Walk nr. 5. is an interesting route passing the Gouda mills or spots where mills stood once.

Walk nr. 1: Gouda Kaarsenpad (Gouda Candles path)

Start from the reverse side of the Agnietenkapel (a medieval chapel, once part of an old

monastery, location nr. 3). Turn the first right, Wilhelminastraat and walk a short distance

into the street.

Turn right at the Cappenersteeg (a 17th Century alley). At the end of the alley turn left into

the Zeugstraat. Follow the street, but keep the canal at your right hand side; walk straight

on, cross the street into the Jeruzalemstraat, and keep the bridge at your right.

A short distance away you’ll pass the Raoul Wallenbergplantsoen (a small public garden,

location 11) with the Jewish Memorial, gate of the former Jewish cemetery. 10 metres further

at the left you’ll find the Jeruzalemkapel (a chapel with the same floor plan as the Church of

the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, location map nr.12). A number of activities may be found

inside the chapel.

Cross the street and walk into the garden of the Sint-Janskerk (St. John’s church, Loc. nr.

5), which is known as the Willem Vroesentuin. Here you might hear what the mother of the

famous philosopher and theologian Desiderius Erasmus can reveal about her famous son.

Feel free to express you prefer she’d speak English, for she, mum of a real global citizen, will

happily oblige!

Leave the garden again by the way you came in and turn left to the Spieringstraat. Here you

find on the other side of the street the Weeshuis (former public library, location nr. 8) in the

former city orphanage. Enter through the gate and have a look around. There are activities

inside as well; free entrance!

Leave via the gate and cross the street to walk onto the Molenwerf (location nr. 9). At the left

At the opposite of the Church entrance the Museum garden is situated, which you may enter

through the Lazaruspoortje (a gate which is one of the two entrances of Museum Gouda, location nr. 7). In the afternoon the museum houses a beautiful harp concert. At the right of

the Lazaruspoortje there’s the wooden facade of the former Stonemason’s house Roodbol,

with (Dutch) clock gable, currently in use as art gallery (location nr. 6).

Leave the Museum garden the way you came in. Walk alongside the church and keep the

canal at your left, follow the curve to the right and take the first alley (Kerksteeg) left; you will

When leaving the church, turn left twice to have a quick look in the former Remonstrant

chapel (Keizerstraat 2).

Go back to the Hoge Gouwe and walk straight on to nr. 107. Here the Old-Catholic Church

(location nr. 16) is hidden behind monumental facades to masque the building’s function.

This church was built in times when Catholicism in the Netherlands was officially forbidden.

Throughout this day the church is open for visiting and you may light a Gouda candle free of

charge. During the day this spot is a special place to find silence.

Page 17: Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd · 2017-11-27 · Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd edition, 1 5 December 2017 (Be aware, approx.

When leaving the church, turn right and walk back to the bridge; cross the bridge and enter

the Lange Groenendaal. At the corner is the old Lutheran chapel (location nr. 19). Several

times during the day organ and choir concerts will be held there. Further on in the Lange Groenendaal, at nr. 79, you will pass the city’s former public bathing house. Recently the

building was fully renovated and restored to its original function.

At Turfmarkt nr. 23 (location nr. 20) the former Synagogue is located, nowadays the Church

of the Liberated Evangelist Parish, which resides in this building. On the other side of the

canal, the Verzetsmuseum (WWII Resistance Museum, location nr. 27) is open for visitors

and encloses a very nice patio garden with café.

When leaving the museum cross the canal over the bridge and enter the Naaierstraat. At nr.

6 you pass a historical monument elected in the Top 100 of Dutch heritage sites with a

beautiful gothic facade, dating from 1527.

Turn left and enter the Korte Groenendaal, when you walk on you will be back at the Market

Square (location 1). Enjoy!

At the right the patrician’s house Het Dubbeld Ancker, former tobaccoshop De Moriaan in Dutch Renaissance-style, and sociëteit Concordia (Roman Catholic gentlemen’s club). Turn right at the next bridge into the Noodgodsstraat, named after a medieval chapel demolished in 1576.

