Dear DHS Parents and Guardians, I hope that you and your student(s) have had a positive start to the school year and look forward to an exciting year ahead of us. Although it is sad to see the summer go by so quickly, the beginning of the school year is one of my favor- ite times of the year. With the start of the year, our school halls come alive again with energy and enthusiasm as stu- dents see their friends again and consider all of the great possibilities for the year to come. As the new principal, it has been extremely rewarding to witness this enthusiasm when I meet and see students in action in the classroom and activ- ities outside of the classroom. I look forward to continuing this positive culture and climate as we progress into the school year. Just as we are excited to see one another at the start of the school year, we are also excited that all construction projects were completed this summer. This will be the first full school year that our students will be able to enjoy the renovated library, Warrior gym, pool, stadium bleachers and air conditioned classrooms. I am thankful to our students, staff, par- ents and guardians for your patience and understanding during the years of construction that you have endured. If you have the opportunity to come to the school for an activity or event, please feel free to stop by these new spaces. As we look ahead to the rest of the school year, I would encourage you to review our online calendar for a variety of different activities and events. Some important dates to mark on your calendar for September include Open House on Thursday, September 8 and Homecoming game on Friday, September 16. In addition, the school district will be hosting strategic plan meetings for parents on Monday, September 19 and Friday, September 23. The strategic plan meetings are an opportunity for you to identify the things you love about DHS, as well as areas you would like to see improved. Your input is extremely important as we look to establish goals for this year and into the future. You will receive addi- tional details about these strategic plan meetings in the next few weeks. Lastly, September happens to be Attendance Awareness Month, so I would be remiss not to mention our goal for the school year.. Last year, our overall school-wide attendance average was 95.92%. Our goal this year is to increase this average to be about 96%. We are striving to increase attendance because research has shown that attendance has a major impact on student learning. If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unex- cused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom. We understand that students will get sick and need to stay home occasionally. The important thing is to get your student to school as often as possible. Thank you for all of your effort and support to ensure your student attends school on a daily basis. I look forward to seeing each student engaged in the classroom each day. Have a great September! I look forward to seeing you at Open House. Kathryn Anderson Principal Principal’s Corner Warrior E-News September, 2016 KATHRYN ANDERSON, Principal

Booster Club congratulates our Fall 2016 Warrior Athletes and wishes them good luck in their

upcoming seasons. The best way for parents to support their student athletes is to join Booster

Club. We traditionally fund a number of coaches’ requests for equipment and facilities

improvements each year. Booster Club pays for concussion testing for all student athletes, CSL

Leadership Conference attendance, senior scholarships and many other items. We have recently

donated various pieces of training room equipment, golf rain suits, scoreboard upgrades in our

new pool and gym, a gymnastics floor, wind screens for the tennis courts, and tents for the cross

country teams. Booster Club also raised funds to pay for half the cost of the synthetic turf

surface on Adams Field. Most of our funding comes through membership dues and Warrior

Wear sales. All of our membership categories include a Family Athletic Pass, which provides

admission for parents and pre-high school age children to attend all regular season home

contests. The Family Athletic Pass is also good for a $3 discount on a dinner orders at Il Forno

(dine-in or carryout). Please visit our website: https://www.memberplanet.com/dhsboosterclub

to purchase your membership.

NEW THIS YEAR: Gold and silver level memberships now include a subscription to NFHS

Network, a web service which will be live-streaming many DHS home varsity games (last year,

over 300 events in most every sport were streamed). This service allows subscribers to watch

games online wherever you are with your smartphone, tablet, computer, or Apple TV app. Up to

3 concurrent sessions are allowed for each subscription – you can watch while you’re on the road

and the grandparents can tune in at the same time! NFHS Network subscriptions are available

for $35 for all other membership levels.

Also, we are happy to announce the Il Forno Membership Challenge for each sports season.

The team with the highest percentage of Booster Club member families (across all levels –

varsity, JV, soph, frosh) will win a pizza party. To be eligible for the fall season challenge, make

sure you sign up for your Booster Club membership no later than September 30.

If you are a local business owner, we offer a number of exciting advertising / sponsorship

opportunities. Booster Club is the only approved outlet for advertising on the DHS campus. Our

sponsorship programs include opportunities to advertise your business on our flexible fence sign

panels (used for crowd control and outfield fencing on our athletic fields), 55” video screens in

the athletic wing, and digital scoreboards. Please contact Brad Emalfarb ([email protected])

for more information.

