Welcome to our first Newsletter for Term 3.
A lot has happened at PHS over the School Holidays and Week 1.
During the school holidays I was involved in a number of community project meetings –
including PHS involvement in a Community Wellbeing and Resilience initiative, the Com-
munity Bakery project and discussions with TAFE SA around plans to expand our Cert II
Kitchen Operations. As the key High School in Peterborough, we are continuing to grow
the educational offerings and opportunities for our students in a substantial way.
We also completed a number of important grounds and facilities planning and site
works:
Our Tree Audit was completed, making our school more neat, tidy and safe.
The remainder of our Stone Building classrooms were painted and refreshed.
The front of the School Gymnasium was re-developed.
Oval restoration and maintenance work continued.
A number of students volunteered and worked with our Grounds person in school
refurbishment projects as part of their careers education.
We have a number of further exciting school upgrades locked-in for 2020, including our
School Gym floor upgrade and Stone Building renovations, to name a few. These pro-
jects will continue to provide a high quality and engaging Learning Environment for our
students well into the future. Stay tuned for more information. This is part of our vision
for our school not only as a great school, but the best school for our children and com-
munity.
You would have read recently that I will be on leave from PHS for the next 18 months,
to take up the final Principal position for Edward John Eyre High School, my previous
school in Whyalla. While I am looking forward to this opportunity, I am passionate
about PHS and will be saddened to be away during this time.
On a personal note, I would like to thank the school community, Governing Council and
Peterborough community for our strong partnership, work and connection over the
past 18 months. We have collectively achieved great things for our young people, our
school and our community. Not only have we seen the educational achievement contin-
ue to grow, but we have watched our young people increase their pride, confidence,
thrive and grow.
A big congratulations to Sonja Mercer who has been appointed as Principal in my ab-
sence and will capably lead the school. Sonja has been an important part of our school
improvement journey and her appointment is very well-deserved. I have every confi-
dence that our school will continue to thrive!
It’s been a pleasure to lead Peterborough High School and contribute to the Peterbor-
ough Community over the past 18 months and I look forward to opportunities to do so
again in future.

Deputy Principal’s News
Welcome to Term 3, which is shaping up to be yet another busy term with Stage 1 and 2 students working
on finishing their SACE studies and units as we head towards the second half of the year.
From the Sports Committee Knock out and MNSEC based sports are now resuming with 8/9 Soccer, Open Boys Badminton, Open Boys
Knock out Netball, Open Volleyball and Fast Five Netball for Year 9 and 10 students on the schedule for
this term. Students have had the opportunity to sign up for the Open sections of the sports listed and ar-
rangements are currently being made for these competitions to be run.
Kitchen Operations The Kitchen Operations group had their first session last Term and is starting with 12 participants. Stu-
dents in the group are pictured below the shot was taken at the start of their first practical session in the
Home Ec Centre. Students will complete their Kitchen Operations course in 18 weeks and will earn them-
selves 40 SACE Credits towards the completion of their SACE certificate. Our projected numbers for 2021
are looking great so we will be programming to run this Kitchen Operations Course again in the second se-
mester of 2021. This course is also open to members of the community. Please contact me at PHS if you
would like details about this course.
Oval The construction and demolition work on site has been completed for the time being so the oval area has
been reopened to students for use at Lunchtime. I think you will agree that the outlook and appearance of
our school site is neat and inviting.

There are always exciting, new and innovative things happening at PHS. Congratula-
tions to David Marino and Sonja Mercer on their new jobs. Let’s see what adventure

Learning Intervention
Ms Amey and I have been working with our Secondary Learners Directorate Officer,
Ben Muggleton support our intervention SSO Implement, Ms Tracey Challans, imple-
ment a Literacy Program.
This week, a small number of students started our MacqLit Program with Ms Challans.
This program support students increasing their literacy levels. At the end of Week 10, we
will know if this program has been successfully for these students, and envision this
program be implemented across the school to increase writing and reading skills.
Transition At the end of this term on Wednesday of Week 10, we are welcoming the Year 7’s from
Peterborough Primary School and Saint Joseph’s School Peterborough to Peterborough
High School. This will be an exciting opportunity for them to experience. Their second
day will be in Term 4. Multiple visits have been scheduled before these times, to be-
come familiar with the Peterborough High School.
Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT) Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 students have their PAT-Reading and PAT-Maths Tests starting
from Week 7 this term until Week 10. The period has been extended to Term 4 Week 2,
however, we are confident that it will be completed to our PHS PAT schedule.

House Team. These students for each of their houses included below.
Middle School Assessment Plans Ms Amey, our Quality Learning and Teaching Leader has implemented Middle School As-
sessment Plans across Peterborough High School. For each student, and for each subject,
students will have an Assessment Plan which includes assessment information such as due
dates, Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard and Content Descriptors. This plan is
has many benefits, but for parents and caregivers, more communication allowing you to
support your child’s learning. You can see this stuck in students books, and written in
student diaries from Week 4 this Term.

As an introductory lesson to Year 11’s entering their Semester 2 subjects, the Year 11 Scientific
Studies students were given the opportunity to investigate the amount of energy released from a
variety of food choices. This fit in perfectly with their focus for the semester – Food.
Students investigated the energy content from an apple, strawberry, potato, lettuce and biscuit
cracker.
This was achieved by alighting the food substance, placing the food substance under a boiling-
tube of water then measuring the temperature of the water from the heat released.
Students used mathematical skills to calculate the energy released from food per gram (J).
The biscuit cracker released the most energy from food per gram (J). Shown below is an image
of Kane safely undertaking the practical.
