Principal’s Message This week is Book Week and as you’ve probably noticed from Mrs Conrick’s newsletter messages the theme is ‘Escape to Everywhere’. This year’s theme captures what I love about books, you can partially escape from reality through reading a good book even if for just a brief moment. (Don’t worry, although I’ve been tempted, I try not to escape reality during school hours!). At school this week, the kids will have talks by two excellent children’s book authors, Jess Black and Renee Price; they will be able to visit the book fair in the library and of course we hope that they will dress up and participate in the book week parade on Thursday. To help get in the spirit, the teachers and I have something special planned for the students, to coincide with the parade on Thursday. Keep an eye on the app on Thursday when all will be revealed. Of course if you are free, we’d love it if you could join us for the parade in the 3-6 playground at 12:40pm and then stay for a picnic lunch with your children. Please note: the canteen will not be open so you will need to pack your own picnic. Last week in this section, I mentioned that we would be asking all families to participate in a survey to gather your feedback on a range of items to do with how our school operates. The information gathered through this survey will help us to determine what’s important to you and how we can work to continually improve our school. The survey is live today and you should receive an app notice this evening inviting you to participate. A survey may seem a little dull, but please be assured that it is a really quick and efficient way of gathering the views of a wide group of people. We sincerely want your feedback. The survey is only as good as the quantity of the responses received. The more of you that complete it, the more broad our understanding will be of what our community as a whole feel. It should take only about 10 minutes to complete. I promise you that we will be listening and taking note. Father’s Day Stall – donations still needed. The Father’s Day Stall will be held on Thursday 31st August. As you may have seen on our APP last weekend, the

P&C still desperately need donations of suitable small gifts that students can purchase for their dads. The aim is

always to have at least one gift available per child for purchase at the stall. If you haven’t yet donated something

or are in a position to donate another small gift, P&C would be very appreciative. We want the students to have

lots to choose from. Thanks in anticipation.

Stage 2 Awabakal Excursion – last minute reminders

Tomorrow, Wednesday 23rd August, is the Stage 2 excursion to the Awabakal Environmental Education Centre.

Students are to wear their school uniform, with comfortable walking shoes, and they must have their hat to join

in the walk through the nature reserve.

The weather forecast is perfect for our planned activities but students are encouraged to bring sunscreen and

insect repellent. They also need their recess, lunch and water bottle.

We will depart at 9.30 and return by 3pm.

It should be an interesting and informative day as we learn more about our local Aboriginal people.

Our Tribal Warrior Experience On Monday 14th of August 2017, all of Stage 2 arrived early ready to board the coach to Sydney. After a two and

a half hour drive we arrived at Sydney Harbour, near The National Maritime Museum. We went on a walk to the

wharf where we were boarding the boat from. When we were finally ready to board the Tribal Warrior we

cruised down to Clark Island. There we learned about Aboriginal ways of life such as singing and dancing. On the

boat (Mai Nawi/ Tribal Warrior) we saw heaps of things such as a seal on the stairs leading up to the Opera

House. It was so cool! We also watched the smallest boomerang being made with cardboard and scissors. We

also learnt about a plant native to Australia called Kangaroo Grass. You can use it for damper with the seeds it

produces. You can also use it for water by chewing on the white bit on the bottom and also for making baskets

and other things. On the way back on the boat we got to sit outside up on top deck. We had a mind blowing

adventure, but sadly the fun came to an end. However, we will always remember this epic journey.

Thank you teachers and everyone who organised this magnificent excursion!

Book Week

Wishing everyone a happy and fun-filled book week. I am really excited about the week ahead for students,

teachers and the wider community of Cardiff South Public School. Book Week is a time to celebrate everything

about books and reading.

Today students were delighted by our two visiting authors, Jess Black and Renee Price. Students were given an

insight into the creative minds behind the fabulous stories these talented authors have created.

The library was buzzing with excitement as our annual book fair opened at 8am this morning. The fair will be

held on Wednesday from 8am until 3.30pm and again on Thursday from 8am until the end of lunchtime. Thank

you to everyone who supports our fair this week, with items as cheap as $1, there is something for everyone.

Most books can be reordered if sold out before Thursday lunchtime.

And the most exciting event for the week is our bi-annual book week parade! I look forward to meeting lots of

characters on Thursday. Students are encouraged to wear their costumes to school and stay in them for the

duration of the day. The parade will begin at 12.40 in the playground. If it is wet weather it will be moved to the

hall and cola. If the weather is pleasant, visitors to our parade are invited to stay for a picnic style lunch. The

canteen is not open on Thursday.

The winner of the book review competition will be announced tomorrow. Can you “Guess Who’s Hiding” behind

the Book is another competition we are holding this week? Which clever student will be able to guess which

teacher escaped in a book?

Looking forward to seeing you during the week.

Kindergarten Explore Oakvale Farm

Last Thursday, K Silver and K Gold went to Oakvale farm. We

had a lovely day exploring the farm and learning all about the

farm animals. While we were there we got to pat a chick and a

duckling, bottle feed the lambs, goats, piglets and ducks and

even milk the cow Daisy. We hopped on the tractor and had a

tour around the farm where we saw many more animals- the

kangaroos were even lying right on the track. After a play on

the adventure playground and some lunch we got our feed

bags and enjoyed feeding the kangaroos, llamas, donkeys and

a Texas Longhorn Cow who stuck out his big long slimy tongue

to have his pellets dropped on. Just before home time we had

the chance to go into the koala encounter and get up close to

some sleeping koalas. We had a wonderful day exploring the

farm and learning some new facts about our favourite animals.

Home Reading Journals

Students are reminded to keep bringing in their home reading journals each Friday to update the teachers with

their progress. Remember to be eligible for ‘Pizza with the Principal’ you must have read for 140 nights by the

deadline on Monday 18th September.

P&C Monthly Meeting Update

Every month the P&C meet, to discuss all things relating to the school and the benefits for our children. A summary of last week’s meeting:

We had five recipients of our “Helping Hand” cheques this year. Congratulations to Chloe Walandouw, Chloe Scanlon, Ella Daly, Jillarnie Ahoy and Sam Lowery. All reached Hunter representation in their sport.

Our silver challenge fundraiser was a great success - $764.70 raised!! This will head towards our current goal of replacing the fixed equipment.

We have had a couple of people happy to put themselves on the volunteers list for the canteen. We still need more volunteers, just contact the office or Jen in the canteen if you can help.

Fathers Day Stall is coming up fast. As every year, we seek donations to be able to run this stall. The same as the Mothers Day Stall, if we don’t receive enough donations, so that every child is able to purchase one item for their dads, we will have to organise a shopping trip to purchase items. While we are happy to do this, as we don’t wish to see any disappointed kids (or dads!!), this obviously cuts into any profits that are made on the day (all of which are used to fund things for our kids and their school). Hopefully, more donations come through in the next week, so that this won’t be the case.

There is always a Principal’s report and a Treasurer’s report every month. These are always attached to the minutes, which are available in the office at any time if anyone wishes to see these – they are open for anyone.

If anyone has anything they wish to help out with/suggest/or just find out the general goings on at the school – come along to a meeting. They are usually held on the third Wednesday of the month and are a great way to hear firsthand and new things coming up, or just general things going on at the school.
