iscertified to an Airbus material specification. ULTEM 9085 resin provideshigh strength-to-weight ratio and is FST (flame, smoke, and toxicity)compliant for aircraft interior applications. This enables Airbus to manufac-ture strong, lighter weight parts while substantially reducing productiontime and manufacturing costs.

"We are delighted that Stratasys additive manufacturing solutions are beingadopted by Airbus for its flagship A350 XWB aircraft. Both companiesshare a vision of applying innovative technologies to design and manufac-turing to create game-changing benefits," said Dan Yalon, Executive VicePresident, Business Development, Marketing & Vertical Solutions forStratasys.

"Our additive manufacturing solutions can produce complex parts on-demand, ensuring on time delivery while streamlining supply chains.Additive manufacturing also greatly improves the buy-to-fly ratio assignificantly less material is wasted than with conventional manufacturingmethods. Stratasys is looking forward to bringing these and otheradvantages to its collaboration with Airbus and to being part of Airbus'Factory of the Future initiative."

Leading companies in a variety of industries, from aerospace andautomotive to consumer goods and medical, are partnering with Stratasysto adopt additive manufacturing strategies.

A transformative alternative to conventional manufacturing methods,Stratasys additive manufacturing enables original and replacement parts tobe digitally produced at the best suited locations, reducing both materialwaste and inventory requirements.

Historian and Dr DesignateNina Kleinöder has won the2015 drupa Prize. drupa

awarded the Oberhausen-local forher dissertation “OccupationalHealth and Safety in the WestGerman Iron and Steel Industry in the20th Century. Structures, Actors andIntertwining Processes”. She wasawarded the prize by Claus Bolza-

Schünemann (CEO at Koenig &Bauer AG and Chairman of the drupacommittee), Werner M. Dornscheidt(CEO at Messe Düsseldorf) and Prof.Dr. Anja Steinbeck (Principal ofHeinrich-Heine University,Düsseldorf) as part of a festive eventon 1 June at Düsseldorf’sIndustrieclub.

In her prize-winning work Kleinöderexplores the falling number of worksaccidents in the German iron andsteel industry since the 1920s and30s and examines the causes of thistrend. Because – as Nina Kleinöderfirmly believes – this trend is not onlydue to technology and automationor rising occupational safetylegislation. The background isconsiderably more complex. It isfrom this perspective that Dr.Kleinöder approaches the matter:

2015 drupa Prize goes to 32-year oldNina Kleinöder

the academic attempts to findanswers to questions to help toreveal the real causes: how was thissteady drop in accident numberspossible? What agents worktogether and what motives did theypursue here?

Dr. Kleinöder proceeds in exemplaryfashion tracking the accident figuresfrom four companies in the iron andsteel industry in the Rhine-Ruhrregion (Hoesch, Krupp,Mannesmann and Thyssen).

Over the course of her work theacademic reveals a complexintertwining network of in-companyand external influences – as well as ablend of economic, political andhuman factors that range betweenvolition and regulation, betweeneconomic reality and social

extectations.

The development of occupationalhealth and safety as it exists today is– her key finding – the result of acooperative intertwining processbetween numerous actors andinfluences from unions, associa-tions, science, politics and societywith one decisive criterion:companies from the iron and steelindustry played a successful andinfluential role here and therebyproved that occupational health andsafety and the continued health ofemployees are also matters close totheir heart.

Nina Kleinöder was born inOberhausen in 1983 and afterleaving school with an “Abitur” shestudied Modern and ContemporaryHistory including German RegionalHistory, Economic History as well asContemporary English and AmericanStudies at the Heinrich HeineUniversity. Rapida 106 with four printing units went live at printing house Joemay in

Niigata, on the west coast of Japan, only three weeks after it was

delivered.

The four-colour press for the Japanese market is somewhat of a novelty for

KBA as the presses going to Japan are usually longer. Nevertheless, the

world’s makeready champion won over all at Joemay with its fast job change

and the Rapida 106 outstanding performance of up to 20,000sph.

Founded in 1995, the family-run firm with approx. 70 employees focuses

primarily on commercial printing. However, Joemay doesn’t think of itself

solely as a printing company, but more a communication company given its

broad service offerings ranging from campaign planning, production of

contents and advertising material to PR services for customers.

