Caring - Sharing - Learning Together 3rd May 2018 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE: IN THE SPOTLIGHT ANZAC DAY Educaon in the News: Recently, there has been increased speculaon about educaonal pracce with the release of the Through Growth to Achievement Reportby the Federal government. This media intensity will grow as the Fed- eral government consults with State Educaon Ministers later in the year. My professional learning over many years highlights the importance of new ideas. However, we must equally acknowledge proven pracce and value local priories. Over the past years, Mountain Creek has produced posive trends in Naonal assessments. More importantly, there is a strong alignment between the com- munitys expectaons and curriculum programs within the school. These pro- grams cater for academic excellence, physical prowess, cultural and arsc pathways and supporng emoonal needs. I look forward reflecng on emerging research about our Naonal educaon system and links to the important work that teachers and parents do with chil- dren every day to support a broad range of learning outcomes. NAPLAN: As we move in the month of May, NAPLAN processes begin for stu- dents in Year 3 and Year 5. Families are reminded that NAPLAN will occur dur- ing Week 5 of Term 2. Our students will complete the Naonal Assessment Pro- gram for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) from Tuesday, 15 May 2018 to Thursday, 17 May 2018. The Friday will be used for catch up tests in cases of absence. As can be inferred in my previous arcle, every week at Mountain Creek State School is about enjoying learning. This includes the NAPLAN week, so please ensure your children view it as a regular school roune to enjoy. If you have any quesons or concerns, you can read the NAPLAN informaon for parents. Mothers Day Stall: Please remember our wonderful P and C Associaon will be running a MothersDay stall during Week 4. Funds raised will be banked to support air-condioning plans. We will be starng the stall off on Wednesday 9, May 2018 for the special Preppies over in the Prep area from 8am. Everyone is welcome to come along Thursday, 10 May and Friday, 11 May 2018 from 8am outside the Tuckshop. Last week students and staff rep- resented the Mountain Creek State School at the ANZAC march and parade at Coon Tree. Our community demonstrated strong community spirit. Our school captains along with many other Mountain Creek stu- dents aended the march and wreath laying ceremony at the Coon Tree Memorial on Mon- day. Harry and Evie placed the wreath on behalf of Mountain Creek State School. ANZAC Day commemorates the anniversary of the ANZAC tradi- on when Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli.

ANZAC DAY THANK YOU: Last week over 120 students and staff represented the Mountain Creek State School at the ANZAC march and parade at Cotton Tree. Our community demonstrated strong community spirit. This spe-cial day helped us to serve our community and acknowledges the many fallen soldiers and support personnel who have made Australia a safe and successful nation. Rob Van den Heuvel Principal

NEW CURRICULUM HUB

After lots of planning and patience we now have a wonderful ‘Curriculum Hub’ in the Resource Centre. This area will be used as a meeting place for school leaders, teachers and school community members. Here staff members can col-laborate around curriculum activities and directions for the future. It is the first time that teachers at Mountain Creek School have had their own purpose built space for curriculum planning.

SCHOOL CROSSING REMINDER

The safety of students travelling to and from school is one of the most im-portant issues for school communities. Please remember to use our school crossings when crossing the road outside the front of the school and at the back of the school on Hermosa Street. Students are asked to Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be Respectful at school which also applies to road rules.

Sharon, Gerry and Bonnie are our three resident Crossing Supervisors who make it their job to get you across the road safely. Please greet them with a big smile and listen to their instructions before crossing. It is a very busy time at school pickup and drop off so parking in designated parking bays helps keep the drop off zones safe. We ask parents and carers NOT to double park in these areas and to only park in allocated car parking bays. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated to help keep the community safe.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY FRIDAY 18 MAY 2018 Now in its 19th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all primary school children will be encouraged to walk and com-mute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safe-ty, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. Our school will have 2 desig-nated meeting points with teachers supervising so we can all walk into school together as a big group. Parents and care givers are welcome to join with us. Once here, the tuck-shop is offering a healthy breakfast to finish the walk. Fur-ther details will be in the next issue of our Newsletter . Healthy breakfast men-us, available from Tuckshop ,will be distributed to students next week. We usually have a big turnout. So please join us in walking safely to school.

YEAR 6 TO 7 HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION

Our local state high schools run a variety of transition activities that give Year 6 students and their families opportunities to become familiar with their new school, processes and procedures, teaching and leadership staff and to meet future fellow students in the year prior to their commencement at high school. If you have not yet thought about your child’s enrolment into high school in 2019 I would suggest that you begin by visit-ing the High school web sites and checking their catchment maps to determine if your child is within their catch-ment. Below are website details, other important enrolment dates (where available).

This term, we are studying materials and their

properties. To gain a solid understanding of

what this means, 4T and 4W have been exper-

imenting with Ms T’s super special slime. We

got to twist it, bounce it, vibrate it, blow bub-

bles with it, turn it into a glove and generally

have a GREAT time. This unit has many oppor-

tunities for exciting, hands on learning and it

really is just about the BEST fun to be had.

YEAR 4 SCIENCE IS THE BEST SCIENCE!

PREP GET DIGITAL

I figured it out! Kind of... these are pictures of Prep B kids practising how to use our iPads to take photos so that they have evidence of their learning for their scrapbooks. Today in maths we were revising patterns. Well done to our mini digital learners

Recently, one of our parents, Mr Dominic VROLIJKS, was kind enough to donate a 3D printer to our school. We are currently looking at what innovative ways we can utilise this fabulous re-source into the curriculum and specific lessons. This fits in very nicely with the new Education Queensland initiatives around STEM delivery in the curriculum and the future job opportunities for our students in this rapidly growing industry. Check out the Sunshine Coast Maker Space with Dominic Vrolijks who is the founder of The Mak-er Space, https://www.scmakerspace.com.au, and has over 20 years trade experience and has been working in the R & D and product development space for the past 15 years. His passion for innovation, technology and his ability to turn a concept into a tangible item is evident in the range of products he has helped to manufacture. He has also worked in collaboration with the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and the USC Innovation Centre, as well as Sunshine Coast Council, local busi-nesses and entrepreneurs to open the Maker Space. The Sunshine Coast Maker Space allows locals to capitalize on physical opportunities in the digital economy.

ANZAC DAY ASSEMBLY

Last week we held our Anzac Day Ceremony to remem-ber the Australian and New Zealand troops who landed at Gallipoli. It was a beautiful ceremony which included the school choir singing the National Anthems and stu-dents from each class laying a wreath. Mrs Erikka Meades was our special guest representing the Returned and Service League of Australia—Kawana Sub Branch. Mrs Meades had a long and proud career serving our country and we were very honoured to welcome her to our school, on this special occasion. This year we’ve strengthened our ongoing connection with the Kawana Waters Sub Branch and become a part of the Kawana World War 1 link project. This project enables us to honour soldiers from the Landsborough Shire Roll of Honour because during world war 1 our ar-ea was part of the Landsborough Shire. This year elect-ed student leaders laid a sprig of rosemary as a symbol of remembrance and to represent the soldiers from the Shire Roll of Honour.
