MARCH 14th GRANDPARENTS DAY - WEDNESDAY 27 TH MARCH 9.15am – 11.00am Last year we were unable to hold one of our favourite annual events – GRANDPARENTS DAY, due to the building works. This special day is normally held during Education Week in May, however, in consideration of the grounds and available parking spaces, we have decided to hold this event on Wednesday 27 th March. A notice has already been sent home with children about this day. We are looking forward to having grandparents in our school grounds to see the new facilities, visit our wonderful classrooms and participate in some fun activities with their grandchildren. The format for the morning is as follows – BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION A reminder to parents that the Department of Education & Training requires Principals to follow policy with respect to supervision before and after school. Our policy states: Supervision before and after school The school will provide staff supervision for students arriving before school between 8.45am and 9.00am. The school will provide staff supervision for students after school be- tween 3.30pm and 3.45pm. EMERGENCY DRILL The school conducts various emergency and evacuation drills. We are practising an on-site evacua-tion drill on Thursday 21st March. The children will all be assembling on the oval on this occasion. Parents assisting in the classrooms at 12:30pm on this day will need to follow the instructions and evacuate as well. Please note that if this was a real evacuation, parents would be notified by a text message. This is just a practice. COMPASS TIPS As mentioned previously, we are encouraging parents to access COMPASS on a regular basis. The system is really quite simple to use and contains information relevant to your child. A substantial number of secondary schools utilise COMPASS so it is well worthwhile getting used to this before your child reaches secondary school. To assist you with becoming proficient on the system, there are some useful tips for parents under the COMPASS link on our website: http://thebasinps.vic.edu.au/ PREP ENROLMENTS I have commenced tours four days a week with prospective parents and interest in our school is once again high. We have a number of tours already booked until the end of this term and into the early weeks of Term 2. The positive feedback I receive during the tours is very pleasing and I’m so very proud of our staff and students. If you have a 2020 prep child, I urge you to collect an enrolment pack from the office. POSITIVE PARENTING WORKSHOP Last Wednesday morning we had 60+ parents attend the Positive Parenting session with Dr Milê Glamcesvski. The goal of this session was to provide parents with strategies to develop and maintain healthy relationships with their child/ren. He was very interesting, entertaining and delivered his messages through personal stories. Milê also answered numerous questions from parents and assured us all that we are doing a great job and to not forget that. PLANNING DAYS Whilst our school structure is based on levels for grades, a strength of our school is the whole school practices and planning that teachers undertake in teaching and learning. This approach is based on collegiality and collaboration of the school’s staff who share a responsibility for student learning. In the last week of term 1, teachers in their levels, will be released for a day to plan next term’s curriculum and assessment tasks as well as the Challenged Based Learning (CBL) unit. Please be aware that in releasing class teachers to plan a rigorous curriculum together, the children will be taught by either one of our Specialist teachers or a regular Casual Replacement Teacher (CRT). SOME GREAT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR KIDS AFTER SCHOOL When children come home from school, parents often ask the same old questions ‘How was your day?’, ‘Do you have homework?’, etc. A website that I like to visit occasionally had some really good questions to ask your children that will help start up a conversation rather than one word answers. Here’s some of my favourites:

- What made you smile today? - Can you tell me something kind you did today? - Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday. - What made your teacher smile? - What kind of person were you today?

END OF TERM Parents are reminded that Term 1 ends on Friday 5th April. Children will be dismissed at 2:30pm. Easter Monday is on the 22nd April, therefore the first day of Term 2 is Tuesday 23rd April and the ANZAC Day Public Holiday is on Thursday 25th April so a short three day week to start the term off.