Along with printing catalogues, brochures, flyers an

d posters, challenging packaging substrates, e.g. for Japanese chocolate,

also belong to its portfolio. Given the frequent mix of small to very large-

sized jobs Joemay looked for a press offering the highest level of automa-

tion and the shortest makeready times. KBA was thus able to win points with

its Rapida 106 makeready world champion against tough competition from

Japan.

The experts from Niigata were bowled over in particular by the savings in

waste thanks to QualiTronic ColorControl. Further features include automatic

plate change, water cooling, inking unit temperature control and the

networking via LogoTronic CIPLinkX.

Raised by 450mm (17.7in) the four-colour press often runs at speeds of up

This year, Print China 2015 onceagain lived up to its reputationas Asia’s largest trade show for

the printing industry. Over 190,000visitors took the opportunity to findout about current and future printmedia industry topics in Dongguanin Guangdong Province from April 7to 12, 2015. HeidelbergerDruckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg)has been represented in China formany years and knows customerneeds for integrated and efficientsolutions, enhanced service, andnew applications like no othersupplier. The products, gearedprecisely to these trends, thusgenerated high levels of interestamong the Asian visitors.

A particular highlight was theintegration of digital and offsetapplications. The new Linoprint CVdigital printing systems and theJetmaster Dimension 250 for 4Dprinting were presented in China forthe first time. The premiere of thefour-color Speedmaster CS 92

proved a popular response to therising demand for cost efficiencyand the main print formats used inAsia. This machine has beenspecially developed for Asia andcuts printing plate costs by over 20percent thanks to its new sheetformat. Both the digital and offsetpresses were integrated via thePrinect print shop workflow.

“Asia is one of the key markets for usand we were able to showcase ourintegrated digital and offset printingapplications to a large number ofvisitors. We’re delighted with howthe trade show went and theinterest in the solutions exhibitedwas high, as we had expected,”says Harald Weimer, member of theManagement Board responsible forsales and services at Heidelberg.

With 4D printing, Heidelberghighlighted possibilities thattranscend the two-dimensionalprinting of flat materials that hascharacterized the last few centuries. This opens up totally new prospectsfor print shops to fulfill the growingdemand for personalized consumergoods and proved to be a big drawfor visitors. The new SpeedmasterCS 92 also met market needs, withsales of almost twenty presses.

The services and consumablessector was a key feature of theHeidelberg booth alongsideequipment. There were largenumbers of visitors inquiring aboutsolutions to increase machineavailability and about support forcomplex printing applications, withthe result that numerous contractswere concluded. So it comes as nosurprise that every second press isalready supplied with RemoteService to ensure the fastestpossible service. And this figure iscontinuing to grow, with all pressesfrom the Qingpu site near Shanghaibeing shipped with a servicecontract.

Growth market of digital printing –Linoprint CV and Jetmaster Dimen-sion 250 4D printing systemproduce a “wow” effectLike everywhere else in the world,Chinese print shops are alsoharnessing the potential of digitalprinting. The new Linoprint CV fromHeidelberg with white/coatingfunction offers users even greaterflexibility for cost-effective printing ofshort and personalized runs. TheLinoprint CV also supports a widerange of substrates. The Jetmaster Dimension 250 digitalprinting system has been speciallydeveloped for print serviceproviders looking to build up newbusiness areas. This system printsthree-dimensional objects withpersonalized content – hence thename 4D printing.

At Print China, the JetmasterDimension printed over 500 soccerballs with customized content andexceeded all expectations. “We’dlike to build on the wow effectgenerated here. We have a lot ofpeople interested in this technologyand will be launching the JetmasterDimension on the Chinese market bythe end of the year,” says Weimer.

The new Gallus DCS 340 digitallabeling system was also unveiled atPrint China 2015. This is a jointproject between Heidelberg, Gallus, and Fujifilm that shows the opportu-nities offered by the new partnerstrategy at Heidelberg. By accessingpartner technologies, Heidelberg isable to meet customer needs veryrapidly¬. For example, the proto-type of the new digital labelingsystem was developed andpresented to the public in less thanfourteen months.