A model of the chapel can be found in Museum Gouda, in the maquette. At the end of the street turn left. You’re now in the Peperstraat. At nr. 92-96 Van de Velde en Halewijn wine store is based since 1818. De Armenkerk (Poor men’s church) at nr. 128 and nr. 130 is De Waterhont, a 14th Century workshop. The Peperstraat, containing many old warehouses, ends at the former Veerstalpoort (the farmer’s ferry gate), of which only remnants remain. Turn right to see the Museum harbor, where Gouda’s nautical heritage is kept. In the 16th century ships on

their way to liberate Leiden passed this lock, the Mallegatsluis. Take a breather in the Museum harbour café before continuing your walk down to the foot path in the direction of Croda (former Gouda Candle Factory) and step down along side the canal. Enjoy the impressive view at the museum harbour for a bit. This industrial area has a long history, partly visible in the pictures exhibited on the wall. Walk on to the Turfsingel, keep the canal to the right.

The huge once textile factory ‘de Garenspinnerij’ is now a cultural centre. Check the programme for today’s activities. And check out the square where also much is going o today. Look across the water to the left ‘De Kleischuur’ just started its new life. This remnant of Gouda’s former pottery industry was recently transformed into an organic restaurant. When crossing ‘De Guldenbrug’ take the right (de Vest). In front of you ‘de Asschuur (once used for waste collection) is now a dance club for young people. Pass the mill, de Rode Leeuw, which is

still operational, and turn left at nr 30, into ‘de Drapiersteeg’. Walk to ‘de Raam’. At your right you may see Mosque Nour. Keep the right hand side of the Raam until the crossing and turn left at the Kuiperstaat.

At the left you’ll see the Barabaratoren (St. Barbara’s tower), a last remainder of a 15th century monastery. Opposite the tower take a look at the historical shop De oude Bezem- en Borstelfabriek van de fam. Anders (Family Anders’ old Broom en Bristle Factory). Take a peak at the back of the Gouwekerk a little further on through the Saffraanpoort. At the right Gouda Syrup waffels are still produced and at the left the fomer Gouda Pipe makers ‘Van der Want’ were situated. Walk on to the Peperstraat and go left. Half way you may see the gate to a ‘hofje’ (a courtyard with almshouses around it). Also take a look at the neo-Rennaissance Curch of De Raadt at nr. 20.

At the end of the Peperstraat turn right, but before you do so, make sure you have a good look at the Visbank (the market hall where till the late 19 th Century fish was sold). At the end of this street

Page 19: Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd · 2017-11-27 · Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd edition, 1 5 December 2017 (Be aware, approx.

(Hoge Gouwe ) you turn left, pass the canal and walk on to the town square, where the medieval gothic town hall and the Christmas tree will meet you! Walk 4 : The Leo Vroman Walk (starts at Location nr. 28, De Chocoladefabriek

(Duration of this walk aprox. 20- 30 minutes)

1 - Start & goal: The Chocolate factory (Vromanpark/Klein Amerika)

2 - Local train to Schoonhoven - Coming out of The Chocolate factory, keep to the right and you’ll walk on to the Karnemelksloot. Keep the canal to your left. On your left hand side you see the historic drawbridge, which used to be a railway bridge for the local train to Schoonhoven. The station was located on the place where nowadays the prowess of a postmodern example of 1970’s architecture (the Panaromaflat) is displayed. Please keep on the right hand side of the canal.

[The train, mainly used for public transport, drove over the streets on rails at a speed of 30 km/h. It caused many an accident in its time by driving over coaches, cars and people who weren’t quick enough to jump out of the trains way. On august 23rd of 1942 the train claimed its last victim: the Germans took the iron rails the next day, and the people of Gouda burned the sleepers the following winter.]

There was the big railroad but then again

there was also Schoonhovens local train

it ran all over Gouda daily

driving over the Karnemelksloot

“mijn eigen Gouda” – Leo Vroman *

Walk on past the canal, and take time to admire the Christmas decoration along the canal. The people of the Karnemelksloot arrange them each year themselves. Walk on to the Burgemeester Martenssingel, Leo used to walk here on his way to town. [In the old days the Karnemelksloot was a dyke, which was turned into a canal in the early 14th century. In those days it was mainly used for the transportation of fodder to the city by pig farmers and cloysters holding pigs.]

3 - The School - Walk up the Burgemeester Martenssingel and keep to the left. You’ll walk into a school playground.

[In 2002 the Gouda comprehensive school Leo Vroman was named after Leo, whom was a student at this school when it was still a Higher Civic School. Leo’s father was a physics teacher there and his mother taught maths until her marriage. To make place for a business incubator for young creative start-ups the school has recently vacated the left side of the building.]

Twelve was too young, that was the rule, to enter the Higher Civic School.

of the physics he taught; for example, about Joule.

