This month students and staff are continuing to focus on 21
st Century Teaching and Learning
through the lens of Numeracy. Our classrooms continue to encourage our students to engage in math activities that promote their student voice, provoke their mathematical thinking, and create in our student’s passion for mathematical learning and inquiry across the curriculum. We encourage families to ask good questions at home that allow students to make important connections between math and real life.

Shaw Warms Up
The Me to We Club will be holding a Winter Coat Drive starting November 1st until November 10th. They are asking for anyone who has an old winter coat that they don’t need anymore to donate it. The coats should be in fairly good condition and clean.
All coats will be donated to the Covenant House in order for them to be given out to homeless people in and around Brampton and surrounding area.
Thank you in advance for all your generous donations!
Me to We
Remembrance Day Assembly
Our Remembrance Day Assembly will be held at 10:45 on November 11th. Remembrance Day is
a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty as well as, to appreciate the many men and women around the world who continue to fight in the name of freedom. Our students will have the opportunity to receive a poppy (donations are gratefully received). We ask that all staff, students and families wearing a poppy please respectfully place their poppy on their left side, symbolising that you keep those who died close to your heart. During our assembly, Shaw’s choir will be singing a new Remembrance Day song, “Listen to Hope”, written by our own Mr. Stefan Fernetich. It is a song to inspire change and respect for our differences. Thank you to the staff and students participating in the Remembrance Day assembly.

This Month in Shaw Athletics …
October had the Shaw Hawk’s runners out in full force as well as the beginning of a new
season for 2 teams. The Shaw Public School Cross Country team endured early morning and
after school practices in warm and cool temperatures. On October 19th the team travelled to Heart
Lake Conservation Area for their divisional meet. The Shaw runners represented their school and
despite a couple of injuries all of the Shaw Hawks completed their races. Shaw’s top 2 finishers
were Jahzaiah L. And Navleen J. with 13th and 15
th place finishes respectively. Great effort Shaw
Cross Country team members and thank you to their coaches, Ms. Cosgrave and Mrs. Carson.
The two new teams that began their season are the boys and girls volleyball teams. Both
teams have begun practicing hard and working on skills and strategies under coaches Ms.
Thomas and Mrs. Asomaning (girls) and Mr. Partynski (boys). We wish them luck in their upcom-
ing games and tournaments.
International Walk to School Day
On Wednesday, October 5th, Shaw Public School took part in a new school initiative to help
promote healthy, environmentally friendly, active habits. The initiative was International Walk to
School Day. We accepted the challenge from neighbouring schools, Eagle Plains, Mountain Ash
and Robert J. Lee, to see which school would have the highest percentage of students walking to
school on that day. The Shaw Public School community including students, families and staff
came out in droves and made the day a great success. There were many walkers, rollers and
even a special staff member (thank you Mrs. Green) on a yellow bicycle helping to encourage
everyone to walk to school. The local police chief and officers were there to cheer us on as well
as some students from Sandalwood Heights. The music was pumping, walking stickers were
handed out and special thank you messages were distributed by Shaw’s Interact team members.
October 5th saw 92% of Shaw’s students walk, roll or ride to school. This was the highest
percentage out of all of the neighbouring schools which brought Shaw the Walk to School Day
trophy. Come check out the trophy which is found in the display case in the front hall of the
school. Thank you goes out to all of the Shaw students and families that joined us on this day.
Please remember that walking to school doesn’t have to stop because International Walk to
School Day has passed. You can walk, ride or roll to school every day to help the environment,
get some exercise and to socialize with friends.