Offset printing – new SpeedmasterCS 92 successfully unveiledSpecial print formats are mainly usedfor production in commercialprinting in Asia, and the newSpeedmaster CS 92-4 is a response

to this. With its print format of 650 x940 millimeters (25.59 x 37.01inches), it cuts printing plate costsby 20 percent over a conventional70 x 100 centimeter (27.56 x 39.37

It is equipped with the Preset PlusFeeder and Preset Plus Delivery, Prinect Press Center Compact, and AutoPlatefor fast setup as standard. The target groups are commercial and packagingprinters. The Speedmaster CS 92-4 will be produced in proven Heidelbergquality at the Qingpu plant near Shanghai. Since the start in 2006, this sitehas supplied over 5,000 printing units or over 1,350 presses in theSpeedmaster SM 52, SM 74, and CD 102 series. Four-color standardpresses are produced for the small and medium formats, while up to sixcolors including coating unit are supplied for the 70 x 100 centimeter (27.56x 39.37 inch) format. Heidelberg was therefore quick to respond to theincreasing requirements of Asian customers. Over five percent of Chinese

production is now exported to neighboring Asian countries and thisproportion is rising.

CLOSE TO THE CUSTOMER

China remains one of the largest single markets for Heidelberg. Fourbranches in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong and two offices inChengdu and Guangzhou ensure comprehensive customer support locally.A total of over 1,000 Heidelberg employees work in China, including morethan 600 in sales and service. A Print Media Center is to be opened at theQingpu site this fall to give customers a practical overview of the Heidelbergportfolio.

Label printing expert leveragesmarket’s fastest full-color digital labelpress to better meet customerneeds and support growth

Xeikon, an innovator in digitalcolor printing technology, ispleased to announce the first

North American installation of theXeikon Cheetah at Accu-Label, Inc.making it the third pilot siteworldwide to install this break-through digital label productionsolution. Accu-Label, located in FortWayne, Indiana, has added Xeikon’snew press to complement itsexisting production platform, whichincludes a Xeikon 3500 that wasinstalled last year, as well asflexographic printing solutions.Xeikon Cheetah is the mostproductive five-color digital labelpress available on the market today. It was the exceptional speed of thepress (98 ft/min or 30m/min),combined with its high qualityoutput, that convinced Accu-Labelto invest in the Xeikon Cheetah. Theinvestment will enable the companyto respond to evolving clientdemands, expand into new marketsand optimize its productionprocesses – all while meeting thehigh level of quality output thecompany has been renowned forthroughout its history.

“We chose Xeikon because theyreally understood our business andchallenges. Our experiences withtheir customer support, technicalservice and consulting services havebeen outstanding,” explains DavidManning, Accu-Label’s founder. ”Ofcourse, speed was a big consider-ation, but there was more… we area company that has always beendedicated to providing the bestquality printing and a high level ofservice. For us, it doesn’t matterhow fast a press goes if we can’tdeliver a quality product. We felt theXeikon Cheetah gave us both speedand better quality than other digitalprinting technologies currently

available on the market. The Xeikonteam showed us how installing theXeikon Cheetah would help us meetthe specific demands of ourcustomers while ensuring superiorquality. Having this flexibility is afundamental market differentiator forus.”

A tradition of quality

Accu-Label is a family-centeredbusiness that has been dedicated tosurpassing the expectations of itscustomers ever since it wasfounded 28 years ago. Over theyears, the company has continu-ously expanded and its growth hasbeen fueled by two things:Manning’s passion for printing andthe company’s dedication toquality. Until its first Xeikon acquisi-tion last year, the business had been100% flexo, but Manning says, “Ihave always looked for moreeffective processes by asking‘What’s a better way to do this?’ Lastyear, the answer was to add digitalto our production platform with theXeikon 3500, which is already inhigh demand. Today, we arebuilding on our investment in digitalwith the Xeikon Cheetah.”