We are still looking for volunteers to assist with Warrior Wear sales or on our fundraising,

communications, and membership committees. If you are interested in helping in any of these

areas, please contact us at [email protected] or attend one of our meetings – generally

held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm in Room A100. Our next meeting is

scheduled for Tuesday, September 6.

We have a power-packed fall line up so mark your calendars -- Tuesday, September 20th – Screenagers movie: Growing Up in the Digital Age 7 p.m. Deerfield High School Auditorium For parents AND their students (recommended for kids ages 11+) Is your child scrolling through life with rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? You’re not alone. Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids -- part of a growing generation spending on average 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. In Screenagers, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she explores how learning, playing and socializing online affects kids' developing attention spans, fragile self-esteems and moral instincts. She probes into the vulnerable corners of family life and explores the struggles arising from social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, funny stories, as well as many expert insights, Screenagers reveals not only how tech time impacts our kids’ growing minds but provides parents with practical solutions to help their kids develop self-control and find balance in their digital lives. A short post-film discussion with local professionals will follow. Runtime is 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Thurs., September 29th – Parenting Your High School Student in the Digital Age 7 – 8:30 p.m. Deerfield High School Library Joe Taylor, DHS’s IT expert and father to a teenager, will continue the conversation stemming from the Screenagers film (shown at DHS on 9/20) on maintaining an open dialogue with your teen and finding balance in our digital world. He will give parents a “tour” of the various types of technology used in today's classrooms and-- through helpful hints and available resources -- suggest ways that we can support our teens' online homework/studies while keeping them “cyber safe.” Tuesday, October 18th -- Finding Success! Unconventional Tips from a Millennial Entrepreneur Parents AND Students Welcome 7:30 p.m. Deerfield High School Auditorium Ted Gonder, a nationally acclaimed social entrepreneur, member of the US President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans and co-founding CEO of Moneythink, will discuss his journey from an unfocused student to a millennial entrepreneur at the young age of 24. From his work helping thousands of teens and his conversations with hundreds of families, Ted will share his practical and sometimes unconventional advice on helping teens gain an edge in school, create pathways to success and stay balanced in life. Ted’s presentation will cover topics such as: How to supercharge motivation, self-reliance, and learning in today’s world as well as the top things that he told himself before college: * Talk 20% of the time; Listen 80% of the Time * Quit Early, Quit Often * & Many More

Wednesday, October 19th -- Ready to Hand Over the KEYS? 7:00 – 8:30 pm – Deerfield Public Library Parents AND Students Welcome Join our panel of experts, including DHS Resource Officer Anthony Kropp, as they discuss how to keep your teen safe on the roadways. They will address eye-opening statistics surrounding distracted driving and causes of teen crashes and demonstrate ways to support your teen as s/he navigates the new driver experience. The conversation will also include newly enacted laws and local curfews. Parents will find themselves examining their own driving behaviors!

WHY JOIN DHS PTO

Thank you to all parents who have joined the DHS PTO.

For those who have not yet joined, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. The

PTO is a volunteer organization that depends on your $50 membership fee in order to

operate. Specifically, we need your membership to continue to provide our DHS

community with student programs, educational items and services that enhance our

school. Without parent support we would not have been able to provide $15,000 in gifts

to the school last year. Please read below about some of the amazing gifts we were

able to provide to benefit our DHS students:

FROM COUNSELING DEPARTMENT: The PTO has been a great support to the

Counseling Department when we have a need for items above and beyond our normal

budgeting allowance. Recently PTO funds were used to help purchase new couches for

our support group room. It makes such a difference for students to have a welcoming

and comfortable place to sit during group conversations!

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: Thank you so much for all of the fund raising that you do to

make our wonderful PTO gifts possible! While the budget provides for our basic needs,

the gifts from the PTO allow us to enrich classroom experiences for students in our

classroom. For example, students in Freshman Physics were VERY excited when we

set the new Snap Circuit kits out on the lab tables instead of the traditional wire, bulbs,

and switches used for the past ten years. The gifts do make a difference for your

children.

FROM MATH DEPARTMENT: The PTO's contribution enabled the department's

purchase of TI Navigator components that brought the TI-Nspire calculators students

use to a new level. By allowing for easy sharing of files locally within the classroom, the

Navigators opened up avenues for teachers and made communication and

collaboration the focus while using 21st century tools.

Please join now by going to www.dhspto.org and login. Membership is $50 but it is well

worth it. As a benefit for your membership, you will also receive access to the entire

student body directory.