“mijn eigen Gouda” – Leo Vroman Walk back to the Dutoitstraat (in the direction of the Karnemelksloot on your right) and take the first right. You’re now in the Krugerlaan. Walk on to nr. 25. 4 - Krugerlaan nr. 25 - The birthplace of Leo Vroman. The family lived here only a few years until their home at nr. 87, a new-build at the time, was finished. Walk on to nr. 87. 5 - Krugerlaan nr. 87 - Though not his birthplace, it is considered Leo’s paternal home. Here he said farewell to his parents on the 14th of may 1940, before fleeing from the German Occupation. To commemorate this fact a plaque was placed, containing a verse of Leo’s: “When I was little and this country hadn’t yet…”. Leo, his wife and their daughters have been visiting the Krugerlaan on several occasions. Walk back to the Zoutmanstraat (opposite Krugerlaan nr. 81) end turn left at the end of it. You’re now on the Burgemeester Martenssingel again. Pass the water and turn to your left.

6 - Willem de Zwijgerschool (Burgemeester Martenssingel nr. 72) - This used to be Leo’s primary school; nowadays it’s the freshmen extension of the Gouda Comprehensive School Leo Vroman.

Turn right at the next crossing. You’re now on the IJssellaan. Walk on and take a look at the first town-development outside the city centre. Turn left into the Dijkstraat and walk through to the start of this walk:

1/7 - The Chocolate factory - this building has had many functions though it started life out as a chocolate factory form Steenland. After Steenland left the building, it became town-hall. In 2014, after a renovation, it started to house public library, local archive, printing workshop and restaurant Kruim.

On top of the Chocolate factory is the sculpture of Leo

Vroman made by Jeroen Henneman. The sculpture was unveiled on the 100th birthday of Leo (10th of april

2015), in the presence of his family.

Walk nr. 5 Windmill track – Gouda Centre Gouda’s history by its windmills: this walk will take you through Gouda to still existing windmills and places where important windmills once stood. - Length: 3,6 km (2.5 miles). Start: Gouda Train station

Map Gouda Windmills Map of the walk

Start: Leave the rail station via Exit CENTRUM and follow the signposts “CENTRUM” over Vredebest to Kleiwegplein. Cross the street at the crossing and walk over the bridge (Kleiwegbrug).

At the end of the bridge (‘Kleiwegbrug’) once stood the northern city gate (‘Kleiwegpoort’). The gate build in the 16th century, was demolished in 1843. Nearly all windmills stood outside the city walls until the war against the Spanish occupation (the Eighty Years’ War) started and the decision was taken to take all buildings outside of the city walls down. This meant that the mills were to be reconstructed inside of the walls, to avoid the Spanish army (ab)using them. It was in this time that a new mill was constructed near the ‘Kleiwegpoort’ named “de Cleyweg” / “de Noord”. This was a so-called Post mill, ‘standerd mill’ in Dutch, the oldest type of flourmill/windmill in Holland.

This mill was replaced (before 1832) by a ‘stellingmolen’, made of stone and with a gallery to enable operating the mill. This type of windmill is a flourmill as well. The North

Page 22: Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd · 2017-11-27 · Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd edition, 1 5 December 2017 (Be aware, approx.

was not to last long and was taken down in 1863. The round shape of the current building still corresponds with the floor plan of the old mill. Wind mill ‘The North (the second,

replaced mill)’ right behind the city gate ‘Kleiwegpoort’. Drawing A.D. 1840 by Gijsbertus Johannes Versluy.

Enter the main shopping street ‘Kleiweg’ and take the second side street on the right, left side of the canal (Blauwstraat) and walk on until the street’s name changes into Turfmarkt. The name of this street Turfmarkt, (Peat market), reminds us of the flourishing medieval trade in peat in Gouda. Peat was extracted from the mires just outside town and was used as fuel, both to heat the houses and for the many beer breweries and potteries in town. Ships were to come into town, and the height of the still existing ‘Trappenbrug’ (literally: Stairs Bridge) was made so that the low boats could just sail under it. Around 1580 the city’s peat storage moved to ‘de Raam’ and ‘Turfsingel’. Alongside the ‘Turfmarkt’ small companies and new houses were built. Walk up to the Stairs Bridge, take the left into ‘Geertje de Bultsteeg’, and turn right at the end. This area is supposed to once contain a ‘Mill alley’, ‘Molensteeg’. Approx. round 1350 one of the two mills mentioned in Gouda’s eldest history was to be found at this very spot. In 1353 Lord of Gouda, Jan van Beaumont, sold the right of using wind to Gouda, which entitled the town to build windmills and ‘catch’ the wind. No other constructions were allowed nearby windmills, to facilitate a continuous undisturbed ‘catching’ of wind all the time. In these days this small alley in Gouda’s historic centre was a sort of Green, a meadow in town. Go to the left into the ‘Looierspoort’. Turn the right into the ‘Lange Groenendaal’ at the end of this alley. Walk to the end of the street to reach the canal ‘Lage Gouwe’. Gouwe is the river that gave Gouda its name. On the banks of river Gouwe several oil mills stood. These mills were to process the hempseed used to produce yarn and rope. The seed was also crushed into oil to use for lighting and for the production of soap. The industrial high days were around 1620, when approx. 30 oil mills could be found in town. Cross the ‘Gouwe’ over the bridge (St. Joostbrug), go left and take the first right into the ‘Aaltje Bakstraat’. Walk on, cross ‘de Raam’ into the ‘Vlamingstraat’ until the end. Take a few minutes near the bridge and look around.