2nd Annual Cram-a-Cruiser Food Drive December 5th- December 16th
We invite the students, staff and parents of Shaw Public School to join us for our 12nd Annual
Cram-a-Cruiser Holiday Food Drive. Our goal is to fill as many police cruisers and the Knights
Table food bank van with non-perishable food items to help the local food bank through the
holiday season!
Our local police are partnering with us and collecting food donations at their local unit to
contribute to Shaw’s food drive. We are also in the process of inviting community partners to join
us. Together we can improve the holidays for many families.
We will collect food items from Mon. December 5th through to Fri. December 16th. The items
collected will be displayed in the front hall until the morning of the Cram-a-Cruiser. That morning
we will work together to load of the food and non-perishable food items into the police cruisers
and the Knights Table van. It will be an inspirational day for all. During the food drive, each day
of the week will be dedicated to collecting specific items to ensure the food bank can meet its ar-
eas of need:
Monday, December 5th :Cereal, Canned goods
Tuesday, December 6st: Pancake mix, Syrup, Pasta sauce, Pasta, Canned Goods
Wednesday, December 7th: Rice, Ketchup, Instant Coffee, Canned goods
Thursday, December 8th: Peanut Free Packaged Lunch snacks, Canned goods
Friday, December 9th: Diapers, Baby formula, Grocery Gift cards, Canned goods
Extra items may be brought in through to the 16th. The more donations the fewer
hungry tummies! LET’S MAKE INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCES together.
Parents are invited to watch the event from the sidewalk in front of Shaw Public School on
December 16th at 9:20 as the students make a positive difference for their local community. Our
students, staff and parents believe they can make important contributions and they know they
can achieve the goal of making the greatest food donation in Peel in order to make everyone’s
holiday enjoyable.

REPORTING AN ABSENCE
Beginning Sept. 6, 2016, the Peel District School Board will implement a new automated absence
reporting system for all students in its elementary schools. All parents/guardians will need to report
their children’s full-day absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from school via a new
SafeArrival system.
Once your child starts school and you provide the school with an email address, you will receive
an email invitation from Synrevoice Technologies. The invitation will include login information.
Parents who do not have an email address on file at the school can visit pdsb.schoolconnects.com
and choose CREATE LOGIN to create your account and receive login credentials. Parents need
to have a cell phone that is capable of receiving text messages to complete the setup process.
The cell phone number must be on file with the school. These login credentials are needed to login
both online and with the mobile app.
SafeArrival will allow you to report your child(ren)’s absences quickly and conveniently in one of
three ways:
You can call into an automated, interactive telephone system via a toll free number—
1-855-209-6155.
You can log into a website, pdsb.schoolconnects.com, to access a SafeArrival Parent Portal.
An account can be set up to report absences.
You can download the SafeArrival mobile application for Apple and Android devices.
Please report your child’s absences before the start of the school day. Late arrivals and/or
early departures should be reported as soon as possible.
Benefits of using SafeArrival include:
Phone, website and mobile app options are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You can report your child(ren)’s absences in advance (e.g., doctor’s appointment).
Keep phone numbers and email addresses up-to-date.
If your child’s absence is not reported in advance, the automated notification system will contact
parents to inform of a student’s absence and will provide an opportunity to verify the absence. The
automated notification system will contact parents/guardians at multiple contact numbers until one
of the designated contacts is reached. If our automated system is unable to reach a designated
contact, office staff will follow up. By reporting your child absent in advance, using the
SafeArrival toll-free number, SafeArrival website or SafeArrival mobile app, you will not
receive a call.
If you have any questions or require any assistance, please contact the school.

#ChooseAction on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week
The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during
the week of Nov. 20 to 26, 2016.
This year, we ask our Peel community to ‘#ChooseAction to Be the Difference’ in their classes, offices, schools, communities or world, in order to make these spaces better places for everyone. The Peel Board would like to hear about the big and small actions, the pledges, the promises and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask that you take a moment to share your #ChooseAction moments on social media.
Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bullying happens. Though the programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught to:
define bullying
identify forms of bullying
identify the shifting roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the bystander or the trusted advocate
determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment
understand that bullying is a relationship problem with relationship solutions
determine positive ways to interact with others in an accepting, inclusive way
demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school communities
Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on Sept. 1, 2012. For more information, visit: www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying/ or www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html.

Traffic safety in our community
Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents
safe while commuting to and from school.
Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.
Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on
any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school.
Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before
driving past them.
When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area
that is designed to keep students safe.
Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into
traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.
Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before
you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.
During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit
the car onto the curb.
Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff,
students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect.
Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to
your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.
Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never
“jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street.
Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.