Catie Manning, overseeing sales &marketing at Accu-Label, explainshow the addition of the first digitalpress only one year ago changedthe business. “While at first, ourcustomers had to be educatedabout the capabilities of digitalproduction, they have come tovalue the quality and consistency itoffers. In just one year, we have hadso many jobs printed digitally thatthe Xeikon 3500 is running at highcapacity. Adding a second digitallabel press – the fastest on themarket in its class – is vital to meetingtheir expectations, now and in thefuture. In addition, to better positionthe company to address ourevolving customer needs, thespeed and throughput of theXeikon Cheetah will enable growth

in our customer base. This will alsoimprove the efficiency of our flexoproduction fleet by dedicating it tothe longer runs it is designed toproduce cost-efficiently.”

The digital journey

The addition of digital labelproduction capacity has meant bigchanges for Accu-Label and itscustomers. Being able to offer bothhigh quality digital and conventionalflexographic printing expands therange of solutions and services thecompany can offer. David Manningbelieves the Xeikon Cheetah press iscritical to continuing that expansion. He says, “Flexo is an art form that Itruly love, and I’ve been practicingthis art for a long time. But nowa-days, it’s not the right solution forevery label project. For proofs andmock-ups as well as shorter andversioned runs, the cost, time andenergy required makes it inefficient, and in many cases, unattainable. TheXeikon Cheetah, which gives ushigher quality than many other digitallabel production solutions on themarket, is the key to future-proofingour business.”

David comments that one of thebiggest benefits of digital is thegreater level of flexibility it offers fordesign and prototyping. He notes,“This flexibility lets us provide betterservice to existing customers andoffer new services to companies wehave not been able to work withbefore. For example, we havecustomers who want to see manyversions of their labels before theygo into production.

Digital label production lets you getto final designs more quickly andvery cost-effectively. It enablesclients to be more creative with theirideas and gives us the opportunityto help them bring that creativity tomarket faster. This process savestime, money and effort for the client– another key advantage of digital

label production.”Perfect match, perfect quality

For Accu-Label, quality remains oneof the most important consider-ations. David Manning says, “As wecontinue to evolve our business, wenever lose sight of our dedication toquality. This focus on quality is whathas made us successful for 28 years.Quality and consistency are criticalto us and to our customers, andwith our combination offlexographic printing and Xeikondigital presses, we never sacrificeeither one. We hit the quality markeach and every time.”

“Accu-Label is a great example ofwhat a label manufacturer canaccomplish by incorporating digitaltoner technology into the mix,” addsFilip Weymans, Director of SegmentMarketing, Labels and Packaging atXeikon. “And there is no better wayto do that than with the XeikonCheetah. The Xeikon Cheetah is agroundbreaking press that repre-sents one of the most importantadvancements in the digital labelproduction market. We are gratifiedto see that leading label printers, such as Accu-Label, have chosenthe Xeikon Cheetah to meet clientneeds and expand into newmarkets.”

“With Xeikon’s support, it’s been afantastic year. They have brought alevel of understanding about ourbusiness and significant value toeach conversation, while givingexpert advice on how to addresschanging market needs. I respectand appreciate that,” Manningconcludes. “When we talked aboutthe future, it became clear that theright equipment would help uscontinue to build on our success. The new Xeikon Cheetah press isexactly the technology we need inorder to do that.”

Print China a resoundingsuccess for KBA

With over 200 printing unitssold from all availableseries and a high influx of

visitors to the 1,000m2 stand, PrintChina which ran from 7 to 12 April inGuangdong was a huge success forthe KBA Group. Several KBAcompanies joined forces under thebanner “KBA: Print Solutions for All”and the host of exhibits ranging fromsheetfed and web offset, flexo, inkjet, metal, hollow container andglass decoration, and digital codingsystems were met with greatinterest.

The Chinese print pundits weresurprised and blown away by thebreadth and variety of print solutionsbearing the KBA logo. Many onlypreviously knew of KBA’s Rapidasheetfed offset presses which arewidespread in China. Despite thecountry’s recent somewhat sluggisheconomy, the string of new ordersand projects booked by the end ofthe trade show clearly surpassed allexpectations. KBA profited from itsstrong footing in packaging printing. In addition, high performancepresses with extensive kit andautomation are becoming increas-ingly popular given the rise in wagecosts also in China. KBA Rapidasaccommodate this trend.