Page 23: Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd · 2017-11-27 · Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd edition, 1 5 December 2017 (Be aware, approx.

At the end of the street, ‘Vlamingstraat’ another post mill was constructed around the end of the 16th century. It was named “de Croot”. This flourmill was taken down somewhere between 1585-1744. When the 19th century came to a close a so-called clay mill was built here. This mill is thought to be used for the many potteries in this area, of which ‘Plateelfabriek Zuid-Holland’ was famous all over the World. Please also take a look in ‘De Kleischuur’ a former clay storage barn for clay imported from England. The barn, a national monument, was recently restored and now has an organic restaurant in it. On the map, dated 1873, a small wooden mill with a square floor plan and round construction can be seen. The windmill vanished on the official map made by the cadastre in 1877.

There used to be many mills in this part of town, as this is the west side of town; and “west equals wind” in Holland. The mills were built higher than the city walls, to ensure an optimal catching of the wind. This area, around the Turfsingel, is also where the rivers Hollandsche IJssel and Gouwe cross. Raw materials were immediately processed in the mills and used in the industry. For this reason Gouda’s oldest industrial area was established here, from soap to yarn production, potteries and the Gouda Candle Factory.

On the right (street called ‘Vest) another windmill, a stellingmolen, a mill with a gallery stood named “de Korenbloem” (= the Cornflower), build in 1751 and partly demolished in 1926.

This mill, with a round floor plan, was subsiding to the right and was therefore nicknamed “de scheve molen“ the crooked mill. On the 15th of April what was left of the mill was destroyed in a fire.

Turn left onto the ‘Vest’ and walk to flour mill the ‘Roode Leeuw’ (Red Lion). This mill is still operational.

A round ‘stellingmolen’ (mill with gallery) made of bricks. “De

Page 24: Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd · 2017-11-27 · Printable programme overview Gouda by Ca ndlelight, 6 2 nd edition, 1 5 December 2017 (Be aware, approx.

Roode Leeuw” is the largest of the still existing mills in Gouda. A predecessor flourmill was built in 1619. In 1727 that mill was replaced by a round brick made mill that was destroyed by a fire in 1769, The mill was rebuild in 1771 and stayed operational until the first two decades of the 20th century. Miller Galama, owner of “De Korenbloem” tried to acquire this mill to stop the competition. When he offered ‘De Roode Leeuw’ for sale to be demolished the Gouda City council stopped his plans. The town acquired the mill and started its exterior renovation. This was one of the first mills ever in the Netherlands to be bought by a City council in order to restore and retain the original building. Since 1985 the mill is again fully operational as a flourmill processing different types of grain and producing several types of flour.

This windmill is open to visitors, has a shop and can accommodate groups up to 25 people for guided tours, but the latter only by pre booking. E-mail: [email protected] or tel: +31182522041. Visiting hours are on Thursday (9 am – 2 pm) and Saturdays (9 am – 4 pm). http://www.molendatabase.nl/nederland/molen.php?nummer=971 Resume your walk in the direction of the historic harbour, ‘Museumhaven’. During this short walk you pass another spot where another flourmill once proudly processed grain. It was called ‘ De Wip’ and was demolished in 1750. On the right a view to the historic harbour with the lock, ‘Mallegatsluis’ in the 17th century the most used lock in Holland. In the former shippers waiting room the Museumcafé “het IJsselhuis” is open for a short break. http://www.museumhavencafe.nl/ (Check for opening hours) Continue on the ‘Vest’ and turn right via ‘de Bogen’ to the ‘Veerstal’.

