Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa, warm greetings to you all! At Mackenzie College, we aim to foster a culture of celebrating success. Each assembly we show off our sporting triumphs, we celebrate effort in class with our effort grade draws and we have begun to formally acknowledge students when we see them putting our school values into action. This Wednesday held an assembly that celebrated excellence in academic achievement with our Subject Excellence Awards ceremony. The recipients of the award have shown that they are achieving academic grades at a high level in their subject(s).
A total of 120 students earn the award in one or more subjects, showing that senior students are tracking towards subject endorsements, and that junior students are already operating at least one sub-level above the tar-get for their year.
All recipients need a hearty congratulations for achieving such awesome results in 2020. Kia tino pai tō mahi! Great work!
Ka kite anō au i a koutou! See you all later! Jason Reid

COVID-19 Level 2 Update
Here is a quick summary of some of the features of Alert Level 2 at Mackenzie College:
• Cleaning staff have allocated more time to sterilisation of commonly contacted hard surfaces.
• All visitors to the school have to fill in the contact tracing register at the office or use our QR
code sign-in.
• Students’ movements in classes have been minimised to reduce the number of contacts to hard
surfaces. Seating plans are also in place.
• Desks have been rearranged to minimise close face to face contact.
• The community library has a tracing register in action, and students’ access to the library has
been restricted.
• Hand sanitiser is available in every classroom.
• Hygiene practices such as hand washing and cough/sneeze ‘catching’ is taught and observed.
• People who are sick are sent home (and we have a brand new thermometer to measure a stu-
dent’s temperature from a distance!)
If an Alert Level 3 was suddenly put into action we would want to get learning equipment and resources
into students’ hands as quickly as possible. Here are our general plans for two possible situations:
• If Level 3 notification was given during the school day, then the last period would be allocated
to collecting items from teachers (this includes allocating school Chromebooks where required)
• If notification was given outside school hours then the school would run a pickup system the
next day from school (if Alert Level restrictions allow for this).
Earlier this year we looked at some te reo Māori for beginners (greetings and pronunciation). Here are some useful instructions students may be familiar with in class, and useful ones for parents to practice: E tū (Please stand) E noho (Please sit) Kia tau (Settle down) Whakarongo mai (Listen to me) Titiro mai (Look towards me) Kia tere! (Hurry!) And for more confident speakers: Kaua e kōrero Quiet (don’t speak) Kuhu mai ki roto (Come in) So, here’s a heads-up… Imagine this scenario - during a heated discussion a young’un tells their parent “kia tau” or “kaua e kōrero”. In this situation, the parent may need to evaluate the tone of voice used and dish out the standard incredulous response, “Did you really just tell me to settle down and stop talking?! You are in big trouble now.”

There will be a mufti day on Friday 27th August, Daffodil Day, to
raise funds for the Cancer Society.

Student Planners Student Planners—This Fortnight
The manufacturer of your children’s planners produces some items for parents to consider as they help their child make good use of their planner. Here is an item that relates to what’s in the planners over the coming fortnight:
The Golden Rule has been the shared by generations of parents with their children, namely, treat other
people the way that you like to be treated. But what if others want to be treated in a different way to
the way that you like to be treated? A key resilience skill is having and showing empathy for others
needs and feelings, but the Golden Rule seems to be about your needs and feelings.
The Platinum Rule on the other hand is, treat other people the way that they like to be treated. It em-
braces the true meaning of showing empathy. Making the effort to discover and understand others’
needs and feelings means that your levels of social connectedness are flourishing.
As Stephen Covey once said, seek first to understand, before seeking to be understood. With students,
a great respectful relationships building activity, is to set them the task of discovering how each of the
people in their family likes to be treated. Doing this will build their social-emotional resilience capabili-
ties.
Showing empathy is about students focusing on other people, not themselves. And it’s funny how the
more they focus of understanding others, the more they begin to understand themselves. Acknowl-
edgement: Alessandra, Rath & Clifton
Whole School Conferencing On Thursday September 17 from 10am to 5pm we will be trialing whole school conferencing.
As all staff members have been allocated interviews, normal lessons will not be running that day. Stu-dents are only in attendance for their interview. Each conference will be 15 minutes. The 3-way learning conferences for each student with their caregivers and teachers are a main part of our reporting to you in Term 3. The focus at this time of the year is on how the student is managing their learning. The reason we do this, is to support students to develop as effective and independent learners. Our expectation is that students will accompany their parents/caregivers to the Learning Con-ference with their staff mentor. Full written reports for all students will be issued on Tuesday 15 September. Please bring these to the conferencing with you. If you have any questions please contact school. Denise Dooley
Lipsync 2020 Thursday 24th September (last week of the term).
Put it in your diary!
Students have auditioned and practises are underway. Letters will go out next week to all groups in-volved.
Welcome to the Maths Department Where Everyone Counts!
What a busy year we have had so far. Students have been involved in project work from Gnome homes and Treasure islands in Years 7 and 8, to planning Tree houses and developing Adventure courses for NCEA assessments, in years 11 and 12. Not to mention, all the usual fun things we do in Mathematics. We had two great nights of Maths at the Aoraki Maths Competition. There was an atmosphere of ex-citement and anticipation as we arrived at TBHS ready for the event. There were teams in each year group from all over the region - Oamaru to Twizel, Mt. Hutt and Ashburton. Students had to find the solutions to problem-solving questions. Once they had a solution, a runner delivered the answer to the scoring panel and if it was correct they collected the next question. If it was incorrect, they were sent back to work on it some more. It was certainly fun, challenging, and stressful, all at the same time. The chocolate at each table might have helped them along somewhat. Mackenzie College can be proud of how our students represented us all. This year's teams consisted of Archie Holden, Katsuto Ikai, Isaac Scott and Blake Jordan for the Year 7's. Luke O'Connor, Lachlan Crawford, Eshaa Pasaol and Eshaa Pasaol in the Year 8's. Ceara Harris, Bella Parke, Rhiley Reid & Lach-lan Hurst for the year 9’s and Kaleb O’Neill, Kate Burbery, Luke Jordan and Maya Edmondson Year 10. Thank you and well done to everyone who helped with the teams, our great parents for transporta-tion, and Mrs Linklater and Mrs Holden for organising. With the help of the excellent year 9 we repeated the fun with our own competition in the gym for maths week. Year 9 supervised the runners and acted as markers for years 7 and 8. We also had a gurning competition for the boys and flexibility competition for the girls to give the run-ners a break between rounds, not to mention Mrs Linklaters terrible Jokes interlude. The Year 7 win-ners were Archie, Porter and Katsu and Year 8 winners were Tetu, Luke and Jack. Maths week competition winners How long was the piece of string winner Mr Sam Nelson How many Jet Planes winner Ciaran Guiney Number of Milk bottles in the bottle winner Luke O’Conner In the House quiz this year, Macaulay and Tasman shared first place. That’s all for now from the department where everyone counts and Maths is Fun. Maths Department