KBA profits from shift inChinese print market

The string of orders placed duringthe trade show ranged from theRapida 75, Rapida 105, Rapida 105PRO, the high-tech Rapida 106 to thelarge-format Rapida 145. The secondorder for a Rapida 145 from internetprinter Zhengzhou Shengda ColorPrinting Co. Ltd is an example of theshift in the Chinese print market. KBAsales director Dietmar Heyduck: “Inthe face of tough competitionChinese online printers are increas-ingly switching to large format. Weare supporting this developmentwith our automated large-formatpresses for fast job change, a higherlevel of productivity and shorterdelivery times.” Walter Zehner, managing director of KBA China:“Gaining online printers as custom-ers for our highly productive largeRapidas is a huge opportunity for usand means less staff costs for ourclients, increased efficiency andgreater competitiveness.”

The order for two Rapida 106 with

Planned to print at speeds of up to183 metres (600 feet) per minuteand produce up to 30,000 squaremetres (300,000 square feet) perhour, this inkjet press will printcorrugated liner rolls that can thenbe placed directly onto existingindustry-standard 2.5 or 2.8 metre(110 inch-wide) corrugators. Thispress will be the first solution co-developed by the two companies

since the announcement of theirstrategic collaboration at GraphExpo 2014 in Chicago on 28September 2014.

Centralised corrugated box plantsserving major retail brands willespecially benefit from this digitalpre-print solution for all corrugatedprint applications. Brands areincreasingly requiring just-in-timeinventory, shorter runs, and fasterturn-around time. HP’s inkjettechnology enables significant time, material, and shipping costadvantages when compared toanalogue processes. Digital preprintis more efficient than post-printalternatives.

“Addressing the enormous digitalopportunity in the corrugatedmarket requires best-in-classtechnology innovation, a portfolioof solutions, scale, and a marketvision,” said Aurelio Maruggi, vicepresident and general manager,Inkjet High-speed ProductionSolutions, HP. “The new press willtransform the short and mid-range

corrugated packaging market, dramatically disrupting operatingmodels and costs and moreimportantly create new value forbrand customers.”

HP and KBA both bring provenlegacies of endurance, scale andinnovation to their joint initiative. Thisyear, HP celebrates its 76thanniversary and its 31st year ofThermal Inkjet innovation. KBA is a197-year-old company and thesecond-largest offset pressmanufacturer worldwide.

“KBA has a rich heritage of develop-ing innovative solutions that meet orexceed customers’ quality expecta-tions,” said Christoph Müller, executive vice president for the WebPress Product House, KBA. “Inworking with HP, we will combineour complementary technologicalstrengths for the needs of packagingconverters.” HP Thermal InkjetTechnology helps meet converters’needs for high-quality print, alongwith high-volume productivity, reliability and versatility. Ultimately, it

opens the way to game-changingvalue chain cost savings andcapabilities for brands and packag-ing converters.

HP’s accelerated entry intocorrugated packagingAt drupa 2008, HP announced itsfirst Inkjet Web Press. Since then, thecompany has expanded its portfolioto its current lineup of ten pressesacross five web-width platformstransforming the publishing andproduction mail market.

In May 2014 at Interpack, HPannounced its intent to enter thecorrugated packaging market. InJune, the company announced itsfirst web-press offering for thismarket. Fewer than 90 days later thefirst HP T400 Simplex Color InkjetWeb Press was installed at ObalyMorava – Czech Republic. At GraphExpo, in September 2014, HPannounced its partnership withKBA. The new web-press offering isin addition to the HP Scitex sheet-fed corrugated solutions offered byHP.

Following an intensive tenderprocess that considered bothoffset and digital printing

options as part of a centralisedprinting and distribution strategy forAsia-Pacific, Oxford University Press(OUP) appointed CTPS Group as itsfull-service provider. CTPS isproviding an end-to-end solutioncovering printing with HP Inkjet WebPress and HP Indigo technology, mailing solutions, stock manage-ment, and the distribution ofproducts to subscribers in 27countries throughout the region andbeyond.