First side street at the left is the Peperstraat. On this spot a small fulling Mill was built in 1620 to ‘full’ wool as part of the textile industry. To produce a firmer texture manpower was used literally by letting people walk over the fabric. In 1414 a sluice gate was constructed between the canal in the ‘Peperstraat’ and the river Hollandsche IJssel, through the dyke. On top of this gate a small fulling mill was placed.

The mill used the tide of the river, running on the flows of the water due to the tide differences. That’s the difference with a traditional water mill, which runs on a water wheel outdoors. In the fulling mill the water wheel is placed indoors. The gate was larger than the water wheel. This enabled a multi purpose usage of the mill, because there was space for flushing water flows to clean the water in the many canals in town. In approx. 1625 the fulling mill got company, a malt mill was built to process malt to facilitate the many breweries in Gouda in the 17th century. The small fulling mill was taken down in 1941. Continue your walk on the ‘Veerstal’ up to the red coloured building, ‘Tolhuis’ (Toll house). Walk around it and keep the building to your left and take the right, the east side of the canal, ‘Oosthaven. Immediately go right again and walk up to ‘De Punt’

The large fulling mill

The city council decided to develop a second (bigger) fulling mill following the success of the first version. A new water lock was constructed between the ‘Spieringstraat’ and the river “Hollandsche IJssel”. Despite now having two fulling mills at its disposal, the textile industry started to decline. Around 1650 both mills were mainly used for rope and yarn manufacturing instead of the textile industry. Later on they were transformed to facilitate wood sawing and oil production. The larger fulling mill was used for preparation of lam skin to leather, which polluted the water in the canals and produced an awful smell in town. In 1869 the operations in both fulling mills were discontinued. The water wheels were removed in 1870.

The building of the large fulling mill has been used as a warehouse for another famous industry in Gouda: cheese manufacturing. The locks are currently used to flush the water of all inner city canals in Gouda’s centre, to the rivers outside town. Early 2000 pumps were removed and the original gate system was restored to clean and flush the water in the canals on a weekly basis. The old sluice gate below the large Volmolen was renovated in 2007 and is open for visitors on the National Monuments day.

Flour mill “’t Slot” On top of the ‘Punt’ flour mill ’t Slot’ proudly watches over the river. A permit was granted in 1581 by the city council to build a standerd mill at the remains and fundaments of the recently demolished castle of the Lords of Gouda (‘Heeren van Ter Gouw’). The current windmill is the third mill at this spot. Constructed in 1831/32 at the spot of an octahedral standerd mill that was destroyed by a fire. In 1962 this mill came into the city’s ownership. It was restored and is ready for production but not operational. When the sails are rolling the mill is open for visitors. For the entrance walk around the mill from the left. Go to the left and descend the stairs into the park ‘Houtmansplantsoen’. Don’t forget to turn around and have a last view on this beautiful mill and houses next to it. Keep to the left and go to the exit of the park across the small bridge into the ‘Spieringstraat’. Continue the walk up to the second part of the street until you arrive at the ‘Willem Vroesenhuis’ only just at the opposite of the small alley to the St. John’s church, take a left on to the ‘Molenwerf’. In this area Gouda was established when in the 12th century a fortification was built on a motte (hill). At the east a large farm with residential buildings, granaries and stables were constructed and on the west side of the motte an early castle was erected. The Lords of Gouda owned the grounds. The early castle’s family chapel was the predecessor of the current Saint John’s church. Surrounding this early settlement Gouda developed. The fortification on the hill was the safe ground during floods and in wartime, later in the 12th century the inhabitants started with the construction of

dykes to protect the land from the water from rivers Gouwe and Hollandse IJssel. The Lords of Gouda reigned until 1296. They were probably affected and maybe involved in the assassination of Count Floris V, which lead to the downfall of their house. In 1304 the motte-and-bailey castle was destroyed, probably due to war activities. Nevertheless over time new houses were built at this spot. It is very likely a mill was constructed as well but this mill was again demolished in 1368, because it could no longer catch enough wind due to the many surrounding houses and buildings. The name of the street however still remains ‘Molenwerf’, Millyard.

The Moat, the water originally surrounding the fortification can still be recognized when walking in the ‘Molenwerf’.

Walk on on de ‘Molenwerf’ to the canal ‘Oosthaven’ and turn right. Walk on through ‘Dubbele Buurt’ and ‘Wijdstraat’ to the Market Square. Pass the old town hall by the left, keep to the left and leave the market via ‘Hoogstraat’ and ‘Kleiweg’ back to the train station. We hope you enjoyed this walk through town.