“HP Inkjet meets our rigorous qualityrequirements for journals that weprint in Asia,” said Claire Humphreys,Production and Estimating Managerat OUP. “We have seen excellentresults from our digital printproviders in the UK and USA and we

are pleased to be able to benefitfrom the significant efficiencies thatHP digital printing affords.”Headquartered in Hong Kong, CTPSwill handle all production, ware-housing, and distribution of about60 OUP journals from its Dongguan,China plant.

It is using its HP Indigo 7500 DigitalPress to print the covers of thejournals, and its HP T300 Color InkjetWeb Press to produce the monoand four-colour text pages. The HPT300 press is integrated with aninline binding line from HPSmartStream finishing partner MullerMartini, providing a one-stopsolution for the complete produc-tion of perfect-bound journals. TheHP T300 press enables a four dayproduction turn round.

OUP’s selection of digital printing for

its journals in Asia reflects a growingtrend among publishers to movejournal and book production todigital.

“Many academic and STM publishersare looking closely into their supplychain to enhance their efficiency, and are discovering that digitalprinting can both meet their qualitystandards and open opportunitiesfor meaningful efficiencies,” notedJohn Currie, Global Business Directorat CTPS.

“The HP technology is a good fit toprovide OUP with a cost-effectiveprint solution. The print qualityrequirements and average numberof copies are right at the sweet spotfor HP Inkjet and HP Indigo.”

Under the two-year agreement withOUP, CTPS will handle production

and distribution of the selectedjournals, primarily humanities, socialscience and sci-med titles, published at varying frequencies, from two to 26 times a year, inquantities of 70 – 5,000.

OUP’s Claire Humphreys notes thatpublishers need to partner up- anddown-stream to further drive themigration of journals to digitalprinting. “As print runs drop andinkjet printing quality gets better, wewill see more use of digital.

As an industry, we can’t just expectthe technology to get better; wehave to partner with the print serviceproviders to make sure the choiceof substrates meets our needs, andalso work with professionalsocieties to find the best solutionfor their needs. That’s what we aredoing with CTPS. It’s the only way.”

Appointments are their mainbusiness: The printer LEGRAhas become the biggest

Polish producer of notebooks, pocket diaries and bound calen-dars. From summer 2015, theseproducts will be more and moreproduced by a digital printingworkflow solution. The highlyflexible book block solutionFormerLine from manroland websystems will be responsible for anefficient finishing.

Calendar production at a digital rush:„In the future, LEGRA will be able toproduce directly from the paper reelto the glued calendar. We are veryhappy that the book block solutionFormerLine and its integration via“WorkflowBridge” can do its partnow”, Alwin Stadler, Vice PresidentDigital Printing at manroland websystems, shortly explains the mainbenefit of the digital workflow theprinter from Krakow has chosen.Since 1997, LEGRA has become aconstant at the Polish printingindustry that delivers products likebooks, wall calendars, notebooks, diaries and desk pads – inland andabroad. With a systematic expansionof the machinery, as well at thesheetfed sector as at the digitalsector, LEGRA Sales Director TomaszKostecki can reply to customerrequirements more flexibly and withmore quality now: „We always keepan eye on what is happening at themarket. According to this we makeinvestments. We want to offer ourcustomers high quality, fastproduction and finishing and, at thesame time, a good price. The digitalworkflow with the FormerLine is agreat added value for theserequirements. We do not onlyexpand our capacities and ourcreativity. For the first time we canproduce to the glued product inone step. This is what I call efficientand economic production.“

Great team: FormerLine andLiftCollator At LEGRA, the manrolandweb systems FormerLine and theRIMA LiftCollator will be integrated toa Kodak Prosper Press 1000 for thefirst time. The folding quality of theproducts is convincing, they will beprinted in black and white with theInkjet technology “Continues stream”from Kodak and then they will befinished as book blocks or calendarblocks. The printed reel runs overtwo formers of the FormerLine andsingle signatures at a 8-, 6- or 4-page-jump can be produced. Thecomplete calendar book will becollected at the RIMA LiftCollator.Afterwards LEGRA producesindividual calendar covers for thefinal products.

The finishing machinery of LEGRAenables a perfect book binding.Folders, binding machines, a threadsealing machine, a book covermachine, a collect stitcher and ablanking machine are only a few

examples for how the differentdigital and offset products can befinished.

DIGITAL PRODUCTION MOREIMPORTANT FOR BOOK PRINTERS

What rules at LEGRA are not onlycalendars – by investing in digitalprinting, LEGRA also wants tostrengthen its position at the bookprinting market. At this industrysector digital printing besidessheetfed printing becomes moreand more important. Also textbooks are printed more and moredigitally. Telling arguments are aflexible and cost-effective produc-tion of short runs and print-on-demand. Further production will beprinted on demand, the storage willbe switched more and more to thedigital workflow of the printinghouse. For assuring low cost-per-copy and highest efficiency, theprocess needs a good workflow.

MATCHING WORKFLOWHow will the digital production atLEGRA look like? The provenworkflows from Heidelberg andKodak generate the printing data forthe digital press. The softwaresolution „WorkflowBridge“ frommanroland web systems adjusts thefinishing device „FormerLine“automatically. The device checksand verifies the job regarding errorsand approves automation via openinterfaces and JDF. Orders can besaved, job batches can be createdand special processing batches canbe saved for a further usage.

The new FormerLine helps to enablea more flexible production and, atthe same time, faces the changingmarket requirements. “This invest-ment really is an investment in thefuture and we are very happy thatLEGRA decided to realize this withmanroland web systems”, saysBusiness Director Jaroslaw Kotfisfrom manroland web systems.

Avery Dennison, Mutoh andSAi new road signagesolution cuts time and costs

by 40+%

Salt Lake City, Utah, USA – 16th April2015 - SA International (SAi) hasannounced that its flagshipsignmaking software, SAi Flexi, hasbeen selected for Avery Dennison’sTrafficJet™ Print System for world-wide compliant highway signage.TrafficJet™ comprises SAi FlexiPRINTDX RIP software, as well as specialinks and retroreflective(1) substratesfrom Avery Dennison, and a 1.6m-wide, eight-color printer fromMutoh.

TrafficJet™ overcomes the time andcost issues associated withtraditional production methods ofroad signage which can be bothlabor-intensive and expensive. These methods include directapplied legend, use of coloredoverlay films, and screen printing.Existing direct-to-substrate digitalprinting solutions require a high initialinvestment and signs have turn-around times of several days.

International substrate producer,Avery Dennison, developed theTrafficJet™ Print System to achieve afaster, more cost-effective solutionfor road signage using its beadedand prismatic retroreflectivesubstrates.

“SAi’s long association with Mutohmade us the best partners for theproject,” explains Gudrun Bonte,Product Director, SAi. “Mutoh knewthat SAi had experience in handlingnon-CMYK color sets, and Flexi waseasily remapped to accommodatethis niche requirement.”

TrafficJet is available in an eight spotcolor configuration as well as aCMYK with 4 spots configuration, capable of printing CMYK inks andTrafficJet spot inks at the same time. The TrafficJet’s spot colors are all

special colors, compliant with EUand US standards and includespecial red, blue, green, Worboysgreen(2), yellow, black and brown.TrafficJet offers a cost-effective inkjetprinting system for traffic safety andreflective sign producers, as well asgovernment agencies that produceor purchase signage, who benefitfrom a 10 and 12-year warrantiedand highly flexible solution withequipment, ink and reflectivesheeting for both permanent andwork zone signage.

COST AND TIME BENEFITSThe Mutoh printer, which costsabout one third as much ascompetitive printers for thisapplication, enables the TrafficJet™Print System to print at 8-10m2/hourusing specially formulated inks that

are dry and ready for laminationwithin two hours. The compositionof the Avery-Dennison’s retroreflec-tive films also contributes to therapid drying times. Signage of thistype using conventional solvent inksand substrates requires up to 48-72hours off-gassing time.

Historically, lead times for signs are3-4 weeks, but using the TrafficJet™Print System, printing, cutting andlamination can be done in as little asone day.

The low initial cost of the TrafficJet™Print System will enable morereflective signage printers to bringproduction in-house and changeproduction from the slow traditionalprocesses. With its ability to drivethousands of supported printers,

SAI FLEXI DRIVES RETROREFLECTIVE SOLUTION THATCUTS TRAFFIC SIGNAGE COSTS AND PRODUCTION TIMES

cutters and hybrids, SAi Flexi offersthe easiest print-and-cut workflowon the market, giving users bothproductivity and versatility.

“SAi Flexi also enables nesting whichsaves time and materials,” Bonteadds. “It can also be used as anend-to-end system, from design toprint, contour cutting, and for theautomatic generation of crop marks;or, it can be used simply as a RIP andprinter driver. “This is a specialistapplication with a large potentialmarket. It plays to SAi’s strengths, aswell as those of Avery Dennison andMutoh,” Bonte concludes. “Aboveall, it benefits signmakers andconverters, governments, andmotorists by providing warranted,cost-effective signage for saferoads.”

Mediengruppe Oberfrankenstarts production with anew newspaper printing

highlight

The COLORMAN e:line took upoperation in Bamberg right onschedule on March 16. ForMediengruppe Oberfranken, thenew newspaper printing press is animportant cornerstone for the fastand economic production of in-house and external publications andadvertising materials.

Very fast in every aspect: theCOLORMAN e:line was launchedsuccessfully in Bamberg on March16. The daily production for externalcustomers whooshed through thenew printing couples, duringnighttime production alone thepress will output around 115,000newspaper copies. Jörg Schild-Müller, head of the printshopdivision at MediengruppeOberfranken, voiced his satisfaction:“We had great expectations ofmanroland web systems and thesewere fully met. The cooperationbetween our staff and the Augsburgteam and the project implementa-tion were excellent. The punctuallaunch of the COLORMAN e:line isthe result of this highly professionalcooperation. All contract items werediligently handled. Although we hadalready installed a number of heatsetcommercial presses atMediengruppe Oberfranken, this isthe first time for us to operate anewspaper press from manroland aswell.”

Investing in a strong market positionThe COLORMAN e:line replaces tworotary presses of another manufac-turer and serves as a central elementin the long-term future orientation ofMediengruppe Oberfranken. At thetime of the purchasing decision in2014, Walter Schweinsberg, managing director of the holding

company, already stated: “Theinvestment in the Bamberg locationwill fulfill the quality requirements ofnewspaper production for the next15 years.” The Mediengruppeprinting experts precisely analyzedthe developments of the newspa-per market. They expect a consoli-dation of printing to fewer locationsin Germany and increasedoutsourcing of newspaper printingby the publishing companies. TheBamberg site with the DruckzentrumOberfranken is prepared for thisdevelopment. The location wasrestructured at a cost of around 17million euros and the result is amodern printshop with state-of-the-art newspaper printing andmailroom systems, complementedby an unattended on-demandprinting plate feeding system. Toaccommodate the COLORMANe:line, an architecturally sophisti-cated building was added to theexisting premises.

Highly automated and ergonomic

To enhance its successful produc-tion concept, MediengruppeOberfranken quickly decided on theCOLORMAN e:line last year. Theconcept of the 32-pages press wascompelling. The press consists oftwo eight-couple towers, a folderand two reel splicers. The e:lineoperates at a speed of 50,000cylinder revolutions per hour. InBamberg, nine newspaper editionsare printed every night. This largenumber of job changeovers can beoptimally handled by the autoprintfunction. During parallel make-readyprocesses, for example, the platechange can be carried out simulta-neously to feeding in a new web.The available automatic circumfer-ence change ensures flexibleproduction. Based on the highautomation rate of the printing press, production can be carried out bytwo press operators or by three incase of very frequent jobchangeovers. All relevant informationis displayed on the ControlCenter, the new central control console. The press is controlled via touch

screen. The MobilPad is anadditional fully equipped mobilecontrol console. It allows the pressto be controlled from any location inthe pressroom.

Pilot customer of IDCTo ensure premium quality andminimal waste, the COLORMANe:line is equipped with InlineControlsystems. MediengruppeOberfranken is a pilot partner in thedevelopment of the “InlineDensityControl with micro marking” (IDCμ),the new ink density control fornewspaper printing presses. Rightfrom the start, Jörg Schild-Müllerplaced his trust in the system, whichoperates with a traversing cameraand micro marking. He appreciatesthe impressive measuring andcontrol speed as well as the stabilityof the system which he has alreadybeen using in commercial printingfor a long time.
